In cases where the character needs to take a physical action, yes. In cases like this, where what's called for is largely happening in the character's head, the result is apt to be ambiguous. If we are too picky about naming approaches, we risk the, "Well, *how* do you search the room? What *exactly* do you look at?" that was a hallmark of previous editions, and more recently replaced with...

We've got lots of awesome stuff for mutants in Cursed Earth, upcoming! The psyker would take the Mutant race with the psionic mutation. This is a cool origin, though! It's very focused just around getting extra (or saving) PP though.

It isn't like this is a modern forensics game, where the PC can choose to take pictures of image processing, or take samples to the lab for analysis for approaches. Nor are players likely to be forensic scientists, or even people who actually have the skills in question, that would be able to name approaches would actually be fruitful. This is, honestly, a major problem with the "goal and...

Here's some of my ideas. Taking the three key actions that I mentioned earlier: parkouring up a wall in a narrow alley, wall running, and running up a wall to catch a ledge. The core idea is that, like jumping, parkouring is keyed to 10+dexterity or acrobatics bonus. Parkouring up a wall in an alley or narrow corridor: Alley must be narrow enough to allow this: 5 feet max width (could be...

That pretty much my plan. I also agree with this - it solved a lot of my players problems when I realized climbing mostly didn't require rolls unless its particularly dangerous. This is true, but thieves need to be able to climb walls!

There's this large swath of territory between, "this has no impact" and "the game depends on". Maybe we can consider what happens in that in-between, rather than driving to extreme strawmen used to assign "failure" to a GM, hey what?

Moral superiority of the adventurers, sure. It is only "colonial" if said adventurers move in and take over the place. Settling down is not in the Murder Hobo Manifesto - they are typically raiders, rather than colonizers.

The urban element is a major trope of the genre from its roots in fiction. Saying "urban is merely a setting" is like saying for Space Opera "laser/blaster guns are merely another weapon". Yes, you can play a Space Opera game without laser guns blasting away, but they are so common in the fiction as to be ubiquitous, and it is probably fair to build you game with the assumption that such things...

I think shifting initiative to Int is a good way to reduce the dex super stat and make int more well rounded. Initiative is always good. The cha = inspiration is solid. Gives player some control over when they get advantage benefits. Wisdom because of perception is already pretty good, I see it as a dump stat less than the other two.

You spend a long post complaining about how WoD is fixed in one particular version of the supernatural, and then when someone points out that one corner of it isn't like that... that it can manage many different kinds of supernatural, you say it doesn't fit your fairly narrow image of what these supernatural people should be! You may want to telegraph offensive capabilities that are beyond level appropriate - save-or-die, or "this is a huge ancient dragon, not some punk hatchling". But I don't think you need to telegraph that an enemy has a well-considered escape plan, which doesn't harm the PCs. An escaped villain is one...

Yup, some of them run quite hot. Purposely and some not so. So the heat can be used as a weapon or defensive measure. Some have heavy bone plating. Some can generate 'armour' or harden their skin in select areas, to either protect the nap or other areas, or to add bonus damage to melee strikes. A few other uses as well.

That is by far the biggest factor I'm sure. I would also assume that he saves his second wind until much later to milk this advantage. 5) One more action surge.

That way you always take some pain. 2) a person who falls unconscious always loses their next turn, no matter when healed. This means initiative is less relevant. Right now if I drop and the healer goes before my next turn, I’m barely inconvenienced. But if I lose my turn regardless of when I’m healed, it’s a...

They do that for two reasons: 1) it’s more visible on the store shelf 2) you can put your own stuff in it too

Boogeyman: "If I have the mechanics, I don't actually role play - I just use mechanics." FATE, as an example, puts social interaction on the same mechanical footing as physical interaction. In FATE-based games, if you say, "I attack" in physical combat, all you get is a very basic roll of your skill, which in general isn't so high as you'll be able to down anything other than a mook. ...

I am suggesting, as someone said upthread, that the GM has several functions, only one of which is adjudicating. When the GM is just deciding a result, for their own reasons unrelated to the rules of the game - that's not adjudicating. That moment when the GM is *authoring* a result, whatever their inspiration for that - that's not the moment they are adjudicating. I don't buy it. I...

I think this would be a fun little experiment series. 5e's bounded accuracy has made it where high level characters, while strong, are supposed to be toppled by the mob. Numbers mean more than level in 5e. So lets see how well that plays out in practice. In this series, we will take a pretty high level character (11th), and see how well they do against a mob of their lesser (1st level )...

  • 05:17 AM - Connorsrpg mentioned Morrus in post Starting Adventures
Hey Morrus, I am interested in submitting some short introductory and low level adventures to En5ider, but I have 1 question for you and the community: Do I need to provide the starting settlement? As in, I wish to submit some adventures that can be 'tacked on' to a settlement of choice by the DM, such as the ones already detailed on EN5ider. Would DMs be happy with this? Would I refer to people in their role, or still give them names etc? Eg: the watch captian vs Thorved the watch captain.

Another comment on shields, realism and gaming: using 2 shields as a fighting style seems just plain wrong to me. (This was mentioned in an earlier post by Paizo). If I was GMing the game (probably won't ever happen) I wouldn't allow it, and I certainly won't use it as a player. Edit: source: http://knowdirectionpodcast.com/2018/03/pathfinder-2nd-edition-playtest-special/ said by Mona (from the compilation thread done by Morrus )

Morrus, I see that terms like "virtue signalling" (a new one to me) and SJW are not allowed on this forum, but is the same true of terms like "white privilege" and similar?

"Two things I can't stand are racism and the Dutch!" - Michael Caine's character in one of those Austin Powers movies. When you quote a movie, quote it correctly! So that everyone can bake in it's glorious contrariety... ;-) Morrus: The article isn't discussing ANY particular culture, that would be great content! But your doing now what we all don't like saying that Africa or the Orient is a culture, it isn't. It's a collection of cultures. Instead of authors raving against things that are wrong with RPG products, why not show them how it's done?

  • 01:47 AM - thorgrit mentioned Morrus in post Paizo Announces Pathfinder 2nd Edition!
I'm interested, but cautiously optimistic. For my own purposes, I looked forward to Starfinder but it turned out to be too complicated for me to figure out character creation just reading the book. I remember when they came out with Unchained, and I was wondering if they'd use that to springboard off a new revised PF.5 or something, bundling the idea of traits and backgrounds and things all in together on a new core rulebook. Can do nothing but wait and see. I'm super pessimistic about any conversion guidelines that promise more than "just remake characters from the ground up" and "you can use old published adventures but ignore all the stats and use the new stats instead". Morrus: the link "Paizo has just announced" at the beginning appears to only point to the Paizo blog root, which I'm assuming will change over time. http://paizo.com/community/blog/v5748dyo5lkl9?First-Look-at-the-Pathfinder-Playtest is the link to the specific announcement post.

  • 04:30 PM - DMMike mentioned Morrus in post Make Up a Goblin Fact
Shouldn't this be a Wiki post? Would make it a whole lot easier to read previous facts. And number them. Like it says in the title. Making a table of random goblin traits to roll on so they're not all generic cannon fodder. Why should they be generic? Now dwarfs, they're all the same if you ask me. 63 (assuming the last numbered ones, though incorrect, actually deserved to be numbered): If you hit a goblin on the head hard enough, and roll a 1, it sinks into the ground and sprouts up from the ground at full hit points, just two feet away. Edit: Ah, Threaded Mode. Nice touch, Morrus. Any chance we could get some Word Wrap in there, and a resizable window?

  • 12:26 AM - Eltab mentioned Morrus in post 5e EPIC MONSTER UPDATES
Is there a post number limit? @Morrus can answer this definitively, if anybody can (and hopefully I just drew his attention to your question). I don't block anybody - no idea if anybody else blocks me - and the post count is 1019 at this time (51 pages as I have the format settings). I don't see any problems here yet. HOWEVER, I've seen other threads break down if they have many large posts in them. Some of the CharOp threads found out the hard way that there IS a "max post length" limit; this may eventually come back to bite your first page. I've only perused the thread here and there, but this sounds like awesome work. For a homebrew project, I'm going to have to compare your version of the Out of the Abyss demon lords to the "by-the-book" published versions. My BBEG is an FR-specific demon lord, and I want the fight against him to feel like the PCs really have saved the world from a Great Evil.

  • 11:25 AM - CubicsRube mentioned Morrus in post Single mechanics from an RPG you love
Wow. Theres a lot of ideas i like on an individual scale, but if i ever made them into a single system it'd be a frakenstein! I love adv/disad in 5e. Its easily my favourite thing in 5e for the same reason as Morrus above outlined. I love bennies. It makes heroes seem truly heroic to me and it allows them to turn the tide of fate to their favour. Im currently digging fria ligans core mechanics of the myz rules. Essentially, roll a 6 and its a success. Roll more 6es and you can use them to buy effects. Simple and elegant. I adore shadow of the demon lords spell schools and modular classess. In fact next campaign i want to run is curse of strahd converted to that system. I also enjoy unknown armies 3e shock gauges and trauma rules. I think they are the most realistic and interesting trauma and insanity rules in an rpg period. Dungeon worlds fronts are great for behind the scene gming. Shadowruns magic as a skill system woth their risk/reward on castuming at high power levels is the most magicy feeling system i think ivve played in. I'm sure theres more, but thats what i can remember at the moment!

I like how this guy in the link below (I feel like he’s familiar... like he’s up to something these days... something big) has ported skill challenges into 5e. I’ve already incorporated a few of my own design into our current campaign and they’ve gone well. I like Morrus’s suggestion not to announce “now it's time for a skill challenge!” to the players. Seems pretty obvious, but pretty sure I did just that... so could have gone even better! Lol https://m.youtube.com/watch?v=GvOeqDpkBm8

  • 03:53 PM - Ryujin quoted Morrus in post Broadcast TV- Renewals, Cancellations
I’m struggling with all the Arrowverse superhero shows right now. Flash has lost its sense of fun, Arrow is boring, Legends is just slapstick. Supergirl is currently the best of them. The crossover shows, in an attempt to force viewers to watch the shows that they weren't currently also watching, had the affect on me of making me drop the lot. Unfortunately it seems that amazon has dropped "The Tick", which I was enjoying.
  • 03:42 PM - damned quoted Morrus in post Fantasy Grounds Usage Stats Through Q1 2019: D&D Up, Pathfinder Down
The Amazon sales rankings suggest otherwise. Or they suggest what these stats also suggest and that is the market is growing. 5E is without any doubt the best selling D&D variant and D&D has almost always been the best selling RPG (bar that period during 4E that we dont talk about in polite company). I have shelves and shelves of dead tree RPG books. But I have even more digital RPG content. And I buy digital RPG content at more than 10:1 ratio to physical books these days. I havent stopped buying physical RPG books but Im far more selective about the physical ones that I do buy.

OK. https://i.imgur.com/IRIIU87.jpg "Some updates and tweaks" to the system doesn't sound like a simple reprint incorporating the errata to me but, as you so eloquently put it, OK. EDIT: omgosh that's huge, is there a way to shrink it to a normal human level?
  • 06:16 PM - J. H. Frank quoted Morrus in post Warhammer 40K Wrath & Glory Now To Be Produced By... Cubicle 7!
Yeah, but “reprint” can’t. GW just released a new Chaos codex that is an exact copy of the first one, just with an extra signature of pages worked in holding entirely new pages stolen from a different, newer supplement. It was absolutely a “revised reprint” or “expanded reprint” or even just a “reprint.” This prescriptivist thing where people are acting like they can divine the exact plan from two words with variable meanings is remarkable. My only position is that I am assuming the worst because that is what I expect from Wrath & Glory now.
  • 05:58 PM - Tony Vargas quoted Morrus in post The Most Popular D&D Character Name Is "Bob"
What's the name of your D&D character? The folks at D&D Beyond have released some more stats, and this time they're sharing the top 15 D&D player character names. What these stats appear to tell us is that many people call their character "Bob", Wellp, I guess that finally puts all those D&D Beyond stats into perspective.
  • 05:41 PM - GreyLord quoted Morrus in post Meet Us At UK Games Expo!
EN Publishing will be at UK Games Expo this year (March 31st-June 2nd) on Stand 2-T1. We will have all our Judge Dredd & The Worlds of 2000 AD products available to buy, we’re running 1-hour demos, and we also we’ll have an exclusive small print run of the next book, LUNA-1! We literally only have 30 of these printed for the expo (there will be many more printed later, don’t worry!) so it’s strictly first come first served. Please do stop by and say hello Heads up...I believe that is May 31st-June 2nd that you will be there. Good Luck and hope many stop by to see you!
  • 05:22 PM - Joshua Randall quoted Morrus in post Why Did Paizo Never Make A Pathfinder/Starfinder Magazine?
This was the massively fortuitous advantage they had — the whole subscription base of Dragon and Dungeon magazineYes. Getting the client list is hugely valuable, and it's pretty shocking Wizards was willing to give that up. Somebody negotiated a very good deal for Paizo, either in the original negotiations when they started publishing Dragon / Dungeon magazines, or in the negotiations when they stopped publishing those.
  • 05:10 PM - MechaPilot quoted Morrus in post The Most Popular D&D Character Name Is "Bob"
What's the name of your D&D character? As I suspect is true for most players, I have a few characters in different games at the moment: Drea (a darve, i.e. alternate version of drow, assassin played in a modern game that mixes d20 modern and 5e). Velishra (a tiefling wizard who ascended to actual demonhood) Evedra (a human utility wizard who's mute because her tongue was cut out). Mallucia (an asimaar light cleric who gets her powers from her belief in herself as a nacent hellgoddess) What these stats appear to tell us is that nearly 10% of people call their character "Bob", and about 12% seems to just use their class name, such as "Cleric" or "Bard". Lots of people seems to name their characters after Game of Thrones' Varys, but spell it differently, and lots like "dark" names like Ash, Raven, Ember, and Shadow. Lilith is also a dark name. IIRC, it means night in Hebrew. The name is also probably related to Lilitu, the Sumerian goddess of night. And, it has a place in th...
  • 04:31 PM - LordEntrails quoted Morrus in post The Most Popular D&D Character Name Is "Bob"
What these stats appear to tell us is that nearly 10% of people call their character "Bob", Uh really? I mean that would indicate that their are only something like 12,810 characters built on DDB. Is that in agreement with data on things like feats etc? 12k seems exceptionally low given all the talk of how big/used/important DDB is.

  • 10:33 PM - Saelorn quoted Morrus in post Thinking about an advancement system
One can reasonably assume that XP is only gained during the course of an adventure. Otherwise it’s not really a game.So the adventure "starts", and then everyone spends a month in their basement to max out all of their skills. This sort of system has been done many times in the past, and this is always a sticking point. The optimal path of advancement is to avoid adventure as much as possible. You would need some sort of caveat in order to keep everyone moving forward, instead of just grinding, and that's not an easy passage to phrase. If the rules are clear and precise, then they can be gamed. If the rules are too vague, then they can be misinterpreted.
  • 09:26 PM - Elfcrusher quoted Morrus in post Ghosts of Saltmarsh: A Review
If it's the same as the original, the PCs think the Lizardfolk are the bad guys. It's only after they start to raid their lair they (might) realise they're the good guys, and they're refugees from a Sahuagin attack. They're trying to build an alliance with Locathah and Merfolk to fight back, and humans aren't even on their radar. If the PCs have killed too many of them before figuring this out, the original adventure has the Chieftain charge them 10gp per body as compensation. Always seemed a bit harsh to me. In The Final Enemy, the battle at the end happens offscreen in the original. Sounds like that's the major change (one for the better -- that was always anticlimactic). I figured the plot would be the same. I was wondering more how the text expects the DM to resolve the challenges, vis-a-vis the debate(s) we've been having about how tasks are handled in 5e.
  • 08:44 PM - Satyrn quoted Morrus in post Thinking about an advancement system
Inspired by CoC and similar systems. I haven’t thought it all the way through yet. It’s very similar to the way CoC does it. Percentile system. Everything is a skill. You improve with failure. Every time you fail a skill check, the skill improves by 1%. Technically they can go over 100% (modifiers might bring it down). Hmmm. Definitely easy to abuse though. Find lots of easy tasks and repeat. Though I guess you’d stop failing them, so your score would remain static. So you'd find lots of hard tasks, instead. (And that's what they'd have been doing from the start, since they were trying to fail). But then, this creates a story where the character is constantly trying to test his limit, which could work out well.
  • 05:31 PM - amethal quoted Morrus in post Why Did Paizo Never Make A Pathfinder/Starfinder Magazine?
Well, they do adventure path subscriptions, which is essentially their replacement for Dungeon. IIRC it was originally even the same subscriber list which got transferred over automatically. As I recall, they had subscribers but no magazine, so they pretty much had to transfer the subscribers over, or at least give the option to them (I have an idea they may have offered refunds as well - I'm not sure because I had cancelled my subscription by that point, because distribution issues meant my FLGS got theirs weeks before I did, and sometimes mine never arrived at all). Some of the things Lisa Stevens wrote about the print magazine business, in the USA at least, made me wonder why anybody ever went into it. (It might have been in one or more of the Paizo "year in review" articles on their website.) They found it hard enough with a well established brand like Dragon; they clearly had zero appetite for trying it with a new publication.
  • 03:13 PM - jasper quoted Morrus in post YouGov D&D Alignment Survey - how many Britons identify as Chaotic Evil?
He is American. That aside, he’s masking a naughty word. It’s not “chutes”, it’s something similar-sounding. jasper thinks . jasper thunks on it. And finally jasper finally gets its. Jasper is slow.

Sure. Provide a detailed economical analysis then. We’ll wait. :) I fell asleep while typing up the snooze fest! Hopefully everything will blow over and my fav games stay around the same price. If not, then I might be buying a few less until wages raise to counter for inflation.. stopping cause it’s just too boring to go on about!

Yes. I said exactly that. :) What, do you expect us to read before going half-cocked??? That would go against all of our cherished Interwebz traditions.
