I can understand why you feel differently. However, I think you might be allowing "realism" to override several points (most already made, but I'll reiterate): For one thing - this orc is on guard. It isn't that he's actually helpless - tied up or unconscious. He is bored, but not insensate. He can still hear the twang of the bow in the distance, is still able to move, roll with the impact...

Our group described Mage: The Ascension as the best game when in the right hands, and the absolute worst game when in the wrong hands. Given that FATE has The Dresden Files right there for you to manipulate to your whims, yeah, that'd be a good alternative.

The capacity for hatred is aleph-null. The capacity for gnomes to make your hatred look pompous is at least aleph-one. The capacity for paladins to look down their noses at your self-centered antipathies is somewhere around aleph-fifteen. I'd argue that the arc of history bends toward apathy, but I don't care enough to bother.

It is an attack. The attacker is unseen by the target, so the attack is rolled with advantage. The PC is attacking with surprise. The character gets to apply whatever benefits are within their power (like, Sneak Attack, if they have that ability). But there's no "perfect shot - instant kill". If you can't pull together enough hit points of damage... well, that shot wasn't as perfect as you...

My group uses a similar biweekly format (twice a month). My first campaign with them was Deadlands, and ran... 5 years and one month. We took a bit of a palate cleanser with (what for us is) a short arc that lasted 6 months with Atomic Robo. The following campaign has been Ashen Stars, and has been running for... just about 3.5 years now? It is heading into some plotlines that the group...

Um, no. I was responding directly to what DM Mike said. In the first bit we are agreeing (and I am merely elucidating with an example). In the second, I am directly responding to how he says he plays. So, really, you are 100% dead wrong - I am having a discussion with someone that seems to me 100% grounded in our play experiences. Please don't come to me 100% dead wrong, proclaiming...

None tried it - we took it that this was a religious stricture, and doing so was roughly equivalent to a Paladin violating their alignment/code restrictions - they'd lose their powers, and have to find a way to atone. I think we assumed that clerics and druids who fell became fighters with d8s for hit points, which kinda sucked, so nobody risked it. One exception was made: Old-style bards,...

Yah. If a 15 year old city kid decides to play a ranger, you shouldn't expect the *player* to know proper approaches to how to acquire food or shelter, or follow tracks. The game very explicitly works to help you play characters who know and do things you, the player, cannot. Expecting player understanding of the character's domains of knowledge is not fair. People are so......

In cases where the character needs to take a physical action, yes. In cases like this, where what's called for is largely happening in the character's head, the result is apt to be ambiguous. If we are too picky about naming approaches, we risk the, "Well, *how* do you search the room? What *exactly* do you look at?" that was a hallmark of previous editions, and more recently replaced with...

It isn't like this is a modern forensics game, where the PC can choose to take pictures of image processing, or take samples to the lab for analysis for approaches. Nor are players likely to be forensic scientists, or even people who actually have the skills in question, that would be able to name approaches would actually be fruitful. Here's some of my ideas. Taking the three key actions that I mentioned earlier: parkouring up a wall in a narrow alley, wall running, and running up a wall to catch a ledge. The core idea is that, like jumping, parkouring is keyed to 10+dexterity or acrobatics bonus. Parkouring up a wall in an alley or narrow corridor: Alley must be narrow enough to allow this: 5 feet max width (could be...

There's this large swath of territory between, "this has no impact" and "the game depends on". Maybe we can consider what happens in that in-between, rather than driving to extreme strawmen used to assign "failure" to a GM, hey what?

The urban element is a major trope of the genre from its roots in fiction. Saying "urban is merely a setting" is like saying for Space Opera "laser/blaster guns are merely another weapon". Yes, you can play a Space Opera game without laser guns blasting away, but they are so common in the fiction as to be ubiquitous, and it is probably fair to build you game with the assumption that such things...

I think shifting initiative to Int is a good way to reduce the dex super stat and make int more well rounded. Initiative is always good. The cha = inspiration is solid. Gives player some control over when they get advantage benefits. Wisdom because of perception is already pretty good, I see it as a dump stat less than the other two.

Yup, some of them run quite hot. Purposely and some not so. So the heat can be used as a weapon or defensive measure. Some have heavy bone plating. Some can generate 'armour' or harden their skin in select areas, to either protect the nap or other areas, or to add bonus damage to melee strikes. A few other uses as well.

FrogReaver, let us be clear: EN World does not have a strong concept of thread ownership. It isn't really *your* thread. You don't get editorial power. You don't get to say who posts in it, or what they say. Mistwell, that said, you could do to learn to limit how much you lay a wet blanket on other people's ideas. You made a suggestion for a change in direction. That suggestion was...

I think part of the broad brush with which early D&D is painted is due to historical distance, but also because Gygax and other TSR authors (such as the infamous Roger Moore “Tucker’s Kobolds” story) talked about these early tendencies and how they were prevalent, and how we shouldn’t do them; therefore, just like a historian who reads partial historical records and draws conclusions without...

I figured someone would piggy back off the work and take it to the next level...kudos! My guess is I underestimated the second wind power for the 1st level fighters, so more of them died than should have.

A "study your enemy" kind of maneuver. Choose one enemy. Gain +1 to attack and damage against this opponent for every round you have been in combat with him, but no higher than your int modifier. The bonus last for 1 minute.

TBBT is a sitcom. Sitcoms are generally the same, just the characters change. There have been sitcoms featuring wartime medics, upper class toffs, pretty people in New York, and everything in between. The characters are always the butt of the joke. This time it was scientists. The fact that geeks finding scientists in the same mainstream sitcoms as everybody else gets them upset kinda...

When writing ZEITGEIST: The Gears of Revolution, there are many urban adventures, but the 'gating' was more information based. You didn't know you had a reason to go certain places until you accomplished preliminary investigations. You can look up and see the spooky mountain in the middle of the city from the get-go, but you don't know what you need to do up there until you follow a few leads...

  • 07:31 AM - Challenger RPG mentioned Morrus in post Article: 8 Ways to Run a Game Online
@TerraDave : This is a fine place to post any comments, in my opinion. I agree with you on all points. I like Tabletop Forge combined with Google Hangouts for the closes to 'real life' experience I know of. @Hussar : You're probably much more accomplished in this field than I am. I'm technologically deficient, but all my experience in online gaming is presented in the article including all the systems I've been able to figure out or game with other people. I've checked out Roll20 which looks pretty awesome, and I'm vaguely familiar with OpenRPG but found them not as user friendly. I'm sad to say I don't actually have much experience with VTT and if anyone has more info on it, I don't mind them sharing it here. @Morrus : No kidding? Wow, good to know that! :D I've always liked DND online games. Used to have a great pbp community there and ran a cool game for a year or two there. @Scrivener of Doom : Sorry to disappoint. I actually have next to no experience with classic VTT programs. They were always too unwieldy for me and I mostly game with people face to face. Sadly, I'm techno deficient and writing on an apparently very high tech topic. I didn't realize there was so much out there. @Rabbitbait : thanks for the info! I've checked out Roll20 but haven't played a game using it (I just watched the tutorial and made an account). Also, I think Robin D. Laws was using Tabletop Forge with Google Hangouts when we did a playtest and that was pretty awesome. I have no direct personal experience with Tabletop Forge but it appears to be pretty awesome. Thanks for sharing! *** Unfortunately, I've been writing my articles well past 11 PM as work is so crazy right now with working overtime and all. It's ...

  • 10:22 AM - MerricB mentioned Morrus in post Recent board games and what I thought [add your own capsule reviews]
...Magic Realm, the latter because it gives you a very large selection of possible routes to victory. You can explore dungeons, kill monsters, find treasures, loot monasteries, recruit allies, and besiege cities in this game, and it's one I adore, though I don't think it's for the casual gamer. The Lost Legion adds a bunch more variety in terms of skills and spells to learn and monsters to fight, as well as adding a big co-operative scenario against the Lost Legion itself. The expansion pieces aren't quite compatible with my first edition MK set, but they're close enough to work. I also got in six games of Netrunner. I love the game - of all the CCG-type games out there, it requires the most thinking while playing the game (rather than just having a good deck). The Fantasy Flight version is far superior to the original, and is very playable with just one or two core sets. Apart from that, I've played lots of games of the LOTR card game, and few games of Brass and Village this week. Morrus, have you tried the Doctor Who Card Game yet? It's a lighter design from Martin Wallace, one of my three favourite boardgame designers (The other two are Stefan Feld and Vlaada Chvatil). Cheers!

  • 03:03 AM - Siberys mentioned Morrus in post Zeitgeist Portrait Pack, Meanwhile in the News
Morrus RangerWickett (I didn't know which of you this would most concern, so I figured I'd tag you both.) 1) The Portrait Pack on DTRPG has a mistake in it - it's only got WotBS art! Now, I'd already gotten the Zeitgeist art and was redownloading to see if the portraits from Cauldron-Born were added. I've since found the portraits I was looking for here on the forums, and I'm happy to get what is functionally a bunch of free art, but I'm sure that's not ideal for you, so heads up. 2) Are there going to be any more "Meanwhile in the News" stories? I like 'em a lot.

@Morrus should answer for sure. I imagine there wouldn't be a problem using images and excerpts of text, as long as you're not reproducing full encounters. As for what address to link to, I'm not sure if it will change since we've had a site reboot after December's hack attack, but I believe right now the go-to page is www.enworld.org/ap Thanks much. 1. No intent to reproduce or disseminate content that isn't part of a free download. I may want to reproduce parts of the players guide for ease of function; but the group is private. 2. Every page with content will contain a link back to ENPublishing as appropriate. Will wait on Morrus

Should there be a drop-down box? I'm a bit confused by the whole process. Or do I have to create a book page first and associate that with the group?

  • 03:23 PM - Maxperson quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
If that were true there would be plenty more intelligent species on Earth. The truth is, intelligence is definitely not needed for survival. There are species on this planet which predate us and will likely outlast us. When it comes to evolutionary survivability, we are not the top of the pyramid. If it wasn't true, we wouldn't have intelligence. Traits are selected for survival and intelligence aids in that. It also doesn't have to be the absolute best survival trait in order to be a survival trait. Intelligence also doesn't have to work in order to be a superior trait. Underdogs win all the time. The species you suggest will survive us do not have a chance at diverting an asteroid that will destroy them, or even detecting it in the first place. We do, because intelligence. We may not succeed, but we have that chance to survive because of our brains. Intelligence being a survival trait is all over the place. https://www.psychologytoday.com/us/blog/the-scientific-fundament...
  • 02:38 PM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Rate the Star Wars Movies
Seems a lot of people agree that Attack of the Clones is the worst. So much so that they keep calling it The Clone Wars instead! Derp to many clones. We have Attack of the clones, The Clone Wars, Clone Wars, and The Clone Wars (animated). Apparently the big problem with The Last Jedi was there was no overall plan for episodes VII-IX so the director was allowed to more or less do whatever he wanted and IMHO did a poor job on following up on some of the plot hooks of the TFA. There was a lot of speculation about Snoke for example, but nope they Boba Fett'ed him. TFA was really good, not exactly original though. And they killed off Luke to early (should have been episode IX if at all), and now with Carrie's death all of the OT main characters/actors are dead. And theres still some lingering bad will online over burning the old legends stuff and then reintroducing it but worse (Thrawn for example). I got a buzz at the theatre from Rogue One/TFA and after TLJ it kinda felt like 1999 again w...
  • 02:29 PM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post Do you believe we are alone in the universe?
I'm not thinking dogs and monkeys, though - I'm thinking cockroaches and jellyfish. Crocodiles, although they have changed, have been around for about 85M years. Lice, some crabs, and a ton of sea-creatures. Heck, there's a reasonable possibility is that it's our intelligence which will wipe us out, and leave us with a pretty short footprint compared to many unintelligent species, making intelligence a misstep in the evolutionary chain, not the apex of it. This. We can adapt to the environment though so short of poisoning the atmosphere or the ocean we on't wipe ourselves out even if global warming go up by 2 or 3 degrees. I'm not sure we even have enough nukes to cause an extinction level event. That being said if we have 10 billion+ people and the resources to support 2 billion its fairly obvious what will happen. We won't sent colonists to Mars, bullets are much cheaper. Also gonna suck for anyone who is in semi tropical or warmer areas of the Earth.

There are species on this planet which predate us and will likely outlast us. When it comes to evolutionary survivability, we are not the top of the pyramid. Maxperson might be considering intelligence to start at a level much less than what humans possess. From the standpoint of tool using intelligence, evolution may ultimately decide it was a bad idea and we'll be gone. When you get to a tool using level that allows you to screw with the environment that keeps you alive you either get smarter, in a different sense, or go extinct. I've read some compelling theories that postulate the rise of multiple sentient species is suppressed by the competition between them. That, ultimately, one wins out and the other(s) disappear. If there isn't significant geological isolation, you can't really have more than one (in theory).

  • 11:53 PM - TrippyHippy quoted Morrus in post Today's The Last Day Of Voting For The Most Anticipated Tabletop RPGs Of 2019!
Sorry, I can’t add things to the list. They need to have been nominated in the previous stage. Besides, voting ends in a couple of days. I think the issue with Cyberpunk was that it was nominated as Cyberpunk 2077, but was removed on the grounds that there was little evidence of any actual development. However, as pointed out in the link above, there is apparently development of Cyberpunk: Red which is from the same company but is set at an earlier date in the setting.

Yeah. The issue is that maps take up a *lot* of space, and so they need to be really necessary to make the cut. I think that can be dealt with as a separate issue. One-page adventures is great. It's *also* nice to have lots of really good generic (but exciting) location maps. Taverns. Streets. Caves. Roads. Forrest clearings. All of 'em would work here.

  • 10:30 PM - 77IM quoted Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
I didn't mean to imply that you were. You asked: What would you want to see in such a thing? (Assuming such a thing is a thing you might want to see). Harper's style (notably his use of random tables to generate things quickly) has worked well for me in the past and I might want to see it in one-page adventures. I absolutely love the idea of one-page adventures and I think 5E is an excellent system for them. My dream is for there to be a "fourth core book" that is just full of 1-page and 2-page adventures. So you show up to run a game with zero prep, but you've got the PHB, MM, DMG, a stack of pregen characters and/or blank sheets, plus a the big book of mini-adventures. (I was hoping the Mini-Dungeon Tome would be this, but it doesn't quite work for me, for a number of reasons. I think the approach you're taking above is closer to what I am looking for.)
  • 06:41 PM - 77IM quoted Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
So I whipped this together super-quick just as a sort of concept piece. I think it can be improved. I took Paul Oklesh's adventure for EN5ider and tried to distill the most important parts of it down to one page. It's an 11-page adventure, so this is basically the very core of it. My layout skills are mediocre at best. 103390 Quick feedback: - The design/layout/formatting looks great! But it's kind of busy and hard to read. I think you should expect people to print out one-page adventures, so the bulk of the body text should be black-on-white, and not diagonal. - I like prose with scannable elements. The bold monster names (standard in 5e) are a great example. I like that you've made NPC names ALL CAPS, although it appears inconsistent, and I think there might be better treatments you could apply, like SMALL CAPS or underline or even bold italics color. - "Key Locations" and "Other Places" seem like odd categorizations to me. I'd probably have a box for "The Village of Lanidor" an...

What do you mean by different desktop displays? I think the "latest news" scroll on the right displays when I switch to desktop now, but it's not there when I go to a bookmarked page? But maybe that's only the case when I'm going to bookmarked Subscriptions page? EDIT: In any event, the page used to autosize to the posts themselves, but now I have to enlarge to exclude the "latest posts" etc.

  • 12:16 AM - Sadras quoted Morrus in post How would you design one page adventures?
What would you want to see in such a thing? 0. Adventure/Session Name 1. Setting the Scene - a brief description, key notes/NPCs 2. The Event - introduces the conflict/quest - could be a singular or combination of the pillars. 3. Interesting Features - terrain/weather conditions, monsters, DCs...etc 4. Small Map (only if necessary) 5. Conclusion Adventure Name: We're the Rats Setting the Scene [Name] Two-story tavern. Mid-late evening. Bitterly cold winter's day. Handful of warmly dressed patrons. Dim light. Roaring fire. Staple diet is ale, hot soup and bread. [Name] NPC and singular word descriptors. Innkeeper's dog. Social encounter which provides leads for characters' goals. Perhaps PCs notice girl. The Event A gust of wind bursts into the tavern, disturbing the common room as 3 shifty looking characters enter. The innkeeper's dog barks nervously at the strangers. When I was a kid, this sort of thing would totally be up my alley. I remember pouring over illustrations and photos of medieval weaponry, loving the Arms & Equipment guide and Shadowrun’s Street Samurai Catalog. Heck, as a 40-something, it still sounds pretty cool. This guide includes detailed illustrations of the weapons, armor, clothing, and other equipment that fighters use, and offers the tools young, aspiring adventurers need for learning how to build their own characters, including sample profiles, a flowchart to help decide what type of warrior to be, and brainstorming challenges to start thinking like an adventurer whether on your own or in the midst of an exciting quest with friends and fellow players.

The replication is what makes it spread like a virus, making the coverage get exponentially faster. Like that doubling the grains of rice on a chessboard thing — but even more so, because each makes a few dozen copies rather than just one. Oh, I understand that. However, if you're a race that is that advanced, aging if it was ever a problem to begin with, has probably been conquered. If imperfect replication is going to be an issue, slow it down a bit. Time is on your side. :)
