    The big stuff: 1) 20 con, so more hp, on top of more hp! 2) Slightly higher crit modifier 3) +2 more attack, and one extra attack every round. 4) The big one....heals 10 damage every round once at half. That is by far the biggest factor I'm sure. I would also assume that he saves his second wind until much later to milk this advantage. 5) One more action surge.

    It means a lot of rerolls and shifting all of the players and monsters, either on cards or in your head. Way more complicated every round as opposed to just "hey your down, remember you lose your next turn no matter what".

    To me the two simplest rules to fix this: 1) a penalty when falling unconscious. That way you always take some pain. 2) a person who falls unconscious always loses their next turn, no matter when healed. This means initiative is less relevant.     If the weapon is powerful enough.. vaporizing the head and neck would kill the Titan.     No, thatís the opposite of what I just said. :) It literally just does what it says in that paragraph ó to benefit from higher quality equipment, you need an appropriate skill. You canít benefit from an exceptional quality pistol without enough ranks in pistols. Same with armour.

    I just something similar. I didn't change the damage, but allowed the blade to gain any benefits of the blast. So invocations that give knockback for example, could be used. The invocation that adds your charisma mod would apply, etc.

    The thing about milestone leveling that breaks the association of levels to combat is that it gets applied when you reach the milestone, *however* you reach the milestone.     One option missed in the OP is "Ineffable: The exact nature of the gods is not known, or undetermined. Divine magic happens, but nobody has proof of why or how." This is how most of my games run - unless or until the actual nature of divine magic impact play (so, it becomes mechanically- or plot-relevant), then I don't bother to specify. This allows for more belief systems in the world.

    Erg. I haven't read the details of that for years. Hm. PbPs take forever usually. So I'd either just lay it out as a background thing, or make it ultra simplified. Morrus, I don't recall James's screen name to ping him, but maybe he could use this as a baseline for converting this scene in the 5e version, which should probably be more rules-lite. To take down Kell, the Flint Police will be going on numerous missions over the next few days. {Brief overview of their missions.} You're coordinating them, though, so together the team needs to accomplish the following five tasks. For any of these tasks, you can just make a skill check to represent general planning time, or we can roleplay a bit if you want to do something hands-on, or if you have a clever idea you want to pitch. You might call a favor in instead and have someone else make the check on your behalf. You can split the tasks up however you like, but it takes 4 hours for a PC to make each of these skill checks, so you probably want to divide them among the party. I contributed when ENWorld went completely down several years ago, and I guess I never set up my ongoing contribution at that point. So, Morrus, what do you prefer? Through EN5ider or Trailseeker Patreons? Or the "ENWorld" Patreon I see on the main page? Or is the "subscription" method in account settings still the most viable way to do it? What does everyone else do?

    The Guild is great for people doing book design as a hobby. But asking them to compete with people doing RPG book design as a living or as a business is problematic. The alternative to the DMsGuild isn't DriveThru or Kickstarter. It's people's fan blogs. It's Reddit. It's Pintrest. It's zero money. After all, 5e and the OGL was around for eighteen months before the Guild but very few people took the plunge to self publishing on DriveThru or Kickstarter. But isn't that the point? That the DMs Guild is meant to be a place for hobbyists to make a little bit of money for products they would have made anyway, but NOT a place for actual design businesses to peddle their wares? For actual for-profit design businesses they should be using things like the OGL, Kickstarter, and Patreon (like Morrus does) so that they have more control of how and what they produce for their business? Including things like branding, logos, original art, cartography, what percentage of the money they bring in and the like? I mean I can get that there's no real "intermediate" step between DMs Guild, and Kickstarter/OGL. A hobbyist gets the experience of trying publish using DMs Guild and tries to build a name for themselves... but the jump to then trying to run a Kickstarter in order to actually become a for-profit design house is a big one. There's no place in the middle where "the best of the best" can go to receive the same amount of viewership that DMs Guild grants them, while not needing as many up-front "fans" or name-recognition in order to successfully pull off an OGL/KS. So anything that keeps DMs Guild itself from becoming a more intermediate step for those writers is saddening and I can understand the frustration. But I don't think that's really what DMs Guild was ever meant to be ...

    The campaign guide for 5e War of the Burning Sky should be coming out within a week or two. It contains a warfare supplement that Morrus created for the 3.5 version. The encounters are set around specific tasks the PCs can complete that influence the battle as a whole such as taking a strategic point, assassinating a high-level enemy official, defending against an enemy surge, etc.

    Can someone tell me what all these acronyms stand for Truthfully, I only know some of them. WOIN stands for ďWhatís OLD is NEW,Ē which is a lovely pun used as the general name for the generic system that Morrus designed. OLD is the fantasy incarnation of WOIN, NEW is the sci-fi version, and NOW is the modern/contemporary equivalent. Despite OLD, NEW, and NOW being structured like acronyms, I donít think Iíve ever seen an official statement on what they stand for, and any guesses I might have would just be pure conjecture on my part.

Very much agreed! @Morrus. just a clarification, Warhammer Fantasy and Warhammer 40,000 are not the same brand. It might seem like splitting hairs, but it would be beneficial for newcomers to either IP to not become confused.

    Morrus: Legend of the Five Rings 5th Edition won't use the classical Roll and Keep dice (d10s) pool system of the previous four editions, but a modified Roll and Keep with proprietary, narrative dice (with 6 or 12 sides), similar - but not identical - to those introduced by Warhammer Fantasy Roleplay 3rd Edition and then employed in the various Star Wars RPGs by Fantasy Flight Games (and now in their Genesys "universal" system).

    I think he has a point in that they were early examples of the mainstreaming of geek culture. It grew from then, but that's when geek culture started to feel like it was mainstream. The effects, of course, knocked on over years. We don't use "nerds" anymore but it's pretty much the same.

Even that might breach DMís Guild terms relating to attribution of other DMís Guild sources. But the Elder Scrolls adventure at the very least has elements which are copied parts of the DDAL adventure, or clearly derived from the original, and the OGL wouldnít cover that even if the Elder Scrolls adventure contained a copy of the licence, with attribution, as the DDAL adventure isnít Open Game Content.

    It's interesting the order they've done the adventures -- the original Saltmarsh trilogy opens it, as expected, but Salvage Operation and Isle of the Abbey are inserted before The Final Enemy.     She's always come across like that to me. She does not like it when people disagree with her, and is very happy to coldly mete out extreme punishments and executions. That has been a change over time. Initially she was fairly kind, burning the witch only after she murdered her unborn child and turning Drago into a vegetable. Then she tried to avoid just killing the Masters as examples like her advisers suggested, even though they were behind the deaths of many of her people and more coming each day. Later she started punishing people who stood against her with more and more easy. This leap from punishing enemies into it's okay to murder 10,000 innocents in order to get what I want, is a rather large and sudden jump, though.

    Just take the core rulebook along and say thatís what youíre using. That is an option. However as Matrix says the APs are using stuff beyond the core rulebook. Well beyond it. It also begs the question whatís the point of playing in a system that doesnít grow. Pathfinder grew too fast in a glut of trying to release two products a month at least. 5e grows, but at a manageable pace. With the option for conversions if you want to try things not released yet.

Though with all of Pathfinder content in the Pfsrd, there were about 1500 feats if memory serves about 200 subclasses, 30 classes all available at playerís fingertips. I think in the end the designers become as paralysed by this as new players and DM do. It also become almost impossible to balance power when these things can be combined in so many things ways. I remember starting a new group Iíd collected and two experienced players trying to coach three new players through character gen. It was so time consuming - even with the 50 or so feats in the core books. The whole process took the entire five hour session.

The longer answer is that nobody is an island in a group game like this. Particularly if you are the DM, and you're playing with friends who buy stuff they like, it becomes increasingly difficult to say no to everything, to test everything and see how it works with everything else, to anticipate how things will be used, etc.. Bloat impacts most people, even if they don't buy the books with those books. It usually creates unpleasant peer pressure if you are not willing to look at new stuff - and if you are willing to look at new stuff, that is itself a burden on you. And then if you say no, that's an additional (often frequent) burden dealing with the friends who asked. There is also a culture surrounding a game, not the least of which is this very message board, and opting out of new stuff sometimes means opting out of that culture...

Americans in particular have the "king of the hill" mentality, as if the King Gorilla is the only successful gorilla. It is an incredibly myopic worldview. Not everyone has this view explicitly, but it is a subconscious influence that is particularly prevalent among Americans.

Or is SBLOCk some unusal special syntax only used by 1 % of vbulletin forums because vBulletin still hasn't standardized its tags? Don't we have a similar problem with quote tags? Or is it EN Worlds fault for not using standard tags?

    For creative works? Thatís a whole other debate! I'm not sure that's really the case, though. On one hand, yes - the writers are creating something. A vision of how the game should work. But Catalyst, the publisher, ultimately needs to sell product. If a shift to less crunch means more sales, that's what they'll do. Those who enjoy the current edition will continue to play what they own already. Just as happened with D&D/Pathfinder as it rolled from 3 -> 4 -> 5.
