Two rolls. One to determine where it lands, the other to attack all in the resultant burst.

No, that’s the opposite of what I just said. :) It literally just does what it says in that paragraph — to benefit from higher quality equipment, you need an appropriate skill. You can’t benefit from an exceptional quality pistol without enough ranks in pistols. Same with armour.

See Burst attacks on page 99. Area attacks use a single attack roll (in this case AGI (throwing) or similar) vs VITAL DEFENSE of all targets, and a single damage roll. Otherwise it is resolved just like any other attack roll.

The thing about milestone leveling that breaks the association of levels to combat is that it gets applied when you reach the milestone, *however* you reach the milestone. It doesn't have to be "you gain a level when you hit a milestone." It can be, "you gain some number of XP when you hit a milestone." And I think that fixes all the issues with milestone leveling you mention. People who...

I think you are missing the point a bit. Folks are asking whether "violent" is the "natural state" for humans. They then have to turn and look for what the "natural state" for humans actually is... and wind up reaching for straws, because they want to find the thing analogous to the feral cat, when no such thing exists. Basically, "natural" human behavior is everything we already see. ...

You aren't the only one in the thread that has tried to refer to something like the human "natural state". I was speaking to the entire concept with your post as merely a jumping off point, as it was the most recent to use the concept. No. Just as a wild cat is not "without cat influence". Wild is variously, "in a natural environment" or "undomesticated" - which I restated as 'without...

One option missed in the OP is "Ineffable: The exact nature of the gods is not known, or undetermined. Divine magic happens, but nobody has proof of why or how." This is how most of my games run - unless or until the actual nature of divine magic impact play (so, it becomes mechanically- or plot-relevant), then I don't bother to specify. This allows for more belief systems in the world.

The scientific community recognizes "good" and "evil" as human concepts, not natural states of the universe. The question of whether we are born good or evil makes little sense, when we *define* good and evil only after we are born! There's a problem with discussing our "default state". The game's rules are certainly largely about combat. The *could* have rules that were as rich for dealing with social/political action, or other activity, but they don't. If we hand players a hammer, we should expect them to treat problems like nails... There are games that do better. The CORTEX+ based Leverage game, for example, does include combat. There's "questionable choice" and "end up on the wrong side of the moral argument". Splitting the party to chase down goblins in the woods is a questionable choice, and when they did that, they handled the consequences. Becoming villains is what happens when you are on the wrong side of the moral argument. I think, on their first go ever at RPGs, having them hunted down and either executed...

There's a little-realized fact that there's no such thing as a no-holds-barred safe space. Safe spaces need boundaries, and the boundaries that are useful and safe for one group may not be for another.

Don't ask, "What would be a good metric?" Ask instead: "What matters to you about a game?" Not just as a thought exercise - Make an actual list of things that matter to you. We can try to separate what of those things are GM/group dependent, and what's rules-dependent, and what measures we could put that could be useful. Metrics should be chosen to answer specific questions.

It's not like a car. It's much more subjective and much more of an art. You can directly and objectively measure a car's horsepower or weight, but you can't do that with an RPG. I don't think anything can substitute for actually trying the thing. All the graphs in the world won't give you a sense of how you feel when you play the game.

I think you have a problem in that you are discussing what you see as a general issue, in a thread about an incident that does not support your points well at all. Find a documented incident where public shaming had a major impact on a GM, and it turns out the public was really wrong, and you might have something. But here, what you have are hypothetical, things you *fear* can happen, but for...

Another factor to consider is that reliability and consistency matter a lot to whichever side has the advantage. The underdog in a fight benefits from increased randomness, while the favored group benefits from a lack of surprises. In RPGs, the PCs are almost always the favored side. A disadvantage of a single large attack compared to two small attacks is that the single attacks are more likely...

Heists are always fun to play. Heck, ex-D&D designer Rodney Thompson built a whole game around them. Now, the San Jenaro Co-Op is bringing 25 heists in a hardcover book to Kickstarter! The book is system-neutral, and includes different genres -- sci-fi, fantasy, and so on. You get a detailed map, information on guards and traps, and so on. Here's the fluff text: "Heists are some of the...

The official Acquisitions Incorporated Dungeon Manual D&D book has snuck up on us, and is releasing in the next week or so. Artist Aviv Or has shown off some of the artwork she did for the book on Twitter. "I started with designing Positions - a character's role in the company on top of their standard D&D class - as iconic characters. Like the Cartographer, who's about discovering places...

  • 12:41 PM - Ghal Maraz mentioned Morrus in post Taking Nominees for Most Anticipated RPG of 2018
Morrus: Paladin: Warriors of Charlemagne, is not out yet, not even for the backers, as far as I can tell. Delta Green has the Handler's Guide out in PDF. City of Mist has the Starter Set out in both psysical and PDF form and the Core Rulebook out in PDF. Correct about World of Lazarus being a setting for Modern AGE. Sentinel Comics RPG has only the starter set out. The rulebook is due out in 2018. Don't know if it counts. Regarding the Flash Gordon RPG for Savage Worlds: it's not a fully-independent game, but it needs the Savage Worlds rules which aren't included in neither of the books, so it shouldn't count for the purpose of this poll (unless for some reason this rule doesn't apply to SW products... in fact, Savage Rifts made the top of the poll two years ago and it wasn't an independent ruleset too).

  • 12:47 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post Nathan Stewart Promises WotC will do something with new settings in 2018
And the whole point of going OGL was so that other companies could put out new campaign settings so that they didn't have to. Morrus even has a thread on the boards here that lists all the various campaign settings that have already been made for 5E. If you can't find something there you're looking for... then it's pretty much guaranteed that your desire and want is so narrow that WotC sure isn't going to scratch your itch, even if they *do* eventually produce a completely new setting at some point. That's just simply odds.

  • 06:28 PM - Matrix Sorcica mentioned Morrus in post Paizo New Roundup With Extra Ultimate Wilderness
They've all been like this. They are like press releases, but Fan made, and for fans of the system. It is news about what is available - not a review or critique. Sorta like cheer leading. I don't personally play Pathfinder, or own any Paizo products (not quite true I did buy a PDF of one of the bestiarys - I just can't help myself), but I find myself reading these news updates anyway. Ah, makes a lot more sense. So I was obviously too fast on the trigger. Thanks for clarifying. Morrus: see, not so hard.

  • 03:18 PM - lowkey13 mentioned Morrus in post What do you specifically want out of reviewers?
I think that Morrus in his last post listed some good reasons people read reviews. But as he alluded to in his comment regarding technical devices, people also read reviews differently depending on the type of thing being reviewed as well as the source of the review. For example, I enjoy reading literary and film criticism (reviews) in some sources even of books or movies I will never watch, because those can be an art form in and of themselves. I read it not for the interest in the subject, necessarily (although that might come) but for the skills of the writer/reviewer/critic. Another type of review is one that focuses on "technical" merit. This is best when looking at consumer products, technical products, automobiles, etc. How much memory does it have? How much horsepower? Does it get the same gas mileage as advertised? What is the fit & finish of the reviewed product? And so on. As a general rule, however, I have reached the age when I look for reviews/criticism in the following circumstanc...

  • 01:28 AM - RangerWickett mentioned Morrus in post Sell Me On WotBS / Zeitgeist
...the adventure that literally involves the PCs on a train. So, well, that's my horn. Toot toot. If you want to get a fuller sense of the campaign, there are a lot of GMs who post on the E.N. Publishing forum about their campaigns. To MoutonRustique's comment, I still did all the conversions to 4e on the adventures that were written for Pathfinder. I love that 4e lets you pace fights well and create all sorts of brief threats that need to be dealt with, as opposed to 3e/PF's style of "did you save? you're totally fine with no narrative effect at all. did you fail? you may as well take a nap." (I wish 4e had not had the odd math where everything scaled so obviously for the good guys and bad guys, and I wish there hadn't been so many niche powers, feats, and magic items that clogged up the character builder. But you could run the game with just the physical books and you wouldn't be overwhelmed with options.) The best suggestion I got for ZEITGEIST encounter design came from Morrus, who insisted every power of every enemy have a short sensory description. That led to me, later in the campaign, using that description section to work in dialogue that enemies might say during the fight, to give the fights more personality. I found that often when I converted a monster from PF to 4e, I'd add some more tricks or narrative beats to its attacks, and then go back and add those to the PF version too so the Pathfinder players wouldn't miss out. Like in adventure 5, one encounter has some gremlins, which in PF just make you roll twice and take the worse result. In the 4e version, I instead tweaked the mechanic so they specifically messed with guns - if you tried to shoot at them, the gun would click but not fire, but if you stayed still and kept aiming until the start of your next turn, it would fire then. If you moved before then, the gun would go off as soon as it wasn't aligned with the gremlin. I put that same schtick into the PF version, even though it sort of goes ...

  • 12:24 AM - Tony Vargas mentioned Morrus in post Toward a Theory of 6th Edition
... to how every Warlock receives a Book of Shadows/Pact Weapon/Improved familiar at 3rd level. Not at a point where it would be most logical given their their relationship with their patron, but at level 3. The Rogue deals extra damage when they catch the enemy unawares or flank them to a degree no other class can. These characters are not functioning in accordance with the law that every Fighter gets followers. that every Warlock gets a pact gift, or Rogues are unique in getting a bonus to damage from an ambush regardless of how much sense it does or doesn't make. The They represent any number of events, tropes, including fate, luck, and plot contrivances that would result in the desired effect. Basically, it's a mechanic that can actually impact part of the game's narrative. They haven't been especially common in D&D as compared to many other RPGs, but they've pretty much always been there in one form or another. Hit points & saving throws are another example, and, as Morrus points out, the debates those spawned go way back (though with the reverse of the emphasis you typically get, today), not just to the early days of these forums and to UseNet and BBSs and Out on a Limb, but, apparently, to people just harassing EGG about it enough that he wrote a whole treatise on the topic of hps in the 1e DMG. ;)

  • 11:49 PM - Hussar mentioned Morrus in post Discovery Trailer
I'm not entirely sure I liked the 3rd ep. Some good, bad and very bad. The Good: Yup, I agree with Morrus, this show is freaking GORGEOUS. And, it's probably the hardest SF version of Trek to date. I kinda like that they're giving it a more hard SF look. Yup, the sets are too damn dark. Grr. Hopefully that will shift later on. Michael is a badass. I do love the scene where she kicks the crap out of the convicts. Although, that being said, she's appearing to be a LOT more emotional and a lot less Vulcan in this episode. Guess it makes sense. Just a big shift in how I saw the character. The interplay between Saru and Michael. That's a great dynamic. You can tell Saru truly respects Michael but, also doesn't trust her and blames her for the death of the Captain. I realy look forward to seeing how this plays out. "Did he just shush us?" is probably the best line I've heard in a long, long time. The Bad: Ok, why did we have the prison transport scene? Three throwaway characters for Michael to put the slippers to? Curly Haired Barklay - come on. Massive alle...

  • 06:34 PM - Leatherhead mentioned Morrus in post Does a D&D Videogame have to be turn-based?
I am also playing Divinity 2 at the moment, it's rather fun. But if you are interested in a totally different kind of RPG that also does turn based combat extremely well: Consider playing the Mario & Luigi rpg games. In particular, the "action command" system is something worth poaching. I have also heard good things about Mario + Rabbids Kingdom Battle, of all things (which itself borrows heavily from the xcom series, a turn based tactical game). Also Morrus The turns were intended to be "behind the scenes" but there was a setting you could change to make the game auto-pause.

  • 05:13 PM - Dannyalcatraz quoted Morrus in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
So just send one ship first. Or even just a probe. Ship or probe goes in. Gets blown up. Kaylon receive no data on what happened because the action is on the other side of the event horizon. Only if the ship or probe returns, do they get data- prey destroyed or disappeared.
  • 04:25 PM - Dannyalcatraz quoted Morrus in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
If they could hide in the black hole safely, why couldn’t the Kaylons come in to take a look? They hid behind a curtain and the Kaylons spent two days peering at the curtain but treating it as an impassable barrier. Obviously they knew they were in there. Did the good guys have technology that the Kaylons didn’t? I think the Kaylon didn’t want to waltz into an ambush. They couldn’t see beyond the event horizon, so going in on their prey’s tail would have set them up for taking weapon fire right where it hurt. Besides the bad physics, though, I wonder why- when they had perfect camouflage- they didn’t simply emerge from the event horizon at a different point from where they entered. THEY wasted 2 days watching Kaylons.

This branding stuff is getting scary. Well, it's always been like this. As soon as something doesn't have that WotC sticker on it, folks just push it to one side, regardless of how good it is. But, you're right, it is scary.
  • 04:21 PM - DMMike quoted Morrus in post There's An Official ALIEN RPG Coming!
“The Alien saga isn’t about superheroes with superior firepower,” says game director Härenstam. “It’s about placing ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, and testing the endurance of the human spirit against inhuman atrocities and impossible odds . . . Emulating the dramatic arc of an Alien film, these survival challenges promise escalating stakes and fast (often brutal) gameplay where most players aren’t expected to last the night. Their first cinematic scenario, Chariot of the Gods written by sci-fi novelist Andrew E.C. Gaska (Death of the Planet of the Apes), is included in the core manual. More cinematic modules and game expansions are already in production, with direct tie-ins to Fox’s future plans for the franchise slated for 2020 and beyond. Impossible odds? That's when D&D players throw up their hands and say "well why don't you just kill my character then?" I've seen it happen. Heck, I've probably done it. So I'm expecting the game to take a step back from role-play...

  • 09:57 AM - Vampifan quoted Morrus in post Question regarding the Lawgiver and damage with PreGen characters
You add the number of skill dice you have. So if you have 3 (2d6) in pistols, you add 2. This exactly. Basically, the more skilled you are with a weapon, the more damage you can inflict, which makes perfect sense to me.

  • 10:51 PM - Demetrios1453 quoted Morrus in post New WotC Game Studio Headed By Bioware's James Ohlen
Ex-Bioware designer James Ohlen is in D&D news a lot right now! He’s behind the Odyssey of the Dragonlords Kickstarter, the new Heroes of Baldur’s Gate hardcover, and is now also heading up a game studio for WotC! 106065 Ohlen was a lead designer and writer for Baldur's Gate, Neverwinter Nights, Knights of the Old Republic, and Dragon Age: Origins and more. According to PC Gamer, Ohlen is opening up a new game studio in Texas for WotC. He said "I didn’t think that I would be coming back to the game industry so soon but working with Wizards is a once-in-a-lifetime opportunity. Our mutual love of RPGs, world-building, and interactive storytelling is a perfect match." It’s not a D&D project though. It’s original IP of some kind -- WoTC says it "will focus on the creation of original IP outside of the Magic: The Gathering and Dungeons & Dragons brand." Still, a WotC-owned game studio could mean D&D games in the future. Is it a video game studio? Unclear! WotC says it's a "multimedia stud...

  • 05:34 PM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post What do you look for in a good tabletop gaming chair?
I’m not sure I look for qualities any different to any other chair! Well, I imagine most of us don't have dedicated spaces with purpose-designed gaming tables, either. Out dining rooms and living rooms are serving as gaming spaces, so the chairs have to serve general purposes. Some of the makers of gaming tables, however, make chairs to match. They are *EXPENSIVE*.

  • 03:03 PM - Myzzrym quoted Morrus in post What do you think of this Kickstarter page?
Well, the books are already made, using the established EN5ider trade dress (and one of them was released in 2017!) It's the Kickstarter page itself I'm really after thoughts on, rather than the actual books. Ooops, my apologies. In that case it's fairly straightforward, I think it's pretty clear and the page displays what the book is about, so no complaints here!
  • 02:08 PM - Myzzrym quoted Morrus in post What do you think of this Kickstarter page?
No, we don't copy WotC's trade dress. I understand about straight up copying, and that's not what I mean. I prefer when the style remains relatively close to the other books I already own (or marries well together), so there is a certain continuity. Here I really feel like it's completely different and it clashes with the existing official material.
  • 08:56 AM - Caliburn101 quoted Morrus in post Has Paizo ever talked about releasing their adventures in 5E format?
They're grown adults and extremely competent business people. Yes - thinking they are being knee-jerk is foolish. You don't build a successful business without a good dose of business acumen and common sense. However - brands have been known (through in some cases an inability to evolve their business model) to die on their feet by doggedly sticking to 'what worked back in the day'. In fact it is a common enough reason for falling over in business. Blockbuster might still exist if they had seized upon the new paradigm and embraced downloads and streaming. 5th Edition and it's owners have created a system which allows new people in by being penetrable and inclusive, and have nevertheless kept the spirit of D&D robust enough to reconcile many previous version champion groups. That's gold right there, and the reason (alas...) that it eclipses all other systems. Roleplay used to be a lot smaller and system varied - now it has grown into being more inclusive to people but far less s...
  • 12:25 AM - pukunui quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 2
So are Jon and Dany headed for conflict? She can be quite murdery about people who challenge her right to rule the world, and he’s now a potential threat to that. I’ve always thought she’s got a bit of Cersei in her. And possibly also a little of her insane father as well. I think there is going to be some trouble. Based on her reaction, her first thought was that Jon poses a threat to her, rather than that she's been sleeping with her nephew after all. Are we assuming the white walkers are not the end game threat, BT just the first half of the season? (Three eps... that won’t be wrapped up next week, surely? Alhugh we know one episode is the biggest battle ever filmed, which I’m guessing is next week). No, it would seem they're not the end game. My guess would be that the survivors from the battle against the white walkers will march on King's Landing to face Cersei, Euron, and the Golden Company. After all, we've yet to see that bit from Bran's vision of a dragon's shadow on King's L...
