I think this would be a fun little experiment series. 5e's bounded accuracy has made it where high level characters, while strong, are supposed to be toppled by the mob. Numbers mean more than level in 5e. So lets see how well that plays out in practice. In this series, we will take a pretty high level character (11th), and see how well they do against a mob of their lesser (1st level )...

I rather think that depends upon what the focus & intent of the game is. Just this weekend, I played a game which had no combat mechanic. The PCs weren't people addressing their challenges via personally applying physical force, so no system for doing so was included. We didn't miss it. If the intended action in a game is "kill things and take their stuff" then yes, your game needs a combat...

Why do you need rules for one, but not the other? GMs are capable of just saying, "Yes, this social interaction plays out in this manner, with these effects," and do so fairly, but they are somehow incapable of doing so with combat? They can't take a player's description of physical and magical actions, and just run with that like they can social interaction? That, really, is kind of...

No, thatís the opposite of what I just said. :) It literally just does what it says in that paragraph ó to benefit from higher quality equipment, you need an appropriate skill. You canít benefit from an exceptional quality pistol without enough ranks in pistols. Same with armour.

See Burst attacks on page 99. Area attacks use a single attack roll (in this case AGI (throwing) or similar) vs VITAL DEFENSE of all targets, and a single damage roll. Otherwise it is resolved just like any other attack roll.

The thing about milestone leveling that breaks the association of levels to combat is that it gets applied when you reach the milestone, *however* you reach the milestone. It doesn't have to be "you gain a level when you hit a milestone." It can be, "you gain some number of XP when you hit a milestone." And I think that fixes all the issues with milestone leveling you mention. People who...

I think you are missing the point a bit. Folks are asking whether "violent" is the "natural state" for humans. They then have to turn and look for what the "natural state" for humans actually is... and wind up reaching for straws, because they want to find the thing analogous to the feral cat, when no such thing exists. Basically, "natural" human behavior is everything we already see. ...

You aren't the only one in the thread that has tried to refer to something like the human "natural state". I was speaking to the entire concept with your post as merely a jumping off point, as it was the most recent to use the concept. No. Just as a wild cat is not "without cat influence". Wild is variously, "in a natural environment" or "undomesticated" - which I restated as 'without...

One option missed in the OP is "Ineffable: The exact nature of the gods is not known, or undetermined. Divine magic happens, but nobody has proof of why or how." This is how most of my games run - unless or until the actual nature of divine magic impact play (so, it becomes mechanically- or plot-relevant), then I don't bother to specify. This allows for more belief systems in the world.

The scientific community recognizes "good" and "evil" as human concepts, not natural states of the universe. Splitting the party to chase down goblins in the woods is a questionable choice, and when they did that, they handled the consequences. There's a little-realized fact that there's no such thing as a no-holds-barred safe space. Safe spaces need boundaries, and the boundaries that are useful and safe for one group may not be for another.

Don't ask, "What would be a good metric?" Ask instead: "What matters to you about a game?" Not just as a thought exercise - Make an actual list of things that matter to you. We can try to separate what of those things are GM/group dependent, and what's rules-dependent, and what measures we could put that could be useful. Metrics should be chosen to answer specific questions.

Okay. But do you not recognize that means the strength of your argument comes only from your personal credibility? Do you even want that? Do you really want anyone to change their behavior based on what you admit is merely a subjective sense? I mean, apply that to basically *any other real problem people face* - do you want people acting on subjective senses, or real, solid information? ...

"...the whole hobby..."? Where are you getting the idea that anything other than a few vocal people here and on social media even give a fetid dingo's kidney about this - or are even aware of it? I mean that sincerely - where are you getting the impression that any significant portion of "the whole hobby" is focused on something other than their own lives and gaming sessions? Remember that...

It's not like a car. It's much more subjective and much more of an art. You can directly and objectively measure a car's horsepower or weight, but you can't do that with an RPG. I don't think anything can substitute for actually trying the thing. All the graphs in the world won't give you a sense of how you feel when you play the game.

I don't believe any of the victims of the Salem witch trials were running role playing games, so they are perhaps not a great example from which to extrapolate.

I think you have a problem in that you are discussing what you see as a general issue, in a thread about an incident that does not support your points well at all. Find a documented incident where public shaming had a major impact on a GM, and it turns out the public was really wrong, and you might have something. But here, what you have are hypothetical, things you *fear* can happen, but for...

  • 06:23 PM - RangerWickett mentioned Morrus in post Arena map for Nalaam
I'd talked with Morrus a few times about creating a map pack zip file with the highest resolution files of all the maps and selling it for a couple bucks on RPGNow, but we designed the maps to be in a book, not printed at scale for tabletop play. I'm not sure it'd be worth the hassle. Do you have a map in mind in particular?

  • 06:19 AM - Satyrn mentioned Morrus in post Firearms help needed please
If you're going to make firearms deal the same damage as archaic weapons, why even have firearms at all? That kind of defeats the point doesn't it? Aye. That's rather the heart of my question. If his players are cool with a rifle being as deadly as a sword, as Morrus seems to suggest he would be, then making them equal would work. But if it rubs them wrong, as it does you, then it would be a poor fix. Akthough, in thinking of a reply to your question, I've had another thought, an addition to my earlier suggestion. What I suggest the OP do is this: Have rifles deal longbow damage and pistols deal shortbow damage, as I already said, and then lower the damage on all archaic weapons by a die size. Call the whole thing a new game, 5e Modern, and pretend this is the way the game universe always was - meant to model action movies and cop shows where the protagonists are shot at constantly and survive the most ludicrous barrages of gunfire, from gattling guns, helicopters and all manner of that sort.

  • 01:38 AM - Jester David mentioned Morrus in post D&D 5e nearing 800,000 copies sold?
I was under the impression that AD&D numbers in the heyday of the 80's rpg craze were in the low millions, but maybe that was over the whole life of 1e. Or maybe, I'm just pulling those numbers out of my hat. As Morrus says, it was very possibly in that range. But TSR was notoriously bad with its figures, and so it's hard to say. Very likely it's still below the peak of 1984, but it's close enough that in a year or two it could pass 1e...

  • 10:18 PM - RangerWickett mentioned Morrus in post [ZEITGEIST] Kaja Stewart's Fate (Spoilers)
Morrus, does Trailseeker include the compilations of the ZEITGEIST adventures? I never thought to check since I wasn't handling that subscription. But sadly no, we never had a specific list of changes between individual adventures and the hardcovers. Most of the changes were minor, and none happen after adventure 6, I think.

  • 01:27 PM - Kryx mentioned Morrus in post D&D Promises to Make the Game More Queer
It's not a double standard, because you are comparing two different things. The reverse of "I'm gay and you must accept me" is not "I'm anti-gay and you must accept me", it's "I'm straight and you must accept me". And guess what? People do accept straight people! There are no anti-straight marches. "I object to your existence" is not the equivalent to "I exist", and the two should never be compared to each other. I really admire your stance on this issue. It's great to see a community leader take such a stance. This hobby, like the world as a whole, has no room for homophobia. While many in this thread will claim "Oh, I'm not homophobic" we've all seen their words that dance around the issue, but we know what is truly meant. Thanks again for standing up against hate Morrus.
  • 04:14 AM - Cognomen's Cassowary mentioned Morrus in post D&D Promises to Make the Game More Queer
Morrus : As somebody who sings with the local LGBTQ chorus (as an ally--I don't want to claim my collaborators' experiences as my own), who has played D&D with at least four LGBTQ individuals, and who has heard a smattering of the stories of exclusion--people who can't take their spouses to family reunions, others who can only go home for Christmas if they accept being called by the wrong name and the wrong pronouns--I personally thank you for confronting bigotry where you see it and for making enworld an inclusive community.
  • 12:17 AM - FrogReaver mentioned Morrus in post D&D Promises to Make the Game More Queer
@Morrus You may want to consider revising your community header and rule statement to close some loopholes in it that technically are allowed by it but which you will be equally as unpleased with.

@Morrus needs to increase the PHP memory limit to something larger than 128M as a test, just to make sure it's not something simple. The error I'm reproducing, however, is over a value smaller than the current limit, so I'll troubleshoot some more.

  • 12:13 AM - Quickleaf mentioned Morrus in post What resources do you track in play?
Morrus I was tracking renown/reputation in our Night Below / Out of the Abyss mashup campaign. Not exactly a resource, but here's an example of what I did with my own adaptation of the Renown rules from the DMG/PHB: Renown (Cairngormís Hollow) Renown 1: PCs get offers of free services, sporadic free room & board, occasional offers of marriage, or small gifts like a few chickens or a goat. Renown 2: PCs get consistent free room & board, preferential treatment by guards who overlook minor infractions, and access to special quests from Lady Nydaridien. (land deed, Calrow Ruins). Renown 3: PCs treated as villagers and brought in on village ritual practices and voting, free modest lifestyle in village, Lady Nydaridien gives free use of horses in livery stables. Renown 4: PCs receive discounts on special purchases, and are afforded the same level of respect as village elders and Lady Nydaridien herself, gain access to dryad Wyraís spellcasting service and special downtime activity involving...

  • 06:47 PM - LordEntrails mentioned Morrus in post WotC Names 10 "Adepts" On Their DMs Guild Store
So, back to the topic at hand (Sorry Morrus, replied before I saw your post to move on. I was quite ... put out about the comment I quoted and posted on to read all the replies before replying myself.). I do agree with the previous comment that I don't see how this helps build community. It might help give confidence to new people as to how to find good content, but I'm still not sure about that. IMO, good reviews and ratings, and perhaps a few trustworthy bloggers doing detailed reviews might actually help much more than this. But, at least it's something. Kudos to WotC to adapting and trying new things. They've been doing much more of this (trying new things) since the inception of 5E, and the pace is only quickening.

  • 05:00 PM - Ath-kethin mentioned Morrus in post How long have you been gaming?
My starting point was the tabletop boardgame HeroQuest, back in 1990 or '91. Then my mom bought me a copy of ICE's Middle Earth Roleplaying Game around '92 and I couldn't make heads or tails of it. In '93 my friend bought a copy of Earthdawn, and from that point I was hooked. A year and a half later I was introduced to D&D (or more specifically, AD&D 2nd Edition) and that was that. @Morrus: I've been teaching my 3-1/2 year old the basics, moving in through the old D&D cartoon and the new Tales of Equestria game (and HeroQuest), so newbies exist. It will just be a while until he can spell well enough to join ENWorld.

Heh, I like it, but I have no idea what the recipe for virtual gunpowder would be. Also, does that make @Morrus a Metron? @Morrus is an Organian, for sure. As for virtual gunpowder, you might want to try remodulating the transmogrifiers that govern the recplicator database. Or remove the field dampers on an EMH emitter and beam the stuff out of the holodeck. Both of those have worked for me in the past.
  • 08:55 PM - oneshot mentioned Morrus in post Star Trek Adventures: Now that the full rules are out, what do you think?
Okay, everyone - here's what to do. Make sure your speakers are on and open this link in another tab. Go ahead. It's nothing creepy and it's safe for work. Once you've got that going - do it! - come back here. Cool. You're back. Now imagine the scene, folks: oneshot and aramis erak on Cestus III, squaring off against one another as the Metrons look on...or, in this case, as the rest of us watch them spar over dice mechanics. I'll bring the pink and green space marshmallows (ala' the buffet in Journey to Babel) and we'll see who wins the dice mechanic stats championship grudge match. Heh, I like it, but I have no idea what the recipe for virtual gunpowder would be. Also, does that make Morrus a Metron?

  • 08:56 AM - Caliburn101 quoted Morrus in post Has Paizo ever talked about releasing their adventures in 5E format?
They're grown adults and extremely competent business people. Yes - thinking they are being knee-jerk is foolish. You don't build a successful business without a good dose of business acumen and common sense. However - brands have been known (through in some cases an inability to evolve their business model) to die on their feet by doggedly sticking to 'what worked back in the day'. In fact it is a common enough reason for falling over in business. Blockbuster might still exist if they had seized upon the new paradigm and embraced downloads and streaming. 5th Edition and it's owners have created a system which allows new people in by being penetrable and inclusive, and have nevertheless kept the spirit of D&D robust enough to reconcile many previous version champion groups. That's gold right there, and the reason (alas...) that it eclipses all other systems. Roleplay used to be a lot smaller and system varied - now it has grown into being more inclusive to people but far less s...
  • 12:25 AM - pukunui quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 2
So are Jon and Dany headed for conflict? She can be quite murdery about people who challenge her right to rule the world, and heís now a potential threat to that. Iíve always thought sheís got a bit of Cersei in her. And possibly also a little of her insane father as well. I think there is going to be some trouble. Based on her reaction, her first thought was that Jon poses a threat to her, rather than that she's been sleeping with her nephew after all. Are we assuming the white walkers are not the end game threat, BT just the first half of the season? (Three eps... that wonít be wrapped up next week, surely? Alhugh we know one episode is the biggest battle ever filmed, which Iím guessing is next week). No, it would seem they're not the end game. My guess would be that the survivors from the battle against the white walkers will march on King's Landing to face Cersei, Euron, and the Golden Company. After all, we've yet to see that bit from Bran's vision of a dragon's shadow on King's L...

Just popped in after a few months ... man, this thread. A bunch of people hatewatching a TV show they don't like and making sure everybody knows it. It's the most depressing thing I ever saw. God, why flagellate yourselves like this? For me there are a couple different reasons. One, is that I write a lot of stuff for a Star Trek Adventures fansite (https://continuingmissionsta.com/) and keeping up with Star Trek is part of that voluntary "job", in case I want to stat out new ships or races or technology. Second, I have a compulsive need to "finish" things. I can't start TV series halfway through, and once I've started I need to finish seasons. I can count the number of series I've walked away from and not seen through to cancellation or completion on one hand. Not finishing the season nags at my brain as something undone, like having left the stove on. The final is that I identify as a "Star Trek Fan". I've been a Star Trek Fan since I was eight years old. I've been a Star Trek ...

I'm sure the sheer amount of photography of that building over the last century means no detail will be left undocumented. Copying it will be easy, as long as they can spend the money. That said, isn't it a private building owned by the Catholic Church? They don't need donations or French taxpayer money to rebuild it. They have billions. I've heard it's a little more complicated than the Catholic church owns it. I'm not positive, but from what I've heard... The French Government owns it but allows Catholic Services. They share cooperation between the two in maintaining it. It is very expensive to maintain and thus most of the money to maintain it is via donations rather than simply being from French Taxpayers. Thus, any new constructions and such are normally from donation money and such.

  • 07:23 AM - GreyLord quoted Morrus in post Star Wars VIII: The Last Jedi argument
Who? Shorelock Holmes! You know, he had a famous brother named Sherlock that everyone always woos over...but poor Shorelock is always forgotten. Shorelock was the beach dude who was an awesome surfer. If there was a wave, he'd surf it. Unfortunately, he couldn't get further away than 400 meters before he'd have too much temptation and have to catch a big one. He always was stuck somewhere close to the shore. On waves, he'd obviously surf back to shore...and when he wanted to go inland, just missed the surf far too much. He is famous for inventing the quotes... Dude Far Out Spaced Curl And other such famous things. He'd probably be better known along with his side kick Watch Her, but that Sherlock just seemed to get all the media attention back in the day instead of Shorelock.
  • 01:06 AM - Mistwell quoted Morrus in post Is Mike Mearls Happy Hour still a thing?
Sure. Any location - whether big like Twitter or small like here - is just a potential sparking point for a bigger effect. Usually it isnít, but sometimes something happens, and careers end and brands get damaged. One guy at a company staying quiet for a bit is prudent.l, lest it escalate (which it probably wouldnít, but itís not a risk worth taking). I agree. It's what I'd advise him to do - stay quiet.

God, why flagellate yourselves like this?A few months? You posted in this thread five days ago. I personally have no stakes in this thread - I don't watch the show, mostly because I refuse to pay a TV network for "special content" they refuse to air on their regular network (it seems like a bad precedent to set) - but it seems like allowing those who want to vent about this show here in this thread at least keeps it localized. Didn't you build a "positive comments only" thread about the show, specifically to keep the complaints here and not there? So why not let them vent here, where you should be able to safely ignore them? Johnathan

  • 06:21 AM - doctorbadwolf quoted Morrus in post If you were in the Star Wars universe which side would you pick?
You may call them terrorists, but that's not what 'terrorist' means to the rest of us. "Terrorism is ... the use of intentionally indiscriminate violence as a means to create terror among masses of people; or fear to achieve a religious or political aim. It is used in this regard primarily to refer to violence during peacetime or in war against non-combatants (mostly civilians and neutral military personnel).' [wikipedia] Terrorists attack civilians in order to provoke terror. Fighting against the military might make them violent activists or secessionists or something, but to be a terrorist you are doing things that the Rebellion definitely does not do. Your personal definition of terrorism is yours, of course, but the common definition of terrorism does not encompass the actions of the Rebels. Might be a bit of a cultural thing. In the US, laws about terrorism are a lot broader. For example, the US Code of Federal Regulations just says "the unlawful use of force and violenc...

One of the issues is the fact that the trees that gave the wood for the roof, made up a whole forest and well that tree AFAIK no longer exist. https://www.architecturaldigest.com/story/notre-dame-cathedral-restoration but from a quick look it looks liek the French government owns it https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Notre-Dame_de_Paris#Ownership https://news.ubisoft.com/en-us/article/348227/Supporting-Notre-Dame-de-Paris http://assassinscreed.com/unity-notredame/ I've got to say this is very cool of them. I can't help but wonder if the laser-scanning they did of the building for the game could be used by the restoration effort. https://news.yahoo.com/amer...

Historically, editions have changed with design teams. Whoever makes 6E, it will be the designers coming up after Mearls and Crawford, etc. I dunno, that seems like a hell of a dice to roll? Better to ask the current designers to make the adjustments needed to improve the current rule set? A 5.1e rather than a 6e. Three big improvements I can recommend off the bat: 1) make the starter set more new DM friendly, much more hand holding is needed. 2) reorg the PHB so that how to play the game comes first, not chargen. 3) reorg the DMG so that running the game is first, not bloody world building! :D Oh and some rules tweaks too...

You may call them terrorists, but that's not what 'terrorist' means to the rest of us. ... Terrorists attack civilians in order to provoke terror. Fighting against the military might make them violent activists or secessionists or something, but to be a terrorist you are doing things that the Rebellion definitely does not do. Might be a bit of a cultural thing. In the US, laws about terrorism are a lot broader. For example, the US Code of Federal Regulations just says "the unlawful use of force and violence against persons or property to intimidate or coerce a government, the civilian population, or any segment thereof, in furtherance of political or social objectives", which the Alliance clearly fits. Australia has also charged people with terrorism for attacking a military base. I think discussing this further may get a little political, so I'll just point out that Wikipedia also says, "There is no universal agreement on the definition of terrorism." In any case, I'm okay not c...

Political assassination though? The rebels were a non state actor who used force to kill a lawful head of state. Not claiming Palps wasn't evil or used illegal means to assume power. An in...

Was WotC responsible for taking away penalties to Strength for female characters? Thatís not my recollection. I donít recall there being restriction like that in 2e.

While that is a deliberate choice, I think Iíll just make the decision for people and put the skill in there, as so many people keep asking. I prefer leaving it open ended, but it seems Iím alone in that! I think suggesting 'evocation plus [one or two relevant non-magical skills specified by Morrus]' is a good compromise. It provides flexibility for groups or character concepts that don't want to use the full spell build system and would prefer to stick to career exploits, while providing good guidance on acceptable skills for GMs and players who like their systems crunchy and specific. But in that case, be sure to let the magical careers take the non-magical skill needed to use their exploit. :)
