Early on there were two - DEFENSE, and MENTAL DEFENSE. Then there were three - MELEE, RANGED, and MENTAL, and so it meant MELEE and RANGED. Now there are four, but it still means MELEE and RANGED. It's a little historical remnant which could probably be done away with.

I dunno if we have to worry about it being "paramount" in general. This is not about character advancement, or about classes, or about particular powers, or even a feat. We are talking, honestly, about a very basic setup - getting the drop on the opponent, and being able to attack before they realize you are there. A very basic tactic, used throughout history. The logic being used to...

It's a good question, and something which completely slipped through playtesting! I would, on reflection, say that immunity overrides vulnerability, so you'd end up immune to both.

Um, where I come from, "consequentialism" is the philosophic position that the morality of actions are judged by their consequences, and I'm pretty sure that's not what you mean here. If, "basic consequentialism" to you mean, "things act like in the real world," I'm just going to have to say that I don't think we can make general statements. And, if I'm playing Clark Kent? The only...

For once, I largely agree with Celebrim - not just on this, but on the entire post. I have some additional thoughts I'll add. In a game theory sense, the stakes are known, but probabilistic. It is like playing a hand of blackjack for the right to make a spin on a roulette wheel. You don't know the exact outcome, but you can totally work out the expected return on the bet. I...

Alternatively, we say that the game rules define the role you are playing in that context, and you are defining "lick of sense" by reference to a world outside the fictional one you're playing in... and *that* doesn't make a whole lot of sense. "Roleplaying," is not generally, "rules do not apply, do what you want, so long as it sounds good." Role playing is informed and shaped by...

I can understand why you feel differently. However, I think you might be allowing "realism" to override several points (most already made, but I'll reiterate): For one thing - this orc is on guard. It isn't that he's actually helpless - tied up or unconscious. He is bored, but not insensate. He can still hear the twang of the bow in the distance, is still able to move, roll with the impact...

Our group described Mage: The Ascension as the best game when in the right hands, and the absolute worst game when in the wrong hands. Given that FATE has The Dresden Files right there for you to manipulate to your whims, yeah, that'd be a good alternative.

The capacity for hatred is aleph-null. The capacity for gnomes to make your hatred look pompous is at least aleph-one. The capacity for paladins to look down their noses at your self-centered antipathies is somewhere around aleph-fifteen. I'd argue that the arc of history bends toward apathy, but I don't care enough to bother.

It is an attack. The attacker is unseen by the target, so the attack is rolled with advantage. The PC is attacking with surprise. The character gets to apply whatever benefits are within their power (like, Sneak Attack, if they have that ability). But there's no "perfect shot - instant kill". If you can't pull together enough hit points of damage... well, that shot wasn't as perfect as you...

None tried it - we took it that this was a religious stricture, and doing so was roughly equivalent to a Paladin violating their alignment/code restrictions - they'd lose their powers, and have to find a way to atone. I think we assumed that clerics and druids who fell became fighters with d8s for hit points, which kinda sucked, so nobody risked it. One exception was made: Old-style bards,...

Yah. If a 15 year old city kid decides to play a ranger, you shouldn't expect the *player* to know proper approaches to how to acquire food or shelter, or follow tracks. The game very explicitly works to help you play characters who know and do things you, the player, cannot. Expecting player understanding of the character's domains of knowledge is not fair. People are so......

In cases where the character needs to take a physical action, yes. In cases like this, where what's called for is largely happening in the character's head, the result is apt to be ambiguous. If we are too picky about naming approaches, we risk the, "Well, *how* do you search the room? What *exactly* do you look at?" that was a hallmark of previous editions, and more recently replaced with...

It isn't like this is a modern forensics game, where the PC can choose to take pictures of image processing, or take samples to the lab for analysis for approaches. Nor are players likely to be forensic scientists, or even people who actually have the skills in question, that would be able to name approaches would actually be fruitful. Here's some of my ideas. Taking the three key actions that I mentioned earlier: parkouring up a wall in a narrow alley, wall running, and running up a wall to catch a ledge. The core idea is that, like jumping, parkouring is keyed to 10+dexterity or acrobatics bonus. Parkouring up a wall in an alley or narrow corridor: Alley must be narrow enough to allow this: 5 feet max width (could be...

There's this large swath of territory between, "this has no impact" and "the game depends on". Maybe we can consider what happens in that in-between, rather than driving to extreme strawmen used to assign "failure" to a GM, hey what?

The urban element is a major trope of the genre from its roots in fiction. Saying "urban is merely a setting" is like saying for Space Opera "laser/blaster guns are merely another weapon". Yes, you can play a Space Opera game without laser guns blasting away, but they are so common in the fiction as to be ubiquitous, and it is probably fair to build you game with the assumption that such things...

I think shifting initiative to Int is a good way to reduce the dex super stat and make int more well rounded. Initiative is always good. The cha = inspiration is solid. Gives player some control over when they get advantage benefits. Wisdom because of perception is already pretty good, I see it as a dump stat less than the other two.

Yup, some of them run quite hot. Purposely and some not so. So the heat can be used as a weapon or defensive measure. Some have heavy bone plating. Some can generate 'armour' or harden their skin in select areas, to either protect the nap or other areas, or to add bonus damage to melee strikes. A few other uses as well.

Probably not in a Dredd campaign. Magic fits in with a bunch of other worlds of 2000ad but Dredd is more sci-fi. Maybe if they were psionic artifacts instead?

To me the two simplest rules to fix this: 1) a penalty when falling unconscious. That way you always take some pain. 2) a person who falls unconscious always loses their next turn, no matter when healed. This means initiative is less relevant. Right now if I drop and the healer goes before my next turn, I’m barely inconvenienced. But if I lose my turn regardless of when I’m healed, it’s a...

If the weapon is powerful enough.. vaporizing the head and neck would kill the Titan. Otherwise, treat it like a giant troll.. massive regeneration capability (which can take time), once the titan is wounded enough and goes down, gives the mech pilot time to slash the vulnerable spot, IF they know about it. Otherwise, the Titans would just come back with same numbers while mech pilots have to...

Liminal is a new RPG by Paul Mitchener, just launched by Modiphius. It deals with "the boundary between the modern day United Kingdom and the Hidden World- the world of secret societies of magicians, a police division investigating Fortean crimes, fae courts, werewolf gangs, and haunted places where the walls between worlds are thin." UPDATE: The core book appears to have already sold out. ...

Two new miniature sets are now available from Modiphius, for use with their Star Trek Adventures RPG. These are the Original Series Landing Party, and the Iconic Villains sets. These are 32mm scale, unpainted resin miniatures. This set contains one male officer and one female officer of the Andorian, Denobulan, Tellarite, and Vulcan species, as well as two male humanoid miniatures. ...

Thank you all for the recommendations! I'm going to look into the Oyster card, the West End show for the missus, the Beefeater tour, the British Museum, a bunch of other museums, and the Borough Market... Mind the gap. That's one I know! Would you say the travel guide is essential? I need to look into my phone options while I'm there. I was hoping to look up some stuff on the go (I'm told they're relatively inexpensive and my work might pay for it). ... keep your eyes peeled for things that won't be in any of the guidebooks. You find pretty awesome stuff that way. I think that's good advice and often try to do the same. Don't do the London Eye. Go up the nearby OXO tower - same height, same view, and spend the £20+ per person on drinks up there in the bar/restaurant. Expensive drinks, but you were gonna spent it anyway on the Eye!This sounds like a great alternative. And my wife mentioned the other day she was nervous about going on the Eye. Are reservations necessary at most good restau...
  • 05:06 AM - Razjah quoted Morrus in post How many halflings does it take to screw in a lightbulb
But why not? We're talking fantasy worlds where human armies can go up against ogres and worse. I don't think size has much more than an aesthetic place when it comes to fantasy races. I see your point, but in those stories, average non-adventuring humans gets housed by an ogre. You send multiple men against a single one, whole squads use numerical advantage against an ogre or giant. Siege engines are employed against large enough enemies. I look at three men swarming an ogre the same as three halflings swarming a human. In a one-on one fight, Joe Conscript will loose to an ogre. I expect the Halfling conscript to loose in much the same way. Without these huge obstacles the PC fighter dropping an ogre unassisted means less. I like to keep my NPCs typically level 1-3, with important Named NPCs being higher leveled- but I prefer lower leveled E6 style play. I guess it depends which game you're playing, of course. The way size is addressed is going to vary from system to system. This is a...
  • 04:33 AM - Razjah quoted Morrus in post How many halflings does it take to screw in a lightbulb
Sure they can! Unless you're saying that humans can never go toe-to-toe with giants and dragons? I'll be more specific. Halfling soldiers cannot effectively go toe-to-toe with other soldiers without magic and heavy support, which average soldiers in an infantry battle probably won't have.

They're a British company; they wouldn't go through the USPTO whatever happened. They'd use the Intellectual Property Office. GW may be a British company, but Amazon is an American company, the author is American, and they are asserting a trademark violation of something a US author wrote, and tried to sell through a US company to a US audience. So, unless the British Intellectual Property Office has jurisdiction in the United States that I am unaware of, GW would need to go through the United States Patent and Trademark Office to register a trademark stateside. Also, while I am certainly not a lawyer and know that we have lawyers here (S'mon and dannyalcatraz come to mind, and S'mon is specifically an expert on British IP law IIRC so he may be the best ENWorlder to weigh in on this issue), I was under the impression that common law trademark is pretty weak IP protection. Claiming a common law trademark on a phrase that can clearly be seen as in use in an entire literary genr...

  • 09:24 PM - DireWereTeddy quoted Morrus in post Making firearms more important
... busy typing. Overwatch: In the middle of a gun fight, everybody is behind barrels. One guy leans out, pops a round or two off, then hides again. The canny soldier positions himself so that the next time one of his enemies shows himself, he can shoot the villain. Taking aim at the last place he saw the guy shoot from, the soldier is ready to open fire. In my mind, overwatch covers an area not a specific target - it certainly does in computer games and tabletop skirmish games. He should be able to take a shot at *anyone* who pops their head out, not just one guy. I'd call aiming where one specific guy is to be "covering" or "specific overwatch" or -- well, I can't think of a good name. Marking. Dunno - you could have it as a specific form of overwatch which is better but only applies to that one target. That sounds more like a readied action. I want to shoot at this target when they break cover for any reason. Overwatch isn't the same thing. Overwatch is more generalized, like Morrus says; it's more like a readied action to shoot anything within a specific area or direction.
  • 09:12 PM - DireWereTeddy quoted Morrus in post Making firearms more important
Suppressive Fire (Combat Maneuver): Sometimes it becomes necessary to protect your allies from enemy fire. By doing so, you give them a chance to shoot back. As a standard action when wielding at least a semiautomatic weapon (or if you have the rapid reload feat), target a 20 ft. cone or a 35 ft. line from your current location and make a single CMB check. Until the start of your next turn, creatures with CMD less than your check take a -4 penalty to attack as long as they remain in the area. For this maneuver, add bonuses for cover and concealment to the targets’ CMD. Suppressive Fire draws attacks of opportunity. Suppressive Fire looks good, but here's a few considerations, depending on how 'realistic' you want. The first is that part of what makes suppressive fire effective is that you risk damage from the suppressive fire itself if you break cover. As it stands, I'm not seeing any reason for someone not to break cover and move for someplace outside the area. Maybe an attack of oppo...

  • 05:57 PM - Erekose quoted Morrus in post FASA's Star Trek RPG
I made this very simple one-page PDF which summarizes character types from various books/sources. I think a Triangle based campaign with a range of characters (a trader, a spy, a Starfleet officer, a Klingon, etc.) could be fun. Especially if you used the Ship Construction Manual and had them build and maintain their own ship. I always wanted to run a campaign like this one but the group disbanded (we all went to University!) before I had chance to do it!
  • 02:59 PM - malcolm_n quoted Morrus in post Making firearms more important
I still feel that covering fire, over watch, etc. need to be strengthened. Yes, it's covered by readied actions, but the existing rules don't do it well enough - as evidenced by the fact that nobody ever does it! In a firearm heavy environment, these things should be the default mode of operations.I see cover fire as aid another that would grant +2 to AC against the target of the cover fire. Overwatch is more reliant on the GM to have NPCs hide behind something, possibly with cover fire, that necessitates waiting for them to come out from behind cover. If we're strengthening them, maybe in addition to not suffering from cover/concealment, you get a +1 to the attack because you've been watching closely? Cover fire maybe gives the target -2 to attack if it gets hit. I don't think I'd want to shoehorn players into always trying to get these advantages. It should also be beneficial to sneak around while they think you're still there (bluff to put the hat on the crate) and get the jump on them (...

  • 07:48 PM - Derren quoted Morrus in post Making firearms more important
Maybe not stronger, but more accurate. Shooting someone from 3 feet away is very easy with a hi-tech recoilless laser gun! Easier even than, I daresay, whacking 'em with a sword. Actually shooting someone moving and dodging at close range is harder than at medium range.
  • 07:24 PM - Umbran quoted Morrus in post Subscription Thread
That means you had it turned on all this time...[/I] Where, "all this time," is probably, "since our recovery from the hack". There have been a few settings (like reply notifications) which did reset to default at the recovery, at least for me. Such is to be expected, and easy to fix with a couple of clicks.
  • 06:15 PM - Fiddleback quoted Morrus in post Miniatures for a Star Trek game?
Yep, people not ships. I don't mind if they're not Star Trek minis - any suitable generic sci-fi minis of people holding laser guns and not being clearly from Star Wars will suffice. Star Trek specific ones are just a bonus! That being the case, you might want to look through Noble Knight Games list of miniatures. They seem to have quite the variety of in print and out of print minis. http://www.nobleknight.com/ViewManuf.asp_Q_CategoryID_E_5
