The urban element is a major trope of the genre from its roots in fiction. Saying "urban is merely a setting" is like saying for Space Opera "laser/blaster guns are merely another weapon". Yes, you can play a Space Opera game without laser guns blasting away, but they are so common in the fiction as to be ubiquitous, and it is probably fair to build you game with the assumption that such things...

Has anyone created any guidelines for Parkour in 5e? I've got a bunch of roguish players (not all actual rogues) with high dexteritys, low strengths, and a fear of walls, climbing, etc :) I've been kind of winging it to this point but am thinking of trying to come up with a set of guidelines to allow them to use Acrobatics to parkour through some issues - parkouring up walls in narrow alleys,...

I think shifting initiative to Int is a good way to reduce the dex super stat and make int more well rounded. Initiative is always good. The cha = inspiration is solid. Gives player some control over when they get advantage benefits. Wisdom because of perception is already pretty good, I see it as a dump stat less than the other two.

Okay, there's a fundamental logical issue here. You spend a long post complaining about how WoD is fixed in one particular version of the supernatural, and then when someone points out that one corner of it isn't like that... that it can manage many different kinds of supernatural, you say it doesn't fit your fairly narrow image of what these supernatural people should be! The mage helping the bandit captain escape *is* the hint about what they are dealing with. You may want to telegraph offensive capabilities that are beyond level appropriate - save-or-die, or "this is a huge ancient dragon, not some punk hatchling". But I don't think you need to telegraph that an enemy has a well-considered escape plan, which doesn't harm the PCs. An escaped villain is one...

Yup, some of them run quite hot. Purposely and some not so. So the heat can be used as a weapon or defensive measure. Some have heavy bone plating. Some can generate 'armour' or harden their skin in select areas, to either protect the nap or other areas, or to add bonus damage to melee strikes. A few other uses as well.

If you want a bit of retro-future - what the past thought future technology would be like, go with 2nd. If you want a game that does a nod to understanding wireless technology, go with 5th, but be ready for people to be so paranoid that they won't use the technology in question,...

Well, families are still a thing, right? So, the Fantastic Four still works, today. The problem with FF movies has not been that "they don't work". It has been that Fox does not, at its core, understand superheroes, at least of the Marvel variety. They have fundamentally missed what is most important to the superhero properties they touch. For the Fantastic Four, that is about family. ...

That is by far the biggest factor I'm sure. I would also assume that he saves his second wind until much later to milk this advantage. 5) One more action surge.

To me the two simplest rules to fix this: 1) a penalty when falling unconscious. That way you always take some pain. 2) a person who falls unconscious always loses their next turn, no matter when healed. This means initiative is less relevant. Right now if I drop and the healer goes before my next turn, I’m barely inconvenienced. But if I lose my turn regardless of when I’m healed, it’s a...

I just think about it, and realize there are parts of play where the GM is acting more like a judge/referee, and parts of play where the GM is acting more like an author. The former I'd call adjudication, the latter, not. There's connotations to "adjudication" that I don't think...

Why do you need rules for one, but not the other? GMs are capable of just saying, "Yes, this social interaction plays out in this manner, with these effects," and do so fairly, but they are somehow incapable of doing so with combat? They can't take a player's description of physical and magical actions, and just run with that like they can social interaction? That, really, is kind of...

Off the top of my head I can't remember page numbers, but small or light = 2, medium = 3, large or heavy = 5.

Two rolls. One to determine where it lands, the other to attack all in the resultant burst.

No, that’s the opposite of what I just said. :) It literally just does what it says in that paragraph — to benefit from higher quality equipment, you need an appropriate skill. You can’t benefit from an exceptional quality pistol without enough ranks in pistols. Same with armour.

It's used exactly the way you quoted, from page 23. Lets you benefit from higher quality armour.

You roll the damage as normal and divide by two. There's no stun charge limit.

See Burst attacks on page 99. Area attacks use a single attack roll (in this case AGI (throwing) or similar) vs VITAL DEFENSE of all targets, and a single damage roll. Otherwise it is resolved just like any other attack roll.

Thanks for all your hard work last week, Morrus and darjr :) Welcome back! I re-upped my sub; I've been meaning to do it anyway! Worry when you don't see the folks returning after 14. :) Personally, this site is great and the products are really sound. Very, very few RPG sites last past 2 years let alone 20. KB

I’ll see if I can dig up some attendance figures next time. Edit - apparently they don’t give out those figures. From http://denaghdesign.com/pax-unplugged-it/ UPDATE: PAX Unplugged attendance was approximately 45,000, turnstile. I’m guessing that translates to about 30,000 unique attendees.

There's a (beta) character builder online: http://www.enworld.org/morrusdev/character.php (I wrote it myself to learn PHP, so it might not be perfect -- it doesn't apply exploits, for example, but it does list them for you). This seems to be using a different rules-set? Not only are the attributes and skills off, but it's lacking certain exploits and options, and has unusual notes like Androids selecting two modification choices and so on that aren't reflected in the 1.2 version of the book.

  • 03:58 PM - mike0liver121 quoted Morrus in post WOIN NEW Combat System
You’ve understood it correctly! The number he needs to hit is the target creature’s RANGED DEFENCE score. Ah, that does start to slot things in place. I hadn't realised the Ranged Defence score gave the score to be made. I shall leave you alone for a while and do some more reading. I do appreciate your help and, as a game designer (miniatures wargaming) I also appreciate the effort you have put into WOIN.
  • 03:55 PM - mike0liver121 quoted Morrus in post WOIN NEW Combat System
Spending a dice means removing it from your dice pool. For example, if you are rolling 6d6 and you want to spend 2d6 on extra damage, you roll 4d6 instead. That fits with what I thought - I have provided some additional info in a new post that may throw some more light on things. If you can find the time to respond to that, I think I shall be able to make progress. Thanks for the help.
  • 10:41 AM - CapnZapp quoted Morrus in post Cubicle 7 forums to close due to EU data law
I ensured we were OK for GDPR months ago. For a message board like this, it's not a very onerous task. We collect almost zero user data here (username, email, IP, basically) and it isn't shared anywhere. And yep, the functionality to delete an account is present if it becomes needed. We're good. If I understand it correctly, the issue isn't compliance. It is risk of litigation. Strike to Stun (the WFRP forums) is (also) shutting down (in part) because of GDPR. The reason given is that it's just not worth the risk of someone suing. Whether the site is compliant or not isn't the issue. The issue is that GDPR opens up an avenue of blackmail through the legal system, in that no hobby-run forum can afford a legal process and would be forced into giving in to whatever demands are met (most likely shutting the site anyway). This obviously applies primarily to EU-based sites (Server Goddess runs StS from Austria). Hobby sites run from the U.S., for instance can probably just shrug at any ...

If anybody from C7's forums comes over here, they're very welcome, of course. Heck, if there was a demand for it, I'd create an emergency subform for them like I did for WotC. How the heck do we delete accounts we didn't intend to create!?

  • 06:15 PM - BookBarbarian quoted Morrus in post “Who started it?” Initiative order
Sometimes a PC initiates combat and then the DM asks for initiative. That player then argues they should go first. Surprise rounds etc. have been (IMO) inelegantly used in these situations over various editions. I’m toying with a minor house rule — if somebody unexpectedly starts the fight, they don’t roll initiative. Everybody else does, then the person who started it goes first, with their initiative one point ahead of the first person to react. Might try that next game session! . I think I would resolve the Players stated action and then roll initiative.

Sometimes a PC initiates combat and then the DM asks for initiative. That player then argues they should go first. And the next encounter, when the people talking to the party suddenly attack them, the same player cries "Why are they going first? Why don't I get to roll initiative?" :-) What is wrong with the surprise rule?
  • 01:04 AM - Zardnaar quoted Morrus in post The Tinkerer: A New 5E Class
This seems like an unusual standard to hold D&D rules to. Its not I just wanted to see how far I could blow out the Tinkerer class just because. Tinkerers are not hte industrial revolution they are just fast at making stuff and they do not get it for free which is the balancing thing. Even using RL examples like the Venetian Arsenal they can't out produce mundane means unless you have a lot of them (1 for 1 they can). If you wanted a magitech campaign they are fine for example they might not fit a low magic setting though. But using a bit of imagination you could have tinkerer powered orbital shipyard in Spelljammer where they could crank out ships, it fits the setting and if you have all the worlds to ply getting a few tinkerers would not be that hard. You could also have something like Leonardo Da Vinchi's workshop, Tinkerer+artificer tag team combo on Eberron, tinkerer constructs the airship the artificer empowers it. They are not as efficient as RL industry but are better than...

  • 11:14 PM - Hriston quoted Morrus in post “Who started it?” Initiative order
Sometimes a PC initiates combat and then the DM asks for initiative. That player then argues they should go first. The DM then explains to that player that while their PC does indeed begin taking whatever action they have chosen to initiate combat, the way we find out whether the PC completes its action uninterrupted or the action is interrupted by the action(s) of one or more characters or monsters is by making an opposed Dexterity check called Initiative. Surprise rounds etc. have been (IMO) inelegantly used in these situations over various editions. I agree. Not only is it inelegant to use surprise in such situations, but in 5th Ed. it also requires a tortured reading of the phrase “notice a threat “. I’m toying with a minor house rule — if somebody unexpectedly starts the fight, they don’t roll initiative. What I do is if the enemy isn't expecting it and the other PCs aren't, either, I give that one PC a surprise round. If the enemy is on guard, but isn't ready to draw their weapons in an instant, I will give the PC in question a circumstance bonus to initiative.

From a player's perspective, I'd see that as incentive to start a fight if I thought there was a chance a situation could come to blows. That may be good or bad depending on the type of game you're running.
