Which would make it two or three times better than the previous FF movies, so... win? We would have the point that it is more a family of siblings/peers, rather than strict parent/child, so it can be a little different.

Well, families are still a thing, right? So, the Fantastic Four still works, today. The problem with FF movies has not been that "they don't work". It has been that Fox does not, at its core, understand superheroes, at least of the Marvel variety. They have fundamentally missed what is most important to the superhero properties they touch. For the Fantastic Four, that is about family. ...

Dude. We have only a few rules around here - one of them being that you can't go around blatantly insulting people or questioning their personal character over a difference of opinion about game rules. Or maybe you are trying to be funny? If so... folks can't tell. Either way - you should stick to being respectful.

The big stuff: 1) 20 con, so more hp, on top of more hp! 2) Slightly higher crit modifier 3) +2 more attack, and one extra attack every round. 4) The big one....heals 10 damage every round once at half. That is by far the biggest factor I'm sure. I would also assume that he saves his second wind until much later to milk this advantage. 5) One more action surge.

It means a lot of rerolls and shifting all of the players and monsters, either on cards or in your head. Way more complicated every round as opposed to just "hey your down, remember you lose your next turn no matter what".

To me the two simplest rules to fix this: 1) a penalty when falling unconscious. That way you always take some pain. 2) a person who falls unconscious always loses their next turn, no matter when healed. This means initiative is less relevant. Right now if I drop and the healer goes before my next turn, Iím barely inconvenienced. But if I lose my turn regardless of when Iím healed, itís a...

I don't think there's anything fundamental, here - I'm talking more about categorizing, and setting expectations. I just think about it, and realize there are parts of play where the GM is acting more like a judge/referee, and parts of play where the GM is acting more like an author. The former I'd call adjudication, the latter, not. There's connotations to "adjudication" that I don't think...

Boogeyman: "If I have the mechanics, I don't actually role play - I just use mechanics." FATE, as an example, puts social interaction on the same mechanical footing as physical interaction. In FATE-based games, if you say, "I attack" in physical combat, all you get is a very basic roll of your skill, which in general isn't so high as you'll be able to down anything other than a mook. ...

I am suggesting, as someone said upthread, that the GM has several functions, only one of which is adjudicating. When the GM is just deciding a result, for their own reasons unrelated to the rules of the game - that's not adjudicating. That moment when the GM is *authoring* a result, whatever their inspiration for that - that's not the moment they are adjudicating. I don't buy it. I...

I think this would be a fun little experiment series. 5e's bounded accuracy has made it where high level characters, while strong, are supposed to be toppled by the mob. Numbers mean more than level in 5e. So lets see how well that plays out in practice. In this series, we will take a pretty high level character (11th), and see how well they do against a mob of their lesser (1st level )...

I rather think that depends upon what the focus & intent of the game is. Just this weekend, I played a game which had no combat mechanic. The PCs weren't people addressing their challenges via personally applying physical force, so no system for doing so was included. We didn't miss it. If the intended action in a game is "kill things and take their stuff" then yes, your game needs a combat...

Why do you need rules for one, but not the other? GMs are capable of just saying, "Yes, this social interaction plays out in this manner, with these effects," and do so fairly, but they are somehow incapable of doing so with combat? They can't take a player's description of physical and magical actions, and just run with that like they can social interaction? That, really, is kind of...

One option missed in the OP is "Ineffable: The exact nature of the gods is not known, or undetermined. Divine magic happens, but nobody has proof of why or how." This is how most of my games run - unless or until the actual nature of divine magic impact play (so, it becomes mechanically- or plot-relevant), then I don't bother to specify. You say that as if humans *have* an identifiable "natural state" - we are a tribal, social species and an extremely extended infant period compared to other animals. We, more than any other creature on the planet, are focused on *learned* behavior, not inborn, "natural" behavior. What is natural for us is to try out a large number of different behaviors, and see what works. I will push back...

The game's rules are certainly largely about combat. The *could* have rules that were as rich for dealing with social/political action, or other activity, but they don't. If we hand players a hammer, we should expect them to treat problems like nails... There are games that do better. The CORTEX+ based Leverage game, for example, does include combat. But that is only one out of five major...

Maybe Morrus will allow you to put an announcement on the front page. Most people like me go from the first page to the play-by-post forums and could miss it. Couldn't hurt. How would someone go about doing that, Morrus?

  • 12:41 PM - Ghal Maraz mentioned Morrus in post Taking Nominees for Most Anticipated RPG of 2018
Morrus: Paladin: Warriors of Charlemagne, is not out yet, not even for the backers, as far as I can tell. Delta Green has the Handler's Guide out in PDF. City of Mist has the Starter Set out in both psysical and PDF form and the Core Rulebook out in PDF. Correct about World of Lazarus being a setting for Modern AGE. Sentinel Comics RPG has only the starter set out. The rulebook is due out in 2018. Don't know if it counts. Regarding the Flash Gordon RPG for Savage Worlds: it's not a fully-independent game, but it needs the Savage Worlds rules which aren't included in neither of the books, so it shouldn't count for the purpose of this poll (unless for some reason this rule doesn't apply to SW products... in fact, Savage Rifts made the top of the poll two years ago and it wasn't an independent ruleset too).

  • 12:47 PM - DEFCON 1 mentioned Morrus in post Nathan Stewart Promises WotC will do something with new settings in 2018
And the whole point of going OGL was so that other companies could put out new campaign settings so that they didn't have to. Morrus even has a thread on the boards here that lists all the various campaign settings that have already been made for 5E. If you can't find something there you're looking for... then it's pretty much guaranteed that your desire and want is so narrow that WotC sure isn't going to scratch your itch, even if they *do* eventually produce a completely new setting at some point. That's just simply odds.

  • 06:28 PM - Matrix Sorcica mentioned Morrus in post Paizo New Roundup With Extra Ultimate Wilderness
They've all been like this. They are like press releases, but Fan made, and for fans of the system. It is news about what is available - not a review or critique. Sorta like cheer leading. I don't personally play Pathfinder, or own any Paizo products (not quite true I did buy a PDF of one of the bestiarys - I just can't help myself), but I find myself reading these news updates anyway. Ah, makes a lot more sense. So I was obviously too fast on the trigger. Thanks for clarifying. Morrus: see, not so hard.

  • 03:18 PM - lowkey13 mentioned Morrus in post What do you specifically want out of reviewers?
I think that Morrus in his last post listed some good reasons people read reviews. But as he alluded to in his comment regarding technical devices, people also read reviews differently depending on the type of thing being reviewed as well as the source of the review. For example, I enjoy reading literary and film criticism (reviews) in some sources even of books or movies I will never watch, because those can be an art form in and of themselves. I read it not for the interest in the subject, necessarily (although that might come) but for the skills of the writer/reviewer/critic. Another type of review is one that focuses on "technical" merit. This is best when looking at consumer products, technical products, automobiles, etc. How much memory does it have? How much horsepower? Does it get the same gas mileage as advertised? What is the fit & finish of the reviewed product? And so on. As a general rule, however, I have reached the age when I look for reviews/criticism in the following circumstanc...

  • 01:28 AM - RangerWickett mentioned Morrus in post Sell Me On WotBS / Zeitgeist
...the adventure that literally involves the PCs on a train. So, well, that's my horn. Toot toot. If you want to get a fuller sense of the campaign, there are a lot of GMs who post on the E.N. Publishing forum about their campaigns. To MoutonRustique's comment, I still did all the conversions to 4e on the adventures that were written for Pathfinder. I love that 4e lets you pace fights well and create all sorts of brief threats that need to be dealt with, as opposed to 3e/PF's style of "did you save? you're totally fine with no narrative effect at all. did you fail? you may as well take a nap." (I wish 4e had not had the odd math where everything scaled so obviously for the good guys and bad guys, and I wish there hadn't been so many niche powers, feats, and magic items that clogged up the character builder. But you could run the game with just the physical books and you wouldn't be overwhelmed with options.) The best suggestion I got for ZEITGEIST encounter design came from Morrus, who insisted every power of every enemy have a short sensory description. That led to me, later in the campaign, using that description section to work in dialogue that enemies might say during the fight, to give the fights more personality. I found that often when I converted a monster from PF to 4e, I'd add some more tricks or narrative beats to its attacks, and then go back and add those to the PF version too so the Pathfinder players wouldn't miss out. Like in adventure 5, one encounter has some gremlins, which in PF just make you roll twice and take the worse result. In the 4e version, I instead tweaked the mechanic so they specifically messed with guns - if you tried to shoot at them, the gun would click but not fire, but if you stayed still and kept aiming until the start of your next turn, it would fire then. If you moved before then, the gun would go off as soon as it wasn't aligned with the gremlin. I put that same schtick into the PF version, even though it sort of goes ...

  • 12:24 AM - Tony Vargas mentioned Morrus in post Toward a Theory of 6th Edition
... to how every Warlock receives a Book of Shadows/Pact Weapon/Improved familiar at 3rd level. Not at a point where it would be most logical given their their relationship with their patron, but at level 3. The Rogue deals extra damage when they catch the enemy unawares or flank them to a degree no other class can. These characters are not functioning in accordance with the law that every Fighter gets followers. that every Warlock gets a pact gift, or Rogues are unique in getting a bonus to damage from an ambush regardless of how much sense it does or doesn't make. The They represent any number of events, tropes, including fate, luck, and plot contrivances that would result in the desired effect. Basically, it's a mechanic that can actually impact part of the game's narrative. They haven't been especially common in D&D as compared to many other RPGs, but they've pretty much always been there in one form or another. Hit points & saving throws are another example, and, as Morrus points out, the debates those spawned go way back (though with the reverse of the emphasis you typically get, today), not just to the early days of these forums and to UseNet and BBSs and Out on a Limb, but, apparently, to people just harassing EGG about it enough that he wrote a whole treatise on the topic of hps in the 1e DMG. ;)

I'm not entirely sure I liked the 3rd ep. Some good, bad and very bad. The Good: Yup, I agree with Morrus, this show is freaking GORGEOUS. And, it's probably the hardest SF version of Trek to date. I kinda like that they're giving it a more hard SF look. Yup, the sets are too damn dark. Grr. Hopefully that will shift later on. Michael is a badass. I do love the scene where she kicks the crap out of the convicts. Although, that being said, she's appearing to be a LOT more emotional and a lot less Vulcan in this episode. Guess it makes sense. Just a big shift in how I saw the character. The interplay between Saru and Michael. That's a great dynamic. You can tell Saru truly respects Michael but, also doesn't trust her and blames her for the death of the Captain. I realy look forward to seeing how this plays out. "Did he just shush us?" is probably the best line I've heard in a long, long time. The Bad: Ok, why did we have the prison transport scene? Three throwaway characters for Michael to put the slippers to? Curly Haired Barklay - come on. Massive alle...

For creative works? Thatís a whole other debate! I'm not sure that's really the case, though. On one hand, yes - the writers are creating something. A vision of how the game should work. But Catalyst, the publisher, ultimately needs to sell product. If a shift to less crunch means more sales, that's what they'll do. Those who enjoy the current edition will continue to play what they own already. Just as happened with D&D/Pathfinder as it rolled from 3 -> 4 -> 5.

Huh. Lots of people have brown, green, or blue eyes. My eyes are blue. Maybe she meant me? Maybe it happened so that all the people Arya killed so far didn't have blue eyes? Seems questionable, but I won't sift through the episodes to figure it out ;)
  • 06:04 AM - RangerWickett quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 3
Well yeah. Thatís the fundamental problem with the trope. Itís never been satisfying. It can kinda work if you have a villain who uses magic to mind control an army or something, and killing him frees the people.

  • 11:25 PM - pukunui quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 3
Good points, everyone! It reminds me of all those times where the PCs take out the BBEG more quickly and easily than the DM expected them too. That can feel anticlimactic too. Letís just hope the last three episodes top this one! For one thing, now that Branís no longer in immediate danger, Iíd like to see him actually do something useful with his powers again! I kind of feel like Jaime, Tyrion, and Cersei need their own showdown. That family dynamic needs a payoff.Yeah, fair enough! So what do you think will happen with Bronn? Heh. Maybe Arya will change her face, come Cersei, and rule Westeros!Maybe!
  • 09:09 PM - Mercurius quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 3
It's a well-known trope. Also see Independence Day, The Phantom Menace, The Last Starfighter, Army of Darkness, and a hundred more! I realize that. It doesn't make it less silly, and of course it is important how it is implemented. Defeating the Night King just seemed too...easy. Such build-up and then, voila, done - and his entire army with him. Winter is no longer coming in one sneaky move by Arya.
  • 02:02 PM - Maxperson quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 3
Dothraki don't do tactics. They rush and overwhelm the enemy - it's all they know. This is the first enemy that has ever not worked against. Pretty sure they don't do it at night, though. They know better than that. And they would have realized that snow and ice are even more slippery.
  • 10:41 AM - Mercurius quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 3
One thing I didnít get ó what did the brown eyes, green eyes, blue eyes thing mean? I think she was emphasizing blue eyes, that Arya had already killed people with brown and green eyes, but blue was still to come - meaning, wights, White Walkers, and the Night King. It was foreshadowing that Arya would kill the Night King.
  • 10:32 AM - pukunui quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 3
Mixed feelings for me, too. I enjoyed the spectacle overall but am also feeling let down. The White Walkers and their existential threat was my favourite part of the show. This was not the ending I was expecting. All I can hope for is that the supposed prequel series will flesh out their (back)story more. Random thoughts: Sam, Brienne, Pod, Jaime, and probably also Grey Worm and Tormund ought to be dead. Aside from being Westerosí living memory, what is the point of Bran having magic powers? He doesnít ever seem to do anything useful with them any more. Was his ďcreationĒ of Hodor the only pay-off weíll get for his apparent ability to affect the past, or will there be more? Why didnít he warg into Ghost or something to help with the fight? The dead Starks in the crypt *did* rise but no one of any consequence even had to fight one, let alone get hurt or killed by one. Also, despite this theory being correct, Danyís reference to the dead already being there *was* just her stating the o...
  • 01:49 AM - Olgar Shiverstone quoted Morrus in post GAME OF THRONES SEASON 8--Final Run-- Part 3
The visuals were absolutely phenomenal. Especially some of the dragon shots above the clouds, the dragon fight, the dragonfire. I heard some had trouble seeing what was going on because it was too dark, but I didnít have any trouble. Well, my darkvision failed, so I had a hard time following what was going on even with all the lights turned off. My wife kept asking me "Who is that?" as scenes would shift. I really could not follow the dragon fights. Take a lesson from D&D please and color-code them.

  • 11:43 PM - Nagol quoted Morrus in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
I didnít realise the Kaylons were such scaredy cats! It makes sense for their characters though. They've been hiding out in their home system for how long? They only came out when they thought they had a insurmountable advantage... and were stopped cold despite their intellectual superiority, preparedness, and thoroughly vetted plan. I was a bit disappointed when the Kaylons were revealed as Determined Exterminators, I was hoping for some nuance.

  • 05:13 PM - Dannyalcatraz quoted Morrus in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
So just send one ship first. Or even just a probe. Ship or probe goes in. Gets blown up. Kaylon receive no data on what happened because the action is on the other side of the event horizon. Only if the ship or probe returns, do they get data- prey destroyed or disappeared.
  • 04:25 PM - Dannyalcatraz quoted Morrus in post The Orville Season Two - Thoughts?
If they could hide in the black hole safely, why couldnít the Kaylons come in to take a look? They hid behind a curtain and the Kaylons spent two days peering at the curtain but treating it as an impassable barrier. Obviously they knew they were in there. Did the good guys have technology that the Kaylons didnít? I think the Kaylon didnít want to waltz into an ambush. They couldnít see beyond the event horizon, so going in on their preyís tail would have set them up for taking weapon fire right where it hurt. Besides the bad physics, though, I wonder why- when they had perfect camouflage- they didnít simply emerge from the event horizon at a different point from where they entered. THEY wasted 2 days watching Kaylons.

This branding stuff is getting scary. Well, it's always been like this. As soon as something doesn't have that WotC sticker on it, folks just push it to one side, regardless of how good it is. But, you're right, it is scary.
  • 04:21 PM - DMMike quoted Morrus in post There's An Official ALIEN RPG Coming!
ďThe Alien saga isnít about superheroes with superior firepower,Ē says game director Hšrenstam. ďItís about placing ordinary people in extraordinary circumstances, and testing the endurance of the human spirit against inhuman atrocities and impossible odds . . . Emulating the dramatic arc of an Alien film, these survival challenges promise escalating stakes and fast (often brutal) gameplay where most players arenít expected to last the night. Their first cinematic scenario, Chariot of the Gods written by sci-fi novelist Andrew E.C. Gaska (Death of the Planet of the Apes), is included in the core manual. More cinematic modules and game expansions are already in production, with direct tie-ins to Foxís future plans for the franchise slated for 2020 and beyond. Impossible odds? That's when D&D players throw up their hands and say "well why don't you just kill my character then?" I've seen it happen. Heck, I've probably done it. So I'm expecting the game to take a step back from role-play...
