I'd say "official" is nothing, but "default" is Forgotten Realms, if I were to distinguish between the two terms.

Yeah. They used to get around that with the "fixed point in time" technobabble but they don't do that any more. But all of it's the past for the Doctor, so every alien stopped is altering history.

They're definitely doing the "teaching history" part of Doctor Who, aren't they? I agree that the Doctor was just a bystander in this episode. All they did is witness events.

By "before" you mean in a different system. I guess if you value your gut reaction over actual play experience, there's not really much to debate, is there? You're right - you the way you feel about this game you haven't played yet is how you feel. :)

99% of the time the damage type won't matter, so you can deduct the SOAK from the total. The STR bonus applies to his base damage, not to the exploit, so it goes to the bunt damage should that info be needed. The times it will matter are if the target has SOAK to only blunt or only fire, in which case it could only reduce those portions of the total.

Because it occurs to me, as an ironically curious consequence of that, that if WotCís goal was hypothetically to sell books to you specifically, opening the DMsG has therefore lost them sales rather than gained them.

Generally speaking, SOAK (and immunities etc.) have to apply to all damage types. The non-SOAKing of armour is slightly awkwardly phrased, though, I'll admit! Basically, if you have *been* poisoned (gas, food, atmosphere, etc.), armour isn't going to help you. If the poison is on a weapon, then sure, armor will help. It's all about the delivery system.

I make that 14 DEFENSE. 3d6 is 11. 4d6 is 14. SOAK and DEFENCE are two different things. DEFENCE is how hard it is to hit you. SOAK is how much damage your armour lets you ignore.

The careers youíve taken show exactly what your Judge has done every year of their life. No secret tours! If you want a Judge with a few years working under their belt, youíd have to make a higher grade character and give them one or two grades in some of the Judge careers. You can totally start a campaign at grade 6 or 7 if you want to start with experienced judges.

The DEFENSE scores actually were opposed checks at one point in the playtest process. They got changed to static average rolls because opposed checks slowed down combat too much. Instead, the system kinda does the same thing with the critical system (i.e. if you roll three sixes you get an extra effect). Swapping out damage dice for attack dice already benefits the more accurate combatant, but...

I always think helmets! deserve an exclamation mark! :) Not every object does extra stuff at higher quality levels. A high quality compass still just points north, for example. But it will be a more valuable object. And if a check using the object is required (admittedly that's harder to imagine with a helmet than, say, a lockpick) then the equipment quality bonus applies to the dice pool.

Okay, everybody, Judge #3, Plane Sailing, seems to have disappeared off of the face of the (EN)world, so phoamslinger has agreed to step in as an alternate judge. His IRON DM envolvement in years past was primarily at the Rat Bastard DMs' Club and, I think, Nutkinland (but no records survive, and my memory is fuzzy). Sorry for the unintentional bait-and-switch, but the format will not change.

Still waiting for that cite. ;) I experienced Plane Sailing 's perspective also, but it is probably anecdotal evidence at best. We have been planing on making the "word" spells bonus actions, and keeping the only spell per turn standard.

I think the admins are professional enough that, if they didn't make a specific statement, you wouldn't know what games they liked or didn't like.As best I recall, Plane Sailing's favourite fantasy RPG is Runequest. An excellent game!, though not my personal favourite.

  • 04:51 PM - Charles Rampant quoted Plane Sailing in post CR 13 dragon beaten by level 7 party observations
In that case, even without room to fly I would have thought that the White Dragon could have spent a lot of time out of melee range of the PCs... maybe it was forgotten? In combats with Dragons I've run, the question quickly becomes 'do I retreat and take OAs, or stick around and take full turns?' Flying around and avoiding damage seems all good and well, but the moment the Paladin gets into melee (which, to be honest, he should do eventually - it'd be boring for the player otherwise!) the D&D rules really make it tough for the Dragon to leave without just soaking 'free' damage. Combine that with parties who can easily dodge Red Dragon breath weapons (Rogue + Monks representing) and the Paladin giving everyone a reason to stick together, it becomes hard to see what the Dragon does to actually do damage without getting into a melee fight that it will inevitably lose very quickly. I would suggest that giving the Dragon the Fly By trait that Perytons have can work to avoid this whole problem, but I ...

  • 12:41 PM - Barolo quoted Plane Sailing in post Boots of Striding and Springing.......kinda lame
I'm a little sad that they changed it from the traditional "30ft speed tirelessly for 12 hours" (striding) and "can jump 30ft forward, 15ft straight up or 9ft back" (springing) and adds +1 to AC. (1e DMG) Those were the days, eh? Well, I think we could add a new version with this nice list of abilities. But maybe we should call it "boots of striding, springing and evading"?

in what way do you think this is a relevant contribution to the topic? Clue: it isn't. You are trying to shut down another commenter with that statement, and we don't appreciate that. Please don't do that. in what way do you think your personal judgment is relevant contribution to the topic? Clue: it isn't. ppaladin123 was posting a valid reply to the previous comment of Michael Morris; WICH HAD NOTHING TO TO WITH THE TOPIC and was in fact shutting down conversation. ppaladin123 made it a point that his opinion was not a WOTC rule.

  • 04:07 PM - jimmifett quoted Plane Sailing in post DriveThruRPG Hacked
Sadly too many companies focus on silliness like upper and lower case, including numbers and special characters but don't allow the one thing that makes a really significant differnce which is length, length and length. You are absolutely correct that a longer password is better, however, even with a pw as short as 8, having mixed case characters raises the possible unique combinations a-z: ~1.5 million possibilities a-zA-Z: ~750 million possibilities a-zA-Z0-9: ~3.3 billion possibilities a-zA-Z0-9 and 10 special characters: ~12 billion possibilities Certainly not silly for even a basic attempt at added difficulty, but yes, a decent system could chew through 12 billion matches in a relatively short time, even less if distributed. Naturally, longer is *significantly* better, with 16 chars: a-z: ~5 million possibilities a-zA-Z: ~10 trillion possibilities a-zA-Z0-9: ~273 trillion possibilities a-zA-Z0-9 and 10 special characters: ~4.1 quadrillion possibilities Now we're talkin...

  • 01:50 AM - Cristiano Marcelino quoted Plane Sailing in post My Ranger fix
It might be worth outlining why you think these are necessary 'fixes' for the Ranger class if you would like to invite discussion of your ideas. At the moment it isn't clear what you don't like about it, and hence how these are useful or interesting to you. How about it? A survey on the official website gave the worst grades to Favorite Enemy and Beast Master, and the Wizards promised improvements for the class. Those above are my suggestions. I believe that improvements will come in September with Rage of Demons, Drizzt campaign.
