Well, I will take credit/blame for delays on conversions. I just have less free time than I used to, say 8 years ago. I like the spells for the domain. And the granted power, though maybe we should specify "(2 new bonus skill points with each new cleric level)." At this point, I could possibly forgo additional magic items --- we were thinking about items that create juggernauts out of...

Just to highlight this, we're not actually seeing the event horizon. The event horizon is where light stops being able to escape the black hole if it's beamed straight away from the center, but where shining material can actually orbit the black hole and not just fall in quickly is considerably farther out. Plus there is redshifting near the horizon that makes light sources there appear much...

I think he already played as an admiral before? The 4 admirals they had in this episode had all shown up before if so. Though Ron Canada as a Moclan would have been funny in its own subtle meta way, since he was the testosterone poisoned captain in Babylon 5, and Moclans are Testosterone Poisoning: the Species. :D

I called it last time: Yeah, I'd better spoiler block again. I figured there'd be more problems, the only visit to Moclus that wasn't problematic so far was Bortus taking his yearly piss. Some of the twists were pretty predictable, but I think it went well overall. Bonus points to them bringing back the Moclan female from the first season as the leader. And Ed made a good point about...

I will agree with all of that. How does the 3.X version of the wu jen cast? Is it more like the wizard or sorcerer? Sorc casting might be helpful. If we need to, we can change around or add some spells or SLAs or even some special ability to the "rattle."

Maybe it's just their own breath weapons critters are immune to. For the 1st-level spells, shouldn't the domain spells just work for her cleric spell slots? We didn't give her the ability to cast them as sorcerer spells, and there seems no need to since she has cleric casting anyway also. We can still do protection from good and true strike. Then maybe shield instead of entropic shield. That...

Yup, that's what they ran, but at least it's a quality set of episodes. Don't know why FOX is pulling out the reruns here, unless they don't want to compete with March Madness or something.

Let's have them use flies with valgoss symbionts, I think. That's slightly more flavorful. Iron Will is fine for the human feat. Let's just go with Mounted Archery for the second class feat. It fits with Mounted Combat, at least. Let's give them javelins and the chitin shield as you suggest.

Pretty good episode tonight. Nice balance of drama and humor. Tuvok! Gordon channeled a bit of Barclay here. I thought Greg seemed a lot like him, which is probably why he hit it off with Laura. They should have given a copy of that simulation to ite museum or wherever they were dropping off the artifacts. And the B plot was Seth cutting loose again. Our Moclans do something crazy...

...o braziers. Now, I'm of the opinion/head canon that the 1E PHB cover depicts the efreeti from the cover of the 1E DMG, but in this case, I'd like it to be a Castle Greyhawk-style Great Stone Face-style idol that does spooky mysterious stuff, via its connection to the evil figure it depicts. The question, though, is who it ought to be. As someone who started playing with 1E and BD&D in 1979, I'm inclined to make it a named demon lord or second-tier devil, but I'm not sure who it ought to be. So, who fits the profile of a fat naked humanoid, with perhaps a wider-than-natural face and mouth, gem eyes and is the kind of figure who'd be worshiped by evil dungeon dwellers? Bonus if he's a figure connected to forbidden knowledge or twisting desires back around on those who make wishes. For perhaps obvious, and I hope not offensively, I'd like the figure to embody a kind of anti-Buddhist view, embracing materialism, selfishness and an obsession with surface appearances. Muchas gracias. BOZ Is there a demon lord or devil prince that fits this description?

  • 07:56 PM - freyar mentioned BOZ in post Question on Creature Catalog and OGL
Well, I think the answer is a bit complicated. The stuff that made it into the ToH are definitely OGC. I think (hope?!) that the rest is actually also covered by the separate agreement Scott Greene made for the CC (my understanding is that the CC and ToH were covered by separate but similar/identical agreements). In that case it would be OGC as well, though the CC hasn't updated its OGL in ages and ages. But I've never been able to get a copy of the agreement from Scott or really start a conversation with him about it. It's possible BOZ would know, though he started working on conversions here a bit after the ToH stuff as well, and I don't recall that he knew much last time I asked him about it. Worth trying, though. BOZ, you have any ideas?

Only I suspect that Echohawk would rather not get sued by Wizards for copyright infringement. ;) Fiddlesticks! A responsive, proactive WotC, who placed the love of the game above legalism, would seek Echohawk out, and *ask him* to write the f-ing book for them. Hey Mearls, let's have a Hasbro-sponsored Kickstarter for Echohawk, to do this research for each and every monster in the whole D&D Multiverse. This stuff is so good, Echohawk ought to be paid full time to write this.

These should one day be bound and sold I second that. Only I suspect that Echohawk would rather not get sued by Wizards for copyright infringement. ;) The images are probably a stumbling block for a print collection of these articles. I don't think the text would infringe anyone's copyrights, but there is a difference between including low resolution images as part of a message board post and including those images in a printed product. Thus far, WotC has kindly overlooked my inclusion of pictures in these posts. (Thank you, if anyone from WotC is reading.) I would not expect the same kindness were I to try to profit from their IP in some way. For me, a big part of this series is seeing how the depictions of each creature have changed over the years, so a version without the pictures wouldn't be quite the same.

  • 08:55 AM - aramis erak quoted BOZ in post Ken Whitman
Not very useful. One thing that maybe someone will have access to, though: The 2014 edition of Designers & Dragons notes that in Pyramid #25 (May/June 1997), there was an article about Traveller by Timothy Brown called “The Classic Science-Fiction Roleplaying Game Returns” that does mention Whitman. I imagine it talks about him more than just the one quote that was in the book; if anyone has access to that article, could you help me out finding out what it says? I don't know the article, but I do know the most probable reasons for the mention. Traveller 4, aka "Marc Miller's Traveller"... Courtney Solomon wanted to get rights to Traveller in order to make a movie based upon it. Ken worked for/with Courtney on several projects (which can be confirmed from his IMDB profile). Courtney fronted Ken the money for Imperium Games, which published T4, and Ken was the day-to-day head. The controversy then is that several authors claimed quite publicly that Ken didn't pay them. Hmm, I added that a while back. I hope I wasn't just assuming that Gygax wrote it. Coming back to the credit for the barghest, I found a response to a letter in Dragon #30 which confirms that Gary Gygax was indeed the creator.

Did Gygax not write the column in Dragon #26? The wikipedia entry thinks so, but the article is uncredited in the magazine, and I couldn't find anything to support an assumption that Gary wrote it. Both RPG.net and RPG Geek have that article listed without a credit. So: Maybe, but [citation needed] :D

  • 08:44 AM - Echohawk quoted BOZ in post Monster ENCyclopedia: Aarakocra
Very well done! I think I see everything from their Wikipedia article, but a lot more details. :) Oh wow. I somehow managed to completely fail to look at the Wikipedia entry when researching this. I checked the Greyhawk wiki, the Forgotten Realms wiki and the Dragonlance Nexus, but not Wikipedia itself. That would have probably saved me a fair amount of time! Still, it's good to know that I didn't miss anything obvious -- that Wikipedia article is really pretty comprehensive in its own right! When I wrote DRAGONS OF WINTER for Sovereign Press' 3.5 Dragonlance line, I replaced the aarakocra in Southern Ergoth with kyrie, but paid homage to the original monster by having them belong to the Aara-Kocra clan of kyrie. We didn't really have any aarakocra stats at the time, and since we'd already devoted a lot of space to kyrie in the Bestiary of Krynn and in various sourcebooks it made sense just to use them instead. Thanks Cam, that's a great anecdote. I'm going to update the text for t...

  • 06:47 PM - Grazzt quoted BOZ in post Question on Creature Catalog and OGL
Hey, sorry for the slow response! I can't get on ENWorld at work, and often forget when I'm at home. I have a pretty limited understanding compared to Scott Greene, but I don't believe the licensing of the actual CC site has much to do with the licensing on the Tome of Horrors - pretty sure those were separate deals. As for what on the CC is OGL, I have to confess ignorance - possibly none of it is, but you would have to double check with Scott (who goes by Graz'zt on ENWorld). Thread necro... Yep. Agreements were completely separate. The stuff in Tome is 100% OGC and can be freely used so long as the section 15 format is followed that Clark did (examples are in the appendices of all the Tome books I believe). The stuff on the CC website isn't OGC. It was basically an agreement with WotC to post the monsters (including fluff text as-is from the original source)...more or less. Stuff on CC is not OGC however. Key part is on the OGL page for the CC: "Material names added here at t...

Wow, this is some pretty good thread necromancy. ;) Its a good thread. I have been thinking about using the wild hunt in my game. The problem is that I run a E6 game, so the encounter would be overwhelming any way it was handled. While I like the idea of it being something no single individual could overcome, I would like to pitch it at a level where a high level (6th level in E6) party of 4-6, probably with assistance may, at great personal risk hold off the hunt. I am thinking along the lines of 8th or 9th level for the Huntsman, and maybe keeping the hounds as is, but reducing the number to 12. The thing I like about this as an encounter is that, even if the party prevails one night, the next night the Hunt will be back. This, I think, makes it even more terrifying. thotd

  • 05:32 AM - doghead quoted BOZ in post The Wild Hunt
The Master of the Wild Hunt is a mysterious figure who appears when great evil threatens the land. The Hunt travels towards its prey, and should they miss the prey they travel on for another 10 miles in a random direction, hunting any creature they come across. This kind of threw me. The Wild Hunt appears whenever evil threatens the land, but if they miss their intended prey, then they happily run down and slaughter any old person. That seems like a rather evil thing to do. Charm Monster (Su): When the Hunt passes within 30 feet of a creature, that creature must succeed on a DC 20 Will save or become swept up in the Hunt. Creatures affected take one of two roles; the hunter or the hunted. The save DC is Charisma-based. For each mile traveled with the Hunt, a charmed creature must succeed at another DC 20 Will save. A failed roll indicates the creature has now become the hunted (and the charm is broken). On a successful save the charm is broken and the creature is free to lea...

(snip) Control winds – will probably save this for combat. (snip) I'm eagerly awaiting that particular update. I'm vicariously living lost 3.5E opportunities through you now.... ;) (snip) Also learned some other important info. Apparently I badly misremembered the size of the raider camp – they are actually a much smaller army than I original presented on the first page of this thread. ;) Their numbers are actually less than 2000 total! The first wave, the tribute gatherers, should consist of about 200 orcs and several giants, and will likely be led by a few humans. So, nowhere near the overwhelming odds I originally thought they were. :) It still sounds like it's going to be an epic session. Anyway, I'm subscribed to this thread so I'm just waiting for the next update.... ;)

  • 09:55 AM - Blackbrrd quoted BOZ in post Need hundreds of feathers to make arrows
I'm playing a 15th-level druid as part of a party in a 3.5 campaign. I have been tasked with obtaining hundreds – if not thousands – of bird feathers so that a small town can mass produce arrows to defend against a small army. Assuming that it would be difficult to purchase the necessary quantities, and that I have a little over two weeks to obtain as many feathers as I can, what possible methods could I use? I was born a gnome, but was recently reincarnated as a pixie. Also in the party are a wizard, bard, paladin, rogue, and cleric. Now, why would you need arrows against that small army? Can't the party just fly over to it and bombard it with Ewards Black tentacles, fireball, lightning bolt, flame strike, blade barrier and so on? Should wipe out any small army untrained townies can defend against.

First of all, I just want to say that I didn't come here looking for a way to get around obtaining the feathers, nor I am looking for input on how unfair my DM may be for requesting that I perform a supposedly mundane task that should be beneath me, or anything other than "how can I get this done". So I will not be responding any further to any such non-productive comments, and I want to say thank you to those who have tried to help me with my original question. My apologies for my part in that. I run 4E and never got a chance to see control winds in action in 3.5E. I was hoping to vicariously see it in action through your report of your game.... ;)

RUMBLETiGER, you are linking to spells in the Pathfinder SRD; do you know if the non-PHB spells are in D&D 3.5 books, and if so what books? Oops, I was responding to a Pathfinder thread right before yours, forgot to switch over. Some of the spells don't translate, I apologize. However, all I did was scroll down thru the Druid spell list & pick out ones that modified terrain, and then ones that could be useful in battle. 3.5 has plenty of both. If you'd like I could present an alternate list of suggestions. Here and Here would be the 3.5 lists.
  • 12:37 PM - MarkB quoted BOZ in post Need hundreds of feathers to make arrows
Maybe "moderate-sized" was better than small, but regardless, we still have to deal with them. I'm not going to tell these people how to defend their town, and if they don't have the resources to buy what they need, but if I can do it without much hassle, then I might as well. I am also going to help the fletcher by fashioning arrowheads and shafts using wood shape and then ironwood on the arrowheads. The other party members are helping out by training the townsfolk into militia, and/or casting spells and providing other support, so why shouldn't I do my part? Hmm, you might be able to finagle Wood Shape and Ironwood into letting you make multiple arrows per casting by creating them all as one item and then trimming off the sprues, but it's still slow going. As a 15th-level caster, you have so many more useful options. For instance: Using Stone Shape, Soften Earth and Stone, Transmute Mud To Rock / Rock To Mud, Move Earth, Wall of Stone, Plant Growth and similar spells to creat...
