Yep; one of the posters here, CrimsonFlameWielder, until recently played a foxy Hengeyokai monk character called Gray. dream66_, In general, unless you find it explicitly forbidden in the rules, everything is legal 1 month after the source is published.

D'raven steps forward, chains whirling defensively as he absorbs Scott's pain. The rejuvenated armoured-man smiles and rushes in to attack the pyro, but his timing couldn't be worse. He zooms in just as Raivon's whip is about to connect, and the whip wraps around his armoured wrist, yanking free of her grasp. Awaiting Wrahn Voda Vosa dream66_ to finish round. Raivon misses, and Scott's attack is a crit miss, so Scott accidentally disarms Raivon.

  • 11:43 PM - Tony Vargas quoted dream66_ in post Who's still playing 4E
For my part, the biggest best assets of 4e are Tactical Mini's combat, the AEDU system, and non-magical healing. 13th Age talks about how it's built off of 4e, and seems to hate all of those. To be fair, 13A doesn't talk up being a continuation of 4e, just that one of it's two design partners was the guy behind 4e, it also draws heavily from 3e, and from Classic D&D, much like 5e did. 5e does go farther in the direction of "narrative" or story-telling style than 4e did. Characters get a lot of 'ribbons,' like "One Unique Thing," choice of weapon & armor, and re-skinning and whatnot, that do contribute to defining the character, but have little or no mechanical impact. Tactical combat is not absent, it's just more abstract, as a result of the game actually being designed for TotM (unlike 5e which just tells you to use TotM). But it does abandon some of the best things 4e did. The common class structure is gone in favor of resource-varied classes with balance imposed by arbitrary da...
  • 10:53 PM - Tony Vargas quoted dream66_ in post New D&D Monthly Survey: Mystics & Psionics
That's true if you look at 3rd edition and maybe 4th. That's not true if you look at older history of psionics, it used to be more than just a different kind of caster.3e & 4e psionics were not just 'different sorts of casters,' 4e psions didn't cast spells and shared exactly 0 powers with classes that did. Now, that's a little facile, because only arcanists cast spells, and virtually no classes shared even a single power. But still, they weren't casters in the 5e sense, at all. OTOH, a number of 1e disciplines and science were mechanically similar to and/or referenced actual spells. But, yes, overall, there's a lot more tradition behind psionics not being just another form of casting the same spells lifted from the same long list at the back of the PH, even though, inevitably, there will be some specific mechanics that will be present in both some psionic ability and some spell, somewhere.

Sorry, hate wasn't fair, it was a emotional reaction to what I saw, I don't want to take this too far off topic, but I admit to having a very emotional reaction to 13th age, nothing about it looks like 4e, but looks like it would be familiar to a 3.x player and that bothered me because they have pathfinder they don't need 13th age, we needed it. I actually think it's sort of a clever layout/formatting trick to be honest. 4e-like rules written in a 3e-like style. I've always felt that some of the backlash tossed at 4e ultimately came down to presentation, which highlighted aspects of the game in ways that weren't quite as clear in prior editions. So 13thAge, for example, basically gives you A/E/D mechanics but just writes them up in a different way. Incidentally, my initial reaction was similar to yours. I saw it and went "meh this is just a spin on 3e". It took me a deeper read through to realize I was incorrect. How does the GSL being terrible - which it is - harm your game? Or ...

I agree some of those things look different but are still there in a certain manner. I believe my only gripe with 13A is that the classes needed a bit more work. 13 True Ways really starts to show how flexible the system can be. Actually, I do agree about the classes. (snip) One of my DW co-players can never keep down character sheet details--even with the 'single page' nature of DW character sheets, it took a good 6 months to make sure the player remembered how the Thief's sneak attack works, to say nothing of the variety of level-up moves the character has gained. I can deeply appreciate why the "casual" or "no memory for this sort of thing" player would blanch at seeing a 4e character of anything beyond 3rd or 4th level--that many discrete elements with specific hooks to them would be awful. (snip) I ended up making cheat sheets at late-Heroic onwards covering all the triggered powers the PCs had. I also experimented a few times with preparing their character sheets in the sam...

How does 13th Age hate those things? It has tactical combat which doesn't require minis but can work just as well if you use them. It has its own version of AEDU. It has non-magical healing. I'm not seeing the hate. I'm not even seeing mild dislike.

I totally agree with everything you said here. 5e was a letdown, but strangely 13th Age was the bigger letdown. I guess the way it was talked about I got some idea in my head that it was gonna be to 4e what Pathfinder is to 3.x, But hell 13th Age looks closer to Pathfinder than it does to 4e. I'm not saying it's a bad game, but come on the 3.x grognards got Pathfinder, where's our 3rd party carrying on? Yeah, I must admit, I didn't find 13a to be that much to my liking, crunch-wise. They did execute on the 'fantasy super heroes' concept, I just wasn't that excited by HOW they did it, overall.

I think the combination of the restrictive GSL and the simple fact that most D&D fans hate 4E with a passion exceeding the heat of a thousand suns means that there will be no Pathfinder-like revival of 4E. Try and find a 4E fan community: they really don't exist. (There are a couple of forums but there's no passionate community.) 4E fans seem to be the smallest niche in a niche hobby. Personally, though, I'm not looking for further support. I've got offline versions of the electronic tools for when my DDi subscription loses its value and I have enough material to keep runni...

But the big problem here is, then why do we have things that Divine can do but not Arcane (healing). If bards are arcane, then clearly arcane magic can do healing, both with their native spell list and with Magical Secrets. Even if you think bards are something separate and different, arcane magic can still do healing, it's just different and more expensive: Vampiric Touch on a regenerating source (like a psionicist!), or Clone you into a new, younger, undamaged body, or Wish to Regenerate.

What I don't understand about shutting down Pathguy.com is WHY NOW! He's had a deal with TSR to make character generators since before WOTC bought TSR!!! He's been doing this since 2nd edition (they were downloadable commandline dos programs.) He made them for 2nd edition and alternity, he made them for 3.0, 3.5, 4e, and now 5? So why change now he had permission back in the TSR days did the permission expire and get overlooked? that's a very good question, was it a full licence, or just "Hey do what you want" thing?

I love the shifters. I will be using them ASAP. I like the Dragon Mark Feat as well. I am a little worried that it is so much better than the Magic Initiate Feat but I don't think that was good enough anyway. Magic Initiate feat seems pretty cool if you allow the caster to use spell slots to cast the spell they learned. Mike Mearls said he didn't know what the official ruling would be on that, but he'd allow it. If you really compare the text of Magic Initiate to the text of the drow and tiefling's innate spells, you'll see that the racial abilities say you can cast the spells, but never say that you learn them. Magic Initiate does say that you learn them. Since the general rule (at least as far as multiclassing) is that you can cast any spells you know with any slots you know, it isn't a bad interpretation to allow that to also work with Magic Initiate. You now know the spell, so you can cast it in slots. Of course, there is a phrase in there about not being able to cast the spell ...

The Character Builder is an interesting thing.... Either you had a windows machine that would run it and it was the greatest thing since sliced bread and the online version was a cheap limited imitation that would never be it's equal. Or you didn't have a machine that would run it, and the original version was garbage and the online version was a blessing sent from heaven. I was in the first camp. I was in the third camp: The original version was mediocre, the online version was a wretched barely functional kludge.

I honestly agree with you, and I think that's the biggest problem. For as much as we heard in the playtest about how flexible 5e would be and how rules modules would allow you to make it your game and feel like any edition, it's really the most locked down of certain types of play just aren't allowed in 5e. I agree with this. I do think it is possible, but you'd have to change some of the assumptions in the DMG and opt for the variants. Which is why it would take more effort than this afterthought.

Why would fluff sell, I keep getting told it's a game of immagination, make up your own stuff, I make up my own stuff, I just need rules options, there's 40 years of fluff out there, and my own imagination, I don't buy fluff. If you want to say it's a game of imagination then you technically don't need rules either, you just use your imagination and make stuff up. Would save a lot of money to be honest, but that's not the way it works. Fluff has always sold and sold well. The great thing about established fluff is the fact that it benefits "everyone". Don't want to use it, then don't? Want to modify it, then change what you want? Want to use every bit of it, then you are welcome to it? With that you please everyone. Just because I want fluff doesn't mean my imagination is lacking. Sometimes I want to play in someone's imagination besides my own. Do you play in other people's games? Well if you do then it's the same thing. You are playing in their imagination. Campaign settings such a...
