All the time- probably close to every session. Last night I think I called for an Intelligence (Perception) check to suss out exactly where a noise was coming from. I have used Constitution (Athletics) for long-distance running/swimming, Dexterity (Performance) when the intricacy of getting exactly the right notes of a complex musical piece matters more than putting on a good show,...

If a DM put it that way, sure, but that's not how I would put it myself- and obviously, I wouldn't get to make the call in someone else's game. To me, it's an "Int check to see what you know, and you can apply your proficiency bonus if you know about A or B" situation, with no "you only have time to think about some of what you know" time factor.

I can't remember the specifics, but I know I have seen fighters in my game use Action Surge outside of combat a couple of times. I think one was a chase scene, but couldn't tell you off hand what the other one was. I think the main limitation I put on it is that it has to be used for something that you can do as an action on a single turn. Mistwell's examples are all good for me, except...

You know what I would love to see? An Unearthed Arcana book in the style of 3e's UA, where it was different variant rules and systems that you could plug in, or not, to your own campaign. There's some stuff like this in the DMG, but not nearly enough IMHO. A 5e version could have systems for running a game more like, or more compatible with, earlier editions; it might have things like 1e-style...

For my game, it depends on the player as much as anything. I have some players who are crazy for multiclassing, and others who are single-classers by nature, and others yet who multiclass when it fits the character enough. I think I fall into the latter category as a player. IMHO, multiclassed pcs are roughly equivalent to single-classed pcs of the same level, so it's not about power gaming,...

5ish. Or maybe, "5, but also..." While the regular pc is out, let the player either make a new character to play in the interim (and then to have as a backup pc), play an npc, or play monsters.

IMHO, the answer is basically because those are all too good to be able to use at will without expending a spell slot.

I don't think a mechanical combo is at all the same as a character concept. So, there are two questions to answer here. The first is- will I shoot down a mechanically broken pc? I will absolutely shoot down a pc that is using rules I don't allow. From the PH, the only thing that qualifies is Drow. Drow aren't a pc option in my game. So there you go. As for multiclassing or weird combos, I...

Good God, yes. Not even the tiniest bit. Not at all. I much prefer magic items as treasure, with very rare exceptions.

d20 System Character Sheet 1.5
I tweaked my d20 system sheet to reflect some of the design improvements I made in my other sheets. This also uses layering to allow you to switch between Hit Points and Vitality/Wounds, so you'll need Acrobat 6 or later to use it.

I also made a s...

d20 Modern Character Sheet 2.01

d20 Modern Character Sheet 2.5
This four-page form now features layers which allow you to customize the look of the sheet between d20 Modern, Urban Arcana, d20 Future, d20 Past, and more! (This does mean, however, that you will need Acrobat 6 or later to use it.) Don't want the si...

Castles & Crusades Old Skool Player Character Records
After threatening to make one like forever, I finally got around to making a C&C character sheet - the first of what I hope will be several - probably because actually playing some C&C looms on the horizon. I had started making an "old skool" sheet m...

Castles & Crusades New Record Sheet 1.0

Ars Magica Third Edition Character Sheet, Jason Buss Edition
This is the way-cool sheet that my friend Jason Buss created for the Rabenstein saga. The current ruleset then was the third edition, so you might have to write in some things by hand to use this with the fourth (like experience points for Arts), but...

Ars Magica Fourth Edition Character Sheet

Mad irishman's Ars Magica Fourth Edition Character Sheet 2.1

Mad Irishman's Ars Magica Fifth Edition Character Sheet 2.0
This is quite different from 1.0, for a couple of reasons. One, I was (perhaps ironically with a game like Ars Magica) looking for something more "modern." Second, I wanted something that might attract new blood to the game. To that end, I adopted a ...

Mad irishman Ars Magica Fifth Edition Medieval Character Sheet

Mad Irishman's Arcana Evolved/Unearthed (Malhavoc Press/Sword & Sorcery) Character Sheet 2.5

Mad Irishman's 2300AD Character Sheet 2.1 (GDW)
My favorite hard sci-fi game, now defunct but with an avid following. This character sheet is a two-page sheet with lots of space for skills and weapons, as well as contacts and equipment. Replete with hit location/armor table.

Mad Irishman's AD&D 1st Edition Character Sheet 1.0
or nostalgia's sake, I'm posting the first AD&D (first edition) character sheet I ever made, circa 1989. Before that I was using photocopies of the ones TSR put out. I believe I used MacPaint and SuperPaint on my Mac SE/30 to create a two-page bitmap...

Another of my old sheets I've dug up. Here's one of my AD&D sheets, version 2.1, this one tuned for Oriental Adventures (1st Edition). I believe this was the first version I did in PageMaker. At least when I made this one in 1991 I had somewhat regul...
