Ghosts of Saltmarsh brings seafaring adventure to D&D 5E. While it updates ten adventures, there are many more settings and adventures to explore via ship and beneath the waves. Here are additional settings and adventures for maritime D&D adventures. Basic D&D and Dungeon Crawl Classics explore fantasy seafaring and the Sea of Dread is well detailed above the waves and below. An entire...

With the announcement of Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus taking place in the Nine Hells, it's worth looking back on how we got here. And for that, we can blame Dante Alighieri, whose apocalyptic vision of hell greatly influenced D&D. Dante shown holding a copy of the Divine Comedy, next to the entrance to Hell, the seven terraces of Mount Purgatory and the city of Florence, with the...

There are a lot of role-playing games out there, and almost all of them have something none of the others have. But a few stand out for offering such a new idea that it can change the way we play, or inspire other designers with new ideas. This list is really a fraction of ‘games that changed the industry’. You can probably add plenty more. But as a place to start in looking at some of the most...

The Dragon Issue 21 was published in December 1978. It is 30 pages long, with a cover price of $2.00. In this issue, we have lots of board game reviews and the return of Monty Haul! Editor Tim Kask acknowledges that this issue will be controversial due to the substantial article about the Rail Baron board game. To the fantasy purists, he responds that it is "no less a fantasy to become a...

Wizards of the Coast is promoting Ghosts of Saltmarsh as an adventure book with a setting and rule supplements so since I already did a spoiler-free review of the book overall, let's take a closer look at the adventures it contains. While I avoid significant spoilers, be aware that broad information about each adventure is mentioned. Saltmarsh itself is a fishing village in the Kingdom...

I get messages and emails from RPG creators daily. Occasionally one stands out for a unique reason. The email from Gleb “Crazy Sage” Igumnov sharing the press release for his IndieGoGo for The City of the Steam Sun for Savage Worlds stood out because Crazy Sage is from Russia. My knowledge of Russia would probably cover two Tweets as I know nothing about the nation. So, I asked Crazy Sage about...

Ghosts of Saltmarsh will make Greyhawk fans happy without losing newer D&D 5th Edition players. Billed as a supplement for nautical adventures, it's a mix of new rules for ships and sea travel, adventures and supplemental material for any coastal campaign. Saltmarsh is a fishing village in the Kingdom of Keoland in the Greyhawk setting from D&D's earliest days. Once it was clear that...

How much detail do you need to know to run a particular setting in FRPG? Some settings have about the detail level of comic books, some are more detailed such as Edgar Rice Burroughs' Barsoom novels or Lord of the Rings (LOTR), some have settings as detailed as the Game of Thrones show. Sequels can be a tricky thing to handle, especially when they promise a darker, edgier tone. Despite its much gloomier tone, however, Things from the Flood manages to avoid difficult-second-album syndrome with a game that neatly blends weird sci-fi mysteries and teenage drama, though sometimes it’s hard to tell which aspect is the most dangerous and unsettling. A follow-up to the wildly...

  • 03:48 PM - Aephix quoted Wystan in post Numenera 2: The Kickstarter Is Live!
Monte Cook Games 11-time creator Superbacker 2 days ago... Straight from the KS - Important Line "But we can't do that with the funding we'd generate if we gave you all the PDFs for an upcharge of just $40 or $60." Also known as "No we don't want your extra $40-60"??? Thanks for digging that up...it was in a cluster of about 10 comments that I had completely overlooked when I had scrolled thru. Its unfortunate that they feel that way, but I'm really doubting (at this point) that the campaign will reach a sufficient level where the $100 level will be worth it if you are planning on getting the core books in print, especially if the folks who are backing at the D+D in Print or All the Ebooks tiers aren't pledging the additional amount to add to the campaign total. Going off the "Into the Ninth World" KS, if we get about the same number of backers, backing in roughly the same ratio they have been thus far, the campaign will reach 560-600k. Given that most of the stretch goals have been abo...

They also set this as a VERY long campaign - as a backer of almost all of their prior Kickstarter campaigns I was at the start one of the vocal commentators asking for a "Core in Print + all the PDFs" for $160-$180. The answer seems to be that they feel we should pay the equivalent of 2 pledge levels (basically double paying for all of the PDFs of the core books in KS vernacular) and go for $220 (Note that the Core Books add-on (same price as the pledge level - also known as FULL RETAIL) does not include the PDFs or the KS exclusive book... so there's that) Has anyone at MCG actually said that or are we assuming that based on their lack of a response (I haven't seen anything from them on the comments on the KS to address it, although they maybe said something during the KS Live thing they did last night).

  • 05:50 AM - DMMike quoted Wystan in post How I Learned To Stop Worrying About Game Prep
Using the Cypher System I have literally had players accuse me of writing sections of the game that night for them and I had to explain that I create 90% of the night on the fly - I have a very loose idea of what I want to do and what the players might do (Goals to meet) and then just run with it. And a little advice from Numenera: have a list of names handy. No one wants to meet Bob the Builder. A list of placenames comes in handy too. For Numenera players, the book comes with a detailed map and several location descriptions. For other players: no, we don't want to discover the town of "Rivendell" unless we've already been playing in Middle Earth. And I'm always open to good OGRE suggestions...

  • 04:29 PM - LordNightwinter quoted Wystan in post Next RPG to invest in, need some help.
So you have Cypher system - that is my go-to rules light system.... can you maybe add details on why it did or did not work for you? So I tried running a campaign of The Strange, which I backed at the print lover level, my group enjoyed it but that group is gone. I live in a military town so my players often get out of the military or get orders. My newest group has no real interest in The Strange which is funny because none of them have tried it. I ran multi-session version of Numnera, asked them if they would mind if I made Numenera a world in The Strange and they all said they wanted to go back to 5e. So as of right now it's just a preference thing for my players. They're all dead set on fantasy. I want to be a little more diverse but I don't have a whole lot of player choices right now.
