How many times did Faceman, Mad Dog Murdock trick B.A? This is game where your actions and choices have results. Choose to play the dumb barbarian it sucks when you and Bob can not roleplay the situation out and I have to call for roll. Player agency the get of jail free card of D&D. Aka I not going to do that.

Assuming not a online MMO, then I would want something with access to the adventure engine like NWN. Include a community for sharing, ranking, and maybe even selling the adventures. That would allow them to simple create the game engine and official conversions for the print products while we (the community) could create adventures and campaigns in any setting we want.

My buying will go down unless I hit more cons. My current gaming expenses including cons are $2,930.48. Which is over doubled what I spent in total from 6/2016 -12/2017. I have enough minis so only specials or impulse buys on those. I now have all the AL seasons, so only the modules I planning on running will be bought. So that leaves a Hardcover if I planning on running it.

Fatigue and timing. Fatigue. There has been so much hype for so long, I know I'm tired of it. Many people don't need another adventure yet. Holidays; saving for gifts, plus people have been busy in the US with Thanksgiving and family taking up their time. Plus DH maps were very unsatisfactory for many and the DoMM maps are not getting significantly better reviews.

Thanks for the positive comment. As for furnished rooms, I get it. When I release the map packs I'll also have unfurnished ones. It just seems to me that most people though are not wanting to go and change the ecology of the dungeon too much. i.e. the effort to re-populate areas with more than random encounters. And since providing maps both furnished and unfurnished isn't very hard (just...

Ah, doors are, imo, the biggest challenge with realistic and/or color maps. The way I have chosen to deal with them is by showing them open. Opens doors are pretty recognizable. Here's an example; Secret doors, imo, are best handled with separate DM and player maps. Here's a DM map with a secret door. The player map has the "S" removed and just a thick wall there.

"Some detail" is right, again about 40 locations or so for the first 3 levels. The Lost Levels etc are smaller levels, but fully detailed the 3 levels defined there. It leaves out 80% or more of some of the levels. Extrapolating from previously published maps, if one was to fully detail all the locations, without images and maps a complete Undermountain "book" would be at least 4000 pages long. I'm pretty sure that's what Parmandur is referring to.

Remember, most D&Ders have never seen the old maps, and even fewer are aware of the numerous different iterations from the various boxed sets and different editions that show different versions of the dungeon. But, the desire to have the "whole...

For reference, I've said minutes because when an infested item is opened, they visible jump up to 10 feet. So, in today's world where just about anyone can convert a printed product to a digital product either for free (using a civic source like a library) or purchasing a multi-function printer for less than $100 how do you 'provide sufficient incentive for creators to create' without controlling distribution of said product and/or their format conversions?

Thanks to both of you. The reason I'm wondering is because I'm putting some bookworms into the Ultimate Undermountain. I want to give some reasonable guidance to the DMs on how if the bookworms getting into a spellbook, how quickly they destroy the spells within. Unless someone comes up with something else, I'll go with the 1 page per spell level.

In previous editions, spells in a spellbook took 1 page for each level of the spell. I can't find anything in 5E that indicates this. I do find that a spellbook contains 100 pages. And the cost to transcribe and copy spells, but not how many pages they take. Anyone know a source/reference? Is is still 1 page per level and cantrips take no pages?

What I have always been talking about is the illegal distribution of copyright protection. Continuing down this line is ignoring the issue and throwing FUD into the discussion. So as long as you don't do the stealing/infringement, you are ok with the use of it? So why don't you (or do you?) download all your RPG content from various websites? They are all available and since you wouldn't be doing anything wrong (only the person hosting the infringing content is) you would be morally justified. It sounds to me though like you do purchase at least some of what you use....

Yep, time a day. Have a friend who used to live in SoCal and if she wanted to get to the office at 9am, she had to leave by 7:10am. But if she left at 6am she would get there by 6:45 at the latest. I was teaching a class near LAX once. Well, as has already been pointed out by others, the PHB is not needed to play the game, and not only for those that purchase the game, but for those that do not purchase the PHB the grimoire adds utility to the game, and reduces the need (significantly) to purchase the PHB. It's simple, with a site that "just" reorganizes the spells (and includes all the copyrighted text as well) being...

Taking a ten cent pack of gum from a convenience store is theft, yet I doubt using the word in such a way would be considered the language of rabid zealot. Interesting how using the word for such a low monetary harm is ok, but using it in a way that might indicate many orders of magnitude more in loss is...

  • 11:00 AM - Hussar mentioned jasper in post Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?
...nvincing the group that this was a good idea. But, at no point could I simply say, "Well, either I run it this way or someone else runs" because, well, I'd be shunted to the player seat so fast I'd have burns on my cheeks. :D At the end of the day, I look at what makes DMing fun for me is knowing that I ran the most enjoyable game I could for this group. The more fun that the players are having, the more fun I have. Which generally means that yup, I'll put my preferences behind what the players want most of the time. If I can convince the players that my ideas are good enough, then, yay, I get what I want. But, otherwise, I'm pretty much stuck if I want to run a game where any of the players aren't interested. So, to use the Matt Mercer example. A DM who is unwilling to listen to what his or her players clearly state that they want, and adjust to their tastes, is a bad DM. DMing should always be about listening to the players and giving them what they want. To use jasper's example, to me it's unbelievable that the group would exclude a friend just so they could go eat Chinese food. That's a pretty dick move. That's not what I want my friends to do and I would never do that to a friend. "Hey, we're all going somewhere that you hate, see you later" when there are obviously other options available is unbelievable to me. That would be the last time I went anywhere with you. And, if I'm late coming to the car, you're going to take my wife home and leave me there? Yeah, number one, I'd be looking for a new wife pretty quickly if she didn't get out of that car and number two, that would be the absolute last time I'd associate with you.

  • 08:31 AM - Coroc mentioned jasper in post Do You Play in AL?
jasper Sorry, but that is not the point, it is hard to find players, although I have my private group I would like to have a more established publically organized alternative also. So I am a bit jealous about the way it seems to be in the U.S., where you seem to have a lot more players, and the habitus that you can meet up in a game store to find interested people. This does not exist in that way in Germany, at least I am not aware of.

  • 10:11 PM - iserith mentioned jasper in post Missed session catch-up XP
...s what the guys flanking from the back are for. Do your enemies never have ranged or area effect attacks? All it takes is one boulder from that hill giant to take out that annoying gnat in the back permanently. So I call BS. Well, at least it's BS that these tactics would work in every game. Tactics cannot overcome the fact that low level PCs likely won't survive even a single hit or AOE. You may note that I did not make assertion to the effect that "these tactics would work in every game." You are attacking a strawman. I am not obligated to defend a position I do not hold. I really wish you would stop doing this. It makes conversations with you completely unproductive except to warn others who may be reading to be careful about engaging with you. And I don't know how much more of that particular public service I'm up for or how much more that point needs demonstrating. I gave that example to show that party cohesion and tactics play a big role in survival. That speaks to jasper's point about AL lacking in those things (or my point about that being true of many pickup groups) and it also goes to whether characters of the same level or disparate level are successful. Further, I have already given you ways to deal with hill giants in general. Look, I'm sorry that you and your wife's characters were killed. But there are a lot of reasons why that may be outside of having lower-level characters as I've shown several times.

  • 01:36 PM - Coroc mentioned jasper in post Sleep Spell and Chain Awakening
jasper two things about that, if some Mobs run the logic thing is to chase them they might fetch backup else, which does not improve the chance for a successful rest. The bad luck here was that the Party chasing ran into the backup. The goblins chain awakening - the unlogic part about that is - that the first goblin would try to either run and leave his buddies OR the other Option for the first gob awake would be to try and wake up ALL of his buddies, and NOT RUN after the first. Otherwise the DM is gaming the System. A quick Investigation / medicine / arcana check to decide what would be the most logic reeaction of the goblin would also be in order for the gob to estimate whether his comrades are asleep or dead.

You might think it is cute, or funny, or that the ends justify the means, or that it is completely appropriate given the number of evil, misogynistic trolls that have flooded this thread. It's not. For you to repeatedly make the same comment, asking for social security numbers, and to implicitly call people that disagree with you harassers, is a form of harassment. This latest comment that I have quoted is pure trolling. If you had been making those comments to me, I would have reported you for harassment; asking for people's social security numbers on an on-line forum is never appropriate. There are a lot of good, interesting, and substantive things people have said on this thread. Becau...

  • 04:46 PM - delericho mentioned jasper in post Where Do They Get Their Literacy?
Literacy, or the lack thereof, and languages in general, is one of those areas where I would really like for the game to pay quite a bit more attention... while at the same time finding it to be a huge pain whenever it does. jasper and Eltab basically summed it up: language barriers serve as a roadblock that can all-too-readily prevent the players best able to (or most interested in) getting involved in a scene. And, in cases where the entire party lack the key language, they can completely derail the adventure - much like a riddle the PCs can't (but must) solve, or a secret door they can't (but must) find. (And then, to get round that the game provides a solution in the form of an easily-cast spell, turning an insurmountable roadblock into a trivial speed-bump. I'm not sure that's better.) With languages, I'm inclined to mostly handwave them - assume just about everyone speaks Common and just about everyone is literate... until, very occasionally, you hit a situation where they are not. For instance, the PCs might be teleported half a world away, and so for one adventure they then need to deal with a language barrier. Keep it up just long enough to be interesting... and the moment it's not declare that the...

  • 04:05 PM - MechaTarrasque mentioned jasper in post Stampede
I think this is a connotation vs. denotation issue. The dictionary definition (as seen at http://www.dictionary.com/browse/stampede?s=t) does not specify "open spaces", but does mention "frightened animals" (like those escaping the fire in jasper's post), but the connotation (largely from to Western and Tarzan movies) is of large animals on an open plane. This is useful since the DM should have to decide what kind (or at least how large) of animals are stampeding. If it is a bunch of big animals, I would treat it as if two animals attacked each PC every round, if it is a bunch of little animals, one or two swarms should do it, and if it is a mix, maybe one large animal and one swarm per round.

The sword is a sword thing is a bit of a myth, military tactics changed a huge amount over 1500 years, You went from unarmored masses to hoplites to legions to cataphracts and then to Knights and then things like Tercio and Landsknect. Yes, military tactics indeed changed over the centuries, but the basic form of the sword did not. A sword from 400 BC would be entirely recognisable and usable by someone in 1400 AD. As jasper alludes, a sword is a tool. How the tool is used is a separate question.

  • 03:23 PM - KahlessNestor mentioned jasper in post Please remove Demiplane of Dread Story Award next season
jasper Your condescending tone doesn’t help any, nor do half your responses. Who cares what you gaming store schedule is? It's not even relevant. Do you know anyone who even still runs S4 content? No one. There's a reason for that. It's because no one wants to lose their character to a stupid story reward. I had 2 characters get locked in because I can't make it every week. It isn't just a portabolity issue. It's also a frequency of play issue. AL needs to be not just portable, but also drop on/drop out. Demiplane of Dread works against both of these core tenets of Organized Play. Story rewards shouldn't undermine the basic core of your program. Reward players who can make it, but don't punish those who can't. Luckily I was abke to buy my bard out of Barovia, but my druid wasn’t so lucky. I had to rely on DM mercy letting me go into DTD debt to play her at a con. Ad now I can't play her and get dinosaur forms because of the damn death curse, another poorly thought out story "reward". S...

  • 05:52 PM - Kobold Boots mentioned jasper in post Are powergamers a problem and do you allow them to play in your games?
jasper Replying to you this way as your quote tags are messed up so I'd rather be clear than sort that out. 1. Talking is never the best first idea with any problem or most situations. Figuring out the problem is. Reason: Talk without data is opinion and generally a waste of time. 2. If you don't like the person you're gaming with, that's the problem. The power gaming is secondary. 3. If you do like the person you're gaming with and he or she is a power gamer, then the solution is pretty easy. Do the stats, scale the encounters, you're done. 4. Best advice to DMs who think they're scaling things without doing the stats is, "Don't trust your gut" it got you in trouble in the first place and is why you're having the problem. Nuff said here because I offered help and you replied back with something silly, so I'm done with you. Be well KB

  • 03:03 PM - Tormyr mentioned jasper in post Super Monk Jumps
From the PHB "The effects of different spells add together while the durations of those spells overlap." So if you want a strictly RAW and there is no Sage info on this *snip* As jasper pointed out earlier, Xanathar's clarifies that the proper name of the effect is what is important for determining what stacks rather than the effect itself. So multiple jump spells do not stack, but jump should stack with Step of the Wind. Step of the Wind merely allows the monk to jump as well as a strength fighter at the cost of a ki point.

  • 06:13 PM - Tormyr mentioned jasper in post Super Monk Jumps
Thanks for the replies everybody. Doesn't look like there's a clear consensus or rule for this. My initial feeling was frustration at what I thought seemed OP. But some of the replies here have changed my mind to allow it at X6. Super Monk Jumping would be super cinematic. jasper makes a good point about both the ring and step of the wind requiring a bonus action. However the jump spell lasts a minute, so the effects could be combined on the next turn.

  • 04:02 AM - Yaarel mentioned jasper in post What is the best way to handle ‘magic resistance’ in D&D 5e?
Coroc I was wondering about defining 5e magic resistance as verses non-instanteous effects? So magic resistance is vulnerable verses Fireball, because the effect is instantaneous, thus the fire itself is nonmagical. This might require too much bookkeeping to look up whether any particular spell is instantaneous or not. Also, Antimagic Field negates Fireball too, so it seems even instantaneous effects are considered magical. Note, if 5e ‘magic resistance’ is simply a save advantage, then by definition, any spell that attacks AC, like Animate Object, bypasses the magic resistance. Ironically, the magical energy of Eldritch Blast attacks AC, so it might bypass the magic resistance. However Eldritch Blast is a ‘ranged spell attack’, so perhaps magic resistance applies verses ‘spell attacks’. In light of Gnome Cunning, and for the sake of simplicity, I am inclined to say, anything that attacks AC can bypass magic resistance. jasper Looking at 1e Drow magic resistance 50% + 2% per level. I figure, for 5e, advantage is good enough, and stays reasonably balanced.

  • 06:37 PM - Satyrn mentioned jasper in post [5e] Feats, what gives?
Again, That's just a sleazy player. Maybe I'm lost here, are people who optimize builds, with DM discretion and respect towards the game that everyone agreed to play power gamers, or are people who want perfect munchkins regardless of how the DM and fellow players think and feel power gamers? I don't think feats affect peoples choices anymore than stats or classes do. I think jasper's essentially saying that feats become a tool that -when layered on top of the choices made with stats and classes - provide too many choices for his preferences, that the accumulated number of choices reach a certain threshokd it creates an environment ripe for powergaming - and he doesn't enjoy that. So if you ignore his denigration of the style and preferences he doesn't enjoy, I read him as saying "Feats are the path to the dark side. Feats lead to choices. Choices leads to powergaming. Powergaming leads to suffering." Well, his suffering because it's not the style he prefers.

Are you sure about that? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gresham%27s_law Normally, coins are worth *more* than their metal content. If they aren't, they get melted down. Even though it is a "Law" it is only a principal used in economic theory. That's not to say it is wrong, but it is also to say that it is not always true. As soon as the coin becomes substantially more valuable than the metal plus the cost to create it, it will be forged, which will then put pressure on driving the value down. But anyway, my intent is not to debate this. I'm not an expert on it, nor do I care that much about it to research it. All, Interesting topic, but I think that there is more thought and modern impacts being discussed here than most players will ever notice or care about. @jasper, I'm not offering. I thought you said you were getting (from source unspecified) a case of mini's for writing these articles :)

  • 04:06 PM - Lord Mhoram quoted jasper in post Skills used by players on other players.
I read that one as B.A's player saying at the start of the game "I'm gonna play a combat monster who's sort of stubborn and obnoxious - you guys figure out ways to get to go along for the fun of it" - and then the players had fun trying to see how they could outdo themselves over the last time in getting the B.A. to go along - and everyone thought it was great. It wasn't that the other players were controlling the dumb barbarian - the player stated upfront that is what he wanted to do. So no "Get out of jail free card". Note that kind of situation came up in a game I was in. Everyone at the table loved it.

Um. Um. No. Repeat after me. "Occasionally the monster wins!". A quick reset nerfs the monster. True but the idea is to have fun. That takes priority. Leaving a player's character with zero Int is un-fun. This is actually worse than the PC dying.

I have to disagree with Pauln6. I think stringing his bow was either a trick. Or a special attuned item which only allow him to string it. Stringing the bow was definitely a feat of strength in the myth, so Pauln6 is right on that count, but I think this is a good way to represent it in D&D without over-inflating his STR stat. ^^^Not my comment. Not sure what's going on but will address yinz tomorrow! --MM

  • 09:08 PM - Celebrim quoted jasper in post When did mixing editions become unusual?
Guys, gals, and orcs. It was dirt simple to figure out Thac0. Jasper rolls 4d6 times removes the lowest. Rolls 5 d6 for his 5th level thief. Writes 10 to -10 across the bottom of his note book paper. Grabs Celebrim's dm screen and copies the row. Err, Celebrim grabs his DM screen and makes one row for each weapon Jasper wields. Then he grabs the Weapon vs. AC table from the Unearthed Arcana, modified the rows accordingly, factors in any magic item bonuses and adjustments for STR or DEX and now I know exactly what Jasper needs to hit anything without looking it up. I do this for each PC, then I binder clip the new sheet of tables to the DM screen over the top of the underlying 'to hit' tables for reference to create a set of tables that represent the actual PC's in the game without any need to cross reference anything. Adjust the tables occasionally as they get new gear or their THAC0 changes. Players can off course do the same, but since I don't normally tell them the armor class and armor (class) bonus of the opponent they are fighting, it...

So say $30 in gas because The Altanta airport is only 2 hours 20 from my front door (ask me how I know.) And I was not paying attention to drive time once I hit Atlanta proper. Gothca, all in makes sense. For all in that's not to bad. Less expensive than many vacations.

Cons are expensive. Dragon*con was 818.16 and 13.16 of that was paying for a frame for the free swag. My wife actually liked old dragon con poster they gave me. Most of the other swag, I have read and passed on. Yikes! Just to get in‽ Are you including the hotel cost? I don't think I would ever spend that much for a fan con. Maybe I'm dating myself with my sticker shock. Still, even though I have far more disposable income than when I was young, I would not want to spend that amount of money on top of travel, hotel, food, and purchases. I'd rather use that money to buy new games or on other hobbies.

  • 06:41 AM - MNblockhead quoted jasper in post How will your gaming-purchase habits change in 2019?
My buying will go down unless I hit more cons. My current gaming expenses including cons are $2,930.48. Which is over doubled what I spent in total from 6/2016 -12/2017. I have enough minis so only specials or impulse buys on those. I now have all the AL seasons, so only the modules I planning on running will be bought. So that leaves a Hardcover if I planning on running it. Oh, I forgot to inlcude Con costs. I only go to Con of the North as any other vacation time are for the whole family. Even though I live in the area I get a room at the hotel. Con of the North is more about playing games than a trade show. Not many vendors there so I don't spend much beyond room, board, and registration.

  • 06:06 PM - LordEntrails quoted jasper in post Dungeon of the Mad Mage Maps and Miscellany Review aka Rip Off.
Two, here is the ad copy 'Hundreds of years ago, long before Waterdeep was built, Halaster Blackcloak carved a vast dungeon beneath Mount Waterdeep and stocked it with all manner of creatures from across the planes. Though it is likely impossible to map out the entirety of Halaster's domain, the maps contained herein lay out the bulk of this deadly. dungeon and are certain to lead you through many hours of play." Notice STILL no mention of size. ... I appreciate the warning. The ad copy is deceptive. IMO, mainly because the maps in DoMM only detail about 15% of what has previously been detailed for the Undermountain, I don't see how anyone can claim that is the "bulk". I will say I'm not surprised by what you describe. I have mixed feelings about it though because I'm working on releasing my own versions of the maps ;p I've been so disappointed (much for the same reasons as you) with their recent maps that I've started a project to create and sell on the DMsGuild full color maps for ...

  • 04:35 PM - TaranTheWanderer quoted jasper in post Aging and Immortality and does it Matter?
Would I allow a human with a immortality background No! Would I let a pc human try for immortality yes. I'm curious about the reasoning behind this. I like the idea of a Character searching for immortality (The story of becoming a god, or turning in to a lich, finding the fountain of youth etc...)It's a pretty common trope in D&D and fantasy in general. Why would you not allow a 400 year old human when 400 year old Elves are common? Is there a specific reason why you wouldn't allow it? I'm not saying they can't be killed but, instead, don't age. Do you feel it would break the game somehow or is it something else?
  • 12:37 AM - Panda-s1 quoted jasper in post Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?
And that's probably one too many. Please, don't call people names, or ascribe character flaws to them due to choices about how his group pretends to be elves. And, if you do, and you seem to get away with it, don't continue to publicly belabor the point. :/ That's not who I was calling a coward, but okay. It's just a little frustrating to deal with; I wish I could be this openly indignant about some of the names I've been called before (not in this thread, before anyone tries to jump on me for exaggerating). I just honestly feel like even if I didn't say coward some people in this thread would still be blasting me with hyperbole because of saying someone could be a bad DM (I'm not the only one who's had to deal with this here either). Oh I forgot the splat book name at the time of the writing. It was Complete Paladin's Handbook. Published for 2nd edition around 1 May 1994 https://www.amazon.com/Complete-Paladins-Handbook-Advanced-Supplement/dp/1560768452 The Name of the play...

Because you is in the outer ring. The Point of the Thread is "What official material do DM ban and why?". When the dms say what they ban, you come in with the ridiculous post of a DM must build a consensus to be a good dm. You MAY have a good Point if this thread was about BEING A GOOD DM. So you off point, off topic, and that makes your posts RIDICULOUS. And we will go along with the gag and reply with RIDICULOUS POSTS. Now. As a DM what would you ban? It really isn't off point, or off topic, or ridiculous. What you limit, what you add via homebrew, and what the role of the DM is (or should be) in the typical game group or the ideal game group--these are all related issues, and should absolutely be discussed together. This is especially true because the question of the thread isn't "what would you ban?" The question is, "Why?" There's only one answer, and it applies to almost all DMs. The answer to why some DMs limit 'official' material is the same as the answer to why some add 'hom...

  • 11:02 PM - Panda-s1 quoted jasper in post Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?
Use rope much? Okay the eladrin uses a rope to get other players across. While he's setting up the rope he's ambushed by goblins and has to fight them off on his own. Or in the case of hobgoblins the party is ambushed while two of the PCs are going across on the rope, and one of the hobgoblins manages to cut the rope before they can get across. You could argue Mystara does not have misty-stepping Eladrin. Irrelevant. But at what point can you not accept no for an answer? Never, did you miss where I said I go from game to game and ruin DMs settings by inserting my weird homebrew races? Do you just love eladrin that goddamn much? It's an example. To be clear I don't give a crap about Eladrin, I just think you should be honest about how you represent DM's as inflexible but are unwilling to answer the same question when turned on the player. Players don't get to be very flexible, meanwhile DMs can do whatever they want in their game, why would I advocate for DM flexibility? "Please ...

So he has to learn to got along with reasonable demands. Or hit Steak and Shake alone this Taco Tuesday. Sorry If I told the group the Convoy/Train/Plane leaves at 1600 hrs 2 times before the event, 2 times in the ride to the event. 2 times at the event. And at 1545 I tell you to be ready, you turn and run away deeper in the con. You are the one with problem. So Matt Mercer must allow me to use my Vulcan with wolverine claws, phaser, and magical missile or he is a bad DM. Got it. Why is it when I suggest that consensus is a better way to run a game, people automatically take things to ridiculous extremes and assume bad faith on the part of the player? I really don't get it.

Not when I told the group the move out plans twice before the con, twice at the con. And then told Bob we leaving in 15 minutes to have Bob do an about face and walk out of meeting room. Especially Since Bob was not paying part of the room fee, gas money, or did not even offer to buy me a soda for the trouble. The con was only 94 miles away. But I told Bob I would have left him even if it was 200 + miles to home. Bob was being the phallic. And Bob the husband had told people before when they lost the dinner choice to suck it up, we just laught. In fairness, if Bob's not pitching in for gas or expenses and he's being petulant, that does somewhat change the situation.
