As Gauchi shows below, this is perception, not reality. Just because you think DIS means you will miss, hence you take another action, doesn't actually mean that you actually can't hit once you have DIS. Yes the odds decrease, but its not the end of the world.

...Another reason why as many people didn’t use minis at the time? You had to paint them...BS Until 2 weeks ago I still had some unpainted minis. OCT 1982 One of the E-4 gave me 3 or 4 yellow boxes of minis. Forget the company. And the boxes were not full. Two weeks ago, I gave my left over lead minis to the local game store owner just to get them out my house. Still need to get the tackle box...

Thanks aco175. I can see your point about long range not being much of a UnderDark desire. But surely there are places in the UD where range is certainly a consideration, I'm thinking of all the drow "cities" as the descriptions of those are certainly large enough to be well beyond the range of even siege equipment. But, I'm trying to think of how a bowstring would prevent disadvantage against...

Adv and Dis counteract each other so when Stone Camo applies, he would have a normal stealth check. Now, maybe I would see a DM allowing Adv using stone cunning if the guy was hiding only, and not moving. But if he's moving, then the roll would be offset. At my table.

I started with Holmes, and have played every edition since. But have had many multi-year lapses of no gaming or only reading. Timing is perhaps the biggest thing for me. I started playing occasionally with my son using 4E. But he became a teen as 5E was released as as we both got more serious, it was the current edition and fit well with my desires. I see the various editions, especially...

It should peeve you. So don't do it. Sure, a wandering dragon who fights intelligently is going to suck for the party. But a party that is hunting a dragon better have made appropriate plans for it. A dragon should be a dangerous foe, and an unprepared party is going to have problems. Or they better have problems!

So, say I chose to play a character like Raistlin. A great magic user with absolutely no business being anyway near melee. And now the adventure calls for the PCs to be attacked in their room by ghosts, or rats, or whatever the situation is that forces all the PCs into melee with no room to escape. Now suddenly the adventure sucks because it was designed poorly? Or the game is bad because...

I still don't see a problem. Their are choices, and consequences to those choices. And not every choice has an equal impact on each aspect of the game. Sounds like a good system to me.

So, did anyone ever address the point made a few time by various people earlier in this thread that choices have consequences and that's a good thing? That not every class can or should be competant at every aspect of the game? And in this case; both ranged and melee?

You are proficient in all weapons. But damage changes with class not weapon. Arcana Casters and monks do a d4 Clerics, Rangers and those other fighter types with spells do a d6 Thieves do a d8 Fighters Barbarian included do a d10 If you mix classes you do the lesser damage. So A Figher 10 wizard 2 will do a d4. Any new or old cool looking weapon does a d2.

That's the intent, but... it's going to be a surprise for the players. So I want to come up with something cool, not game changing (their AC's are already really high for level 5), but memorable. I'm thinking of starting off letting them know something is up by making their armor start to squeak. The two sets of armor will actually be talking to each other, but the party won't know that yet....

The only thing I will add to Quickleaf's reply is that to #3, yes you can use anything published by anyone else. Assuming you are not doing something like a collection or best of. You don't actually have to share profits or credit them, but you would be a jerk if you didn't.

IMO if a player tries to squeak some duffus interpretation of the wall being a squiggle and the target can't move out of it or takes damage multiple times in a round, the easiest solution it to just say, "No, doesn't work." and move on. Saying the WoF can only be a perfectly straight line or a perfect circle removes the opportunity for fun too many times. Let them do it, it's pretty simple RAI.

Taking your time to over plan just to save 1 hit point of damage. AKA It does not take 20 minutes to decide go up the center of the wall etc. Beg for a game and be a no show regularly. Dropping in a game without getting permission. Not providing your fair share of snackage.

Yea, the rule of fun! So the PC's had to retreat twice before they finally defeated the animated armors. Then they wanted to loot the pieces and have plate armor. I said, "sure." After all, I knew I could do something with it at a later date (hence this thread). And, why say "No" when I can say "Yes" and have fun with it later :) In a high squeaky voice that sounds like metal on metal: ...

Well, its from Undermountain so the short answer is Halaster probably did it. Since he's evil, if he made these (seems reasonable) then the act of animating them would probably have been evil. But, since they guard an ancient throne room, it could have been a willing sacrifice from a bunch of royal dwarven guards that pre-date Halaster. Maybe a combination of both? Hmm... Hmm, maybe they...

Different paragraphs, that means they are separate thoughts. I control exotic armors for druids because I like the fluff and think its important. (separate thought below) I feel that making exotic druid armors available and just charging more than standard armors is just making druids pay a tax for metal-like armors. i.e. 'you are a druid and can wear heavy armor like the cleric, but...

Something I can't image any RPG player that has a good memory and has played for years probably can avoid. Metgaming is not an evil word or act, not when it is done because of experience. As for your suggestion, I already said I do those types of things. But, after a round of combat or two, people...

When a min-maxer shows up at my table and all they are worried about are what loopholes I will allow so that they can get a slightly higher DPR or some bizarre combo and they have no character concept or theme, that takes the fun away from me and often the other players at the table. So yea, it's not bad wrong fun, it's just not going to be done at my...

Exotic armors for druids are not something I allow my players to buy. They can only be found as treasure or as reward. i.e. I control it so that I can control balance and power. IMO, if exotic armors are available for purchase, then you are simply placing a tax upon druids rather than maintaining an important aspect of the flavor of choosing a druid.

Because if you argue the spell makes a fixed volume of firewall, then making it thinner means you can make it longer, or higher, etc. So, if the wall is just as effective if it is 1/10": thick, then you just made the 'area' (length and height) of the wall 10 times more.

Neither of you are getting it, which is ok because I didn't really explain it. First, the player likes re-roll initiative. It adds more variables to the combats, which are otherwise fairly boring for him. It's not that he can just predict what the other players will do, but without much effort he knows what is otherwise going to statistically happen. 'The two npcs will die on turn 2, and this...

...an that of an English longbow so it might have somewhat better chances, but even the worst arquebus bullet will have kinetic energy 5x- 10x of a longbow. As I stated the cause of death was often not the wound but an infection. So main purpose of medieval armor was not to get hit less but to not get hit at all Why? Because of infection risk. Of course in the beginning longbows would more often penetrate the lesser armor but as soon as good suits of full plate were available at least for knights and nobility they would only get taken our by a lucky arrow through the helmet slit or such, The hail of longbow arrows might be stressing or irritating and might kill their horse or their worse clad underlings but the knights were close to invulnerable. I recommend you check up the vids of scholagladiatora on youtube this guy does talk a lot about all kinds of weapons and also missconceptions like longbow arrows or katanas cutting through hardened steel - they only do that in holywood. @jasper matt Easton also did some videos on the battle of agnicourt and longbow use ethere and how it did affect various troops.

  • 11:00 AM - Hussar mentioned jasper in post Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?
...nvincing the group that this was a good idea. But, at no point could I simply say, "Well, either I run it this way or someone else runs" because, well, I'd be shunted to the player seat so fast I'd have burns on my cheeks. :D At the end of the day, I look at what makes DMing fun for me is knowing that I ran the most enjoyable game I could for this group. The more fun that the players are having, the more fun I have. Which generally means that yup, I'll put my preferences behind what the players want most of the time. If I can convince the players that my ideas are good enough, then, yay, I get what I want. But, otherwise, I'm pretty much stuck if I want to run a game where any of the players aren't interested. So, to use the Matt Mercer example. A DM who is unwilling to listen to what his or her players clearly state that they want, and adjust to their tastes, is a bad DM. DMing should always be about listening to the players and giving them what they want. To use jasper's example, to me it's unbelievable that the group would exclude a friend just so they could go eat Chinese food. That's a pretty dick move. That's not what I want my friends to do and I would never do that to a friend. "Hey, we're all going somewhere that you hate, see you later" when there are obviously other options available is unbelievable to me. That would be the last time I went anywhere with you. And, if I'm late coming to the car, you're going to take my wife home and leave me there? Yeah, number one, I'd be looking for a new wife pretty quickly if she didn't get out of that car and number two, that would be the absolute last time I'd associate with you.

jasper Sorry, but that is not the point, it is hard to find players, although I have my private group I would like to have a more established publically organized alternative also. So I am a bit jealous about the way it seems to be in the U.S., where you seem to have a lot more players, and the habitus that you can meet up in a game store to find interested people. This does not exist in that way in Germany, at least I am not aware of.

  • 10:11 PM - iserith mentioned jasper in post Missed session catch-up XP
...s what the guys flanking from the back are for. Do your enemies never have ranged or area effect attacks? All it takes is one boulder from that hill giant to take out that annoying gnat in the back permanently. So I call BS. Well, at least it's BS that these tactics would work in every game. Tactics cannot overcome the fact that low level PCs likely won't survive even a single hit or AOE. You may note that I did not make assertion to the effect that "these tactics would work in every game." You are attacking a strawman. I am not obligated to defend a position I do not hold. I really wish you would stop doing this. It makes conversations with you completely unproductive except to warn others who may be reading to be careful about engaging with you. And I don't know how much more of that particular public service I'm up for or how much more that point needs demonstrating. I gave that example to show that party cohesion and tactics play a big role in survival. That speaks to jasper's point about AL lacking in those things (or my point about that being true of many pickup groups) and it also goes to whether characters of the same level or disparate level are successful. Further, I have already given you ways to deal with hill giants in general. Look, I'm sorry that you and your wife's characters were killed. But there are a lot of reasons why that may be outside of having lower-level characters as I've shown several times.

  • 01:36 PM - Coroc mentioned jasper in post Sleep Spell and Chain Awakening
jasper two things about that, if some Mobs run the logic thing is to chase them they might fetch backup else, which does not improve the chance for a successful rest. The bad luck here was that the Party chasing ran into the backup. The goblins chain awakening - the unlogic part about that is - that the first goblin would try to either run and leave his buddies OR the other Option for the first gob awake would be to try and wake up ALL of his buddies, and NOT RUN after the first. Otherwise the DM is gaming the System. A quick Investigation / medicine / arcana check to decide what would be the most logic reeaction of the goblin would also be in order for the gob to estimate whether his comrades are asleep or dead.

But I also don't like trolls even if they happen to agree with my point of view. What you are doing is trolling. You might think it is cute, or funny, or that the ends justify the means, or that it is completely appropriate given the number of evil, misogynistic trolls that have flooded this thread. It's not. For you to repeatedly make the same comment, asking for social security numbers, and to implicitly call people that disagree with you harassers, is a form of harassment. This latest comment that I have quoted is pure trolling. If you had been making those comments to me, I would have reported you for harassment; asking for people's social security numbers on an on-line forum is never appropriate. There are a lot of good, interesting, and substantive things people have said on this thread. Becau...

  • 04:46 PM - delericho mentioned jasper in post Where Do They Get Their Literacy?
Literacy, or the lack thereof, and languages in general, is one of those areas where I would really like for the game to pay quite a bit more attention... while at the same time finding it to be a huge pain whenever it does. jasper and Eltab basically summed it up: language barriers serve as a roadblock that can all-too-readily prevent the players best able to (or most interested in) getting involved in a scene. And, in cases where the entire party lack the key language, they can completely derail the adventure - much like a riddle the PCs can't (but must) solve, or a secret door they can't (but must) find. (And then, to get round that the game provides a solution in the form of an easily-cast spell, turning an insurmountable roadblock into a trivial speed-bump. I'm not sure that's better.) With languages, I'm inclined to mostly handwave them - assume just about everyone speaks Common and just about everyone is literate... until, very occasionally, you hit a situation where they are not. For instance, the PCs might be teleported half a world away, and so for one adventure they then need to deal with a language barrier. Keep it up just long enough to be interesting... and the moment it's not declare that the...

  • 04:05 PM - MechaTarrasque mentioned jasper in post Stampede
I think this is a connotation vs. denotation issue. The dictionary definition (as seen at http://www.dictionary.com/browse/stampede?s=t) does not specify "open spaces", but does mention "frightened animals" (like those escaping the fire in jasper's post), but the connotation (largely from to Western and Tarzan movies) is of large animals on an open plane. This is useful since the DM should have to decide what kind (or at least how large) of animals are stampeding. If it is a bunch of big animals, I would treat it as if two animals attacked each PC every round, if it is a bunch of little animals, one or two swarms should do it, and if it is a mix, maybe one large animal and one swarm per round.

The sword is a sword thing is a bit of a myth, military tactics changed a huge amount over 1500 years, You went from unarmored masses to hoplites to legions to cataphracts and then to Knights and then things like Tercio and Landsknect. Yes, military tactics indeed changed over the centuries, but the basic form of the sword did not. A sword from 400 BC would be entirely recognisable and usable by someone in 1400 AD. As jasper alludes, a sword is a tool. How the tool is used is a separate question.

  • 03:23 PM - KahlessNestor mentioned jasper in post Please remove Demiplane of Dread Story Award next season
jasper Your condescending tone doesn’t help any, nor do half your responses. Who cares what you gaming store schedule is? It's not even relevant. Do you know anyone who even still runs S4 content? No one. There's a reason for that. It's because no one wants to lose their character to a stupid story reward. I had 2 characters get locked in because I can't make it every week. It isn't just a portabolity issue. It's also a frequency of play issue. AL needs to be not just portable, but also drop on/drop out. Demiplane of Dread works against both of these core tenets of Organized Play. Story rewards shouldn't undermine the basic core of your program. Reward players who can make it, but don't punish those who can't. Luckily I was abke to buy my bard out of Barovia, but my druid wasn’t so lucky. I had to rely on DM mercy letting me go into DTD debt to play her at a con. Ad now I can't play her and get dinosaur forms because of the damn death curse, another poorly thought out story "reward". S...

  • 05:52 PM - Kobold Boots mentioned jasper in post Are powergamers a problem and do you allow them to play in your games?
jasper Replying to you this way as your quote tags are messed up so I'd rather be clear than sort that out. 1. Talking is never the best first idea with any problem or most situations. Figuring out the problem is. Reason: Talk without data is opinion and generally a waste of time. 2. If you don't like the person you're gaming with, that's the problem. The power gaming is secondary. 3. If you do like the person you're gaming with and he or she is a power gamer, then the solution is pretty easy. Do the stats, scale the encounters, you're done. 4. Best advice to DMs who think they're scaling things without doing the stats is, "Don't trust your gut" it got you in trouble in the first place and is why you're having the problem. From the PHB "The effects of different spells add together while the durations of those spells overlap." So if you want a strictly RAW and there is no Sage info on this *snip* As jasper pointed out earlier, Xanathar's clarifies that the proper name of the effect is what is important for determining what stacks rather than the effect itself. So multiple jump spells do not stack, but jump should stack with Step of the Wind. Step of the Wind merely allows the monk to jump as well as a strength fighter at the cost of a ki point.

...Another reason why as many people didn’t use minis at the time? You had to paint them...BS Until 2 weeks ago I still had some unpainted minis. OCT 1982 One of the E-4 gave me 3 or 4 yellow boxes of minis. Forget the company. And the boxes were not full. Two weeks ago, I gave my left over lead minis to the local game store owner just to get them out my house. Still need to get the tackle box back for her. Oh I had lots that I never finished painting too. But I know a lot of people that wouldn’t consider buying minis until they were prepainted. They had no interest in learning how to, and didn’t want them if they weren’t. I’m not saying everyone is that way, but the painted minis picked up a lot of customers that didn’t buy the unpainted ones.

And some of my nerd friends have been a total FAIL at raising a family. So Maher has a leg to stand on. Only if manly man have never been a total FAIL at raising a family. Oh wait, they did. You are just beating your chest and saying my tribe good, Maher tribe bad. Sure, if Maher attacks my tribe, I'll attack his twice as hard and tell him that it should be an object lesson to keep the peace or else. Let's see how worthwhile his brand of manhood is in direct confrontation.

  • 10:26 PM - Yunru quoted jasper in post RPG Writer Zak S Accused Of Abusive Behaviour
Me and my wife have went round and round on this subject. What do you do to an award winner when his behavior is no longer acceptable. Or has become acceptable? (Alan Turning was prosecuted for being gay). There is no one answer. Some groups have struck awards from people being unacceptable. Some groups have given awards for past deeds once the behavior/etc have become acceptable. (see various Medal of Honors given to dead black troops). In modern times do we strike the persons name from the rolls, add an asterisk, etc? Do we unperson them by editing their name out of books, thank you's, etc. ? Does it various with fields? Sorry Bob you are now consider an terrorist, turn in your Noble Peace Prize. What happens after we unperson someone, we find out the behavior was misreported? It's why I'm such an advocate for the separation of creator and creation. I mean, the Abrahamic religions already do it, no-one's condemned Einstein for his part in making nukes (except himself), etc.

  • 05:48 PM - Celebrim quoted jasper in post The Battle Continues Over "Childish Things"
And would any non gamer/geek really know who Stan Lee was if he was not an incredible huckster? Who was smart enough to make sure his contract stated he MUST APPEAR IN ALL MARVEL MOVIES. Stan was famous in the geek community long before he was a regular Easter Egg in the Marvel Extended universe. But my absolute favorite comic book reference in the movies doesn't actually reference Stan directly (even though Stan wrote the dialogue for the character), but his partner Jack Kirby, and it comes from the movie 'Crimson Tide'. In the movie, the XO protagonist has to deal with a fight that has broken out between two technicians aboard his boat: Hunter: Rivetti, what's up? Rivetti: I'm sorry, Sir. It's just a difference of opinion that got out of hand. Hunter: What about? Rivetti: It's really too silly to talk about, Sir. I'd really just forget about... Hunter: I don't give a damn about what you'd rather forget about. Why were you two fighting? Rivetti: I said, the Kirby Silver Surfer w...

1 .Did you buy your book? If yes write in. 2. Are you going to become so world famous that people will bid $$$$$ for a post-it of your shopping list? WRITE IN YOUR BOOKS! 3. Do think writing in your books will kill the resell value? Unless you are 2, there are too many copies out in the world so, WRITE IN YOUR BOOKS! 4. Do need the notes in one place? WRITE IN YOUR BOOKS! Homework WRITE IN YOUR BOOKS! 100 times before Friday. NOOOOO!!! Don't go to the dark side. Books should remain as pristine as possible throughout the time you use them. :D Ok, my mom was a librarian. The notion of writing in books was beaten out of me at a young age. :p Out of the criticisms by Retreater, the one I will NEVER understand is the complaint about official adventures. This is 2019. We've had 3pp adventures in the game for twenty years now. Why in the name of little fishes do you need "official" adventures. DM's Guild lists almost 3 THOUSAND 5e adventures. What more do you need?

  • 01:35 AM - GlassJaw quoted jasper in post what would you want to see in a revised Weapon Chart?
Wow, awesome stuff so far! Lots of things I've already considered but a lot of new ideas too. I should also add a couple more design goals: Make the system as plug-and-play as possible, so keep the changes to the core rules as minimal as possible. Stay as close as possible to the "spirit" of D&D. I always try to keep in mind possible publication on DMs Guild so while interesting ideas, these deviate too far from my design goals: No weapon table. Instead, a flowchart/rules for creating your own weapons. Call them whatever you want. You start with simple or martial, which determines die size. Then you add tags, each of which either raise or lower the damage die by one step. You are proficient in all weapons. But damage changes with class not weapon. Weapon speeds that modify initiative.

I'm all for a good plan, but this is why I stopped playing Shadowrun 5e. Every session somehow involves spending an hour planning how exactly you're going to kick down a door and kill everyone behind it. Taking your time to over plan just to save 1 hit point of damage. AKA It does not take 20 minutes to decide go up the center of the wall etc.

  • 06:35 PM - Retreater quoted jasper in post Would you invite this player?
7 players are not the problem. But he sounds like a jerk. If you are going to do a Session 0, do so. Do place him on notice that stealing from the party, hogging the table, etc are no nos and will result in him being not invited back. Just because someone is good person to hang with, does not mean they can't be a jerk at x. X could be gaming, movie night, going to a baseball game, etc. This is true. I have experience with tables this large (and larger). I plan on laying out my expectations for all the players before the dice start rolling (staying focused on the game to keep it moving smoothly, no inter-party conflict like stealing, deception checks, etc.) [I did this during Session 0, but I think a recap for absent players isn't a bad idea.]

  • 04:32 PM - 5ekyu quoted jasper in post Resurrection Complications
I had players upset with the death tax of a level or more lose, and the con lost you got from being raised in 1E. I had players who I was happy if they played the same pc 4 sessions in a row. I had players get upset even tf their PC was cursed for one session. I had a lot of bad players at my table. The death tax and level lost slows down the group a little. The group now has to go into protect the weakest link mode. The death tax only works if everyone agrees to it. However unlike a chunk of DMs here, I never had a stable group where I could do interesting Campaign add ons. So the death tax will only work if 1 DM and the group buys into it."The group now has to go into protect the weakest link mode." No, they dont. Especially if its not a stable group of players in a campaign. Making "if I die" more serious to "me" does not make me want to spend resources in crisis to save others... The exact opposite if those resources might kerp me alive later. Also, they can choose to protect the...
  • 03:20 PM - Blue quoted jasper in post Resurrection Complications
I disagree with the penalty. I did it for decades. If didn't tick off the player, it ticked off the player's spouse, or just slowed down the game while the pc had to catch up. Also I never really had a steady group due their jobs(etc) so it was harming the infrequent players. You say that you have a problem with the concept of a penalty, but none of your examples address the penalty. There is no penalty for keeping your character, just for ditching your character to make a new one. Or are you saying that you had players regularly ditch existing PCs instead of raising them? I have played with players who would drop a character with a permanent flaw if there was no penalty for creating a new character. So at at least some tables there's a need for a penalty otherwise it both (a) completely removes the effects of having the table if people will just avoid it, and (b) breaks down the narrative, all of the work put into that character (relationships with other PCs, character arcs, etc.). ...

  • 01:21 AM - Bedrockgames quoted jasper in post Worlds of Design: “Old School” in RPGs and other Games – Part 2 and 3 Rules, Pacing, Non-RPGs, and Gameplay
I disagree with Bedrockgames. My experience was 180 degrees off his. I had players in 2E demand to use splat books with most of the group supporting them. I grew a backbone when 3E came out. "Core or the Door" was my motto. If was not in the PHB you could not bring to the table. But your example though, you had a personal change in how you handled these situations. I pretty much handled it the same between both editions, I just found players were much more resistant to not allowing the various Complete books material. However my approach wouldn't have been 'core or the door'. I have a style of play I prefer, but a game group is made up of many people. If there are six people in the room and I am the only person who wants to play a game where the campaign options are limited, I have no problem adjusting. Different story if five people want more limits and only one player wants no limits.

I disagree with @Blue about the replacement level. I would say avg of party or equal to lowest level. Just looking for clarification, are you disagreeing with the specific level-1 I posted, or are you disagreeing with the concept that there needs to be some penalty for creating a new character otherwise there are players who will always sidestep the chance for resurrection penalties, to the detriment of the game in other ways.
