*shrugs* no there is, of course, no right or wrong way to play unless someone at the table is being hurt. Part of it is that they don't worry about rules. Ever see then haggle or debate a rule interpretation? Do they get caught up in the minutia? Nope, they worry about the story and the fun, not little stuff. If you are like me and have played other editions, especially years of 3/3.5 then...

I use FG. Did a pretty in depth set of research and evaluation when I made my decision in May 2015. Still happy with my choice. I use FG in all three situations regularly. As said, in a mixed environment it's nice to have a webcam for video of the people, but not required. Be aware, last time I checked Roll20 still not have all the WotC 5E products available. Emerald Enclave want Evil Jasper to take over the outpost. All factions want Mad Morrus the Merry Monk removed as commander of outpost. Season 8 may see some changes to the magic item purchasing. From Facebook post. You do NOT get a free faction change to existing pcs. So you loste all faction points if you change.

How do you explain in-game the lack of a magic item economy of any kind? I ask as I've yet to hear an explanation that makes logical in-game sense. After the 3rd age, the fourth age fell upon the world. Magic items grew from trees, magic wal-marts grew in small towns and large cities, golf bags of unmeasured sizes were needed to haul magic items to kill certain monsters. Even the small combats...

    1. Giants. You could add their CR Level to the damage. So a hill giant add +5 damage to any hit. Or you just add their strength stat as damage. so +21 to the hit. Note this will be a special add type of damage not available to the pcs. 3. Is just flavor. Your pc wants a sword master make a +1 sword. go collect x,y, and z damage.

  • 02:52 PM - lowkey13 mentioned jasper in post Harassment Policies: New Allegations Show More Work To Be Done
You seem upset. Are you sure you're not just being hysterical and blowing innocent comments out of proportion? Long thread. Catching up. I'm just going to point this out; as much as I hate to agree with @jasper in this thread, he has a point here. I really hate trolls. I hate the trolls that invaded this thread (and if you read them before they were deleted, you know what I'm talking about). But I also don't like trolls even if they happen to agree with my point of view. What you are doing is trolling. You might think it is cute, or funny, or that the ends justify the means, or that it is completely appropriate given the number of evil, misogynistic trolls that have flooded this thread. It's not. For you to repeatedly make the same comment, asking for social security numbers, and to implicitly call people that disagree with you harassers, is a form of harassment. This latest comment that I have quoted is pure trolling. If you had been making those comments to me, I would have reported you for harassment; asking for people's social security numbers on an on-line forum is never appropriate. There are a lot of good, interesting, and substantive things people have said on this thread. Becau...

Literacy, or the lack thereof, and languages in general, is one of those areas where I would really like for the game to pay quite a bit more attention... while at the same time finding it to be a huge pain whenever it does. jasper and Eltab basically summed it up: language barriers serve as a roadblock that can all-too-readily prevent the players best able to (or most interested in) getting involved in a scene. And, in cases where the entire party lack the key language, they can completely derail the adventure - much like a riddle the PCs can't (but must) solve, or a secret door they can't (but must) find. (And then, to get round that the game provides a solution in the form of an easily-cast spell, turning an insurmountable roadblock into a trivial speed-bump. I'm not sure that's better.) With languages, I'm inclined to mostly handwave them - assume just about everyone speaks Common and just about everyone is literate... until, very occasionally, you hit a situation where they are not. For instance, the PCs might be teleported half a world away, and so for one adventure they then need to deal with a language barrier. Keep it up just long enough to be interesting... and the moment it's not declare that the...

  • 04:05 PM - MechaTarrasque mentioned jasper in post Stampede
I think this is a connotation vs. denotation issue. The dictionary definition (as seen at http://www.dictionary.com/browse/stampede?s=t) does not specify "open spaces", but does mention "frightened animals" (like those escaping the fire in jasper's post), but the connotation (largely from to Western and Tarzan movies) is of large animals on an open plane. This is useful since the DM should have to decide what kind (or at least how large) of animals are stampeding. If it is a bunch of big animals, I would treat it as if two animals attacked each PC every round, if it is a bunch of little animals, one or two swarms should do it, and if it is a mix, maybe one large animal and one swarm per round.

  • 05:46 PM - Quartz mentioned jasper in post How Things Get Lost IRL
The sword is a sword thing is a bit of a myth, military tactics changed a huge amount over 1500 years, You went from unarmored masses to hoplites to legions to cataphracts and then to Knights and then things like Tercio and Landsknect. Yes, military tactics indeed changed over the centuries, but the basic form of the sword did not. A sword from 400 BC would be entirely recognisable and usable by someone in 1400 AD. As jasper alludes, a sword is a tool. How the tool is used is a separate question.

  • 03:23 PM - KahlessNestor mentioned jasper in post Please remove Demiplane of Dread Story Award next season
jasper Your condescending tone doesn’t help any, nor do half your responses. Who cares what you gaming store schedule is? It's not even relevant. Do you know anyone who even still runs S4 content? No one. There's a reason for that. It's because no one wants to lose their character to a stupid story reward. I had 2 characters get locked in because I can't make it every week. It isn't just a portabolity issue. It's also a frequency of play issue. AL needs to be not just portable, but also drop on/drop out. Demiplane of Dread works against both of these core tenets of Organized Play. Story rewards shouldn't undermine the basic core of your program. Reward players who can make it, but don't punish those who can't. Luckily I was abke to buy my bard out of Barovia, but my druid wasn’t so lucky. I had to rely on DM mercy letting me go into DTD debt to play her at a con. Ad now I can't play her and get dinosaur forms because of the damn death curse, another poorly thought out story "reward". S...

  • 05:52 PM - Kobold Boots mentioned jasper in post Are powergamers a problem and do you allow them to play in your games?
jasper Replying to you this way as your quote tags are messed up so I'd rather be clear than sort that out. 1. Talking is never the best first idea with any problem or most situations. Figuring out the problem is. Reason: Talk without data is opinion and generally a waste of time. 2. If you don't like the person you're gaming with, that's the problem. The power gaming is secondary. 3. If you do like the person you're gaming with and he or she is a power gamer, then the solution is pretty easy. Do the stats, scale the encounters, you're done. 4. Best advice to DMs who think they're scaling things without doing the stats is, "Don't trust your gut" it got you in trouble in the first place and is why you're having the problem. Nuff said here because I offered help and you replied back with something silly, so I'm done with you. Be well KB

  • 03:03 PM - Tormyr mentioned jasper in post Super Monk Jumps
From the PHB "The effects of different spells add together while the durations of those spells overlap." So if you want a strictly RAW and there is no Sage info on this *snip* As jasper pointed out earlier, Xanathar's clarifies that the proper name of the effect is what is important for determining what stacks rather than the effect itself. So multiple jump spells do not stack, but jump should stack with Step of the Wind. Step of the Wind merely allows the monk to jump as well as a strength fighter at the cost of a ki point.

  • 06:13 PM - Tormyr mentioned jasper in post Super Monk Jumps
Thanks for the replies everybody. Doesn't look like there's a clear consensus or rule for this. My initial feeling was frustration at what I thought seemed OP. But some of the replies here have changed my mind to allow it at X6. Super Monk Jumping would be super cinematic. jasper makes a good point about both the ring and step of the wind requiring a bonus action. However the jump spell lasts a minute, so the effects could be combined on the next turn.

  • 04:02 AM - Yaarel mentioned jasper in post What is the best way to handle ‘magic resistance’ in D&D 5e?
Coroc I was wondering about defining 5e magic resistance as verses non-instanteous effects? So magic resistance is vulnerable verses Fireball, because the effect is instantaneous, thus the fire itself is nonmagical. This might require too much bookkeeping to look up whether any particular spell is instantaneous or not. Also, Antimagic Field negates Fireball too, so it seems even instantaneous effects are considered magical. Note, if 5e ‘magic resistance’ is simply a save advantage, then by definition, any spell that attacks AC, like Animate Object, bypasses the magic resistance. Ironically, the magical energy of Eldritch Blast attacks AC, so it might bypass the magic resistance. However Eldritch Blast is a ‘ranged spell attack’, so perhaps magic resistance applies verses ‘spell attacks’. In light of Gnome Cunning, and for the sake of simplicity, I am inclined to say, anything that attacks AC can bypass magic resistance. jasper Looking at 1e Drow magic resistance 50% + 2% per level. I figure, for 5e, advantage is good enough, and stays reasonably balanced.

  • 06:37 PM - Satyrn mentioned jasper in post [5e] Feats, what gives?
Again, That's just a sleazy player. Maybe I'm lost here, are people who optimize builds, with DM discretion and respect towards the game that everyone agreed to play power gamers, or are people who want perfect munchkins regardless of how the DM and fellow players think and feel power gamers? I don't think feats affect peoples choices anymore than stats or classes do. I think jasper's essentially saying that feats become a tool that -when layered on top of the choices made with stats and classes - provide too many choices for his preferences, that the accumulated number of choices reach a certain threshokd it creates an environment ripe for powergaming - and he doesn't enjoy that. So if you ignore his denigration of the style and preferences he doesn't enjoy, I read him as saying "Feats are the path to the dark side. Feats lead to choices. Choices leads to powergaming. Powergaming leads to suffering." Well, his suffering because it's not the style he prefers.

  • 03:12 PM - LordEntrails mentioned jasper in post The moneyer (a world building article).
Are you sure about that? https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Gresham%27s_law Normally, coins are worth *more* than their metal content. If they aren't, they get melted down. Even though it is a "Law" it is only a principal used in economic theory. That's not to say it is wrong, but it is also to say that it is not always true. As soon as the coin becomes substantially more valuable than the metal plus the cost to create it, it will be forged, which will then put pressure on driving the value down. But anyway, my intent is not to debate this. I'm not an expert on it, nor do I care that much about it to research it. All, Interesting topic, but I think that there is more thought and modern impacts being discussed here than most players will ever notice or care about. @jasper, I'm not offering. I thought you said you were getting (from source unspecified) a case of mini's for writing these articles :)

  • 09:56 AM - Lanefan mentioned jasper in post Dealing with a non-disruptive problem player
...t any effort into the game outside of scheduled game hours make it tough to run things for him, too (and I never ask for too much, and always give weeks to provide it.)You don't make clear whether this player has the time outside the game, or whether his life is particularly busy. If he really hasn't got the time, that's some slack you'll have to cut him. Every story has to be address his 'mercenery' motivation or it doesn't happen. The party can never choose to be heroic, as he just wants to get paid. This one is simpler. The party can choose* to be heroic-but-unrewarded if they like and let Sassy either come along or roleplay herself out of the party, who then go and recruit his new character. * - have some lawful type in the party insist on putting what the party does next to a vote. And if Sassy does come along, you-as-DM can always make sure that there's a reasonable haul of treasure to be found in process of Doing Heroic Deeds. It doesn't have to be either-or. :) Unlike jasper however, I'd suggest having a word with him sometime about trying a few different character concepts as Sassy sounds like it's getting old. • 06:46 PM - Hawk Diesel mentioned jasper in post New Action Type for more cooperative battles
jasper Hex only affects ability checks. Does nothing against Saving Throws. And yes, I agree that players can talk tactics and should. But if you have new players or ones that don't really know how to do that, the mechanics don't really support a team work dynamic. There are roles, and people stick within their roles. This is a way to mechanically support working together. As for the Tactical Action Surge (I believe that is the one you were asking clarification about with the tank), everyone would get advantage until the Fighter's start of their turn. Action Surge is a powerful ability. If a fighter is willing to forgo their normal benefit to use it, I believe the new benefit should be equal to the sacrifice, since a fighter gets a max of 2 action surges per short rest by level 20.

  • 05:59 AM - Challenger RPG mentioned jasper in post 6 Ways to Force Stuff on your Players
@Bagpuss : I'm sorry you didn't enjoy the article. The idea was from a friend and I don't think I fully did it justice. Because I didn't fully understand it, I ended up making jokes and probably not being very helpful. Your suggestions are excellent. I particularly like the geography idea for its simplicity and effectiveness. @jasper : Ha ha, I've done that a few times myself. I sit down and tell the players, "Here's what we're doing tonight, take it or leave it." Everyone always seems to be cool with that. They seem to object more to getting forced into things without any input from the GM whatsoever. @Hand of Evil : I really like these methods and systems. Particularly Action/Reaction which I've been using in my games for a long time. I really like the define good and evil suggestion. That's something I've never done before, but it seems like a given in retrospect. It's hard to expect people to follow rules when you don't even tell them what those rules are. Thanks for the cool ideas!

  • 04:10 AM - Dausuul quoted jasper in post Beholder's Anti-magic ray Question Can it be dispelled?
Can it be dispelled for a round? last session I ruled it could because it a spell effect. Creature abilities that are not spells can't be dispelled. If the ability replicates a spell effect... well, that would normally be an interesting question: Does it replicate it to the extent of being dispellable? In this case, however, the question is moot. Antimagic field isn't dispellable even when you actually do cast it as a spell, so it certainly isn't dispellable coming from a beholder.

  • 04:16 PM - Polyhedral Columbia quoted jasper in post WotC: Stop sitting on Rich Burlew's setting (you own the rights!) - publish it for 5E too!
I think they actually retained ownership of all of the top-three settings. So there's one more as well. Oh, you may be right. Great, then I call for both runners-up to be released. However, it doesn't follow that they have these settings just sitting ready to be used. The final deliverable from the Setting Search was a 100-page setting bible. This then underwent a lot of development before resulting in the 300-ish page Eberron Campaign Setting book (not to mention the line of supplements). The other two settings, if they still exist, would still be in that raw form. Still, if the upcoming settings are going to be short-ish PDF releases (like the Magic: The Gathering D&D PDFs), or just chapters in a multi-setting book, then gleaning from a 100-page document is doable. Similarly, the existing settings will need only a certain amount of work to distill and convert them into 5E. (I also think I saw somewhere that at least some of the ideas from RB's setting did eventually make their way int...
  • 04:13 PM - Oofta quoted jasper in post Hang Time - What if you jump farther than your speed?
Hmm at 5.8 seconds you look down. At 5.85 your feet start dancing for solid ground. At 5.9 your body below the neck starts falling and your neck elongates. At 5.94 you look to your best buds and hold a sign saying "this is going to hurt" At 5.96 You look back down and your neck and head start to fall. At 6 seconds you hit the ground. At 6.1 seconds a puff of smoke rises from around your body and surrounds location you started fall at. Whereas my characters ignore the law of gravity completely. After all, they never studied law. Or maybe they just don't look down? 99227

  • 05:53 PM - DMMike quoted jasper in post An Army in the Dungeon
Now I know some super detailed dm did use the charts. Aka We had 12 wagons of treasure hauled out of the dragon's lair. We made 2 gp profit. Funeral expenses are no joke, huh? Here's what I don't understand: when you're in close quarters, it's dark, and you're hauling lots of gear/treasure, it's virtually impossible to run away from anything (or make a reflex save) when you have eight hirelings also hauling stuff behind you. Yet today's players, as proffered by Matt Colville and witnessed by myself, don't want to run away or even face overwhelming odds. Why, over time, do D&D players slowly ditch their entourage, if they're becoming less interested in running away? Why not have more followers then?

BARF! The Gawds are not toys powered by their batteries( worshipers). I remember that article and it was one of silliest serious articles Dragon published. Clearly, that's a matter of taste. I loved that article, love the interdependence of worshiper and deity, and even used a thing in my 2e game where a pc found the shade of a lost god, became her sole worshiper, and actively tracked the mana he gave to her and she gave back. EDIT: There's a truly epic fantasy series, the Malazan Book of the Fallen, that really runs with this trope, too, though it isn't obvious until fairly late in the series just how much influence worshipers have on their deities.

BARF! The Gawds are not toys powered by their batteries( worshipers). I remember that article and it was one of silliest serious articles Dragon published. Its more complex then that, they do get powerful from other sources such as their portolios, if they make their portifilios more ascendant, say a Goddess of Love making sure more people fall in love then ever, that too increases her power. Still the idea of worship as manna (I prefer the term Ambrosia), for the Gods that feeds them and makes them more powerful makes sense, and has its sources in mythology (or at least a twist on mythological ideas). In some Mythologies humans were created to serve and feed the gods, so that the Gods didn't have to do that themselves. So its not a long stretch that the worship itself becomes how the mortals feed the Gods and mortals provids verious services to support their God and improve their interests.

If your dirty dipping multiclasser you take the worse. Its perfect for many cinematic and genre based games where two things take precedence over "reslity" 1 its the character that is the danger, not the weapon. 2 the choice of weapon is a stylistic and thematic character (cultural) or stylistic nod. It can work quite well for rpgs where crunch and fiddlies are less in spotlight.

If your dirty dipping multiclasser you take the worse. My personal preference is to go back to universal damage for all weapons like it was in OD&D and B/X (variable was optional). Then individual classes could get bonuses or even change the damage die type to reflect their expertise in the weapon.
