The great cartography and political borderlines never bothered me, and still don't, about GH. After all, when you have divination magic and can ride a hypogriff, it's not hard to make perfect maps. Sure, such connotations may not be something we Earthlings developed until far later, but for a fantasy world that has access to magic and aerial surveys, it makes sense that maps would be available...

To me, and I'm no expert at any setting, GH to me is about change. About turmoil and struggles between nations and organizations. Where FR is about the struggles of individual heroes and a constant return to the status quo (i.e. this is the way Ed envisioned it, so any changes always seem to be retconned and his favorite NPCs never really die.)

I agree with climax not being great. If I were to run again, I would have start hunting the players after they explored a room or two. The props did get most everyone into the silliness. I would need a cat plush for a prop if I was going to run it again.

Let them bring whoever they want. The bigger the entourage, the easiest it will be for the drakes to know they are coming and to either flee or lay an ambush. Dragon fear does wonders to an entourage of low level hirelings and beasts of burden. Scatters them to the wind, causes all sorts of chaos, provides plenty of dragon food, and makes the party pay out lots of death benefits.

Not really, to leverage the CT doesn't require the purchased DLC. But it does require you have monster stat blocks. But, for instance you can get all of the ~400 1d6 Adventures "Monster-A-Day" monsters for free in an FG module. https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?44066-1d6-Adventurers-Monster-Compendium It also requires the PCs to have populated FG character sheets. IMO the benefit of FG is not the map or the tokens, but rather the Combat Tracker. It's integrated with the map tokens and looks like an initiative tracker, but does much more than just initiative. It tracks hit points, AC, effects (shield, mage armor, ongoing damage, spell concentration, prone, poisoned, cover, etc etc) and allows the DM to run NPC attacks/action and save off of it. Also tracks...

(My search fu both in the books and online is very weak today) RAW: Ranged magic weapons, do they add their magic bonus to both the attack and damage roles? Magic ammunition, do they? Do they stack with magic weapons?

Ass 77 mentions, their is a ton more implied by creature size than just the number of spaces they take up. What all benefits and disadvantages are you also considering for size adjustments? Are you looking at some from 3E stuff like to hit and AC modification? Carrying capacity? weapon damage? Personally, I'm very weary of size adjustments, didn't like most of them in other editions, don't...

I like that in 5E a 6th level character can still do/accomplish most of what a 16th level character can and that their is not a wide discrepancy between them. IMO, it's about your expectations. If you are set in playing a 3E mindset, where bonuses of 30 or 40 are possible and that's what you want in your D&D, that's fine, but that's not 5E. Either change your mindset, or make all the changes...

Well, at level 16 I would hope I would have an end game in mind. But, no rush to get there. So 4 levels with at least 3 sessions per level, so it doesn't seem that close to needing to resolve things in a single die roll. But of course, no need to go to level 20 either, totally depends upon how the campaign is going to wrap up. Hopefully some BBEG and re-curring adversary or goal (godhood,...

I didn't have a problem with RAW, or your proposal, and was just about to go to another thread when the thought hit me; why are spell casters penalized more than martials with a readied action? It not like an archer loses his arrow, why should a caster lose their spell energy? Not sure what I think on all this yet, but I'm leaning to houserule no spell slot cost/loss.

Lots of good ideas, but what comes to my mind are these comments; - I think the effects should be a gradual process, requiring more than one roll with escalating consequences - I would think the device would not cause alignment change, but the consequences of use cause evil acts, which then results in your alignment changing because you are doing evil things - I tend to like the idea of blood...

I got that, but why? The max damage is the same, you've just increased the odds of at least one hit, but you have doubles the number of attack rolls. Is that increased average DPR worth the effort?

The damage output of a swarm already varies based on if they half more or less than half HP. So adding multiattack just exaggerates this. All you have done is half the damage but double the number of attacks, which is most cases comes out the same. Is that worth it? You could add overwhelming, but why? Just because you feel they should be tougher? The ability to hit is represented by their...

I put one per short rest, but that's not very accurate. My players are in Undermountain (old school, not DoMM) so they don't often find healing potions. When they use healing potions, they tend to use several because its a big fight and they are in trouble etc. But, they only use healing potions maybe once every 10 fights, but then they tend to use all the ones they have. I started playing in 80s so only bad zombies movies were in my head. They were stupider than D&D zombies. How about this save vs zombie plague. DC 5 + total amount of zombie damage. This is an increasing number. Get hit and the dm doing avg damage. DC 9. Second hit DC 13. DC only resets when a person is magically healed to their max hit points. Person turns in 1d4 days.

...an that of an English longbow so it might have somewhat better chances, but even the worst arquebus bullet will have kinetic energy 5x- 10x of a longbow. As I stated the cause of death was often not the wound but an infection. So main purpose of medieval armor was not to get hit less but to not get hit at all Why? Because of infection risk. Of course in the beginning longbows would more often penetrate the lesser armor but as soon as good suits of full plate were available at least for knights and nobility they would only get taken our by a lucky arrow through the helmet slit or such, The hail of longbow arrows might be stressing or irritating and might kill their horse or their worse clad underlings but the knights were close to invulnerable. I recommend you check up the vids of scholagladiatora on youtube this guy does talk a lot about all kinds of weapons and also missconceptions like longbow arrows or katanas cutting through hardened steel - they only do that in holywood. @jasper matt Easton also did some videos on the battle of agnicourt and longbow use ethere and how it did affect various troops.

  • 11:00 AM - Hussar mentioned jasper in post Burning Questions: Why Do DMs Limit Official WOTC Material?
...nvincing the group that this was a good idea. But, at no point could I simply say, "Well, either I run it this way or someone else runs" because, well, I'd be shunted to the player seat so fast I'd have burns on my cheeks. :D At the end of the day, I look at what makes DMing fun for me is knowing that I ran the most enjoyable game I could for this group. The more fun that the players are having, the more fun I have. Which generally means that yup, I'll put my preferences behind what the players want most of the time. If I can convince the players that my ideas are good enough, then, yay, I get what I want. But, otherwise, I'm pretty much stuck if I want to run a game where any of the players aren't interested. So, to use the Matt Mercer example. A DM who is unwilling to listen to what his or her players clearly state that they want, and adjust to their tastes, is a bad DM. DMing should always be about listening to the players and giving them what they want. To use jasper's example, to me it's unbelievable that the group would exclude a friend just so they could go eat Chinese food. That's a pretty dick move. That's not what I want my friends to do and I would never do that to a friend. "Hey, we're all going somewhere that you hate, see you later" when there are obviously other options available is unbelievable to me. That would be the last time I went anywhere with you. And, if I'm late coming to the car, you're going to take my wife home and leave me there? Yeah, number one, I'd be looking for a new wife pretty quickly if she didn't get out of that car and number two, that would be the absolute last time I'd associate with you.

jasper Sorry, but that is not the point, it is hard to find players, although I have my private group I would like to have a more established publically organized alternative also. So I am a bit jealous about the way it seems to be in the U.S., where you seem to have a lot more players, and the habitus that you can meet up in a game store to find interested people. This does not exist in that way in Germany, at least I am not aware of.

  • 10:11 PM - iserith mentioned jasper in post Missed session catch-up XP
...s what the guys flanking from the back are for. Do your enemies never have ranged or area effect attacks? All it takes is one boulder from that hill giant to take out that annoying gnat in the back permanently. So I call BS. Well, at least it's BS that these tactics would work in every game. Tactics cannot overcome the fact that low level PCs likely won't survive even a single hit or AOE. You may note that I did not make assertion to the effect that "these tactics would work in every game." You are attacking a strawman. I am not obligated to defend a position I do not hold. I really wish you would stop doing this. It makes conversations with you completely unproductive except to warn others who may be reading to be careful about engaging with you. And I don't know how much more of that particular public service I'm up for or how much more that point needs demonstrating. I gave that example to show that party cohesion and tactics play a big role in survival. That speaks to jasper's point about AL lacking in those things (or my point about that being true of many pickup groups) and it also goes to whether characters of the same level or disparate level are successful. Further, I have already given you ways to deal with hill giants in general. Look, I'm sorry that you and your wife's characters were killed. But there are a lot of reasons why that may be outside of having lower-level characters as I've shown several times.

  • 01:36 PM - Coroc mentioned jasper in post Sleep Spell and Chain Awakening
jasper two things about that, if some Mobs run the logic thing is to chase them they might fetch backup else, which does not improve the chance for a successful rest. The bad luck here was that the Party chasing ran into the backup. The goblins chain awakening - the unlogic part about that is - that the first goblin would try to either run and leave his buddies OR the other Option for the first gob awake would be to try and wake up ALL of his buddies, and NOT RUN after the first. Otherwise the DM is gaming the System. A quick Investigation / medicine / arcana check to decide what would be the most logic reeaction of the goblin would also be in order for the gob to estimate whether his comrades are asleep or dead.

But I also don't like trolls even if they happen to agree with my point of view. What you are doing is trolling. You might think it is cute, or funny, or that the ends justify the means, or that it is completely appropriate given the number of evil, misogynistic trolls that have flooded this thread. It's not. For you to repeatedly make the same comment, asking for social security numbers, and to implicitly call people that disagree with you harassers, is a form of harassment. This latest comment that I have quoted is pure trolling. • 04:46 PM - delericho mentioned jasper in post Where Do They Get Their Literacy?
Literacy, or the lack thereof, and languages in general, is one of those areas where I would really like for the game to pay quite a bit more attention... while at the same time finding it to be a huge pain whenever it does. jasper and Eltab basically summed it up: language barriers serve as a roadblock that can all-too-readily prevent the players best able to (or most interested in) getting involved in a scene. And, in cases where the entire party lack the key language, they can completely derail the adventure - much like a riddle the PCs can't (but must) solve, or a secret door they can't (but must) find. (And then, to get round that the game provides a solution in the form of an easily-cast spell, turning an insurmountable roadblock into a trivial speed-bump. I'm not sure that's better.) With languages, I'm inclined to mostly handwave them - assume just about everyone speaks Common and just about everyone is literate... until, very occasionally, you hit a situation where they are not. For instance, the PCs might be teleported half a world away, and so for one adventure they then need to deal with a language barrier. Keep it up just long enough to be interesting... and the moment it's not declare that the...

  • 04:05 PM - MechaTarrasque mentioned jasper in post Stampede
I think this is a connotation vs. denotation issue. The dictionary definition (as seen at http://www.dictionary.com/browse/stampede?s=t) does not specify "open spaces", but does mention "frightened animals" (like those escaping the fire in jasper's post), but the connotation (largely from to Western and Tarzan movies) is of large animals on an open plane. This is useful since the DM should have to decide what kind (or at least how large) of animals are stampeding. If it is a bunch of big animals, I would treat it as if two animals attacked each PC every round, if it is a bunch of little animals, one or two swarms should do it, and if it is a mix, maybe one large animal and one swarm per round.

The sword is a sword thing is a bit of a myth, military tactics changed a huge amount over 1500 years, You went from unarmored masses to hoplites to legions to cataphracts and then to Knights and then things like Tercio and Landsknect. Yes, military tactics indeed changed over the centuries, but the basic form of the sword did not. A sword from 400 BC would be entirely recognisable and usable by someone in 1400 AD. As jasper alludes, a sword is a tool. How the tool is used is a separate question.

  • 03:23 PM - KahlessNestor mentioned jasper in post Please remove Demiplane of Dread Story Award next season
jasper Your condescending tone doesn’t help any, nor do half your responses. Who cares what you gaming store schedule is? It's not even relevant. Do you know anyone who even still runs S4 content? No one. There's a reason for that. It's because no one wants to lose their character to a stupid story reward. I had 2 characters get locked in because I can't make it every week. It isn't just a portabolity issue. It's also a frequency of play issue. AL needs to be not just portable, but also drop on/drop out. Demiplane of Dread works against both of these core tenets of Organized Play. Story rewards shouldn't undermine the basic core of your program. Reward players who can make it, but don't punish those who can't. Luckily I was abke to buy my bard out of Barovia, but my druid wasn’t so lucky. I had to rely on DM mercy letting me go into DTD debt to play her at a con. Ad now I can't play her and get dinosaur forms because of the damn death curse, another poorly thought out story "reward". S...

jasper Replying to you this way as your quote tags are messed up so I'd rather be clear than sort that out. 1. Talking is never the best first idea with any problem or most situations. Figuring out the problem is. Reason: Talk without data is opinion and generally a waste of time. 2. If you don't like the person you're gaming with, that's the problem. The power gaming is secondary. 3. If you do like the person you're gaming with and he or she is a power gamer, then the solution is pretty easy. Do the stats, scale the encounters, you're done. 4. Best advice to DMs who think they're scaling things without doing the stats is, "Don't trust your gut" it got you in trouble in the first place and is why you're having the problem. Nuff said here because I offered help and you replied back with something silly, so I'm done with you. Be well KB

So this wandering monster of 4 Apes and Bard is brought to you by Pogre. Hey, Jasper! Thank you for your thoughtful feedback! I honestly agree with pretty much everything you said, lol. I'll keep these comments close as I continue to write more guides. Thank you again for your thoughts and feel free to shoot me a message if you have any D&D guide ideas you would like to see made in the future. I'm always open to ideas. Have a great day!

Considering Knock alerts everyone within 300 feet aka American Football field but does not deafen the party, why should firearms do so? https://www.shootinguk.co.uk/answers/noise-induced-hearing-loss-77421 This was studied on firing outdoors. Firearms discharged indoors are worse due to the sound waves being bounced back by walls and other obstructions. I see no reason why there should not be a temporary deafness condition or permanent for long term usage. If 77IM's firearms can be heard 600 feet away, what of the chap who fired a musket held up to his cheek? One could apply the effects of the deafness spell, save of be deaf for one minute.

One more guess. Hasibro will come to it senses and put me in charge of D&D. You’ve ruined it by spelling their name wrong. :(

I wonder if mythbusters ever tried the exploding barrel trick? Is gun powder packed tight enough in a barrel so it a BIG BANG or is just a BANG and you are ducking flying hoops? There are enough incidents in history where there was a "BIG BANG" as a result of stored gun powder, and enough still extent ruins where the damage from the explosion is observable in all or in part, that I think we can establish that for enough weight of dry, well stored, finely ground and well compounded gun powder, there is in indeed a "BIG BANG". It won't look like a Hollywood explosion (which is typically mostly gasoline), and it won't be as brisant as an explosion from a high explosive, but it will still lift the walls of your star fort into the air or turn your giant man-of-war into a pile of splintered debris.

Um "Chutes" does not translate to American. Please explain. He is American. That aside, he’s masking a naughty word. It’s not “chutes”, it’s something similar-sounding.

I started out with four person group Debbie Druid aka Deathfang servant, Ben Tennyson Druid aka Cupcake servant, Vydoc Fighter Squeak’s toy, Ignis Paladin new player Truffles mule. This was a weak team. After the second combat Keg G Blackwell sorcerer joined. This made a strong OOPS 2. A weak team of five. (People I seem to mess up the APL when be join after the beginning. A lot. Check my math always). The team is on the run. For the most of the day they have been being cash by the evil bandits of Black Wyvern. The are full due to some goodberr...

You too can help the endangered species. Just for pennies a day your can help restore the species. Send $99.99 to Jasper add redacted redacted. That is just 27 cents a day. Oh who are we kidding just send DMMike 1 issue of prophylactics, 3 lipsticks, 3 pair of nylon stockings, Mickey can pay his own way to vegas. You forgot heels. I could work some wonders with heels. Umbran: ask, and ye shall receive: good DMs are non-existent. Spencer Crittenden: not seen since 2017. Wil Wheaton: no Titansgrave since 2015. Looks like everyone's in a bad mood today. I could have called the thread RPG Trends That Undermine the Traditional GM Role, but isn't that a little boring? Seriously, (I know, hardly the thread for it, /and/ out of character for me) GM - and, especially, DM - scarcity is self-correcting. The harder the game is to GM, the scarcer GMs become, the greater the 'reward' for DMing. The easier a game is to run, the more players can hop into the GM role when there aren't enough to go around. The system will tend towards equilibrium, even if the dynamic seems to favor one or the othe...

You mention the problem itself. D&D has never been historically accurate in various ways. Armour is just one of worse and easily researched. Please tell me you will be doing a kickstarter on historically accurate armour. I will give a leg up. Remember the battle of Wisby. I thought a 5E version of an Arms & Equipment Guide would be really cool! Maybe I'll start a kickstarter campaign for it LOL! :) The biggest problem would be playtesting everything to keep things in balance. Another armor issue is the limited DEX mod bonus. Utter bull$#!{. Although heavy, with proficiency a character should be able to add DEX mod to AC, even if limited a bit. Our group recently decided after I showed them several videos of just how maneuvers such as rolling, dodging, running, getting up, etc. can be done to adjust armors: None: DEX mod unlimited Light: DEX mod limit to +4 Medium: DEX mod limit to +3 Heavy: DEX mod limit to +2 Sure, at low levels a AC can be huge adding DEX mod to heavy armors,...

  • 07:42 AM - CapnZapp quoted jasper in post Season 9 Adventure changes
Just read the Ghost of Saltmarsh documentation. If you meet Volo, um Aubreck's and befriend him, he is rich enough to pay for one spellcasting service per PLAYER for what looks to be the modules in the book. So no help for those loyal fans who are going to run multiple characters next season. With the the draconian restrictions on collecting loot and the transition away from gold to abstract unfulfilling currency, it appears the administrative side has entirely lost track of what makes D&D such a fun and popular game to play.

  • 06:50 PM - Elfcrusher quoted jasper in post How far is too far when describing what a PC senses and feels?
I do tell people what their character thinks. I not going to carry a thesaurus around with me to describe how your pcs is INITIALLY reacting to situation. This is just short hand as I trying to set the mood, etc of the encounter Jasper, " The smell of the rotting sewage gags you. You try your best to not hurl as the...." Sewer worker Steve, " it smells great. In fact I don't react to it at all. Quit telling me how my pc feels Jasper!" Dice hitting the table. Nat 20 (after Jasper's adjusts the die) Jasper, " Super Mutant Alligator with +3 teeth of sharpness bites Steve's Wizards right leg off". I do think it's worth distinguishing between theory (and ideals) versus practice. I'm in here arguing for never crossing the line between the external world and the character's internal mental state, but I'll acknowledge that in the midst of DMing it's easy to make small transgressions because, as you say, you don't want to stop and look things up in the Thesaurus. Is telling a player that a smell makes them want to vomit crossing the line? I don't know, there are arguments to be made either way. And I'm not going to interrupt the game to figure it out.
