  • 05:47 AM - grodog mentioned diaglo in post Question about Temple of the Frog (spoilers)
Bumpity bump... hoping someone has some insight on this. Perhaps grodog or someone else really old skool? Hola the Jester! Which version of the Temple of the Frog are you looking at?---the original one in Blackmoor Supplement 2, or the later module adventures from TSR (DA2 Temple of the Frog) or the d20 version from Zeitgeist Games?? Adding diaglo for good measure! Allan.

Question: Did @diaglo already pop in here and say "3d6 in order"? Did he also add "Str Int Wis Dex Con Cha"? If not, I do so on his behalf. Seriously, though. If the game is balanced for lower stats, then why not try some lower stats? WotC teased the "meat grinder" rules for their upcoming Chult game. Here's all you need for that: Roll using the above method. Caveat: you must have at least a 9 (or 8?) in the 'prime stats' (the one that determines eligibility for multi-classing) of the class you wish to be. If you hit 0 HP, you die. If you die, re-roll using the above method. XD

  • 08:19 PM - Remathilis mentioned diaglo in post Do you care about setting "canon"?
...ing change means that this cost should be considered! You know that your change is going to wreck someone's game, going to make playing with your Brilliant Idea (or with the Old Idea) more difficult. Your change needs to be worth that cost. Sometimes it will be anyway, but it's gotta be something earned. But this a catch-22; since you're ALWAYS going to offending someone with a lore change. I've been on this board long enough to remember the disdain 3e earned over "dwarven wizards" or how 4e's paladins no longer being tied to LG was sacrilege. I'm sure if I took a poll of ENWorld in 2016, both of those ideas would be embraced as generally good and positive changes, but they WERE controversial (and still are in some small pockets of the community) and took years to reach that level of acceptance. Your concern today with Monolithic Tiefling Appearance (MTA) is yesterdays Dwarven Wizard Allowance (DWA). Its last decade's Assassin Removal Disapproval (ARD). And further back than that, diaglo is still complaining that they added the "Thief" class.

I'm not sure why diaglo isn't here to make his catchphrase, but I'll paraphrase for him despite preferring BECMI myself: "ODD is the only one true game, and all others are just pale imitations of the real thing.." ;)

  • 03:32 PM - Ranes mentioned diaglo in post Module conversions: what would you like to see?
Started on Ro7P for 3e couple of weeks ago but work has prevented me from getting very far. As I said to @Oryan77 earlier in the thread, I've started with Uninvited Guests. I'm about two thirds of the way through but I have less time to spend on it than I thought I would, so it's going to be slow progress for a while. @ehenning, apologies for not getting back to you sooner. As and when I have chapters to share, I will do. Not sure it'll help you with a 5e conversion though (which, as you say, shouldn't be too hard from the 2e original). @diaglo, fancy seeing you here. I started this thread to ask if people still wanted 3e conversions of old modules. Of Sound Mind is d20 (3.0) already. Surely, if you want to convert it to OD&D, you just make everything d6 damage and you're good to go, right? ;)

i've been pushing for OD&D(1974) to be in print since 1979 when it went out of print. i have wanted new stuff for it for decades. i even bought all the other editions so i could convert the material for my OD&D(1974) campaign. diaglo "it ain't nostalgia if that is what you are playing" Ooi see my signature. Based on my research in the topic, there are a few retroclones that have resurrected that ruleset Oh and your signature is missing :P

Yeah, but revivals aren't fueled by the people already engaged; they're fueled by all the new people trying it out. Otherwise it ain't a revival.

3d6 in order. Str Int Wis Con Dex Cha d6 hps 0hp is dead Which works great! IF all of character creation is just as fast as this bit. But in 5e, that's not the case. So what can we do to make it the case? 1. Your class is selected for you, somehow. OD&D had attribute minimums to limit your class choices down to only a few possibilities. I think the multiclass requirements probably suffice for this one. If you don't actually meet any requirements, treat your highest stat as if it is 13 and look again (or alternately set your highest stat to 13 and try again...). 2. Your race needs similar limitations. I reckon we do away with the stat bonuses and just give each race stat minimums for their best stats (of 10+ their current bonus, so a high elf has to have a 12+ dex and an 11+ int) while human has no minimums. Same overall effect (ie - dragonborn are strong and charismatic, elves are dextrous), less analysis paralysis. 3. Spells and cantrips need to be pre-selected as well. Probably brea...

  • 04:25 PM - Prince Atom quoted diaglo in post Edition Aroma: Which one smells the best?
the xeroxed copies which were not made by any modern day printer but were that blue ink we got in elementary school circa 1973 of the handwritten rules via the Castle and Crusaders Society. high on life. high on gaming Oh man, spirit reproductions. That takes me back. For me, the 3E core books smell just like a pack of Magic cards, and I'm guessing it's the binding and the ink, maybe the glossy paper itself. I don't think I've ever huffed my 5E books.

it is like that guy next to you in stop and go traffic that you keep watching to see how you are doing in your lane. surprise he moved over in front of you after moving ahead and now you've lost track or sight of him. That guy was a half elf??? That would explain the glitter and leaf paint job on his car. http://www.circvsmaximvs.com/forum/images/smilies/expressive/scratch.gif

  • 09:46 AM - delericho quoted diaglo in post Coins and weights in D&D - the math doesn't add up!
nope. the issue isn't weight it is encumbrance. 10 loose coins being a pound accounts for you trying to keep them from falling out of your poorly sealed codpiece. Clearly we need a table for how well a PC's codpiece is sealed. On second thoughts, I think FATAL probably has one...

  • 11:08 AM - NewJeffCT quoted diaglo in post Looking for a low-level "PCs are hired by NPC" type adventures
Dungeon magazine from 1986- 2000ish was chockablock full of these type of side trek quests or similar. at the end of 1edADnD and beginning 2edADnD had a few too. you can easily convert something like I14 into this type or the early Marco Volo adventures in Faerun edit: maybe try Hordes of Dragonspear Thanks - I used to have the CD of the first 150 or 250 Dragon magazines, but I've moved several times over the years, so I no longer know where it is. :(
  • 10:48 AM - TheHobgoblin quoted diaglo in post Orc or Hobgoblin?
is this a d02 edition and newer question? hobgoblins are more powerful than orcs in OD&D and 1edADnD. that extra +1 moves them up a whole category with chances to hit. they are better armed. better disciplined as a group. better tactics in mass combat when playing Chainmail, etc... Yep. You missed the point, I think. When you see one, do you think to yourself "hmmm... does that thing have a +1 hit point?" in order to determine what it is. If you gain an Orcish follower do you say to him, "hold up! I got some extra gold. Let's get you fitted for some chainmail armor and a better weapon so you can become a hobgoblin."? I don't see many races that are separated solely by personality and equipment. You don't say "The difference between a halfling and a dwarf is that a dwarf wears better equipment and is lawful and more organized." So you don't need to take a look at a group of short people coming and say "hmmm.. how organized do they seem?" And particularly when you talk about P...

  • 11:05 PM - Barantor quoted diaglo in post AD&D 1E DMG and Monster Manual In PDF!
1edADnD is not obscure. millions of people bought and played it for decades Obscure in the sense that you had to try and find a book that wasn't beat to hell in order to play it. Now with digital versions I don't have to worry that half the pages have crayon drawn in them if ordered from Ebay... I've seen more 3rd Edition books on old shelves in used bookstores than 1E.... your miles may vary.

  • 10:18 PM - Tony Vargas quoted diaglo in post Plot points
edit: Dragonlance (1985) plot points had to do with major NPCs and PCs getting back into the action after a bad scenario. If we want to take it down to 'get out of death' cards, Champions had the 'extra life' about that time, and Top Secret 'Fame & Fortune' points were rather poorly doing so in 1980.

the poll asked a personal/anecdotal question. what are your favorite 4e elements? i picked other. it saved me money. i tried it but didn't buy anything. so i figured by not completing my collection of D&D it saved me tens of thousands of dollars. does that answer your question? Ah. You were threadcrapping. Understood.

4e saved me tens of thousands of dollars. Er...how do you figure?Because he didn't buy any of it. diaglo is perhaps the world's best known proponent of OD&D.

i was able to access from work. seems it wasn't blocked by my firewall as a gambling site today. no problem going to here or CM. none at all. still not blocked by firewall. and still accessible from work. :hmm: did something change to get rid of the "gaming" moniker? firewall at work until this week was treating "gaming" as code for gambling.
