My Character:
Dais is a gestalt NE Whisper Gnome Cloistered Cleric // Ninja of the Sublime Way (homebrew class), planning to become a Shadowcraft Mage. In battle, he alternates fighting with retreats, skirmishing about, using the protection of mist and darkness to turn away attacks, while befuddling his simple-minded foes with cunning illusions. To fight Dais is to struggle against an endless web of deceptions.

Dais was raised by a gauntlet cabal of Illumians, the only family he's ever known. He adapted well to their shady political schemings and rather enjoyed the Plane of Shadow, and thus was frequently sent on missions to Elirhondas, the capital city of all Illumians. He would often like to take lengthy walks on the plane itself, amused by its ever-shifting terrain.

It was on one such casual trip that he encountered the very fortress imprisoning Hypnogogia, falling into an endless well of shadow and believing himself to be as good as dead. It was in this moment that he took stock of his life so far, and realized how very empty and meaningless it had been. In this reflective state, Hypnogogia spoke to him and provided rationalizations that assuaged Dais's existential concerns. Hypnogogia explained of his own current situation, how he was the great god of shadows, and primary creator of the material plane and much of the cosmology -- and how all of that had been forgotten over millenia due to the betrayal of the other gods. Jealous and fearful of his demonstrated power to create life and reality from the black nothingness itself, they turned on him, driving him back to his home plane in their assault. Unable even as a combined force to subdue him for good on the Plane of Shadow, they instead sealed him away inside his majestic tower, cruelly turning it into his tomb. Since then, they had done a magnificent job of erasing his name from history and the minds of mortals. Dais found cold irony in the fact that the reality he had found nothing of value in, was in fact a veiled shell of shadow. Hypnogogia explained that the current world is flawed, he was betrayed before he could finish his work, and all attempts by the others to complete it since have only worsened his masterpiece. It was his goal to free himself, extract his vengeance, and wipe the slate clean to start over, the "slate" being existence itself. Deeply moved by this, Dais decided to pledge his life in service to Hypnogogia, and so his adventure began...

I portrayed the Ostalin teleportation beacon as their own creation, in response to the development of Ragesia's beacons. The Ragesians did it first, but then the other major powers all scrambled to develop their own as well. An arms race, of sorts. Would have liked more detail about the beacons. I'm just lucky, none of my players ever asked about making one (helps that their base of operations is already protected by one I guess) nor about trying to transport it. I think I made the beacons larger and less apparently easy to disassemble and move. Implying that the Ragesians had been in Seaquen for some time with Lee helping them out. This is similar to how I view the competing beacons. Like various iterations of the automobile, powered flight, and other inventions came out at similar times and, in some cases, cause disagreement over who did something first. A 6 cu. ft. pillar like described in the adventures would weigh close to 600 pounds. I figure the Ragesians had developed the technology r...

  • 07:19 AM - Tormyr quoted StreamOfTheSky in post WotBS advice needed (SPOILERS galore)
Did you know Stand the Heat is available as a 1st level spell in the new spells section of the campaign? I provided the info to my party before they even left Gate Pass, so they could prep by buying up the material component. The cleric, sorcerer, and (once 4th level) ranger could have always cast it some more (expanding it to the bard spell list wouldn't have broken anything, either) if they ran low on potions or supplemented each day so less potions could be used. If Torrent was with them, she could also cast it. They're also supposed to be able to find the caravan in the gorge early on w/ a ton more of the potions. So I mean...while they can't spend a month in there, they should have felt safe being there for up to a week. May have helped lead to less rash decisions. (agreeing to help Indomitability of course removes the problem entirely, but you can't expect most parties to do so) Anyway, answers below: EDIT: Oh, the campaign does cover them learning the song even if they kill all the Se...

  • 05:39 PM - thekwp quoted StreamOfTheSky in post D&D 3.5 Wealth per Level
I think the Tattoomancy feat was created by the authors specifically to have a way to equip all the humanoid NPCs without overloading the PC's with wealth. :) That's pretty good. Despite having seen that one a number of years back, I never considered it in that light before. In most adventures, you can reasonably predict what resources and wealth the party will acquire. Maybe they will avoid an encounter, or miss a secret door, but in general you have a fairly good estimate. One of the story elements that I find so appealing in War of the Burning Sky is the shifting nature of opponents and allies; how the war makes the party have difficult choices about who is an enemy, and who merely a rival that could be an ally in the next stage. In my campaign for example, the party ended up treating most of the Shahalesti spies as a rival faction but not outright enemies. Thus, they did not take any gear from them, baring Larion. This looks to be a theme that will continue in future adventures, and this ...

Finishing up! It looks like the best possibilities are either the night of Tuesday Nov. 8th (election day) or Mon. Nov. 14th. Please let me know if you could meet for 2 hours on either day (which? both?) Either works for me.

  • 03:03 PM - thom_enworld quoted StreamOfTheSky in post [Spoilers included] Half WotBS diary, half GM asking questions
Wait, can someone explain why Deception would "detect as magic"? Looking back at his stat block, he has the following spell like abilities: invisibility (self only), Suggestion, greater invisibility (self only) Anything else he has is Su or Ex. It would not show up to detect magic, none of the other stuff is a spell or spell-like. And the above spell-like abilities wouldn't be active on him when the party encounters him anyway. He has no particularly noteworthy magic items, either. So what is the problem here? Detect magic only identifies magic auras from spells and magic items. That's it. Well, there's this on page 35 or the 3.5-version: One seela adept was detecting magic and noticed Vuhl seemed to be affected by some familiar transmutation effect, though the adept thinks he might just have been sleepy that day, and be misremembering. If made Friendly, the adept (who starts as Indifferent) admits that the magic was like something affected by the Song of Forms. That's what starte...

I mean, most weapon enhancements are listed as a +1, +2, etc... cost, worth an enhancement bonus. Others have a flat cost in gp. So I decided the spines are fairest priced as a flat cost (+2000 gp market price in this case, so halved when sold), rather than a +1 enhancement which in turn makes it more expensive to add another property to the shield later. Well, the DMG has this for the Spined Shield, hence my confusion: This +1 heavy steel shield is covered in spines. It acts as a normal spiked shield. On command up to three times per day, the shield’s wearer can fire one of the shield’s spines. A fired spine has a +1 enhancement bonus, a range increment of 120 feet, and deals 1d10 points of damage (19-20/×2). Fired spines regenerate each day. Moderate evocation; CL 6th; Craft Magic Arms and Armor, magic missile; Price 5,580 gp; Cost 2,740 gp + 223 XP.

  • 09:22 PM - Mrpereira quoted StreamOfTheSky in post MrPereira's WOTBS D&D 3.5 Campaign (SPOILERS IN THE POSTS)
Glad you started this. I skipped almost all of Chapter 1 so i could keep my promise of starting the party at level 3. So it's interesting to see how things worked out in your game. I just summarized for the party what happened, making assumptions on what they'd have done, and beginning with Menash speaking to them and then their escape from the city. And yes, I love to point out when the party's being hypocrites or tease them that they're the real bad guy. Being a DM means having to take a loss pretty much every combat, you take what little morale victories you can get. :D Thanks, it is nice to know that people are reading it :) It takes quite a long while to write these posts, so it is a good encouragement to know that they are being read and appreciated. I really loved the scene with the Imp, and it meant that they really considered making a deal with Kazyk, as you can read in my next post.

One more thing, guys! Now that you all have lots of wondrous items being worn, can you please list them by body slot location at the top of your equipment list, or just after the magic arms and armor if you prefer. Include a line for each slot, even if you have no item for it currently (except for the Body slot, you can only use robes if not wearing armor, so leave that off if it doesn't apply to you). Like this (if you use mythweavers, just put the body location in the "Loc" line and put the locations in order at the top of the list): Arms: Body*: Face: Feet: Hands: Head: Ring1: Ring2: Shoulders: Throat: Torso: Waist: *Only include if you're not wearing armor Zayed, the anklets have a market price of 2300. You sell them back for half that, 1150 gp. The Enlarge Person potion price is a misprint from 3.0, I think. Back in 3.0, Enlarge Person increased your size by 10% per CL, up to 50%, and there was no mechanical effect till the 50%, so the potion was priced for CL 5. S...

Sorry about that. My internet was down the entire night. Maybe we can play Monday night? I will try to post the text of the conversation you were in the middle of so we can pick back up. Sorry, Monday's are taken. Possibly Tuesday night though. If it is going to be mostly RPing you can carry on without me if you like.

    1. Anyone got extradimensional storage beyond just a handy haversack? I don't think you could have actually taken all 7 of those full plate armors. 2. You want to "sell" the healing potions and have people buy them back that want them? Or have the whole party eat the cost, and if so...who's holding on to which potions? I would like to put a couple of things up for vote: 1) We should keep the potions as Party Loot. Zayed will probably need a couple with him at all times since he will often be out of range of healing, but if the party does not want to have a Party Loot stash of potions, then he can purchase them. 2) Healing wands should be treated similarly as Party Loot. We should pool our money/account for them out of the loot we get. 3) We should invest in an extradimensional Party Loot container as well. Or even a pack mule or two... 4) Since Torrent's role (and speed) usually keeps her with the main force of the party, she might be a good choice to carry the Party Loot. Although, qu...

Torrent isn't "my character" anymore. You guys decide what she buys and spells prepared. Or at least Zayed does, since you're the one controlling her. I might make suggestions or insist on something sometimes, but in general you decide now. I did say, being a follower of the water deity and back in Seaquen, she'd probably want one of the items related to swimming. Since Zayed took the armor crystal, I suppose that'd mean she takes the finned gauntlets. Looks like I've more work to do then...

It's ok, you didn't miss too much. Dealt with trolls, now the party's in Vidor, a little shanty town at the edge of the marsh. Hopefully your internet problems won't last. Sorry I didn't make it. They are supposed to fix it by Tuesday but who knows now with the quakke.

  • 04:39 AM - JamesonCourage quoted StreamOfTheSky in post The new title bar makes it almost impossible to read ENWorld on my iPhone
Well, it's nice to give the site ad revenue, but yeah, the bar is terrible. Is adblock for any browser, or just firefox? I'd prefer to keep IE as my main browser if possible. Also...I don't suppose adblock gets rid of the giant column to the right that squishes posts insanely narrow? That'd also be awesome to get rid of, but the column has both ads and content/topics lists, so I figured it was unavoidable. Morrus told me to use AdBlock when it looked like the bar was sticking around, so I think it's fine (I said I was waiting for a reply before using it, and site revenue was part of my reasoning). I'm using AdBlock with Chrome, but I imagine blocking the bar would work with any browser. Under "add your own filters", I put "enworld.org###multix". That got rid of the bar completely. I'm not sure about the bars on the site. They're only a couple inches on my laptop (with is a 15 inch screen), so they don't take up a lot of space. They're still there with AdBlock on, but the "Visit Our Sponsors" sec...

Zayed and Tiljann get 2339.495 gp each (and Zayed gets the Living Blade) Please post what you would like to "buy back" in the thread and hash out anything where multiple people want the same item. Torrent will be taking B's Mace, if nothing else. Note that the sell values are half the market price, so picking up items from loot is still a good deal if it's something you'd want anyway. Anything you pick up is yours from now on; if you later decide to sell it, you get the entire amount of gp to yourself for it. The town you'll be going to has a purchase limit of 2000 gp for stuff (specifically, 2000 gp in magical items/upgrades; a +1 longsword is available even though it's a total of 2315). Please figure out what you'd like to buy before the next session. Zayed is going to 'buy back' the +1 Chain Shirt, Hand Claw, and Lesser Crystal of Return. He will sell one of his MW Guisarmes, his MW Falchion and his Normal Breastplate. Purchasing - Anklet of Translocation and Healing Belt Torrent ...

...is this just for this week, or in general? Hopefully the former... I can do any of those nights, though I'd really rather not do Sunday night. I could do Sunday daytime, Sat. afternoons I'm busy. This particular week, I have Friday off. If I recall, there were other players who had issues with the weekend, though. I originally tried to move the game to Fridays and some couldn't do it. EDIT: As for Torrent, that's Zayed's request. I think Tansley alone is fine for the party's healing needs, he'd rather keep Torrent around and control her himself. I don't care either way, I was going to have everyone vote on it. If he does take over controlling her and she sticks with the party, she will NOT be anything like a cohort to Zayed, I would expect her to not have any preferences in terms of buffs amongst the party (other than perhaps her own self-interest), and she would get a full cut of the loot (as she will for this stretch of the campaign since she's been a de facto 5th party member th...

Awesome! I would like to know what specifically from Unearthed Arcana you will be allowing (or what you will not be allowing, whichever is shorter to list). I might pick it as one of my books, and if I do, I would want to use it for more than just variant class features. I can't think of anything I wanted to disallow from UA. Also, if you would have wild shape function as in the PHB (based off the polymorph spells) or in the errata'd SRD (based off alternate form). The key difference being that in the former, items you can still wear don't have to meld and become nonfunctional if you don't want; and in the latter, everything always melds w/o exception no matter what (even clothing). I follow what Errata I have (AFAIK, all errata for the books on my shelf). Any more details about the background of the setting, why we're together and totally not backstabbing each other, etc...? Still working on that. :)
