Megacerops it is! I guess the first question I have is if we want to keep them to the SRD dino standard or improve them a bit (like the SRD dinos should be). Looks like a gore (?) and trample SA. And maybe some kind of SA to increase damage or threat range during a charge.

Colossal+ is fun! If we're keeping Int 5, it has to be a magical beast. So that's my vote. :) We should definitely give it bigger space/reach, and I also certainly agree to increasing Str and Con. Did you have thoughts on that?

Just noticed an omission and a credit error in the Camarilla subsection of the Xytar entry. Firstly, the City of the Gods is DA3 not DA2 as indicated in the credits. Secondly, it should have a Carrying Capacity like the Xytar since it can also serve as a mount and packbeast. I've added "Carrying Capacity: Camarillas have a carrying capacity 4 times that of a Medium biped just like xytars. A...

Just noticed a couple of stat errors in the Dire Sheep stats posted in this thread. AC 16 with touch 12 that should be AC 13 with touch 9, a "Gore Bite" in the attack line and Weapon Focus in (horns) instead of (gore). The AC errors also appear in the Giant Sheep entry. They've been corrected where possible.

For the lockbite it's pretty much a limb-immobilizing form of Improved Grab combined with augmented critical. For the effects of limb immobilization it seems simplest to base it on a temporary form of a sever limb attack like our Murdakus conversion: Sever Limb (Ex): The tail blade of a murdakus is extremely sharp, capable of severing limbs or heads on a successful critical hit. The victim...

The disease is the easiest of the two. The original text is "Ten percent of all trollhounds carry a nonmagical disease of the DM’s choice. When a trollhound bites a foe, there is a 1% chance per point of damage of infecting the victim. During a lockbite, this chance rises to 2% per point of damage. In both cases, the chance to be infected is non-cumulative." That's way too fiddly, so shall we...

Well that's two out of three so let's stick to that. Updating Trollhound Working Draft. Regeneration 2 is fine by me. A standard 3E troll has roughly twice the regen speed of its AD&D version after all (5 vs 3) so doubling the Trollhound's 1/round rate feels right. Updating Trollhound Working Draft.

Well statswise it's pretty much just a light mace with optional Reach which is very weak for an exotic weapon. Spiked chains are better in numerous ways. Its telescoping mechanism must presumably make it a lot more difficult and complicated to make so it ought not to be that cheap as a simple staff or mace. When I think about what must be involved in its manufacture it sounds as or more difficult...

Yup, I was right. The original 1E Player's Handbook Bard (1978) has: The bard's poetic ability raises the morale of associated creatures by 10%. It likewise can inspire ferocity in attack, so hit probability die rolls are given a bonus of +1. Both of these characteristics require 2 rounds of poetics to inspire the desired effect, i.e. 2 rounds of poetics will raise morale and cause ferocity,...

  • 10:10 PM - Morrus mentioned freyar in post Hard sci-fi question: rotational artificial gravity space station
Assuming it's the right rotation rate, on the inner surface it'll be 1G and indistinguishable from Earth. Depending on the size of the sphere, gravity might decrease rapidly so that the second floor of a building might be noticeably lower G. Climbing ladders could be odd! If it's small enough, your head might be in perceivable lower G. With a larger sphere (like the one illustrated above), that effect would not be noticeable unless you climbed several floors at least. The centre of the sphere would indeed be zero G. Actually, we have a couple of pretty scientific types on the boards here, so @Umbran or @freyar might have more to add. I'm sure there's an equation or something you can use to determine the gravity at a given distance from the 'wall' for sizes of sphere/speeds of rotation.

  • 06:28 AM - DMMike mentioned freyar in post Battlefield 3 Unlocks the Secrets of the Universe
Well gang, I'll grant that 1) the laws of quantum mechanics and general relativity work really well, and that 2) you have much better understandings of these laws than I do. But I believe that the great unifiers are still battling it out, to see how the two laws (theories?) come together. And since I haven't heard explanations lately for where all the universe's dark matter is hiding, or why the universe's expansion is accelerating, I hope that we can agree that there are still some flaws in the maths. I'll ask about relativity first: freyar: how can every observer agree on what physical events happen, but not when they happen? The "when" seems pretty important to me, unless "when" is only a number on a clock. If you were in the open at 12:01 but behind cover at 12:02, then I hope I shot you at 12:01. Umbran: see the above case. If we can disagree on when getting shot occurred in relation to other events, and if another event is the arrival of a tank between you and me, then that tank might mean the difference between life and death. Also, shooter games do a certain degree of smoothing, so that updates to your game world don't look (too) awkward. If the universe runs on something similar to the Frostbite game engine:heh:, then there wouldn't be any obvious "please update" moments. Just tiny inconsistencies, like a single photon causing an interference pattern with itself.

  • 11:23 AM - Echohawk mentioned freyar in post Monster ENCyclopedia: Aarakocra
Thanks for all the kind feedback on my post! It was more entertaining than I expected to research the bird-men :D. This really needs to also be published on a blog -- even something as simple as Blogger -- for posterity's sake. I might give these a more permanent home on the ENWorld wiki eventually. But I'd like to cover a few more monsters before I do that. Also, posting them on the boards is a great way to get feedback on bits of monster lore I might have missed, like the 5e snippets Nikosandros pointed out. That gives me an opportunity to update them before moving them to the wiki. Are you planning to go in alphabetical order or as whimsy strikes? And just how many of D&D's many, many, many critters are you planning to tackle with this project? Covering them all could take quite a bit of time. No, definitely not strict alphabetical order. As freyar points out, there are a lot of D&D creatures. By my rough count, about 9000 distinct... um... "species" across all editions of D&D. Of course, one entry can cover several species (Aarakocra; Aarakocra, Athasian; Aarakocra, Malatran...), but I reckon that there are still at least three or four thousand potential Monster ENCyclopedia entries. With a strict alphabetical approach, it would be decades before I reached zzonga-bush. Fantastic thread. Aarakocra are pretty much confirmed, since they were mentioned by Mike Mearls in an interview yesterday as an example of the amount of information and story hooks that we will get in the MM. Arakocra will be tied to elemental Air, guardians agains Elemental Evil and enemies of the gargoyles that will be tied to elemental Earth. Thanks for pointing that out. I've had that Tome Show interview sitting on my desktop for a few days, but hadn't yet listened to it. I'm going to update the OP to include what we now know about 5e aarakocra from Mike...

Sorry I haven't been here in a while. Had a busy month and an even busier week last week (personal on top of work). The worst of it should be over tomorrow, but I am on a work trip this week, so who knows how much I'll be able to post. I want to get caught up at some point, though! No worries. I've been quite busy with work myself recently.

That all looks great to me! Are we done in that case? I think we're done, but I'll do a quick check just to be sure… Well I found a couple of typos (a UK spelling of "colour" and a "Disollver" that should be "Dissolver" but the only technical error I could find was I forgot to include "quickened" in their four 3/day quickened SLAs. Updating the Khalk'ru Working Draft. Anyway that's done, so we're ready to proceed with the next Kraken!

Well, I will take credit/blame for delays on conversions. I just have less free time than I used to, say 8 years ago. I like the spells for the domain. And the granted power, though maybe we should specify "(2 new bonus skill points with each new cleric level)." The "new" is superfluous. How about "In addition, for each cleric level you gain you are granted 2 bonus skill points that you can only spend on Craft skills." Updating Activating A Guardian Juggernaut Working Draft. At this point, I could possibly forgo additional magic items --- we were thinking about items that create juggernauts out of constructs or totems, right? The ones I were thinking of were fairly straightforward. How about I write them up and then see what changes you think they need?

I will agree with all of that. How does the 3.X version of the wu jen cast? Is it more like the wizard or sorcerer? Sorc casting might be helpful. If we need to, we can change around or add some spells or SLAs or even some special ability to the "rattle." Let me dig out my copy of the 3E Oriental Adventures… Yup, a wu jen casts spells like a wizard (Intelligence-based DCs and bonus spells and identical spells-per-day). They have different special abilities than a Wizard though, namely: Elemental Mastery: The spells of a wu jen are divided into five elemental groups: earth, fire, metal, water, and wood. When a wu jen learns all the spells of a single element up to the highest level of spells she can cast, she is considered a master of that element. Thereafter, whenever the wu jen casts a spell of that element, the saving throw DC is increased by 2, while the wu jen herself gets a +2 competence bonus on saving throws against spells of that element. This bonus stacks with the bo...

Sure, that works for me. Okay, how about: In Mystara Most if not all the weresharks in Mystara turn into mako sharks. These weremakos are a more magical breed than standard wereasharks. They possess the ability to summon sharks or even afflicted weremakos they have created. Tritons can become Mystaran weremakos despite being native outsiders who would normally be immune to lycanthropy. Air breathing creatures turned into Mystaran weremakos almost always die during their first transformation into a shark, either by suffocating as a fish out of water or by drowning far out to sea when the moon sets and they turn back into a air-breather. Amphibious (Ex): A Mystaran weremako in hybrid form possesses lungs and gills so can breathe both air or water. Gills (Ex): A Mystaran weremako in shark form has no lungs and must breathe through its gills. Even if the base creature is amphibious or an air breather a shark form weremako can only breathe water. Do you have some ideas on background and de...

Maybe it's just their own breath weapons critters are immune to. For the 1st-level spells, shouldn't the domain spells just work for her cleric spell slots? We didn't give her the ability to cast them as sorcerer spells, and there seems no need to since she has cleric casting anyway also. Dang it, as you pointed out I omitted the "Can also cast cleric spells as arcane spells." when writing what cleric spell domains she has access too. I was always assuming she had the arcane-casting cleric spell ability that many true dragons have. She combines the abilities of ALL chaotic dragons, and some chaotic dragons can do that (i.e. the Amber, Brass, Copper and Red). I'd just perform the following tweak: Spells: Pearl is a 20th-level sorcerer and a 20th-level cleric. She can also cast cleric spells and spells from cleric domains as arcane spells. Pearl has access to all the domains available to the chaotic dragons she rules (For the amber, black, brass, copper, amber, red and white dragons, these ...

Let's have them use flies with valgoss symbionts, I think. That's slightly more flavorful. Iron Will is fine for the human feat. Let's just go with Mounted Archery for the second class feat. It fits with Mounted Combat, at least. Let's give them javelins and the chitin shield as you suggest. Updating the Hanim Warrior Working Draft with the above.

That's pretty good! But I forget, do these have a usage limit per day? Is there something about only being able to use each ability once until accumulating notes again? It's been a long time on these... The caprine can only use a resonance power once per accumulation. To use a power again it must start the resonance gathering process, which wipes out its current resonance notes (which means it loses use of any resonance powers it has gained but hasn't yet expended). Here's the relevant passage in the working draft: The caprine can use a given resonance ability (as listed in the Resonance Abilities Table below) as soon as its resonance score is high enough to qualify for it. Most resonance abilities do not interfere with a caprine's accumulation of resonance notes, so a caprine can use a resonance ability and then continue increasing its resonance score in order to access higher-ranking abilities. The sole exception is the sound of death ability, which prevents any further use...

Anyone have the original monster text somewhere for these? Then I might have an opinion on types and subtypes. :p Oh I might be able to help you out there (whistles casually…).

Let's go for an 18-20 threat range. I think I'd prefer to go with a very large grapple bonus rather than anything else too exception-based. +20 would be fine by me, or we could even go a little higher. I think a Large dragon would have a pretty good shot at beating it, and maybe we want to make it a tad tougher. Let's just go for the 18-20 and +20 to grapple. We can always change it later if we come up with an idea we like better. Incidentally, I'm wondering whether the grapple bonus might be a circumstance bonus rather than a racial bonus. Hmmm. Proposed description: A massive kraken-like being I think we can make that a bit more colourful: A titanic octopoidal horror with a dozen tentacles as long as ships and a globular body the size of a building. The creature floats in the air as if it were in water. Its skin is blacker than black, its only colour is the red of its unfathomably malevolent eyes whose piercing gaze seems to see your every sin and weakness. Background: Khalk'ru the Dissolver is a terrifying extraplanar entity whose only interest in the Material Plane is its destruction. .... Khalk'ru is a terrifying extraplanar entity whose only interest in the Material Plane is its annihilation. It is known by many titles, including The Dissolver, The Eater-Up of Life, The End-Without-End, The Living Nothingness and The Lightless Timeless Void. The Dissolver is able to subtly influence mortals on the Prime Material Plane, creating insane cults who call upon Khalk'ru to destroy sacrifices or enemies and beg it to spare ...

I think I'd just keep the focus and ditch the material component. But we can make the focus relatively pricey (of course, the construct itself is the really expensive part). Like 1000 gp? That note works fine for me. I'll accept that. Updating Pilot Juggernaut Spell Working Draft. What else do we need on these? I guess that's the pilot juggernaut spell done. Now we just need the Domain, magic items and sample creatures. Oh, and the description & background. Gods, have we really been working on this conversion for four years!

I would go for the second description. And I like the background, but I think we need to edit to "In death, it dreams..." Updating the Paper Warrior Working Draft. I'll run a quick eye over it to check for typos later, but it looks done to me. So time for the next sword!
