While updating the Conversion list I'm noticing a few minor typographical & layout problems that I've corrected/amended. The Merrow Weremako has a stray "Medium Humanoid (Aquatic, Shapechanger)" in the hybrid form and has no explanation or description, so I've added "Aquatic Ogre Mako Weresharks Giants can become weremakos, the most common examples are merrow aquatic ogres who turn into Large...

I've updated the Conversion List with the six creatures we've completed since the last update (Mako Shark, Weremako, Khalk'ru, Giant Riding Fly, Priest of Ythog-Nthlei and Astral Figment) and added the four new conversions we've started (Reave, Trollhound, Mystaran Kraken and Megacerops). In the process I realized I put the Valgoss in the "completed" category too soon since we haven't finished...

Ah yes, it was acid cream pies rather than corrosive glitter balloons. It's been a while since I've watched the movie. Still, in 3.5 terms the pies could just be flasks of acid mechanically. Most of the humans are probably just 1st level commoners after all.

Updating the Pearl the Moon Dragon Working Draft. If we want to give her a lot of protection from evil spell use why not simply move it from 3/day to at-will in her Spell Like Abilities? At the moment her SLAs just match those of her "component dragons" so it wouldn't hurt to give her at least some differences.

Actually, disease special attacks tend to use the 1/2 HD + Con modifier formula for the Fort DC rather than the saving throw DCs in the DMG so if you wanted to give them Red Ache with the same DC we could. That said, I prefer Filth Fever since it includes Constitution damage in its effects. Updating Trollhound Working Draft.

Oh I guess filth fever is alright, just so commonplace. Still, I think the DC on red ache is too high, and the infection method for other diseases like mindfire is wrong. Lockbite looks pretty good. I'd go with the racial bonus for the grapple.

Sure, let's go with that tweak as you suggest but not "waste" sorc spells known with cleric spells she can cast anyway, unless we think she really needs to be able to cast a lot of a certain spell. For sorc spells known, are we ok with 1st level -- protection from law, ray of enfeeblement, shield, true strike, unseen servant 2nd level -- blindness/deafness, cat's grace, detect thoughts,...

Well the balloon dog in the movie never actually attack anything. All it did was bark and follow a scent trail. So the balloon animal could have been a single-use "track creature" magic item. It just needs a land speed, scent and a hefty modifier to Survival (track by scent). Indeed, maybe there should be a series of balloons of klowning that are a combination of figurines of wondrous power...

Well AD&D monsters didn't normally have Constitution scores, but if it were a regular PC having Hit Dice of 2d8+4 would require a +2 HP/die bonus - which is AD&D requires Con 16. As for Strength, +2 damage matches to an AD&D Strength of 18 (non-percentile). Maybe it'd help to compare them to a regular humanoid of similar size? An AD&D Bugbear is slightly taller (7′ feet versus 6′-7′) has...

I'd pretty much follow the original idea: So take the SRD Rhinoceros with its Powerful Charge SA and bolt on a standard Trample attack. Increase the HD to 12 and tweak the Strength up a bit - maybe to 28 or 30? I'd probably make them Huge as well, since these beasties are "elephant sized". That'd help the Trample attack. The Titanothere's Megacerops damage is higher in both BECMI...

Agreed. Magical Beast it is then. I'd go whole hog and honour the original's 150-yard long tentacles with a Reach of 750 ft. with tentacles. The beastie's body is "over 150′ long" so I fancy a hefty 150 ft. Space. Now the SRD Giant Squid has a body "more than 20 feet long" and has a 15 ft. Space so it could have a 120 ft. Space but that seems a bit small in proportion to the tentacle...

Well, I was just wondering if maybe they needed more HD to match what their offensive capabilities sound like, but maybe fading is enough of a defense. Let's go ahead with abilities. Con would be 18 or 19 by the listed HD, and Str looks like 14-15 with the given damage. Dex is probably average. So something like Str 15, Con 18, Dex 11, Int 10, Wis 11, Cha 10?

  • 10:10 PM - Morrus mentioned freyar in post Hard sci-fi question: rotational artificial gravity space station
Assuming it's the right rotation rate, on the inner surface it'll be 1G and indistinguishable from Earth. Depending on the size of the sphere, gravity might decrease rapidly so that the second floor of a building might be noticeably lower G. Climbing ladders could be odd! If it's small enough, your head might be in perceivable lower G. With a larger sphere (like the one illustrated above), that effect would not be noticeable unless you climbed several floors at least. The centre of the sphere would indeed be zero G. Actually, we have a couple of pretty scientific types on the boards here, so @Umbran or @freyar might have more to add. I'm sure there's an equation or something you can use to determine the gravity at a given distance from the 'wall' for sizes of sphere/speeds of rotation.

  • 06:28 AM - DMMike mentioned freyar in post Battlefield 3 Unlocks the Secrets of the Universe
Well gang, I'll grant that 1) the laws of quantum mechanics and general relativity work really well, and that 2) you have much better understandings of these laws than I do. But I believe that the great unifiers are still battling it out, to see how the two laws (theories?) come together. And since I haven't heard explanations lately for where all the universe's dark matter is hiding, or why the universe's expansion is accelerating, I hope that we can agree that there are still some flaws in the maths. I'll ask about relativity first: freyar: how can every observer agree on what physical events happen, but not when they happen? The "when" seems pretty important to me, unless "when" is only a number on a clock. If you were in the open at 12:01 but behind cover at 12:02, then I hope I shot you at 12:01. Umbran: see the above case. If we can disagree on when getting shot occurred in relation to other events, and if another event is the arrival of a tank between you and me, then that tank might mean the difference between life and death. Also, shooter games do a certain degree of smoothing, so that updates to your game world don't look (too) awkward. If the universe runs on something similar to the Frostbite game engine:heh:, then there wouldn't be any obvious "please update" moments. Thanks for all the kind feedback on my post! It was more entertaining than I expected to research the bird-men :D. This really needs to also be published on a blog -- even something as simple as Blogger -- for posterity's sake. I might give these a more permanent home on the ENWorld wiki eventually. But I'd like to cover a few more monsters before I do that. Also, posting them on the boards is a great way to get feedback on bits of monster lore I might have missed, like the 5e snippets Nikosandros pointed out. That gives me an opportunity to update them before moving them to the wiki. Are you planning to go in alphabetical order or as whimsy strikes? And just how many of D&D's many, many, many critters are you planning to tackle with this project? Covering them all could take quite a bit of time. No, definitely not strict alphabetical order. As freyar points out, there are a lot of D&D creatures. By my rough count, about 9000 distinct... um... "species" across all editions of D&D. Of course, one entry can cover several species (Aarakocra; Aarakocra, Athasian; Aarakocra, Malatran...), but I reckon that there are still at least three or four thousand potential Monster ENCyclopedia entries. With a strict alphabetical approach, it would be decades before I reached zzonga-bush. Fantastic thread. Aarakocra are pretty much confirmed, since they were mentioned by Mike Mearls in an interview yesterday as an example of the amount of information and story hooks that we will get in the MM. Arakocra will be tied to elemental Air, guardians agains Elemental Evil and enemies of the gargoyles that will be tied to elemental Earth. Thanks for pointing that out. I've had that Tome Show interview sitting on my desktop for a few days, but hadn't yet listened to it. I'm going to update the OP to include what we now know about 5e aarakocra from Mike...

freyar Yes that is what I mean. The colliding is in quotes because they don't really collide per say. What I was trying to indicate was that it was due to gravitational attraction and movement through space that galaxies approach each other rather than any effects of expansion.

Sure, let's go with that tweak as you suggest but not "waste" sorc spells known with cleric spells she can cast anyway, unless we think she really needs to be able to cast a lot of a certain spell. Updating the Pearl the Moon Dragon Working Draft. For sorc spells known, are we ok with 1st level -- protection from law, ray of enfeeblement, shield, true strike, unseen servant 2nd level -- blindness/deafness, cat's grace, detect thoughts, hideous laughter, mirror image ? I made the change to protection from law at 1st level. Though that one is a duplicate with cleric casting. I'm not sure what to do about that. I don't like burning the slot but do find it thematically appropriate. If we want to give her a lot of protection from evil spell use why not simply move it from 3/day to at-will in her Spell Like Abilities? At the moment her SLAs just match those of her "component dragons" so it wouldn't hurt to give her at least some differences. For domain spells, I think I'd mostly steer away ...

Oh I guess filth fever is alright, just so commonplace. Still, I think the DC on red ache is too high, and the infection method for other diseases like mindfire is wrong. Lockbite looks pretty good. I'd go with the racial bonus for the grapple. Updating Trollhound Working Draft.

That all sounds good to me! Updating the Hanim Warrior Working Draft. The sample creature is missing a description. How would you like: A sinewy human armed with a curiously segmented pole, a quiver of stone-tipped javelins and a shield that appears to be made from the shell of a giant beetle. Dressed in leather armor, the human's equipment shows no scrap of metal, not even a buckle or pin. Do you have an idea for background to finish this one off? I've gotten horribly behind. I don't think the Hanim Warrior needs any more background. The first paragraph of Valgoss Symbionts is enough for our needs. Just remove the "Background" placeholder before "Hanim warriors normally ride into battle on giant riding flies bonded to their own valgoss symbionts."

Well AD&D monsters didn't normally have Constitution scores, but if it were a regular PC having Hit Dice of 2d8+4 would require a +2 HP/die bonus - which is AD&D requires Con 16. As for Strength, +2 damage matches to an AD&D Strength of 18 (non-percentile). Maybe it'd help to compare them to a regular humanoid of similar size? An AD&D Bugbear is slightly taller (7′ feet versus 6′-7′) has the same +2 to damage bonus and a lower bonus to its HD (3+1 versus 2+4). Maybe give it the same Strength as a Bugbear but higher Constitution? A 3E Bugbear has Str 15, Con 13. Hmm… let's stick to the Str 15, Con 18...

In that case, I'd be happy with the versions of ferocity and morale that you have in post 1159. You could probably convince me of the boosted version, as well. ;) In fact, they can't use these too much, so let's just go with the boosted versions. Ferocity: A caprine with a resonance score of 1 or more can use music to inspire ferocity in its allies (not including itself), improving their combat abilities. To be affected, an ally must be able to hear the caprine play a musical instrument. The effect lasts for as long as the ally hears the caprine's music. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on attack and damage rolls. Ferocity is a mind-affecting ability. Morale: A caprine with a resonance score of 1 or more can use music to inspire bravery in its allies (not including itself), improving their morale. To be affected, an ally must be able to hear the caprine play a musical instrument. The effect lasts for as long as the ally hears the caprine's music. An affected ally receives a +2 mo...

Megacerops it is! I guess the first question I have is if we want to keep them to the SRD dino standard or improve them a bit (like the SRD dinos should be). Looks like a gore (?) and trample SA. And maybe some kind of SA to increase damage or threat range during a charge. I'd pretty much follow the original idea: It shouldn't take long. Mechanically it's a bigger version of a Rhinoceros with a charge & trample attack. So take the SRD Rhinoceros with its Powerful Charge SA and bolt on a standard Trample attack. Increase the HD to 12 and tweak the Strength up a bit - maybe to 28 or 30? I'd probably make them Huge as well, since these beasties are "elephant sized". That'd help the Trample attack. The Titanothere's Megacerops damage is higher in both BECMI (2d6 gore & 3d8 trample vs. the Rhino's 2d4 & 2d8 in BECMI) and AD&D (2d8 gore & 2d6/2d6 trample vs 2d6 or 2d4 gore & 2d4/2d4 trample*). That difference is accounted for if we give it a size upgrade, although I'd be happy...

Colossal+ is fun! If we're keeping Int 5, it has to be a magical beast. So that's my vote. :) We should definitely give it bigger space/reach, and I also certainly agree to increasing Str and Con. Did you have thoughts on that? Agreed. Magical Beast it is then. We should definitely give it bigger space/reach, and I also certainly agree to increasing Str and Con. Did you have thoughts on that? I'd go whole hog and honour the original's 150-yard long tentacles with a Reach of 750 ft. with tentacles. The beastie's body is "over 150′ long" so I fancy a hefty 150 ft. Space. Now the SRD Giant Squid has a body "more than 20 feet long" and has a 15 ft. Space so it could have a 120 ft. Space but that seems a bit small in proportion to the tentacle reach. Even 150 feet is one-fifth the tentacle reach, which is a ratio significantly higher than the standard giant cephalopods - the Giant Octopus and Giant Squid are both 2:1 (10 ft. vs. 20 ft. tentacle reach or 15 ft. vs. 30 ft.), whi...

Well, that all looks good! We should keep in mind to mark any Air descriptor spells. Agreed. It'll be easy enough to tag the Air spells with an ᴬ. Somehow it seems like the scream should have some kind of mechanical effect, given the monster name and all. Yes, the Veiled Maidens, Paper Warrior and Shadow Walker all had abilities connected to their names. Hmm… it may be related to the Child's spell selection since it has shout, wind breath and steam breath. If it bothers you we could always give it some sort of scream-related Special Attack or spell enhancing ability. Want to deal with the spells and associate abilities or the rattle first? Let's do the spells stuff first. That's the Screaming Child's preferred method of attack.

2d4 seems pretty reasonable for the bite damage to me. Well that's two out of three so let's stick to that. Updating Trollhound Working Draft. Regeneration 1 would match the original monster. That could be ok, but it's possibly a tad light compared to a 3.5e troll (or other critters). What about regeneration 2? Regeneration 2 is fine by me. A standard 3E troll has roughly twice the regen speed of its AD&D version after all (5 vs 3) so doubling the Trollhound's 1/round rate feels right. Updating Trollhound Working Draft. Okay, I guess we ought to figure out the Lockbite and Disease special attacks next.
  • 04:00 PM - Cleon quoted freyar in post Converting True Dragons
In principle, I think it would be fine to let her cast cleric spells as arcane spells. But I don't think we should put cleric spells in the "spells known" list, since that just reduces her overall spells available --- she knows all the cleric spells as a cleric caster already. What if we go with the proposed sorcerer spells known but allow her to cast any cleric spell as part of her sorc spells per day? Or is that overpowered? The main thing is that I don't think those dragon types you listed (which can cast cleric spells as arcane spells) also have cleric casting. Giving her the ability to freely cast all her accessible cleric spells as sorcerer spells is going way too far. So I'd just use the draconic standard "sorcerous clerical casting" rule but incorporate few or no cleric spells in her Sorcerer Spells Known list. i.e. the aforementioned tweak: Spells: Pearl is a 20th-level sorcerer and a 20th-level cleric. She can also cast cleric spells and spells from cleric domains as arc...

OK, I guess the mechanics on these are done except for the cost of the torag pole. It's probably close to a spiked chain in value, though the materials it's made of might reduce the value. I'd probably go with 20gp just because it's exotic, but 10gp or even less might be a better reflection of its worth. Well statswise it's pretty much just a light mace with optional Reach which is very weak for an exotic weapon. Spiked chains are better in numerous ways. Its telescoping mechanism must presumably make it a lot more difficult and complicated to make so it ought not to be that cheap as a simple staff or mace. When I think about what must be involved in its manufacture it sounds as or more difficult to craft than a repeating crossbow. Arguably more difficult, since repeating crossbows don't have to work reliably after you repeatedly bash them against an enemy. So I guess we should just pull a number out of the air and use it. I suppose 20 gp is as good as anything. Come to think of it, we nev...

Reaves seem like monstrous humanoids (extraplanar in the stat block) to me. I don't think they're associated enough with alignment to get those subtypes. Works for me! I'm not sure if 2HD is going to be quite enough; that might make them glass canons. What do you think? Glass priests? Reaves are Churchwardens not Canons. Hold on,no, those are Reeves. :p More seriously I'm fine with giving the base Reave two Hit Dice. Surely these fellow are going to advance by character class, so the tough ones are going to have levels in adventurer-grade classes. Anyhow I might as well launch a blank Working Draft.

Right! OK, well, let's go with your draft on using the abilities. I guess we should start with the lower level ones. I would say we leave out the War Machine stuff. Anyway, this is like a slightly lower-powered version of bless (just leave out the saving throw bonus), assuming we choose a duration. I agree the War Machine stuff is surplus to requirements. To me it looks more like a lower-powered version of the 3E Bard's Inspire Courage ability than bless: Inspire Courage (Su) A bard with 3 or more ranks in a Perform skill can use song or poetics to inspire courage in his allies (including himself), bolstering them against fear and improving their combat abilities. To be affected, an ally must be able to hear the bard sing. The effect lasts for as long as the ally hears the bard sing and for 5 rounds thereafter. An affected ally receives a +1 morale bonus on saving throws against charm and fear effects and a +1 morale bonus on attack and weapon damage rolls. At 8th level, and...

Well, I will take credit/blame for delays on conversions. I just have less free time than I used to, say 8 years ago. I like the spells for the domain. And the granted power, though maybe we should specify "(2 new bonus skill points with each new cleric level)." The "new" is superfluous. How about "In addition, for each cleric level you gain you are granted 2 bonus skill points that you can only spend on Craft skills." Updating Activating A Guardian Juggernaut Working Draft. At this point, I could possibly forgo additional magic items --- we were thinking about items that create juggernauts out of constructs or totems, right? The ones I were thinking of were fairly straightforward. How about I write them up and then see what changes you think they need?

I will agree with all of that. How does the 3.X version of the wu jen cast? Is it more like the wizard or sorcerer? Sorc casting might be helpful. If we need to, we can change around or add some spells or SLAs or even some special ability to the "rattle." Let me dig out my copy of the 3E Oriental Adventures… Yup, a wu jen casts spells like a wizard (Intelligence-based DCs and bonus spells and identical spells-per-day). They have different special abilities than a Wizard though, namely: Elemental Mastery: The spells of a wu jen are divided into five elemental groups: earth, fire, metal, water, and wood. When a wu jen learns all the spells of a single element up to the highest level of spells she can cast, she is considered a master of that element. Thereafter, whenever the wu jen casts a spell of that element, the saving throw DC is increased by 2, while the wu jen herself gets a +2 competence bonus on saving throws against spells of that element. This bonus stacks with the bo...
