So you think that Paladins should be LG and that elves should be Paladins while dwarves shouldn't? Yet elves are by nature more chaotic and dwarves more lawful, and your reasoning is you don't see the "stunty-race" Paladin thing? Wow, I hope that isn't the logic you use with you players. Why can't they play a "stunty-race" Paladin or half-orc Paladin? Because it doesn't fit your view of a Paladin? Why can't a half-orc be a LG Paladin or a dwarf be a LG Paladin? First off Arryn - they are talking about a bootleg copy of an old Alpha document of the PHB. It has been much changed from what we've seen in the previews. pkt77242 - I have to admit, I'm with you on this. Why is it that some DM's have it in their mind that paladins can be one and only one thing? I tried playing a paladin from a sort of aboriginal native tribe and the DM was over me like a dirty shirt - "WHAT?!??! No armour, no sword, you're using a spear??! That's not a paladin." On and on and on. It's the main reason I don't even bother trying to play paladins anymore. Just too many DM's like this.

Does anyone else think it's odd that the Hexblade's weapon can't act as an Arcane Focus? The College of Swords get this and Bards don't even have access to shields. The Hexblade has proficiency in them, but the only way they can actually use a shield is to take Warcaster. It kind of seems like a Feat Tax to get the full AC benefits of the class. Seems like an oversight. Has there been any errata regarding this? This should have just been baked into the core Pact of the Blade, to be honest. You may get a willing GM to rule in that favor.

I want to do Tomelock with Hexblade. I don't have that option.Yes, you can. Hexblade your level 1 choice, tome/chain/blade is your level 3 choice. Use a sword and shield with booming blade / green flame blade and you can go into melee just fine. You just need to juggle your sword on occasion. Or get shillelagh as one of your extra cantrips, and cast it on a rod. Or stick with shield and rod, and get a saving throw cantrip (sacred flame) to use in melee.

If you are playing a Pact of the Blade Hexblade then you can take the improved pact weapon invocation to treat your pact weapon as an arcane focus.

Seems like an oversight. Has there been any errata regarding this? Odd, yes, but not really a problem. You only need 1 hand free for the initial casting, and get a free draw/stow action. So you could cast a spell then draw your sword on the same turn, or store your sword and cast, and you can re-place hex with your sword draw. Paladins and rangers have to deal with this all the time as well. At worst, you will put your sword away to cast a spell, and have to punch at someone for your opportunity attack. But your probably going to cast on turn 1, and attack the rest of the battle, and enemies probably won't provoke even if you did. So it may...

  • 03:34 AM - Henry quoted Arryn in post Unearthed Arcana: Feats for Races
I love how the trend in D&D is that Humans are these incredibly versatile beings... Well most of the Humans I know can barely tie their own shoes... Where does this come from? I believe it's a Tolkien-ism, where in the books men were both fecund and could learn skills in short time that elves spent centuries perfecting, but I could be wrong. I just know it's a D&D staple from the beginning. Speaking for myself, I'm not liking these new feats either - some of the things (like the human advantage, the halfling group luck, and the flight for dragonborn) remind me too much of some of the breakable parts of 4e, and in some cases are so good I don't know why I wouldn't take them. (Dragonborn flight especially!)

I love how the trend in D&D is that Humans are these incredibly versatile beings... Well most of the Humans I know can barely tie their own shoes... Where does this come from? It's a side effect of giving each race a "hat"; a predefined culture/personality. Trying to apply one to humans would cause more confusion than its worth, so worldbuilders shrug and just go "humans are the flexible ones." They end up filling a niche of a lack of niche. The fact that in old Folklore this was how the fantastic creatures had similar personalities while humans could be diverse also helps give it credence.

When building an NPC Artificer (Thanks so much for adding that BTW) I noticed that if you take the Eyes of Minute Seeing the description in Magic Items is for an item that produces a Geyser of water. Do you plan on creating an option where you can add the extra damage from Thunder Monger and the like to Thunder Cannon damage? Nevermind about the damage. I forgot about the Mods Option. This is more than sufficient.Good catch for the Eyes of Minute Seeing, this was a copy-paste error on my part. I will have it fixed in the next version! The optional attack modes of the Thunder Cannon are mutually exclusive, so there isn't really a good reason to add them to the attack automatically. However, a case can be made for the Thunder Monger, as you will basically always be using that mod when you fire the Thunder Cannon. I will look into adding that with the new proposed "Context-aware attack calculation". This proposition has been done on my Patreon, where you can vote on which feature will ...

This is probably more a user error issue than a bug, but when I add the feat Martial Adept, I can't find the place where you can choose the maneuvers that the feat grants you. Any help from those much smarter than me would be greatly appreciated. It is unfortunately not possible to select a maneuver when you have only the Martial Adapt feat. The sheet doesn't support additional selections for feats. So this is not a bug, just something that is not supported. If you want to get the text for the different maneuvers automatically generated, I would recommend taking a second sheet, making a blademaster with it, and selecting some maneuvers. You can then copy-paste the text from the third page notes section to the other sheet.

I put on Critical Role while working and I usually don't even have the video up. Yeah, I may miss the occasional sight-gag, but D&D is theater of the mind after all. This may or may not be possible depending on your job, but it helps me get through the day. For this, I think I would rather just listen to a pod cast created with audio in mind. Gods Fall is an example of wonderfully produced pod cast. I've put it aside for now, but I still recommend it to people. Currently, my main pod cast that I listen to when cleaning, mowing the lawn, etc. is 'Welcome to the Magic Kingdom', which is not a DnD or game play pod cast, it is a improv group playing the part of a guy from earth that fell through a portal into a fantasy world and does interviews at the "Magic Tavern" with his co-hosts Chunttttttt (yes, spelled with seven "t"s) a talking badger and Usidore the Blue, a wizard.

  • 01:26 AM - Oofta quoted Arryn in post What can Heal actually heal?
My ruling We got to talking at my table about what can actually be healed with the Heal spell. We all know that it heals damage, but it also can heal "any diseases affecting the target." So could it be used on an addict or alcoholic to break their addictions? No, addiction is disease-adjacent but is not really a disease. What about mental diseases like schizophrenia? I would say yes, there is ample evidence that many mental diseases are caused by chemical /structural issues with the brain. This is a silly thing, but if a character had a vasectomy, would it heal that? No, physically repairing that would be similar to reattaching a limb and would require a regenerate. Well, or maybe a Greater Restoration if you consider a vasectomy a "debilitating effect". :)

I noticed a minor quibble at the gaming table tonight. Your wording for the Tempest Cleric ability Wrath of the Storm makes it sound like it triggers off of any attack that you can see. Unless there is some errata out there that I don't know about, the attack has to actually hit for the ability to trigger. Thanks again for putting so much work into this. I honestly don't know how I would function without it.You are absolutely right about this and thank you for posting about it! I have clarified this in v12.81 of the sheet. Coincidentally, somebody contacted me about this very issue a day before you posted it here. It has gone unnoticed for almost two years, and suddenly I get two people within a days time contacting me about it!

Watch Critical Role on Thursday nights and learn from Scanlan the proper way to inspire. www.critrole.com Scanlan is hilarious. Riegel's ability to improvise to pop songs is amazing. I hope they have a montage of Scanlan songs at some point.

Sorry if this has been asked, but if the Tiefling opts for the Int/Dex bonus, do the innate spells from Infernal Legacy or other still key off of Cha? Yes still based off CHA. Devils tongue is a replacement set of spells which use CHA. Hellfire can replace hellish rebuke but doesn't change the spell casting ability

So it looks like the extra dice for a Divine Smite are rolled twice as well when a critical hit is scored. That's pretty cool, but I've noticed that you don't designate a hit as a Smite until it actually hits. So, even though it is major cheese, it stands to reason that every time my Paladin crits it would make sense to turn it into a Smite. Am I reading the rules wrong? Is this overpowered enough that it requires errata or a house rule? I'm just curious if anyone else has come across this. I don't know that it's cheesey or overpowered. It's just a generally good idea. If you hold out for a crit, though, you'll be leaving a LOT of damage on the table when you're just regular-hitting. So there's some trade-off.

Forgive me because I have been a little out of the loop for a while, but I've seen numerous allusions to a "Forbidden Text." What is everyone talking about? Someone leaked a copy of an internal playtest they did around February, after the public playtests had closed. Sort of an alpha PHB, with all the classes and subclasses not in the final public playtest. You can google it if you want, but it's out of date and probably not worth the effort.
