What's in there is very good. I'm just disappointed that it's basically one section of the main city. It's hard to get excited about a world-spanning city, if you're not showing it to me.

  • 11:19 AM - Morrus quoted Greatwyrm in post RPGNow Is Being Retired
That's what I thought. I was confused by the line: "RPGNow always presented the more "indie" face of the industry, with DTRPG highlighting the larger releases." It’s just how they brand/market the two skins. Same store though.

I never realized RPGNow was the "indie" focused site. Now I wonder what I've been missing. The same products are on both. They're literally the same store.

  • 05:38 PM - Jay Verkuilen quoted Greatwyrm in post D&D's Best Year Ever - But Hasbro's Goal Is For D&D e-Sports
If they license the D&D name to some game like League of Legends and make a pile of money from it being successful, why should I be mad? There's already D&D (actual) board games and video games. What's the problem with one or two more? If it means the accountants think D&D makes enough money to keep printing books a couple of times a year, that's *good* news. If that's how it works. Speaking for nobody but me, I'm concerned they'll stop releasing things I actually want, instead focusing on "e-sports", themed licensed products, board games, and other "let's take things to the NEXT level!", meaning things that are more mass market friendly. This is always a dilemma when a product moves from being a niche product to something mass market. You can see the same thing with lots of other media, with bands, etc. Parts of D&D has been through this before when cool immersive CRPGs like the Baldur's Gate series got their brand slapped on a console action RPG like Baldur's Gate: Dark Alliance. Of cou...

  • 03:06 AM - Yaarel quoted Greatwyrm in post Ravnica: Is This The New D&D Setting? [UPDATED & CONFIRMED!]
Well, according to Hasbro's 2018Q2 financial report, MtG is growing. Just searching for the word "magic" takes me to three references to revenue for MtG growing (up 14% in one reference). https://investor.hasbro.com/news-releases/news-release-details/hasbro-reports-second-quarter-2018-financial-results Skimming thru the link, it seems the 14% growth refers to a group of games in "Hasbros total gaming category". That said, it singles out Magic: The Gathering and Monopoly as having each experienced growth by an unspecified amount.

  • 06:09 PM - Magus Darkwind quoted Greatwyrm in post Ravnica: Is This The New D&D Setting? [UPDATED & CONFIRMED!]
Ravnica might not be the only setting that will be officially announced this year so there's still hope for Planescape, Eberron, Spelljammer, etc. This is what I'm hoping for. I've heard rumors that it was stated in some official capacity (Twitter? Stream of Many Eyes? Can anyone confirm?) that two setting products would be introduced this year, and that classic D&D fans would be very happy. Planescape/Spelljammer in addition to Ravnica could fit that bill with crossover appeal. EDIT: Didn't they say there were two settings they hadn't announced yet for this year? I knew I wasn't crazy! Where was this said, though?

  • 10:27 PM - ddaley quoted Greatwyrm in post Lankhmar Box Set for Dungeon Crawl Classics!
Well they are in GaryCon at the moment. They'll probably update the HTWAMTDS backers this coming week. Also keep in mind that most of the people involved in the writing for HTWAMTDS will not be the same people involved in Lankhmar. So, there is little reason that they cannot make progress on both projects. Nope, sure not June. Apparently they make good use of their time when they feel like it. The main book is far enough along that they can hand out some print copies. They had time to go ahead and start another KS project and respond to some questions there today. It's just funny that with all they've been able to accomplish so far, no one has had the time to answer the dozen or so comments asking what's up with the backers' pdfs. I don't have an axe to grind against GG. I hope the Lankhmar stuff is awesome and everyone gets exactly what they want. I just think that asking where the pdfs are when there are hardcopies to pick up is a fair question, and they don't seem interested in an...

The only KS I've done with Goodman Games isn't impressing me so far. The "How to Write Adventures That Don't Suck" book was on sale at GaryCon, but the backers haven't gotten pdf copies yet or an explanation about what's going on. Was it actually for sale? My understanding was that they were bringing a limited # of copies along for kickstarter backers to pickup if they attended Garycon. I'm a fan of Goodman Games & DCC and a huge fan of the Lankhmar/Newhon series of Fritz Leiber. So of course I'm in for this kickstarter. I hope it busts through all the listed stretch goals before all is said and done.

Mind Thrust - How did Dex ever come up for this? "Discipline attack modifier = your proficiency bonus + your Intelligence modifier" just like a wizard using Int + proficiency for attacking with a "Ray of ..." spell. That's clearly the intent. But technically, the attack modifier is undefined (and thus defaults to Dexterity), since Mind Thrust is not a discipline but a class feature. The class is poorly written here - not exactly a grave sin in a playtest document, but nevertheless something to make sure they fix.

and a pro-wrestling fan Wow. That's dorky. (Said only in the spirit of thread irony. No actual insult intended.) The thing is, you can never really tell what will set off somebody like that. For example, I was once asked directly in an interview if I was a Green Bay Packers fan. I'm pretty sure I missed out on that job just by admitting I wasn't really into football, despite living less than an hour's drive from Lambeau Field. I live in eastern Iowa and we have a number of Wisconsin immigrants. The Packers don't really have a fan base so much as a cult. For those not in the area, I'm not really kidding. I'd put money on that question being a litmus test for the job.

I'm suspicious of this. I worked at Walmart for two years and I don't ever remember seeing the toy aisles that orderly. In the Walmart I shop at, all that cool stuff (including all the magic and pokemon cards) are up behind a register.

Any chance we could cut somebody a little slack as this may not be their primary language? of course, a length of understanding is important in matters like this. i'm sure he'd have some funny comments on my spanish. the problem isn't actually arising from his english competency, it's coming from his forum etiquette which exists in any language. the benefit of a great site like this is the interaction with other fans of the hobby. instead of pouring over the books or sifting through google results, you can have helpful people give you tailored answers as well as personal stories and lessons gleaned from playing the game. there aren't any english translations of the game, so i'm guessing he can read english at the level of the books are written at. this is more than enough comprehension to not act like an entitled robot when dealing with us fine folk. i love talking about gaming, but maritimeo really doesn't make any effort to be part of the community besides fishing it for easily found answers...

I didn't say they were nice or that it was a genetic shift. I said it doesn't take very long to get interesting, noticeable changes. I suppose not, but changes in the expressed phenotype aren't necessarily strictly speaking evolutionary changes. That sort of thing can occur through real world polymorphism were the same population interbreeding exhibits several distinctive characteristics that allow it to engage in a wider variety of behavior (see for example Darwin's Finches). Polymorphic European wolves are believed to be the root stock of the domestic dog, which in its modern form exhibits all sorts of different phenotypes from what is essential one genetic breeding pool. Simplifying, imagine a species where it has for each different physical trait - length of coat, length of leg, length of snout, etc. - a set of 16 or so genetic switches that can be set to 0-1. In an average dog about half of these will be toggled to one or the other producing average expressed traits. Any two d...
  • 06:57 PM - Umbran quoted Greatwyrm in post Evolution in a World of Fantasy
You don't necessarily need the millions-of-years process to get interesting results. If you have domesticated pigs that escape the farm, about three generations of offspring later you're dealing with big, dangerous, feral swine. You realize that domesticated swine are not exactly small or nice to begin with, right? What you speak of has nothing to do with their genetics. That's learning and developmental differences from having to actually work for a living, so to speak. Take a piglet from that feral swine (if it doesn't kill you in the attempt to take it's young, I mean), and raise it in a farm environment, it will be just like any other pig on the farm.
