WotC will have the Alternative Cover core set in a cool box with a DM screen with some cool art. I love the alternate covers and how it highlights the retail stores. https://twitter.com/nathanbstewart/status/1018934799023501312?s=21 Note the older cover core set gets a gift box as well!

It does use preorder numbers. However that huge drop is because WotC didnít know how popular it was going to be and were caught by surprise and had to emergency print more. That dip is due to lack of supply.

WotC's slow trickle of social media teases continues. Could one of the two campaign settings becoming "available" this year be Eberron? Check out the background of WotC's Nathan Stewart's picture. Stewart confirmed in a live stream last Friday that we'd hear more on the 23rd in his announcement of an announcement of an announcement (and today's Unearthed Arcana has been delayed until then, too)....

I think they could still condense the story to a bit fewer episodes, but I could live with it the way it is, too. Luke Cage's first season was rough when they basically replaced Cotton Mouth with Diamondback. Diamondback was just a terrible villain and he just didn't work IMO. Luke Cage Season 2 seems to avoid the mistakes of Season 1 and remains strong throughout IMO. I particularly liked...

Not sure what this link helps with, that simple math can't do. It provides the adjusted XP without needing to look at a table and figure it out. There are other uses for it as well when building encounters such as easily cross-referencing the 5e monster list to fill out an encounter based on filters. It also generates random encounters. I didn't create it, but I use the hell out of it!

  • 11:20 AM - Henry quoted Jack99 in post Acquisitions Inc. Livestreamed D&D Game
I am a DM. I am supposed to be a rules lawyer. Difference of opinion on that one. It's fine to know and understand all the rules, but IMO a specific rule shouldn't be followed if the enjoyment of the specific group at the table is increased by not adhering to it, no matter how rules-intense or rules-light the system. Our home Pathfinder DM, for instance, recently adjudicated an encounter where one of our number had been washed overboard in stormy seas; My monk jumped in, tied off to a rope, to save them. Rather than follow to the letter the exact rules for me trying to swim back to the boat (i was a good swimmer, but only level 1) you could tell he spot ruled it according to my ability so that i had a fighting chance instead of it being impossible or needing a nat 20 every round. In the end we've recounted that story more frequently than if i had to make a new character. It's not so much whether it works in a game or not. It's more the fact that I believe that the Acq Inc games should sh...

It's not so much whether it works in a game or not. It's more the fact that I believe that the Acq Inc games should showcase 5e more than just showcasing a_random_fantasy_rpg run by Perkins. Point being, It's fun, Chris is awesome, the guys are fun, but I have a really hard time telling they are playing 5e, and that shouldn't be the case, IMO. IMO, they are showcasing exactly what is awesome about 5e, which is that you don't have to be stickler for the rules, you can wing it on the fly, and as long as everyone's having fun, it's all good. There was a time when AI was very much about showcasing rules -- in their first series of podcasts playing 4e, shortly before 4e released. And they were okay, but pretty boring, especially compared to later installments when they decided to forget about showcasing the rules and focus on the guys trying to crack each other up and doing crazy escapades. As far as showing 5e rules, there's no "there" there. Roll d20, add modifier. If an attack, ...

A martial arts bear. Seriously? Seriously. As in, perhaps before you shoot down an proposal in D&D as implausible, you should first check whether it's *already an established thing in the real world* - with, say, a keyword search. http://www.shengchikungfu.com/bear https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ri9D7tYNpi8
  • 03:24 AM - TarionzCousin quoted Jack99 in post Acquisitions Inc. Livestreamed D&D Game
Kinda weak :( I get that they are having fun (or at least some of them seem to have fun), but if you show off 5e, you should at least somewhat run things by the rules. /shrugThese games are not your usual D&D games. They often have crazy stuff, like mecha-beholders, incredibly dumb robots, and crazy NPC's. Oh wait, those are "normal" D&D games. But anyway, they seem designed less with the rules in mind and more with being fun for the players and entertaining for the audience. The players are all entertainers first and whatever else second.

No. Multi-class synergies have to make at least a little sense at my table, not just be the product of some weird interpretation of the rules as written. A martial arts bear. Seriously? Kung Fu Panda.

  • 07:14 PM - Dausuul quoted Jack99 in post Counterspell check ?
Sorry, but it makes no sense for counterspell to work. A reaction interrupts the other action - so in order for someone to be counterspelled, he must already be casting a spell, right? So tell me, how is he going to counter the counterspell? He is already casting one... Can't really cast two different spells at the same time.. Cheers I would say that reaction spells are designed to be castable in the middle of doing something else, even casting a second spell. It's a single gesture or word. With practice, you can work it in so that it doesn't interrupt another spell's casting.

He is already casting one... Can't really cast two different spells at the same time..I think the reaction technically happens after the spell is cast. If the enemy was in the middle of waving her arms around and chanting bad Latin, but you interrupt it by making one very quick gesture with just one phrase of bad Latin, then it wouldn't make sense for the enemy to counter-counter while trying to continue with the elaborate movements for the original spell. If the enemy says a word or two and makes a quick gesture so the spell completes and flies toward its target, but you interrupt the spell by blasting it out of the sky with your own spell, then it makes perfect sense that she could counter-counter by shooting down your Counterspell.
  • 07:18 AM - keterys quoted Jack99 in post Counterspell check ?
Can't really cast two different spells at the same time..Because...? It certainly could be the case that there should be a rule to stop you from doing so, but there's no real difference between casting a spell, then using Shield to avoid an opportunity attack as you move, all on the same turn, and casting a spell and countering someone else's attempt to counter you at the same time. The closest you can get is based on component restrictions. So make sure you have two free hands. Reminds me of a cool casting game I used to play some years ago, where you carefully managed spell gestures in two hands at once in order to perform a variety of spells.

  • 07:28 AM - Celtavian quoted Jack99 in post Experience with Legendary Resistance: How is it working for you?
IME (players are level 12, almost 13) this is how it is. The solo/legendary monsters work (very) well, and can hold their own against a party. If they are truly alone, you do need a monster of a CR that is above that of the characters, but you do not need to go outside the xp/encounter guidelines in order to create a great combat. We have had (at least) 3 legendary fights, one with a dragon, one with a beholder and one against a fey hag based on one of the sphinxes from the MM. All fights have been extremely close, and in all fights the spell-caster in the party has had a decisive role, without completely dominating the fight. One fight he was buffing the melees and dispelling darknesses, in the other he used wall of force to prevent a TPK and allow the group to regroup and heal a bit and in the last fight, he.. well now that I think about it, I can't quite remember. So yes, there are some tendencies towards spell-casters struggling somewhat with those kind of fights. Or perhaps, it would...

Pathfinder only came about because WotC left 3.5 behind. If they stick with 5e and develop and evolve it instead, I doubt another Pathfinder could ever arise. It may have come about because WotC left 3.5 behind, but it grew into the big dog by putting out great material and making smart marketing decisions. That is what ultimately won the day. That competition for the gaming dollar is still there. I think it makes games better. WotC has to put out good material or they'll falter. They have to make smart marketing decisions and manage their finances efficiently. I don't see why they wouldn't welcome the competition, if they're up to making a high quality product that can compete. I think WotC should be monitoring 5E closely ready to make changes if major problems pop up with the game, just like Paizo did in the beginning and does to some degree now. So far my group and I like 5E. Our money for the moment is moving from Paizo to 5E. If WotC falters, we'll look elsewhere. Our one conc...

  • 06:39 PM - Mercurius quoted Jack99 in post Gamehole Con Live Tweeting Perkins Panel
What jumped out at me was the phrase: That's interesting as comics are at the heart of Disney's Marvel strategy as they mine the comics for characters, ideas, and storylines. However, they do so in a way that offers almost zero support to the comics themselves. The comics are mostly left on their own, struggling to make ends meet and continually having to reboot or pull events and stunts to maintain their dwindling fanbase and expected sales numbers. Meanwhile, the companies put restrictions on the books, like not creating any new mutant characters in the XBooks to avoid giving Fox more characters they can work with for those movies. And even ending the Fantastic Four comic to avoid giving the movie tie-in support (which suggests the people in charge don't know the comic business that well, as the comics have always relied on the movies to drive demand for the comics and boost sales...) The comics are at the heart of Marvel but they're really there for nostalgia purposes as they no long...

Wow, some great news there: OGL, Hollywood interest, another monster book eventually, and something not mentioned yet - great sales figures. I seriously doubt the 5e license will be the exact same as the 3e OGL. There's no way they want another Pathfinder. That said, I don't know what the right answer is. But... Pathfinder only came about because WotC left 3.5 behind. If they stick with 5e and develop and evolve it instead, I doubt another Pathfinder could ever arise. This. You took the words out of my mouth, although I would take it a step forward: Pathfinder came out not only because WotC left 3.5 behind, but because 4E didn't have the broad appeal they hoped for. A large chunk of the community wanted a more traditional game; couple this with the OGL and you have a context ripe not only for Pathfinder, but the OSR. Although I think it is more accurate to say that the birth year, or re-birth year, of the OSR was with Dragonsfoot in 1999 and then gained momentum with Dungeon ...

Sounds interesting. Would you mind sharing those? Heritages: players may select one Heritage during character creation (in addition to a background from the PHB). Angelic: one of your ancestors was an angel. This heritage gives you +1 to your Wisdom or Charisma. Characters with this feat have gold or silvery eyes. Draconic: one of your ancestors was a dragon. This heritage gives you +l to Strength and a resistance to cold or fire. Characters with this feat have icy-blue or red eyes. Dwarven: one of your ancestors was a dwarf. This heritage gives you +1 to Constitution and 60' darkvision. Characters with this feat are stocky. Elven: one of your ancestors was an elf. This heritage gives you +l to Dexterity or Charisma and reduces your full rest time to 4 hours a day. Characters with this feat are slim and fair. Fiendish: one of your ancestors was a demon. This heritage gives you +l to Intelligence and resistance to fire or acid. Characters with this feat have orange or...

Sounds interesting. Would you mind sharing those? I would also like to hear more about this. All these amazing ideas are really making me wish I had more time to put stuff like this together! As it stands I barely have enough time to put together even a basic dungeon crawl (and even then I need to pull help from these boards: http://www.enworld.org/forum/showthread.php?368757-Help-me-write-a-tomb-crawl! ). So yeah, I'm just sticking with the standard Forgotten Realms races from the PHB, but removing tieflings and dragonborn. They just seem too monstrous to fit in to me. Apart from that, there are no truly "evil" races. Orcs, goblinoids etc might commit evil acts when under the rule of an evil leader but it's not an inherent thing.
