  • 10:48 PM - Leatherhead mentioned mach1.9pants in post How to balance combat when 2 characters are average and one is extremely overpowered?
Here is his Character sheet. Let me know if there is anything you can't read and I'll try and translate it for you. I am assuming you rolled for stats? At least, I hope you did. Firstly: Don't let him apply expertise on his attack rolls or armor. 5e has very tight math for attacking, and such a thing will totally break it. Secondly: Crossbow Expert only lets you make a single bonus action attack with a hand crossbow if you are using a one-handed weapon (which can also be the same hand-crossbow, it's annoying and complicated). However, this "Eagle Crossbow" Looks to be a +1 Heavy Crossbow, which is a heavy two-handed weapon. There are a slew of problems with this: He can't use the bonus action to attack. I am assuming he is dual wielding to get three attacks, which is flat out impossible with ranged weapons of any kind, even throwing daggers. A Halfing can't even hold a Heavy Crossbow without suffering from Disadvantage when attacking. Unless he isn't a halfling, which means he ca...

  • 05:05 PM - Rich Baker mentioned mach1.9pants in post Character Narratives Preview from PRIMEVAL THULE
mach1.9pants -- Hi, Mach. You've done a good job of reminding me that not every table plays like my table plays. We'll take another look at the wording on those narrative powers; easy enough to say "once per hour" instead of "once per encounter." We definitely want you to feel like a Golden Sea Corsair several times a day, which is why we want a strong ability tied to the narrative that comes up frequently in fights. And we're deliberately pushing the boundaries a bit, because it's a low-magic setting and PCs might be looking to make up for a dearth of items with a little help from their narratives. Even so, once per hour would do that. Thank you for pointing this out to me. I am always happy to hear from people who care about what we're doing! Rich Baker Sasquatch Game Studio They are 100% NOT the functionally the same thing. That is a complete error in the way 5E works IMO. 4E yes, 5E no way at all. I played an online game (as a Paladin) last night, we had 5 encounters and not one Short R...

  • 07:35 PM - Echohawk mentioned mach1.9pants in post Spreading XP around
There's an unfortunate tendency for folks to form cliques that consistently give each other XP repeatedly. While I sincerely appreciate mach1.9pants 's kind words, I'm not terribly fussed about XP. However, I am now interested in how to go about joining one of the above-mentioned cliques. They sound like they could be fun, and I'm clearly missing out! Is there some sort of application form? :p

  • 01:57 PM - Ruin Explorer mentioned mach1.9pants in post Interview with Wolfgang Baur and Steve Winter about their 5E adventures.
...g, RPGs would be a bigger hobby today. It's all conjecture, though, either way. Speaking from personal experience, I can say that the main reason I am a good DM is that I was taught by a good DM (and a female DM, at that, in 1989), who impressed upon me something that the DM advice of the period generally didn't - that the DM wasn't god, and the goal was for everyone to have fun. She also left me with an awesome hand-written adventure (that she never had time to finish running) that stood as a good template for adventures in general (a non-dungeon, to boot - I didn't run any conventional dungeon-type adventure for a year or so into my D&D career). Later I read really good DM advice, but I also read a lot of really rotten stuff before that. Even Gary himself gave out absolutely appalling advice (and advice that contradicted how he ran his home campaign, eyewitnesses say!) in books like his Role-Playing Mastery book (what a horrible book - even at 14 I knew it was horrible). mach1.9pants - Re: staring at the sheet - this was a problem even back in 2E, for some players who had a enough spells/magic items that they began to think the solution to any given problem was on the sheet. Strangely, it wasn't a problem for my 4E group at all, prior to Paragon tier - but at higher levels, when you get truly overwhelming amount of items and powers, it begins to become more of one. Actually there was one player who always had the problem (not a regular, sadly), my brother - who in 2E and 3E always played Wizards (and thus always relied on "what's on my sheet, how can I use it?" to solve problems) - he had real difficulties engaging with 4E - everyone else, including IT people, lawyers, bankers, etc. was fine. I'm finding the solution post-Paragon is more exciting combat environments - gets them thinking outside the powers box very quickly.

  • 10:41 PM - darjr mentioned mach1.9pants in post Is it time for a Printed copy of the playtest?
GX.Sigma Looks like those folks would print and ship it for less than $20. Sabathius42 the 400+ pages includes multiple copies and DM stuff, though I could do without printing that. mach1.9pants the lulu option always seemed like a pain, but that's probably just my perception, I'll check it out.

  • 09:39 AM - Abstruse quoted mach1.9pants in post The Final Announcement from The Descent Live Stream: Eberron Hardcover
If they update the PDF and release as PoD, it seems to me they've covered their promises. I have it on DDB, and hope to see it updated there, Artificer etc. And that's the problem with WotC not releasing any info. They spent all weekend talking up the PODs from DM's Guild and used the Wayfarer's Guide as an example, but then they say there's going to be a hardback for Eberron. It's not that they're doing Eberron specifically that's the problem, it's that they've already DONE an Eberron setting book in PDF and charged a lot of money for it. Now they're saying you have to pay more money without saying what you're getting for that extra money or what they're doing for people who already paid more than a third of the cover price for the digital version.

  • 11:57 AM - Olaf the Stout quoted mach1.9pants in post Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!
'track record'? This is Paizo's first crowd funding effort, the previous ones were by (admittedly endorsed) 3PP. I can't see this doing anything but going well. But it will be all in retail, so not a huge problem -apart from the coins type stuff. You'll pay more but that's normal. As S'mon said, the Goblinworks Kickstarters were totally all Paizo. I'm just guessing they were set up under a separate company for business purposes, so that if it failed (as it has), it didn't take the rest of Paizo down with it.

Traveller doesn't need a GM? How does that work? Because if nobody shows up for your game because they're too busy watching Critical Role, you don't need a GM.

But that still leaves use with no track record other than endorsing failed third-party campaigns. Look, I'm not trying to be negative. I want to back Paizo and I'm excited to look into some of the PF adventure paths I've heard so much about. I'm also not sure how well running this in 5e would go. I'm probably going to wait until there are reviews of the material and see if this shows up in my FLGS where I can page through it. For Pathfinder players, this seems like something worth backing. I'm just not sure if the same can be said for 5e players.

Traveller doesn't need a GM? How does that work? Several subsystems are mini-games in their own right. As with older editions... Character generation is a minigame. it can be played solo. Trade and Commerce can be run solo, if the player is fair about random encounters. Many players through the decades, including myself, have done so. In prior editions (I have 5.1 already, but haven't actually read it yet, but have skimmed a few chapters of interest), tactical combat and, in MegaTraveller, even full up major battles, can be played as tactical wargames. I honestly don't know about 5.1 - I have issues with certain choices, and use it only as a sourcebook; the areas I'm interested in. In point, in CT, tactical battles aboard ship were extracted to the Snapshot boardgame. Likewise, ship and fleet space combat was in prior editions able to be played as a 2p minigame; CT had Bk2 space combat as a minis-on table; a separate boxed game, Mayday, was a hex based version of same. T:TNE's spac...

Thanks for your reply, that's fair enough, I didn't even know you'd gone to a subscription model. I buy from steam, and have not kept up with your stuff. Just to confirm if I get the veterans upgrade, I still will never have to pay a subscription on the unity version? Yes, that is correct. You won't have any monthly or recurring fees.

Traveller doesn't need a GM? How does that work? Original Traveller has always been playable as a solitaire game. It's character, starship and system creation are dice driven and can be combined to form adventures one doesn't need a referee to run. It just tends to be more fun and creative with a group.

Traveller doesn't need a GM? How does that work? I don't think that review gets many accuracy points. I mainly included it as a curiosity.

  • 04:39 AM - smiteworks quoted mach1.9pants in post Fantasy Grounds Unity Kickstarter Has Launched
smiteworks Why is it those of us that have been supporting you longest pay more for the Kickstarter? That's an instant no thanks from me The 1-time licenses for Ultimate are replacements for not paying $10/month. After 15 months, they basically become free to play compared with someone who is still paying the monthly fees. Someone who just bought the Ultimate license outright hasn't yet recouped their value out of it. Therefore, we give them a bigger discount on buying a 1-time license for FGU. Older 1-time licenses should have a minimum of $240 saved value if they bought right before the cut off in Dec 2017 by the time FGU launches this December. Customers who bought when the Ultimate first launched will have saved roughly $810 in monthly fees. We think that is valuing our older customers very well. We still grant those supporters $90 off of the post-Kickstarter list price and essentially put them into a situation where they only have 6 months before they get back into free play mode again. ...

smiteworks Why is it those of us that have been supporting you longest pay more for the Kickstarter? That's an instant no thanks from me The Unity program will cost about the same as the Classic program. If you already have a license for the Classic version, you get a discount on the Unity version. If you have only bought your Classic license within the last year (and a bit), the idea is that you haven't had very long to get your money's worth out of it, so if you're willing to jump up to the Unity program immediately, you get a little bit more of a discount. Most of us who have been using Fantasy Grounds for a couple of years or more probably are so reliant on the program that we'd pay full price for the Unity upgrade if we had to.

  • 11:32 PM - Mistwell quoted mach1.9pants in post Paizo To Make Kingmaker Bestiary... For D&D 5E!
If the answers on the Paizo forum are anything to go by, 2E is very divisive. Lots of 'no interest in 2E no sale' and 'can't believe they're supporting 5E before their own 1E' posts. More negative than positive. But, I guess, most of the Paizo forum peeps are the most invested in 1E. Yes I've seen those. But I also assume the people happy with things tend to not post about it, they're just quietly happy with them. I have a hard time believing 2e won't do well. But...I am not positive. And this tentative 5e support makes me at least raise the question.

A Kingmaker hardcover compilation, I saw that coming. In PF 2E, I saw that coming. But a 5E add on and using crowdfunding, that's a bolt from the blue! I’m pretty sure Morrus agrees. He’s been dismissing my Paizo 5e pivot proposals for a while now :)

  • 11:16 PM - Celestian quoted mach1.9pants in post AD&D 2E Core Books Now on Fantasy Grounds!
An experienced DM, or one with a lot of supplements, that's not a problem, sure. But some one who only has the core books and picks up an adventure for 1e that had that sort of stuff will struggle. Not for long in the age of the internet, though! Well, that's why you purchase the content put into FG instead of doing it yourself. Even if this was straight 1e running 1e adventures the task of importing ToEE is monumental for most people, specially those with 0 tech background. For the adventures I'm converting it's done for the DM, all he needs worry about is getting players together.
  • 07:34 PM - Celestian quoted mach1.9pants in post AD&D 2E Core Books Now on Fantasy Grounds!
Oh I realise that, unless there's an assassin in it, then you'll struggle!😊 Not to hard to make an NPC with those features really. Monks are the same. I've been working on ToEE and while the 2e PHB doesn't have a monk it wasn't that hard to add the "monk" abilities from 1e to a NPC and call it a monk. They actually did add the assassin and monks in 2e through handbooks and other products eventually.
