Titus was groggy. It *had* been a long day, and it was late. But his friends had woken him and helped him inside in case there were more goblins out there. Averiel went behind the bar and found a dwarven whisky that had not yet been stolen by goblins - perhaps it was favoured by the Red Wizard and they dared not touch it. At any rate, Averiel opened the bottle and sniffed it. She scrunched her...

Sesto & Mord vs Ice Troll 2 & 3 Mord left the last Kobold behind and stepped through Kalorn's illusion to fire eldritch energy at the second troll as Sesto struck it in the knee with his mace. The troll howled and was struck by the eldritch bolt. It elbowed aside Sesto's flying spectral mace as it ducked Mord's second bolt. Deciding that the illusion was no longer effectively aiding him, Mord...

Speaking of the Chinese and the Polynesians, that's another thing that mildly annoys me about these ship rules. They're too Eurocentric. D&D nicely represents many different cultures. Rise of Tiamat has the Ice Hunters of the Sea of Moving Ice with Kayaks (they call them Kyeks, I think) and Tomb of Annihilation has a large, six-person Canoe for sale. I'd have liked to see a good Polynesian...

Their new prisoner hobgoblin was bound and brought in to the Jester's Pride common room for interrogation. Their old prisoner, the goblin Spogg, was discovered hiding under one of the tables. Everyone had quite forgotten him during the fight, which he was used to, being just a lowly goblin, and not a particularly smart or important one at that. According to Spogg, the hobgoblin was named Krugg...

The weapons and armour span a thousand years or more in D&D, so I'm fine with the ships doing the same. (Though I agree, we generally want to avoid getting too much past 16th century within reason). I agree that elves should be able to have slightly more "advanced" ships, at least when it comes to maneuverability.

A tiny amount of research has given me possibly SOME idea of where they got their notions from... but they came to bad conclusions. The Keelboat as MAPPED, is based loosely on the kind of Keelboat (Riverboat) that say, Lewis and Clark explored on. Lewis and Clark had a LOT more than 3 crew aboard. Meanwhile, the statistics seem to be for small watercraft, like Paul above says - a ship's launch...

Didn't we just get blasted with Dragon Breath? I mean, that knocks Aremus out from Full HP. (Which I'm pretty sure he was at, but now he's DOWN. 0/60 HP.

Mbala is the ruins on top of the cliff where Nany Pupu lives. Edit to add: It's somewhere between 20 and 30 days travel no matter *how* you go. The main difference is difficulty. The ocean voyage from Port Nyanzaru is probably the fastest, and the least work for you, if you can get a boat down the Soshenstar River. With a boat, it's six to ten days. Without, twice that. The map doesn't show the waterfalls, but there's about five of them on the trip to Port. They only slow you down if there's trouble (or if you have to carry sick people). You can pick up any of the paces I've just described by setting a fast pace (checks and...

I've run it three times now (though not all the way through - in fact, I think you guys might be furthest overall) and no one has done much of the same things. The way I see it, you have a few choices at the moment, all of which I am...

Regarding supplies, Qawasha said, "We can find food, and we have rain-catchers for water. My biggest regret is that we left our canoe at Camp Vengeance." Wulf Rygor answered Rodrigo, "I think we can make it back with just the three of us, if you take us within sight of the River Soshenstar." It was not for navigation sake that he made the request, but everyone remembered the quick-moving...

Answering a few of tglassy's Questions: (Better late than never!) I can't remember now but I think at the time, the Hobgoblin was the only one within 5' of the the goblin you killed. The other goblin was within 5' of TITUS, but not the Goblin. At any rate, you're right that it's a bit late (and a bit meta). I'll keep it in mind in the future, though. Titus & Morwen vs Goblins As Morwen scratched at its head from behind, Titus thrust his sword into the Hobgoblin. It did not go deep, but it burst green flame which singed the face of one of the goblins surrounding him. The goblin screeched and retreated down the trench as the hobgoblin and another goblin closed around Titus. The young nobleman swung his sword around, deftly parrying both...

Swithun called to Everett "Do not burn the one I am trying to take prisoner! Remember the plan: We need at least one alive." Noticing the Lizardmen, he called to everyone, "We must try to get one Kobold, and one Lizardman to question! The rest may die!" He kicked the burning Kobold, not to kill, but to knock the wind out of the little creature so it would stop jumping away when he tried to...

There's a lot of cover going on, and I've been taking into account, AFAIK. They are 20' up a ramp, after all - the ceiling provides cover for *them* if you get too far back, and the ground if you get too close (though not so much now that they are close to the top of the ramp). They're a pretty big target, though, so their AC isn't TOO high anyway (though their skin is pretty thick!).

Tarri had very nearly finished her map-sketches, and all were very happy to see Qawasha returned safely.

Fradak I just noticed that I never answered your question regarding Kobolds seeing Lorenn. Yes, as soon as they ran out of the tunnel (which they did, not because they knew he was there, but because they came out to look for trouble in general) they would see him. You're only hidden with Stealth when you're opponent doesn't have direct line-of-sight. (They gained line-of-sight when they moved).

..., helping you avoid bad surprises and misunderstandings later on. If thereís a big disagreement about the kind of things you want in your history, nowís the time to find out and talk about it. If something is in the Yes column, then during the rest of the game itís okay to introduce it into the history even if it doesnít seem like it fits. Youíve all agreed it belongs. If something is in the No column, itís never okay to bring into the game, no matter what. Youíve all agreed itís not part of the history. You don't HAVE to end up using something in the YES column during play. It isn't an exhaustive list of the history. It is mostly used to include or ban things that might be expected or not expected in a setting. For example, wizards in a fantasy setting might be expected. In a sci-fi setting, they might not be. So we will now go around and everyone put out one idea for the Palette. Link to the brainstorming document. Players: KahlessNestor Shayuri Archon Basileus FitzTheRuke ART! tglassy

So we don't have a genre picked out yet, right? No genre picked out yet. So we all pitch a premise and one of them gets picked? We pitch as many premises as we want, and then we choose one, yes. So if you have more ideas, feel free. If you have the PDF, there are some history seeds listed, too. THE BIG PICTURE An arcane field of knowledge - long lost and forgotten by most - has resurfaced, throwing a civilization into chaos! ...your cool ideas close to your vest until you use them. If the rest of us know what youíre going to do ahead of time, itís not as interesting. First, we want to brainstorm a simple overview of the history we want to play. If you were looking in a history book, this would be the one line that summarizes what happens, but leaves out all the details. It should be no more than a single sentence. Some examples: An ancient empire rises and falls. Cavemen at the dawn of time found the first civilization. Mankind leaves the sick Earth behind and spreads out to the stars. Pick something big. We want a lot of time and space to work with. Donít worry if your idea seems too simple or uninteresting. Thatís normal at this stage. Fleshing out the interesting details is what the rest of the game is all about. So letís start pitching some ideas. You can reply here and I will keep a doc as well that I will share with you all. I'm interested. Would we have to buy something? I'm not familiar with Microscope or how it works. I've created many worlds, though, and I enjoy collaborations where you just go with whatever everyone else says - "yes... and" appeals to me. Okay, that's three players and a DM interested. I think we can swing with that. You won't have to buy anything. I have the book. Mostly we just need something to take the place of the index cards. I've seen Adam Kobel run it on Roll20, but a Google Spreadsheet might work. Here is who I have: @Shayuri, @Archon Basileus, @FitzTheRuke. And one person interested for when the actual campaign starts. One thing we might need to determine is how long we want the Microscope part to go. It can go on as long as we wish. The more rounds it goes, the more history we develop. I know PBP can take a while. I imagine the Microscope part would take several months. We could even go a year. Depends on how much detail we want to develop. Anything not done during the Microscope game will have to be built by me as the DM. EDIT: We could also just play it by ear and stop when we think we have enough.

Right, but these rules suggest you can add a hundred idle landsmen regularly aboard with your crew of forty and cross the ocean. True, I wasn't defending them - the book would have benefited from much better researched naval history.

Take the Longship for example. 100 passengers? Sure, Vikings occasionally transported armies, but really, if you put 40 crew and 100 passengers in that Longship, you'd have STANDING ROOM ONLY. It can be DONE, but it's not like you're gonna cross the Atlantic at that kind of capacity. On a longship, there wouldn't be distinction between "crew" and "passengers". They would all be vikings and would all be expected to take a turn on the oars and fight on land. 100 Vikings in total would be reasonable, and the stats are right at the upper end of the size range for such a vessel.

2: The Keelboat is all sorts of stupid. As written, you can row it 20' in a round with only ONE crew member. This is a SIXTY-foot ship, as listed. 20 feet wide. It's got a map side-by side with a Longship, and it's only a wee bit smaller. The Keelboat lists its maximum capacity at 3 crew and 4 passengers. Seven People in a 60' ship. My parent's 20' sailboat held more. For comparison, they have the map for the Longboat right beside the one for the Keelboat, and they are only marginally different in size and layout. (It's 70 feet long) And yet the Longship lists a 40-person crew, and a HUNDRED passengers. (Which is actually pretty accurate). I think they have two types of small craft mixed together here. I mean, you can probably helm a 60' ship with one (or three) crew, but couldn't row it. As it's designed here, you can helm it, row it, AND fire its ballista with THREE people. Clearly, it drives me nuts. (/rant!) Now that I have the book, I've changed my opinion. Somebody either fai...

Before I complain, I'm gonna say that I like what I've read in it so far, but I've got one big beef: They've screwed up a few things in their ships, and I've only taken a cursory pass: 1: The Galley says it has a "Naval Ram" affixed to it's stern! I'm not sure how a ship rams with it's rear end. 2: The Keelboat is all sorts of stupid. As written, you can row it 20' in a round with only ONE crew member. I guess so? Weird. I had you at 55/63 on my last notes but I *remember* you being at 62/63. Now I'm not sure if an update of mine got saved. Either way, I guess you're at 50/63 now! That part I can explain at least! I was at 62/63 because I had 7 temp HP from my fiendish vigor invocation. So that took most of the damage from the first hit, and I only took 1 hp of real damage. This is why the healing, due to timing, was mostly wasted (unless it all sorts of happens together)

1: Kalorn gets his 9 (Bringing him to full) and THEN he takes the Crit. 2: Nah. First attack kills Troll1, so he does his first attack against Troll2.So basically he heals 1 hp, then loses 13, got it.

Why did you need to see the individual d6's?Because of the greater weapon fighting style. I get to reroll any 1 or 2s. For example, if I were to toll 3d6 and get a total of 9, maybe I rolled 3, 3, and 3 (no rerolls) or I rolled 6, 2, 1 (2 rerolls).

It's dark, but you can see out the broken window well enough to know that he's out there fighting a small crowd. You might put HIM to sleep, though.Yeah, that was the expectation though. Dandin might not know that he's been hit hard. But he might see it as a viable solution to Titus's predicament if he did. Better he pass out than get knocked out.

Ancalagon What do you think is wrong with the Trolls' positions? They seem fine to me. (Unless you just mean that I reversed two of the Icons, which is possible. I've done it before.) Ok, so Troll 2 is the one that cannon-balled into the party and got hit by an arrow. He should be right besides Sesto and Kalorn, in the N and O rows. However.... ... did you edit the post? I could have *sworn* that troll 3 was listed as in the N-O rows and Troll 2 was back in the I J area? I checked twice? Strange... Ok it's in the right place then. Lastly, I'll note that Troll 2 should be providing cover to the party due to the angle and its size and maybe troll 3 would have missed because of that, but that's timing dependent :)

Nanny Pupu's Winged Monkeys As quick as Rodrigo was to find a hiding spot (and Weed nearly always looked just like any other bit of jungle foliage) the others were too late. The winged monkeys turned their beady eyes toward the Sticks and began to make a riot of noise - screeching and hollering. They jumped up and down and pointed, and from further into the ruins, the old woman's voice could be heard calling to them. She said, in a thickly accented version of the common tongue, "What have you found, my pets?" Then, as she began to come around an old ruined wall, she called out, "Is someone there? Come! Let Old Nanny Pupu see you! You must come close. These eyes are not like they once was."Harb ducked into hiding as he realized that the woman had been alerted to their presence. He did his best to find a spot where she wouldn't be able to see him right away herself while hoping that the monkeys wouldn't betray his presence to her. Or my own poor dice rolls? Lorenn vs an Ice Troll Lorenn and the Troll could hear high-pitched shrieks and a deep, murmuring rumble that echoed through the corridors and caverns from somewhere to the north. Yes, even they can hear the poor kobolds getting eaten by Hadar. Lorenn sticks with Mord sins the Bhaal temple and as Mord is in the caves, the probabilities that someone else cast this kind of spell seems very low.

Now I just need 8 hours for a LR and 8 hours to cast the beast bond ritual, and 50GP worth of food - can that be in the stores? See IC post. I forget, did you have a wolf with you the whole time or are you taming one of the wolves that are already here? Also, what is your opinion on barding for the wolf @jmucchello? will it need proficiency in armour? I have two skills to choose so could that be one of them? Barding is feasible for a wolf, though the beast might not like it. I would call that an Animal Handling extended task to get the wolf to accept the barding. Obviously there's nothing available here for barding. You will have to have it made when you get back to town. There will be downtime after the next "chapter" and you will need downtime to get armor made and the wolf use to wearing it. Are we getting a short rest? That is up to you. Obviously Perin is hoping for some rest. While the townsfolk are in a hurry to leave, they are still abuzz with activity around the camp. T...

Yep. I'm also 100% in support of being true to the character's feelings. Another factor against Smite (though I maintain it's what I usually see out of Paladins, and seems to work well) is that *sometimes* it will be wasted. I've had a Smite-Happy Paladin player use her smites when her regular shot would have dropped the foe. She did it often enough that I started to let her know, to save her smites for later. Last session I ran, the paladin came out, and use branding smite *and* a smite dice vs an undead, and rolled a crit. Did over 60 points of damage. The undead had less than 30 left.

I wonder that too because I find 5e Adventures, for the most part, to be better than 80%+ of the past adventures, story-wise (a lot of them are not all that easy to run, but they have generally great plots, IMO.) Aside from maybe not liking FR (not a huge fan myself, more neutral) what is NOT "steak" about them? It's not so much the APs, it's a lack of proper setting books like FRCG and books for other settings. Plus most of the books are such an unfocused mish-mash of material that they lack the "Steak".

I sometimes wonder what exactly a person can do with a (non-modern) medkit that would help someone WHILE THEY ARE FIGHtING. Ideas: 1: Pain-numbing Root/Herb ("Here, chew on this!") 2: Bladder/wineskin of stimulant ("Drink up!") 3: Clippers to chop-off arrow-shafts (leave the heads in). Any other ideas? I mean there are almost more ways to imagine how you could help (even by propping the fighter up) WITHOUT using up a consumable. Personally, I find (IRL) just having someone shout to me, "You got this!" to be very helpful (that's why I never minded the Warlord's "healing" in 4e, other than when it caused the dying to get back up - though that was easily explained by suggesting that they only *thought* they were dying until the expert told them it wasn't as bad as it felt like). How about taking a page from Naruto? Medicine pills that gives the user a burst of energy to keep fighting.

Julkoun Cellars, About 10 PM It was late in the evening when the Daggerfordians left their Julkounian rescuees in the bunkroom. The covered bridge was dark, and the elves stationed there reported no recent activity at the door. They could see the closest watchtower from the bridge's eastern window, and it had been abandoned. Smoke obscured the night sky. It was probable that the goblins were beginning to set fire to the town. Where to first? Do you want to leave the Elves to guard the townsfolk?I think that's a good idea for now. Also, the townsfolk should have been able to grab weapons and armor from the fallen enemy troops to at least be able to help defend. Edit: Maybe bring one brave townie for a guide? As they walked across the covered bridge Dandin waved back at the pickets behind them. He felt his energy returning to him and wanted another chance at showing the greenskins the error of their ways. "Well, so much for, 'We're on our way back'... Alright, shall we see about saving more ...

Aremus moved along the road until he could see out of the fog. The Giant and the Dragon were locked in battle. Surely the Dragon would win if the Giant had no help. Somehow, none of this seemed to bother him. He was used to feeling excited and worried during any battle at all, but now he felt nothing. What had Tranio done to him? He calmly drew his bow, out of reflex more than desire, and he fired two arrows at the dragon. He wasn't particularly concerned with whether it hit or not, so he slipped back into the fog for cover. [roll0] for [roll1] and [roll2] for [roll3] Edit: Wow. I didn't think he cared THAT little. He's not even trying! Be happy if that doesn't kill the giant :)

... So I've sat down to actually do it, and I've noticed a few things worth mentioning: Obviously, the 40' wall can't wrap all the way around the 20' radius sphere. This would be why tglassy mentioned wrapping it back on itself, I assume. So it's only going to be effective in stopping them from running FORWARD, not from running away. Of course, they barely know what's going on. Another note on Hunger of Hadar: This is the kind of spell that would give PTSD to people who see it in use. It might be powerful, but it's very likely to colour the way NPCs look at the caster (and the party in general). I can see people having an easier time justifying the Necromancy, which is notoriously unpopular itself. This is why I had Kalorn - who's a pretty hard fellow - react like that. His magical education was very "meat and potatoes" , he didn't understand his warlock powers well. So to see another warlock do that is shocking. He wouldn't have batted an eye at incinerating the kobolds with a fireball.
