I seriously hope it's Planescape and not just more FR. If it had to be FR, I'd love it if it was somewhere other than Faerun, like Al-Qadim, Kara-Tur, or even Maztica.

Agreed. The line below, just by itself, taken straight from the Iron Defender feature, would do wonders for the Beast Master's pet. "ou take a bonus action on your turn to command it (the Iron Defender) to take one of the actions in its stat block or the Dash, Disengage, or Help action."

ICYMI, enjoy! It's got two new subclasses, new spells, and some tweaks to multiclassing. Plus, you know, typos. Now to the meat of the matter. The Battle Smith. Everyone's better at having pets than the poor Beast Master Ranger. Discuss!

Well. I was really hoping for Planescape/Spelljammer They told us months ago that it wouldn't be Spelljammer. Alas. Also: I was happy about this until I checked out the thread. I won't lie--the negativity here is bringing me down somewhat. I'm sure I'll recover, but reading this thread wasn't good for me.

Well. I was really hoping for Planescape/Spelljammer, but Eberron seems like a pretty good second choice. At the least it has the virtue of not being in the Forgotten Realms. I wonder what this means for Adventurer's League this coming September. Lots more AL adventure mods in the pipes? What about the Wayfarer's Guide to Eberron PDF? Will that material be included as-is into this upcoming Setting Book, or will it be tweaked and transformed? New subclasses in the works? Airship rules expansion to the vehicle rules in Ghosts of Saltmarsh? Let me amend my statement to this is pretty damn exciting!I do like the Realms, but I'm just getting tired of it these days so I share your sentiment there. Also would have preferred Ravenloft too.

Everyone's better at having pets than the poor Beast Master Ranger. Discuss!Since the Beast Master is a worse beast master than everyone else, hardly a difficult feat to achieve.

Agreed. The line below, just by itself, taken straight from the Iron Defender feature, would do wonders for the Beast Master's pet. "[Y]ou take a bonus action on your turn to command it (the Iron Defender) to take one of the actions in its stat block or the Dash, Disengage, or Help action." That would still leave the beastmaster unable to use TWF. Imagine you chose twf as your weapons style and then you decide to take beastmaster. While I don't hate the two weapon fighting rule, maybe it needs a general revision to not take a bonus action but using a bonus action improves it. Or we need the twf style remove the bonus action cost.

Everyone's better at having pets than the poor Beast Master Ranger. Discuss! I was thinking this and was thinking of perhaps using the battlesmith as a base for building a better beastmaster.

  • 10:25 PM - Greenstone.Walker quoted iltharanos in post Are players always entitled to see their own rolls?
Well, the situational secret rolling implies that your players will metagame rather than roleplay the result of the roll That can be dealt with by defining failed results as "You don't know" rather than "You think the opposite." For example, the vizier has a deception roll of 17. If the player rolls over 17 for their insight, tell them "You are pretty sure he is lying", otherwise tell them "You can't tell either way." The possibility of metagaming comes up when on a failure you tell the player "You are pretty sure he is telling the truth". Players might go, "oh, I rolled a 2 and the GM tells me the vizier is telling the truth, that means the vizier is really be lying." Additionally - the GM might not even ask for a roll. Some things automatically succeed and some things automatically fail. Rolling should only happen when there is a chance of failure *and* a cost of failure.
  • 03:31 PM - lowkey13 quoted iltharanos in post Are players always entitled to see their own rolls?
Well, the situational secret rolling implies that your players will metagame rather than roleplay the result of the roll, which further implies a bit of a lack of trust, or at least a lack of immersion in your campaign. If you haven't already, I'd discuss your expectations of staying in-role depending on the results their characters know (so no metagaming). If you can trust them to roleplay what their characters know, then it'll obviate the need for secret DM rolls for the PCs. I disagree. I think many people are simply not answering the question, and instead stating their own preferences. Which is fine, but unhelpful. The question says, "entitled," which may be an unfortunate phrasing (entitled tends to carry negative connotations). No table works the exact same way- for example, at my table, most non-combat encounters *do not have a roll, and are determined by the role-playing.* Some commenters might view this as "unfair," as the DM is not only keeping the "roll" secret from the players, but ...

  • 03:05 PM - Gnashtooth quoted iltharanos in post How do you handle Commoners in your game?
Ooh. 11) Choking hazards for creatures - have that marauding red dragon choke on an entire village of commoners for easy xp Oooh, but then they WOULD have hit points, because they would actually receive the XP for choking the dragon, and then they would all die as soon as they leveled!
