  • 03:28 AM - Quickleaf mentioned neobolts in post Sword Coast Legends DM Tools - Twitch Event Recap
neobolts Thanks for gathering this info on the DM Tools! EDIT: Btw, if you watch the E3 campaign creation video it confirms the following map tile sets: mountains, grasslands, swamp, underdark. Any further word on campaign creation and storytelling? For example, can the DM create cut scenes, change camera orientation, or zoom in for conversations? Or are you locked into a single isometric perspective? Another example, how does it look when a DM "speaks" thru an NPC using Sword Coast Legends? Is it strictly text that appears? Do you hear the DM's voice? Or something else entirely?

The cypher in the image reads "FUN AND GAMES ARE GREAT DISTRACTIONS A?? SMALL THINGS CAN HAVE CHAIN REACTIONS" (The question marks are because I couldn't figure out the numbers in that spot due to "staining" on the paper) A product to fund raise for kids with cancer, is my guess.

Hopefully this is enough in the guilds section to run the setting. i mean the entire sitting is one mega metropolis. Like the 3e Sharn book vs the 3e Eberron book. Given the nature of the setting, covering the Guilds is pretty much everything. There is no government outside the Megacor...Guilds, nor any religion.

Between the Guild Section, MtG Wikis, and DMGUILD, it should be fine, but Art of Ravnica and the novels and short stories and the 10th district chapter, and the creatures of course, it should be have enough to run campaigns for the Setting. AL will like release AL Iegal Adventures for Ravnica, the way it has for Eberron. Who knows if the demand is there, perhaps they will release more Ravnica and MtG official hardcover products in the future.

  • 05:08 PM - robus quoted neobolts in post Wizards wanted to fire us, so can we fire them for setting laziness
Fourth, you headed this "Wizards wanted to fire us". Who is "us"? The people being figuratively fired in that tweet were toxic players. It was about creeps at public games trying to play gatekeeper and say who was and wasn't a "real" D&D player. Why do you identify "us" as a toxic players and equate that with disliking FR as a setting? Well the OP did out himself as a particular kind of person, so, yeah, I think he rightly feels singled out by Mearls's tweet ;) "Not for political reasons or any other stupid social cause junk."

  • 03:11 AM - Mercurius quoted neobolts in post Mearls On D&D's Design Premises/Goals
The topic of bloat (and by extension, release pace) is part of what Mearls was getting at. I was just sharing my personal experience that the pace of book releases has outstripped my responsible spending for the first time in 5e. The problem is I really really really want to buy $175 worth of D&D modules, sourcebooks, and art books. :( So its a good problem, like having too much starting pitching. I’m inclined to agree. For me, options speak to replayability. I veer more towards the 5E minimalism than PF crunchiness, but this strikes a chord with me. My daughters and I started playing Catan a few months ago; we've probably played half a dozen times, or slightly more. While we still very much enjoy it and there are subtle aspects still to be explored, I can see how we'll soon be ready for an expansion set to diversify play experience. So while I love the simplicity of 5E, I really don't see why they can't have optional "expansion sets" like Catan for those who want a crunchier, or at le...

  • 10:11 PM - iserith quoted neobolts in post What DM flaw has caused you to actually leave a game?
I probably run a less immersive D&D table TBH. I've had players who range from "I am Elfavarius, Keeper of the Evergrove, and this is my lineage..." to "Dude look how many d6 I am about to roll lolz". Most of my current players are some mix of the two. For me, it's less about the "immersion," and more about it's simply easier to adjudicate actions as DM if the player is reasonably specific about what he or she wants to do. It also avoids problems as to me making assumptions about what the character is doing and being wrong about it. Combined with a technique of trying to ask only for ability checks and letting the player add the relevant skill proficiency, it's very smooth sailing. If there's a side effect of more "immersive" storytelling, that's all good, but has never really been one of my aims.

NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO ........ OOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO! The only important question left in this thread is whether you had a bagel or donut in that gap in your "OOOOOs." Also (and I expect pitchforks and torches heading my way for saying this)... WotC is releasing too many 5e books right now. I'm in the middle of a Tales of the Loop campaign and dropping around a 100 bucks for a two-book Waterdeep module and a Ranvica setting book a 3 month span is too much to keep up with. Plus that art book looks super sweet. No pitchforks or torches from me, but I don't really get this. All you are really saying is that WotC should only release enough books that you yourself can happily play and buy at the pace you want to play and buy, one after the other. The problem is that A) Others go at a diffe...
  • 07:53 PM - DM Dave1 quoted neobolts in post What DM flaw has caused you to actually leave a game?
This is totally fine. Players can either act as a player as shown [requesting to use a mechanic] or instead act as a character [describing character activity and letting the DM pick the mechanic]. The two are equally valid from my perspective. My first reaction is to say the latter is much more preferable as it is kinda part of the point of what we're doing here - that RP thing. Both do achieve the goal, however, so maybe sure fine once in a while. I still like to encourage the players to act out (1st person) or describe (3rd person) what it is the PC is doing, though. Otherwise, we're perhaps just pressing buttons on our character sheets. That's not really what I've signed up for. I am okay with veteran players taking the initiative to roll. After all, if I don't care about the roll, they'll never know. I would not encourage new players to assume they should roll. IME, it is a much smoother session when players are paying attention and telling me what their character is ...
  • 05:11 PM - Inchoroi quoted neobolts in post What DM flaw has caused you to actually leave a game?
Everyone has thrown out the big game-killers (railroading, inconsistent rulings, Mary Sue character, etc), so here instead are some specific tales of things DMs have done that got me to quit games... These were public games at game stores, and I did not stay longer than one session: - (D&D 4e) New players start exceptionally lower level than current players, to the point where they cannot hit foes, pass checks, or survive an single hit due to the scaling. The DM wanted long-term players to feel rewarded for attending reliably, but came up with an unwelcoming system that punished me for the sin of moving to a new city. - (D&D 4e) The DM did not restrict character creation in any way and did not have players to coordinate what the were playing. Being new, I rolled a support bard. The veteran players new what to expect and all rolled CN or CE rogues that planned to betray the party. - (Paladium Fantasy) For a brand new game that was starting I watched what the other players made and then roll...

This is just...odd. Of course it is not the end of the world. I'm not sure why this exists Someone writing for Dragon+ is sick of minions and wanted to be able to slaughter them wholesale to relieve their anger?
  • 05:12 PM - gyor quoted neobolts in post Despicable Me's Minions are now officially 5e
Raise your outrage flags on high, friends! If you thought a Magic: The Gathering setting was the end of the world, prepare to be Feebleminded by the presence of a Minions stat block in Dragon+ issue 21. That's right, the babbling yellow blob-humanoids from "Despicable Me", "Despicable Me 2", "Despicable Me 3", and "Minions" are here! You've seen them shared by your aunt in lame Facebook memes about needing more coffee or "stressed" being "desserts" backwards. And now...five of them can be a hard encounter appropriate for four 3rd-level adventurers! You may be ready to dodge their slap & tickle, but are you prepared to roll vs fart!? /s This is just...odd. Of course it is not the end of the world. I'm not sure why this exists, but there's no going back. Is "Despicable Me" one of the unannounced settings for 2019? Where you hear this?

  • 01:40 AM - default_entry quoted neobolts in post When Fantasy Meets Africa
    1) I found it very confusing to see articles where Black Panther was praised for mix-and-matching the whole of African culture, while Tomb of Annihilation was criticized for doing the same. 2) I'm not a fan of the way the term "cultural appropriation" is used. It is too often focused on *what* a person did rather than *why* they did it. Intent matters. You cannot promote diversity and inclusiveness in a work if you cannot use cultural references outside of your own culture. Its also about tone - Wakanda was presented as a real and relatable and ALIVE. Chult is a place of horrible, withering death with african-ish names slapped on everything.

    1) I found it very confusing to see articles where Black Panther was praised for mix-and-matching the whole of African culture, while Tomb of Annihilation was criticized for doing the same. Tomb of Annihilation took a variety of African cultural elements and put them into the blender, making a smooth, easily digested smoothie for it's primarily white audience. Black Panther made each Wakandan tribe culturally unique from the others, influenced by real-world tribal cultures. The intent was to highlight the diversity of African culture, not blend it into a homogeneous African-blend that really doesn't do the continent justice.

  • 11:59 AM - MostlyHarmless42 quoted neobolts in post The Monetization of D&D Play
I have had one game store that charged a minimal rental fee for the back room. Other than that I never encountered a store charging. I do not like the idea of paid DMs, although I know they exist. To me it implies that DMing is a service, rather than another participant in a social event. I've heard the arguement that DMing is a huge time investment, but the extra time a DM spends on prep is a fun part of the hobby, not a prelude to billable labor. I don't really have much of an opinion on the concept of stores charging for use of their space, albeit I feel it would be a poor business model for them to charge too much. However, on the flip side of that same coin, if you play in a gaming space regularly you should support the store through making purchases of any variety, if not every time them regularly enough; they do have bills to pay to keep in business. As for the subject of professional DM's, it is a much more nuanced subject which one could make a few arguments for or against it...

  • 04:24 AM - zedturtle quoted neobolts in post Who is Matthew Colville?
I'm out of the loop, it seems. My feed is blowing up that legendary D&D designer Matt Colville has a D&D Kickstarter. I'm not really into the D&D streamers. Would I know him outside of that? He's been working in video games for the last few years. But if you go back about a decade-and-a-half then you can find his oeuvre (Star Trek games, Dune, Lord of the Rings Adventure Game, 3rd party publisher titles for 3E, etc.). But his current claim-to-fame isn't as a streamer. It's as someone who dispenses excellent advice to new 5e GMs. He has streamed some of his games before and the Kickstarter is to get his next game streamed from the start. But the reason why I went all in on the kickstarter is that he's got a lot of common sense advice that he explains in a clear way. I don't always agree with him, but I'm always entertained (and every once in a while informed).

"Not monster manual 3" is good. I hope it functions for both players and DMs...a sort of "Mordenkainen's Guide to Planehopping" (which would be a better and more whimsical title)By "not MM3," pretty sure they meant "this is the MM3, but we don't use names like that."

  • 06:53 PM - Tanin Wulf quoted neobolts in post Mearls' "Firing" tweet
D&D is not a charity; I have both closed invite-only groups and open groups to meet new players. Both have their function. That said, what sort of experiences have you had where people are either pretending to be D&D players or pretending to be part of your social group? The only negative players I can draw to mind are those that are rude, disruptive, or unhygienic. Do have a specific story or experience that required gatekeeping to weed out a pretender? I'm not trying to say your experiences aren't valid, I'm just not following your position and thought an anecdote might help me understand. Oh that's easy! My college gaming group almost fell apart when a woman, let's call her Heather, started dating one of my gamers. She wanted the join our group, and we had an opening, and she seemed like a great person. So we brought her in. Turns out, we were wrong. She confessed, quite literally, to only joining to get him out of the group and break us up (and she succeeded, three months later, on getti...
