    I can't shake the feeling that the class is overfull. It has spellcasting, two different types of item infusion, and the pet with associated abilities. I suppose it speaks to the design that I can't think of what to cut. Spellcasting seems like the least thematic element, but its got a lot of raw utility. I think it hangs together overall. Its complicated and stands out from a usual adventuring party, but that's more pro than con for its intended audience. Cut the pet, is my suggestion. (And no, that new subclass is not a pet-less class. Its pet is just slightly more different from the others than they are from each other.) I just don't think it's essential to the artificer concept, but having it baked in as part of the class's meaningful features means that it now is whether your artificer wants it to be or not. As baked-in as it is, you can't* just choose to play an artificer without a pet, and that's sad. *Well of course you can, just like you can choose to play a fighter without armor...

    I'm a little surprised that hellish rebuke beats out hex for warlocks considering hex is a core class spell. I wonder if the charts are taking into account the fact that almost all tieflings get the Hellish Rebuke spell as part of its racial features? If spells that are given out "for free" like that as part of racial features are getting counted, that could explain why-- since I'm sure a large proportion of warlocks are probably tieflings.

    These seem all over the place power wise. One gives you the ability to get any wizard cantrip and free +1 (temporary) magic items and another gives you some ability bonuses and the friends and prestidigitation cantrips. That's because they're subraces. The Mark of Making is applied to humans, who have no other benefits. The Mark of Hospitality is applied to halflings, who are ALREADY Brave and Lucky and Nimble. If the Mark of Hospitality was on its own as powerful as Making, it would be HOSPITALITY that was broken. It's only natural that side by side, a human mark will be more powerful than a mark that's being added to other racial abilities (elf, dwarf, gnome, halfling).

    I really like the Eladrin shifting personality thing. I'm not sure why but for some reason I'm a bit down on the Gith. They get a +2 to an ability, +1 to an ability, a toughness boost, and free access to 3 different spells. It all seems like it might overshadow the other races, especially wis based ones. P.S. If this is all pointing to an upcoming book of the planes then sign me up! The Gith is based on the Tiefling model, cantrip, spell at 3rd level, spell at 5th.

    This interpretation works really well for some cases, and less well for others. The article mentions Cure Wounds which is a touch spell. Holding a shield in one hand and a weapon in another definitely seems like it would interfere, and its reasonable you would have to put your weapon away. On the other hand Magic Missile is verbal/somatic with no material component and is very much ranged. Having a rule which might require a one armed/shield bearing/othewise occupied wizard to put away their wand to cast magic missle seems wierd. Applying cure wounds with a weapon or shield sounds a lot like our half-gnoll paladin when he does lay on hands for someone who is unconscious. He slaps them awake ("Wake up! Wake up!"). At first I had to resist giving the healed creature extra damage as a result of the lay on hands.

    Its not actually the stowing/taking out part that I dont like. The action rules are flexible enough that you don't really have to worry about it all that much. Its the idea that you can't cast Magic Missle (or Maze, or Meteor Swarm, or Poison Spray or Ray of Frost, Prestidigitation, etc...) with a wand. Even if I have a wand in one hand I have to cast those spells with my off hand. I agree, that doesn't feel right. However, I let my players decide whether its material component or focus. My player chose Materials, but I think Focuses vis-a-vis 4E might feel more "right" if they are required for all spells (so even MM requires a focus). I'd have to ask my players, but I don't see it really being a problem.

Re: Cure Wounds: you could deliver the touch with the holy symbol on your shield. Re: Magic Missile: I agree, that seems a bit off. But I'd let the restriction stand, and point the player to the War Caster feat.

    Vampire spawn have the weakness "The vampire is destroyed if a piercing weapon made of wood is driven into its heart while it is incapacitated in its resting place." We were fighting two spawn in their "resting area" (they didn't have beds or anything similar). The monk used stunning strike on the spawn to incapacitate them and the barbarian made an attack roll (with advantage) to "stake" them with an appropriate weapon and that was the end of it. After thinking about it, I wasn't sure what "driven into its heart" translates to in game terms. Is one weapon attack enough? Should there be a damage threshold or should it be a "Coup de grâce" type of attack. At the end of the day the DM was happy to reward clever play, but it was an awfully big shortcut. From a game-balance point of view, that is stretching things rather a lot. After all, if you were attacking an incapacitated human foe, an attack with advantage doesn't mean you get to stab your foe in the heart. Heck, you don't even get an au...

    From my perspective, I can't think of any situation where keeping track of movement or actions for picking up a sword would heighten the tension, or add any interesting dynamics to the game. I'm not saying one doesn't exist, but I feel like 95% of the time you let the player just pick up the sword and keep the game moving forward. The finale in Ladyhawk immediately comes to my mind. Still, D&D doesn't model combat with sufficient fidelity for this type of thing to make a difference, so I agree, just let 'em pick it up.
