Who says that Carcari functioning as a prison plane is natural? Perhaps it was like other lower planes once, filled with evil neutral choatic petitioners, until the Gods decided to dump the evil titans there, and turned it into a prison. Also note the domains of the Gods of the plane are likely not as unpleasant as the rest of the plane, islands of dark paradise in a prison of torment.

Ghaunadaur is discussed in MTOFs and they do mention that is was originally a member of the Seldarine, sided with Lolth at first, then tried to betray her to Corellon Larethan and got deboned for his trouble. It does say both this and the stories that say he is far more ancient could both be truth, begs some serious questions and suggests that Ghaunadaur joined with a far older evil after...

I never said the sadomasochism was covert, I just found it funny that it's directed at symbol they intended to stand for the Patriarchy instead of the male feminist types on the show. And I'm fine with the feminism being inconsistant in the show as an MRA, I find it amusing.

Honestly Satan seems smarter then everyone on the show, manipulating both their beliefs and ambitions to suit his plans. Also the relationship between Satanic authority figures and...

I didn't mean sexless as in chasity, I meant sexless as in Satan would not really be male in the human sense of the term. Anyways I've watched the rest of the series and I think someone on their writing staff is finding ways to subltly undermine their feminist messaging. Satan is supposed to represent the patriarchy, but he in practice is indirectly the biggest feminist in the show. ...

The only male in a position of authority, aside from Satan who really isn't supposed to have a sex, as angels are genderless, is the high priest, but nothing in the show says a woman can't be high priest in the Church of Night and in fact it's clear that they can be.

I think it's a bit of both, not all of their magic is from Satan, they can call upon other powers for example, like an exorcism that called upon famous witches of history, because in the show the Church of Night (the Satanic Church) forbids Exorcisms, its a form of magic Satan doesn't offer and its double forbidden to particape in Catholic rites, so they turned to a different power.

Yeah Witches aren't humans in the show, they live for longer for example, and have magical abilities, are easier to raise from the dead and more. Sabrina is half witch and half human, so I do get the half elf thing, it's just these witches are more of the infernal type then the fey type, so Tiefling fits them better.

And in some ways it is better then the 1990's show yes, but fans of the 1990's show might in some cases be disappointed by this show, as it is so different from the original. Honestly I find very little comedy, the horror is usually played straight, unlike the Adam's Family. As for the "witch" term it's gender neutral, and some of the most influential witches, both Satanic and Wiccan, are men. Gerald Gardner and Alex Sanders, who was the last to meaningfully claim the name King of the Witches, and those two are just the biggest names. Also interesting...

If we divide the +75 monsters and NPCs equally between them, that will leave only room enough for say 33 monsters, that is not enough to do all of Ravnica's monsters justice, even if you reused MM stats for similar monsters, so fewer stat blocks are needed.

No that isn't WotCs position there has always been a canon for both FR and Eberron for example, it's just that DMs have always been free to ignore it if they choose and go in their direction, but that is NOT the same as there being no being no canon.

Are D&D Ravnica and MtG Ravnica the same? Because MtG fans don't think so, they say GGR isn't MtG canon, but as far as I know at this point it is apart of the D&D multiverse, so that makes it D&D canon along with FR, DL, Darksun, Greyhawk, and so on. Which means there has to be two different Ravnica's? Doesn't it? This could end up confusing.

Ask your players opinions about the presence of famous characters bothers them or not in the game. As long as you don't use Drizzt to upstage the characters it will likely be fine. Those who truly love the Forgotten Realms usually love it's NPCs, which gives FR it's character. Or perhaps you could have the character rescue Drizzt, whose wounded and needs help, the best of both worlds.

Looking into Boros Angels, I think they made War Leader Angels and Firemane Angels separate types of Battle Angels to help make sense of both the art and lore. Because Razia and Firemane Angels had four wings, but Aurelia while still a red head, only had two wings. So making them different, but related types fixes this.

That used to be WotCs position. They abandoned it with 5e. How do you or gyor know what is WotC's stance on canon fluff? Can you point me to a post, statement, tweet, video, etc. where one of the designers comments on the their approach to canon in 5e? I the two of you just guessing or inferring?

Like gyor said you can find the episodes on YouTube a few days after they air but with Twitch specifically it’s a little more complicated. The show itself (live & past broadcasts) are found on the official DnD Twitch channel. The after show Talk Pact is found on the SavingThrowShow Twitch Channel-which is the one it sounds like you found. Just head over to the DnD channel and look under Past Broadcasts and you should find it. Hope that helps.

gyor: I don’t know what game you’ve been playing, but it’s been obvious to me ever since the play test period that 5e was the “DIY Edition” of D&D. We’re never going to get more than bare bones minimal coverage of anything because they want us to do it all ourselves.

Just a bit of context to gyor's point about the settings and the survey that WotC did. The survey in question was asking what settings would people like updated. It wasn't really asking if people played in one setting or another. The survey was, to some degree, kinda self selecting. If you didn't play in any of those settings, it's unlikely you would answer.

Just after the 1:04 mark in the latest Dragon Talk: Morbeck: "The second one is going to be a female Cleric, for reasons that become obvious once you see the area which it [a new Endless Quest book being worked on] is set in, which I probably shouldn't talk about quite yet" Greg Tito: "Nah, that's right, exactly; *I* know what you are talking about, though." gyor obviously not much to go on, but I know the topic of Forgotten Realms religion is your jam: any thoughts on what area might make "a female Cleric" an obvious choice just by the location itself?

  • 06:18 PM - Satyrn mentioned gyor in post 5e needs a Faiths and Avatars style book
This is where polytheism is being confused with Christianity. There is no "uniform" for a priest of Corellon, holy days depend on locality, there are no standardised rituals, and very little in the way of hierarchy. Each temple would have an autonomous high priest, and he/she would have a few acolytes. Appropriate offerings are "anything the god likes" so in the case of Corellon, singing, mostly (and all temples need cash for maintenance). Well, if your right that this is the way Correllon's priesthood works, that seems like the perfect sort content for such a book would provide: "There are no standardised rituals to celebrate Correlon, etc. . . here's a couple examples of how Correlon is worshipped in the Dales, and here's how Corellon is worshipped (and has his name spelled) . . . " So, yeah. I think you're making the case for this book. It's just a shame for gyor that we're not in the TSR era because then there would be a spot in the schedule for it. Because the only reason we won't see this book is the very simple "it doesn't fit in WotC's publishing strategy."

Kobold Avenger - Mearls has mentioned making a Warlock with an Elder Brain patron gyor - I'm not sure I'd like to see a Paladin oath that deals with psionics. I mean the other oaths are thematic: Vengeance, Devotion, Crown, Conquest, Redemption... I suppose the Oath of the Ancients is semi-similar in concept to what a Psi-oath would be like. I'd think the oath would have to be something like "Awakening" because you're awakening your own potential. As a DM I'd force any Paladins of this to probably be part of a religious order associated with Psionic deities.

...tion of the game. Killing is a default assumption of D&D. We can have conversations about whether that is a good thing, that is a bad thing, what that says about society, and so on, but it is a default assumption. You don't need have a giant conversation during Session 0 where you explain to the players that they might, in fact, end up killing dragons, orcs, and other things during the course of the game. It is assumed. Sexual assault? Rape? No. That is never part of my assumed "D&D," and, to be totally honest, I am aware of more than enough bad DM stories that feature this (not to mention the aforementioned F.A.T.A.L., among other low makrs in T.T.R.P.G. history) that this should rightfully set off alarm bells. Is it possible to do well? Probably not. I have my doubts, since I wouldn't play that game, but maybe for others. Is it something that most certainly needs to be fully vetted with the table (not assumed) and completely cleared? Oh, yeah, definitely. Anyway, getting back to @gyor I think that what sometimes happens is sometimes, people have an idea. And it could be a cool, awesome idea! And then they share it, and other people shoot it down, not seeing the cool idea for what it is. And there can be a natural defensiveness about it. To give you an example which is somewhat close to this- I absolutely love the whole Covenant "The Land" series (even the most recent ones), and I have shamelessly borrowed portions of the books, here and there, for my D&D campaigns. Thing is, there is this part, in the very beginning of the very first book, that isn't great. I mean- the 70s were a heckuva time, and all that, but the particular use in that book to illustrate certain points just doesn't age well. IOW, it sucks knowing that an entire series starts with the main character raping another character. Makes it a difficult recommendation. So, moving back to your original character concept- what I would say is that if the immediate feedback you're getting is that it seems...

  • 05:57 PM - MechaTarrasque mentioned gyor in post Mike Mearls responds: Any chance we’ll see a 5e incarnation of the Warden?
I had another thought on the barbarian. It isn't my favorite idea (I like the hybrid thing a lot more), but I suppose you could have a variant of Path of the Ancestral Guardian, where primal spirits hang around the barbarian, but instead of being defensive like the ancestral guardian, maybe they could attack all the enemies that are just outside of your reach (say from 5-10 feet normally), with the type of damage (and any special effects the attacks produce [special effects would start at level 6]) being a product of the sub-subclass: the tree warden spirits would do bludgeoning damage and entangle the enemies, the wild warden spirits could do slashing or piercing damage and frighten the enemies, etc. So the name might be Path of the Warden, but in effect it is Path of the Horde Breaker (thanks gyor, I wouldn't have thought of this without your last post).

  • 05:41 PM - MechaTarrasque mentioned gyor in post D&D Beyond: Raven Queen
Mike Mearls described the Feywild as a transitional plane between the Prime Material Plane and the Positive Energy Plane (https://www.sageadvice.eu/2017/09/01/shadowfell-and-feywild-explained/), so if each campaign world is in its own Prime Material Plane, then every campaign world has its own Shadowfell and Feywild.* All the campaign worlds seem to be in the same multiverse**, but I don't know if there is anything that says they are all in the same universe (and the whole bit about spheres would suggest that they are in different universes in the same multiverse). * I like gyor's idea that they are interconnected, but even if everything is in the same universe, there is no indication that it is easy (or possible) to get from one campaign world's part of the shadowfell to another's. **The idea that there is more than one version of someone is so closely connotated to multiverse that it might as well be part of the definition. There is no reason to believe that there is one and only version of anything (especially anything that was once mortal) running around the D&D multiverse. There may be a tendency for each universe to have a Raven Queen, but the FR one may be no more the PoL one than goateed evil mirror universe Spock is the regular Mr. Spock.

I'd take the opposite tack to gyor - I've seen too many Kickstarts fail exactly because of stretch goals. (Loss of focus, over-reach, etc etc) The only company that I backed specifically because of their stretch offerings (kinda) was Arc Dream for their Delta Green launch last year a) their rollout was weird b) they have built up huge trust that they can deliver (eventually) over many years.

  • 11:08 PM - MechaTarrasque mentioned gyor in post Shadar Kai Officially Elves now
Did they publish the results of the survey? Or is there just an assumption that the Shadar Kai as humans are the more popular option among players? I don't think they ever (or very rarely) release actual survey results; they might give us what they gleaned from the survey but don't expect that anytime soon. If it wasn't a question on the survey (and I don't recall, but I would be pretty surprised if it was), then it wouldn't be something they would be interested in hearing respondents views on. It is possible that if enough people complained in the open-ended question they usually have at the end of their surveys, they might have taken notice, but I think gyor is correct and SK being elves was already decided on.

Yes! Compare this book to the massive depth for settings we got in 2e. As I recall, that was the edition that cranked out such a huge volume of material (mostly setting material), with such poor quality control, that it drove the company to the edge of bankruptcy, and it would have gone over the edge if Wizards of the Coast hadn't swooped in at the last second. If you read Ryan Dancey's account of coming in to take over post-acquisition, one theme that pops up several times is "too much about your worlds and not enough to support ours." The setting material in GGtR is highly portable. You could easily pluck any of the guilds out of Ravnica and drop it into another campaign, with or without the others. That would be much harder to do if there were a lot of Ravnica-specific lore. I think leaving detailed lore to the DM's Guild is probably a wise move*. *Not to mention thematically appropriate.

So in someways is Sabrina, but it's UnPC in a that reinforces, or seems to, reinforce PC messaging. The Drow and Drizzt and even more so his father screams MRAs to many feminists if they saw it. There would be a frenzy. So the movie studios will make sure it never happens in a million years. I could be wrong, I just don't see it happening. I’ve seen you randomly bring up your personal politics in the form of MRAs in two threads (that I’ve noticed) in the last couple of days. Not sure why. Please don’t do that. This isn’t the place.

There would be a frenzy. So the movie studios will make sure it never happens in a million years. I could be wrong, I just don't see it happening. I know nothing about Driz or his father, but the point is that Handmaids Tale is a about a patriarchal government/ religion that has taken over the USA in which the noble families are given women (handmaids) to rape. There is nothing PC about it, yet it was produced by Hulu and is popular. EDIT: And it does not reinforce PC messaging. Thus, if the studios can except the subjugation and mass rape of human, american women - they can probably justify what ever in a fantasy society. PS - I have no idea why you mentioned Sabrina

They won't do Drizzt movies, the Hollywood Feminists would never allow it. Just look at how Drizzt's Dad deals with Priestesses vs males in the last Drizzt novel. If you put that into a movie they will flip right out. You will never see Drow in a major D&D movie, the Drow are just too in your face unPC by todays standards to make it in, and it's as unsubtle in it's way as the new Charmed is in the opposite direction. You seem to miss the popularity of The Handmaid's Tale.

I never said the sadomasochism was covert, I just found it funny that it's directed at symbol they intended to stand for the Patriarchy instead of the male feminist types on the show. I am confused. What's funny about that. I certainly hope you don't think you can't be a feminist and enjoy straight sex (kinky or not) at the same time? Nothing about Aunt Zelda's "session" with Father Blackwood indicated submission from her part, and even if she was, that's still not incompatible with being a feminist. (Actually, that scene was so chaste you could be forgiven for not being clear on what exactly happened). In short: Why do you think feminists would want to restrict themselves from either fighting and :):):):)ing the patriarchy when they can do both? Sex and power are different things.

Not a mindless tool no, she would be no use to him as a mindless tool, but her goal is to be his Queen. And Satan is not above using any idealogy for his needs or even playing them against each other. Honestly Satan seems smarter then everyone on the show, manipulating both their beliefs and ambitions to suit his plans. Also the relationship between Satanic authority figures and the women of the show is very sadomasochistic, with one lick the hoof of Satan and another indulging in BDSM with Father Blackwell. For a show about fighting the patriarchy, they seem more interested in having kinky sex with it. So, a few things here. First, the sadomasochism is hardly covert. They used Venus in Furs in the soundtrack, for crying out loud. Second, demanding complete tonal and intellectual consistency for what is essentially a CW/Berlanti show that was brought over to Netflix might be a little much. ("Oh noes, Supergirl isn't always exactly perfectly on point in its femini...

And the weirdest most ironic thing is Sabrina seems to do most of her fighting and magic to protect the males in her life from women, including killing the very souls of women. If you want to feature women as strong ( or at least active) and men as weak (or at least precoccupied with maintaining their appearance), Sabrina's foes pretty much gotta be female. Not sure I see what's "weird" or "ironic" about that.

The only male in a position of authority, aside from Satan who really isn't supposed to have a sex, as angels are genderless, is the high priest, but nothing in the show says a woman can't be high priest in the Church of Night and in fact it's clear that they can be. Did you quote the wrong poster? Where do I talk about gender and authority? What has Satan's chastity to do with prestige classes? (I do have to thank you for allowing me to ask that question :))

Curious to see how you reskin Warlocks and Sorcerers and Bards. I just uploaded the bard reskin; which is a young-Merlin type enchanter - bit of a charmer, part conjurer and part diviner, fey-trained illusionist type of caster. Like the Academician/Wizard, its not a heavy reskin. I have to polish-up my warlock , but i'm not completely satisfied with my concept for the sorcerer. I may go back to the drawing board for that one.

There's also the principal, Harvey's dad and Susie's dad—all of whom are in positions of authority and represent toxic masculinity in its various permutations. Rosalind's dad stands out as being emotionally intelligent, and Harvey as emotionally sensitive. It's certainly a feminist manifesto, but that is both justified and topical given the witchery premise.

So Blackmoor is kind of like Gloomwrought, but FR & Nentir Vale have a version in there world. Not exactly. The Greyhawk version bears no actual resemblance to the full setting; it's really just a name drop from the days when no one knew anything about any of these settings, a friendly nod to the other group as a small tribute and inside reference. The other two were both written by Arneson himself, so may actually be the same place, just different editions. It's intentionally vague and non-commital, largely because of rights issues. Some of the adventures were directly ported to the 3.x version, too. These aren't settings where canon is consistent. Indeed, the idea of "one true" version of the setting runs very counter to the ethos of the creators, who were bomebrewers by their nature and always knew that any published version would be modified to meet the needs of the table. "Your setting may vary" is the mentality, not ironbound canon. Like I said about Jakondor, I'd just add i...

For what it's worth eventually they seem to tone all that stuff done eventually and focus on the plot. And in some ways it is better then the 1990's show yes, but fans of the 1990's show might in some cases be disappointed by this show, as it is so different from the original. And you can't complete separate the politics of show from talking about it because it is so prominent within the show. Still, I am starting to enjoy the show so I'm not being a hater, just giving people a heads up. And I've decussed the fantasy side too and still main the Sabrina is more a Tiefling then a Half Elf.It's really not so different, we simply get to see much more of the "other side" that is background stuff in the Joan Hart sitcom. Hilda and Zelda are much the same. Sabrina is no less adorable in spirit and still wields a culturally relevant womanhood that is beyond her years. Harvey is still a sensitive guy. Everything is recognizable and well-translated.

But isn't that still something external not internal?
  • 03:33 AM - Parmandur quoted gyor in post WotC's Nathan Stewart Teases New D&D Setting Book in 2019
I think Blackmoor is apart of their Greyhawk or Mystara, Just in a different era or something, and if I included that, I would have to include every era in FR that is playable, and that is a long list, I edited my post to add Nentir Vale, and I'm not sure what Jakondor is, but does WotC own the rights to it? Because I could have added Hyborea, the setting of Conan the Barbarian, which would be cool, but D&D no longer has the rights to do it's TRPGs and hasn't for a long time. Blackmoor is, simeltaneously, it's own setting, part of Mystarra's past and Greyhawk present. Or all three, depending on what a DM wants it to be. Thing is, if you go to the DMs Guild, all of those minor settings (also Thunder Rift) are in the same "Other" bucket along with Mystarra, Birthright, Spelljammer and so on. The Known World and Birthright are about as likely as Jakondor or Blackmoor to get a 5E project, in other words.

OK, I got all of that, but they are not actually stated to be fiends or fey the show. They are something different / more than human (similar to HP really). That being said I understand why, in D&D terms, a tiefling makes sense.
