About freeAgent
Introduction:
Hi, I'm David. I live in the West Loop and am looking to find a Pathfinder group. I've got some previous Pathfinder experience as well as 2E AD&D, and I prefer games that focus on problem solving, boldly making mistakes, and not taking things too seriously. I've got all the rulebooks as well as Hero Lab (all content expansions).

@freeAgent - I think you are in the minority (nothing wrong with that at all) where you both refuse steadfastly to purchase physical books and do not seek... alternatives. It would be interesting to know how many people fall in that line. BTW, I applaud your stance of speaking with your wallet and avoiding the easy route. I do not have a problem with the physical books as I want both digital and physical content; but if I did not want the paper copies and had no way to purchase digital books, I do not think I would be able to hold fast to those morales. I love this system too much to chose all or nothing.

The problem with using D&D IP in movies is that the rulesets obviously don't translate and settings are more about building a sandbox than about a particular story. Since movies are all about stories and charaters, there's just not a whole lot "there". The most recognizable character in the D&D IP stable is Drizzt (and Companions) with Elminster as a distant second. The Drizzt fanboy in me would love to see a series of movies or a TV show that mirrors the books, but the realist in me knows they'd probably be terrible. Terry Brooks did get a chance to turn his Shannara books into a (terrible, IMHO) TV show, so maybe R. A. Salvatore will get a similar opportunity. I'd rather see a cartoon set in Eberron. Becaus it would make an excellent bridge between the rest of DnD, and the sorts of things people are used to seeing in modern cartoons. And it has airships, pros that of built in room for all kinds of genres and story types, warforged, halflings that ride dinosaurs, a mile high city of towe...

Well, being a big sandbox can be an asset that can be used for a franchise. My expectations are set at Transformers level, so we'll see if they can meet or exceed that. That's fair, though the basic PDFs are just that and don't contain all of the content of the core books. I don't particularly like being treated like a second-class citizen because I want PDFs. I'm with you on the PDF thing for sure. I didn't know if you were aware of the basic stuff though.

I have stopped purchasing physical copies of RPG products for the simple reason that they take up too much space. I either get it as a PDF or don't get it at all. Unfortunately, in the case of D&D 5E, that means I don't get it at all. The game sounds wonderful, but I will never see it or play it until I can get a PDF. WoTC has lost the battle. There are too many RPGs out there that are D&D competitors which are easily obtainable in PDF format. The easiest solution to the D&D availability problem for me is to simply not purchase D&D products. To be fair you can get Basic for completely free and actually play an entire campaign with it.
