I often think it's too easy to get into the TARDIS. A TARDIS is supposed to be the most advanced type of ship in the universe, so teleporting onto it shouldn't be easy. I wonder if she gave Kerblam! permissions or something?

Great list! I agree with you on Forgetful and Spendthrift. You can use skills with any attribute as long as the GM agrees, so intimidation and Disfigured would be a good combo for a strong character. A STR (intimidation) check with the disfigured trait would be a good combo.

There's another new class over on EN5ider, the 5th Edition Patreon, this week! Bloodweavers use the primal power coursing through their veins to enhance their own abilities, heal or bolster allies, and debilitate or kill their foes. Many fear them for their control over the substance of life but those that can see past this superstitious dread often find powerful allies. Recently on...

For the next two weeks you may put your promotional/publisher posts in the relevant game forum. 99% of the time the damage type won't matter, so you can deduct the SOAK from the total. The STR bonus applies to his base damage, not to the exploit, so it goes to the bunt damage should that info be needed. The times it will matter are if the target has SOAK to only blunt or only fire, in which case it could only reduce those portions of the total.

Generally speaking, SOAK (and immunities etc.) have to apply to all damage types. The non-SOAKing of armour is slightly awkwardly phrased, though, I'll admit! Basically, if you have *been* poisoned (gas, food, atmosphere, etc.), armour isn't going to help you. If the poison is on a weapon, then sure, armor will help. It's all about the delivery system.

I make that 14 DEFENSE. 3d6 is 11. 4d6 is 14. SOAK and DEFENCE are two different things. DEFENCE is how hard it is to hit you. SOAK is how much damage your armour lets you ignore.

So. Tomorrow is the date. I'm hoping to see a good selection of competitors. Last year our competitors were MortalPlague (IRON DM 2014) Myself (IRON DM 2013, IRON DM FALL 2002) Gradine Deuce Traveler (IRON DM 2012, 2015) Imhotepthewise Iron Sky (IRON DM 2009) LucasC Wik with PnPgamer and Leopold as alternates. But don't think it necessary to have participated before to give it a go. If you think you got what it takes as a DM/GM/Storyteller/Narrator to make your PCs sweat, your players cheer and your stories sparkle (but hopefully not your vampires), then get in the queue at 10 tomorrow (EST) and join in the fun. Again, its first come, first served as far as entries, with the exception of Deuce Traveler, who has a title to defend. Old deck hands don't get preferential treatment over ambitious up and comers.

Deuce Traveler and LucasC, you have 24 hours to post your entries to this thread. Please limit your entry to a title, a list of the ingredients used and 750 additional words. Be aware, also, that any description of those ingredients that you choose to include will count against your word total. Please include your list of ingredients at the beginning of the entry and please do not edit your post once it is submitted. Please refrain from reading your opponent's entry until after you have posted your own. You are on your honor to do so. I'll be helping someone move, so I might not make it, and I probably won't be available to fine tune things. So, if both of you can post to confirm that you can go just before that time and I am able to, you'll get your ingredients. If you don't have any by 6:01, we'll just have to schedule something for later.

@LucasC, out of curiosity what happens with your characters if you take the highest of the three physical defenses and simply go with the average opposed roll? (e.g. 6 = 3d6 = 10.5). And what happens to those same characters if you apply -2 for medium armor and -4 for heavy armor, and -2 for large and +2 for small? Ignoring the jedi bonus for now. Applying one relevant skill (if they have one) as normal for an attribute check. Here's what I get for the iconics: Sasha (AGI, medium armor) -- 5 (man, she's terrible!) Gorrat (STR, heavy armor, large, hardy) -- 10 Dr. TikTok (END) -- 10.5 Talik (AGI, acrobatics) -- 17.5 Ashonn (AGI, acrobatics) -- 14 Holmes (AGI, medium armor) -- 3.5 A range from 3.5 to 17.5 (call it 4 to 18). Heck of a range again. Holmes is an outlier, though, and I think Sasha's just a fairly poor build - few of them are able to make a 5d6 defensive pool, which is a character build thing. If they were built with defensive skills in mind, they'd be a bit better.

This is just a general discussion thread, not an announcement or anything. @LucasC expressed doubts about the latest DEFENSE formulation, so I'm opening this up to ideas - just in case someone sees something I don't. Things we need to be aware of: 1) I don't want everybody to be averaged so much that all the characters are the same as each other 2) There are concerns that wide ranging DEFENSE scores makes it hard to find appropriate challenges 3) I want some critters to be basically too tough for beginning characters to handle, and their DEFENSE to reflect that 4) I want SOAK to be a viable alternative choice to DEFENSE; some folks get hit more, but they can take more 5) It's important not to make a single attribute King Attribute; AGI is already important That said, here are factor which do, or have, played into DEFENSE: SIZE - big things are easy to hit, small things are hard to hit; conversely big things have more SOAK AGILITY - agile things can dodge well, clumsy things cannot PROTECTION - shields, deflection abilities, plus some spells make it harde...

They are good changes. My initial gut reaction to what the stats encompass: (might be way off here) Intuition - game wise used for random ideas, on the spot knowledge, searching/spotting. Logic - calculations and research knowledge. Pattern recognition, hacking/programming. Wisdom - ehhhh, I've never gotten wisdom in any other system, other than it's usually some sort of willpower or spiritual magic stat that also is used for spotting enemies for mystic reasons beyond logical reasoning... And being able to use old Chinese proverbs. Wisdom? There's no Wisdom! There's INTUITION, LOGIC, and WILLPOWER. Your guesses are fairly close - LOG is knowledge, education, reasoning; INT is empathy, perception, etc. It also means that INT can be used instead of AGI for ranged attacks (you use whichever is best, just like when choosing STR or AGI for melee). That de-emphasizes AGI as the uberstat (something LucasC has noticed before).

I think the 750 limit is good. Really forces you to be concise and creative. 6 ingredients, 12 really if you count the adjective that goes with each is about 3 too many to my thinking. No good. Linking 4, even 5 ingredients is sometimes ridiculously easy. 6 never is. That's why 6 is the baseline. IRON DM is designed to never be easy. And, incidentally, some ingredients are expressed in a different number of words (even one, occasionally). But it doesn't really turn the ingredient into multiple ingredients; rather, each descriptor serves to narrow down each ingredient. It focuses the available options, but the ingredient still is one thing.

So much to respond to! I will take a moment to discuss Shells and her arc though. I'll admit when writing that ending just felt like the obvious perfect way to end it. I didn't put any more thought into it than that. After reading your critique and spending quite a bit of time thinking about it, I'm more convinced than ever that it's the right ending. In fact, I couldn't disagree more strongly with your suggestion. I'm not sure it's necessary to go into it here, but I probably spent three times as many words writing about why it had to end that way than I did in the whole adventure. But I'm extremely grateful for the critique, because without it I wouldn't have spent that time and energy thinking about why I was making the choices that I was. The point is I had 750 words to convince you that it was the right way to end it and I didn't succeed, largely because I didn't even think that that might be necessary. The exercise definitely helps me work toward being a more deliberate and in gener...

OK, I'll play. At worst y'all can laugh me out of the place. :) It's usually not much like that. I've done a few of these, something like five or six years ago, and they've consistently been one of the most enjoyable - and positive - experiences on ENWorld. A few tips: 1. Watch your ingredients. Be clever with them - the cleverer, the better. But don't try and change the ingredient or stray too far from it in the name of cleverness. For example, if your ingredient is "an intelligent zombie" and you make the villain a sage ghoul, you'll be asking for trouble. 2. Connect your ingredients. As in, don't just have six ingredients floating in the adventure alone. If you can try and tighten your adventure so that, ideally, all ingredients connect to one another to form a coherent whole, you'll be doing great. 3. Edit, edit, edit. I write mine in notepad, go over the word limit, and edit down. As with all writing, the better you edit, the better you'll be. 4. Time...

Baumi- our focus at present is on delivering content via the web. We intend to create a PDF export, likely beginning with character sheets, but don't have a timeline on this yet. That's why I dropped Realm Works. Without an export feature of some kind, I won't subscribe to something like this. I have had far too many cases (in and out of the RPG world) of having data become unreachable after a company goes out of business or makes other changes. I'm not going to take the time to put a lot of effort into entering data into an online tool if I can't save a copy of it locally.

I will see how it's received at GenCon and then Acadecon (going to run it at both), and then, probably yes, of course I have no art for it just yet. As soon as it's ready, I'll shoot it over so you can look at it. I'm trying to make sure I hit several of the game rules that (IMO) help W.O.I.N. stand out from the pack. Countdowns, skirmish rules, exotic environs, and of course NEW, NOW, and OLD. I'd love to see it! The main things you probably aren't up to date with are the wilderness and space travel rules, and the 'doing science' skill challengy system.

  • 07:27 PM - Morrus quoted LucasC in post DEFENSE... again!
I was just about to post about that. Those penalties look much better. Something to think about perhaps... eliminate the armor penalty altogether and instead give armor a base Defense pool (maybe 2 dice, or 3 dice) and have that replace the characters stat pool. To get SOAK, you then rely entirely on armor. At lower character levels, it will likely benefit you (depending on where you set the armor pool) but as a character's level increases, they are likely to lose DEFENSE in place of SOAK. Second thought... Consider basing armor on either STRENGTH or AGILITY but not allowing ENDURANCE for this purpose. Characters already use END to derive HEALTH and using it for DEFENSE doubles up on its value. It also doubles up skills that add to END like Hardy. This skill now does double-duty adding to both HEALTH and DEFENSE. I added in the STR/AGI thing above; it's a little more complex, actually, but basically what you said. I've considered using armor as an AGI cap, but I'll test th...

  • 01:19 PM - Morrus quoted LucasC in post Playtest Feedback (last 4 weeks)
Careers Speaking generally, I think careers are too restrictive with too many requiring specific prior careers. Consider the Scout. You must have Military Academy to become a Scout. The abilities granted by Scout revolve around reacting quickly and being sneaky. It's not hard to envision non-military means to access these abilities. Thing is, I see it as a infinite number of careers, and they have roleplaying significance. The scout is just the name I gave it; I could have called it the "Military Scout". There's nothing preventing the existence of a non-military sneaky type. A Scout, however, is a guy who went through the military. I'm not fond of "generic" careers; I much prefer lots and lots of specific careers. They refer specific roles in the world, not to (like in D&D) sets of abilities. So the solution to that isn't to change the Scout, it's to create a non-military sneaky career. Of note, 6 of 8 characters have selected Military Academy as one of their careers and only be...
  • 12:38 PM - Morrus quoted LucasC in post Playtest Feedback (last 4 weeks)
The 2s are clearly abilities not increased from starting. So about 20% of their scores are whatever they started the game with. The 3s and 4s are similar though, in most cases, they are scores that were increased not because the player wanted to raise that ability, but because the increase came as a rider on a career that raised the actual score they wanted. The scores most of them actively seek to increase are at 7 or higher. This suggests that upwards of 60% of their ability scores are just stats they're tracking because its on their sheet but not things they have any active interest in. I'm totally fine with that. They're each interested in 40% of their stats. I don't want everybody to feel they all have to increase all of the stats equally. Again, result would be identical characters. It's fine that someone wants to be the clever character, or the strong one, or the accurate one, or the charming one. The problem lies if all characters are interested in the *same* stats. 3s...

  • 06:52 PM - Morrus quoted LucasC in post Brainstorming DEFENSE
The value could serve a purpose though couldn't it? The continual increase in both DEFENSE and ATTACK would mean a few thing: Over time, characters become appreciably more powerful than lower level characters (whether this is good or bad is a diff. question) Equal level characters retain the same likelihood of success as they progress - so a level 1 guy shooting at a level 1 guy might have a 50/50 chance. A level 8 guy shooting at a level 8 guy has the same 50/50 chance. Then you can use tactics to improve from there. Sure. What I meant was that if there was no difference in attack or defense values between any two level 8 characters, you may as well just have one stat: level. If they're all rolling 8d6 attack vs 8d6 defense, there's nothing that distinguishes the characters from each other.

You already have a mechanism in the game, that scales up with level, and is intended to answer the question of "Does this action succeed?" It is of course the Difficulty Chance. In this option, you'd simply assign a DC to hitting a stationary, Medium-sized target. Let's just call that Routine [10]. You could apply modifiers to it based on the situation, each increasing the challenge (moving +1 DC rank, small +1 dc rank, cover +2 dc ranks, etc.). In this option, a character doesn't try to get DEFENSE, characters focus on SOAK. I did consider that, and it does have a certain appeal. My main concern about it is that it pretty much eliminates the dodging/agile character type.

I like the concept of age having a character impact, but I am not a huge fan of the exploits. My players all wanted to be an age different than what their Career-derived age suggested anyhow, but with game stats tied to it, I had to approach allowing that cautiously. My vision was always that you'd play a character through his/her life, with big downtime periods, and the character would age. Like Kirk did, and like the Star Wars cast will have done come December. And I wanted the players to feel that, but not by penalizing them.

  • 05:07 PM - Morrus quoted LucasC in post Playtest Feedback (1/6)
The thing I think will cause me heartache is the spread. If I put in a critter with a fair shot at hitting the half of the party with 22-24 DEFENSE, the other half, who float in the 14-16 range, are going to be sure hits. The reverse is also true, a critter that has only a decent shot at a 15 will pretty much never seriously threaten the 24s. I think that's OK. 24's a little higher than I'd like, and I'll look at that, but we need to be wary of averaging everybody so much that all characters feel the same as each other. Someone with a low DEFENSE maybe needs some extra armor to compensate and SOAK up some of the damage he's taking, and stay in cover a bit more. Off the top of my head, I would start with the premise of who you want a critter to be a threat to, and pitching it at that, rather than critters who you want to only hit the weakest DEFENSE characters some of the time. A 24 needs 6d6 on average, and a 15 needs 4d6, so perhaps use things in the region of 5d6? Or 4d6 and have...

Here's how the higher numbers were arrived at: AGI 3d6 + END 2d6 + ACROBATICS 1d6 + PERCEPTION 2d6 + HARDY 1d6 = 9d6 * 3 = 27 +5 star knight DEFENSE bonus = 32 The 24s it went like this: AGI 4d6 + END 3d6 + ACROBATICS 1d6 = 8d6 * 3 = 24 AGI 2d6 + END 4d6 = 6d6 * 3 = 18 -2 size large = 16 +8 tower shield = 24 Ah, OK, I see the first misunderstanding. You only multiply the attribute dice, not all the bonuses. There's a bit of legacy reference to skills and bonuses still in there I clearly need to clarify! That first guy should be 24, the second guy should be 22, and the third looks right. I guess that's what happens when I post new playtest rules in the form of a forum post rather than a fully explained playtest document! :) The 24 is still pretty high; that +5 Star Knight bonus is significant. I might look at that more closely. I was thinking of making it a defensive stance - i.e. the Star Knight can stand there defensively and get the +5, but attacking removes it.
