I don't care what the creator has said, about whom. As long as the game is good I'll buy it. I think people need to learn how to separate the art from the artist. Its a pretty simple concept. Get over yourself. Lots of people in hollywood rape children- are you going to stop watching movies? Movies? No. Movies made by people who rape children? Yeah, I won't be watching them. If you're going to try and build a strawman I would suggest one of a sturdier construction. But since nothing outside of games matters to multiple people in this thread, MYFAROG is pretty cheap on Amazon right now. 10/10.

  • 04:57 PM - hawkeyefan quoted Ace-Azzameen in post Mearls' "Firing" tweet
Mearls sounds like he is gatekeeping a bit himself. How is he going to go about "firing" players? He's traveling the globe, meeting face to face with each of the gatekeepers, handing them a pink slip followed by a swift kick to the groin.

Mearls sounds like he is gatekeeping a bit himself. How is he going to go about "firing" players? How about, just be civil and don't be a jerk to ANYONE at your table. He doesn't have to make it into some noble social crusade- who's he trying to impress? He's not trying to 'impress' anybody. He's sending a clear message to the gatekeepers about their actual status. The "fired" part is poetic license.

Agreed, but I think that people that are parsing his statement to find reasons to dislike are missing the point. He didn't say that people who enjoy complexity or lore are bad fans, or should be fired from D&D. He said that those "who insist on gatekeeping via rules complexity and lore density" are the problem. And that's really the key. Insist, and gatekeeping. Those are words of exclusion. TLDR; I get the frustration, anger, and disappointment.Oh, I most vehemently agree with you and Mearls on the points that you raise here and in your elaboration on these points that I don't quote. My post only sought to observe that the expectation that Mearls should have been clearer with his meaning misses the emotional and ethical sentiment that spurred Mearls's tweets. Mearls sounds like he is gatekeeping a bit himself. How is he going to go about "firing" players? How about, just be civil and don't be a jerk to ANYONE at your table. He doesn't have to make it into some noble social crusade- who's he trying to impress? You know, it is truly sad that we have gotten to a point when showing common human decency, like standing up for a new co-worker who is being subject to harassment solely based on her gender, is now considered by some to be bad because they believe it is just trying to "impress" people. Doing the right thing is its own reward. Some lessons you learn when you are young are worth remembering.

  • 06:46 PM - Caliban quoted Ace-Azzameen in post Have You played In An Official D&D Adventurer's League Event?
I play maybe a few times a month at the local store... its mostly a fun experience. Most everyone is welcoming and nice, the people who run it are great. You do run into some colorful characters every now and then. This is AL's greatest strength and its greatest weakness at the same time. You have an opportunity to play with new people every event. This gives you the opportunity to introduce new players to the game, but some of those people ...well, there's a reason they aren't in a home game. :p

Thanks for the quick response. Paizo sounds like they have their act together much more than Wizards, at the moment. And I have to agree, as someone who has played the first two chapters of Dragon Queen, for the Encounters program, its very rough going. A two-hour time slot is not appropriate when the chapters each seem to be more like 3 or 4 hour affairs. You aren't necessarily supposed to play each chapter in one session. We've played through almost the entire HotDQ adventure at our FLGS. Most of the chapters took a few sessions to complete. Encounters is supposed to be an ongoing campaign. Expeditions is supposed to be adventures that you complete in a single 4 hour session.

As someone who doesn't play PFS, or even Pathfinder, but is interested in the behind the scenes details of organized play, what are the differences if you don't mind going into a bit more detail? I haven't actually played any PFS yet, but I've been investigating it recently. So far, it seems like there are reasonable online tools for scheduling events and finding out what's going on (i.e. http://warhorn.net/), you can actually buy the scenarios (cheaply!) and use them for at-home play if you like, there's an online system for tracking characters. I'm hopeful that the scenarios, being generally designed to be played in the time slot alloted to them end up playing better than the horde of the dragon queen stuff did for D&D encounters, since I didn't find those to really work well when carved up into two-hour chunks like they did for the weekly in-store events.
