About EthanSental
Introduction:
DM in NW Georgia - 5e currently
About Me:
Started playing back in highschool in the mid to late 80s. When my high school friends moved away for college I was lucky enough to start another group of friends in to the fantastic realm of roleplaying. 3 of us have been playing pretty much ever since with breaks here and there and swapping up DM chores as needed. Played mainly 2e, 3e, 3.5e, and now 5e with PF thrown in to replace 4e, but also includes a bit of Marvel superheroes and other game systems as well.
I enjoying painting minis when I have time but pick up the plastic minis as well.

  • 08:10 PM - Koren n'Rhys mentioned EthanSental in post Mentzer's Epic Worlds of Empyrea Kickstarter Launches For 10 Game Systems!
I'll be interested to see how it all plays out, for sure. I'd love a BECMI box set, but the price is too steep for my blood, unfortunately. It does seem ambitious, yes, but Frank seems to be trying to do it right and get lots of help. Some hefty pledge levels there though, for what you seem to get. YMMV. EthanSental: Darlene was the artist who did the big two poster hex map of Greyhawk from the original folio and box set - HUGE nostalgia factor for new maps by her. And just to point out, Tal'Dorei was a single hardcover book, I believe? This will be more akin to the old campaign box sets from TSR - multiple booklets, poster maps, etc. So much more expensive to produce.

Can't earn it back if it never hits the dmsguild :). Here's hoping it happens before people forget it existed! I'm hoping it does sell well enough to intice you all to do it again. Great point. By now--at least in the groups I frequent--everyone that's wanted to play through it pretty much has. I don't think anyone I know plans on buying it at this point. Hopefully the late timing is taken into consideration, if the sales are truly the main factor as to whether it'll be done again. (On the other hand, maybe the idea of an in-crowd-only adventure book will just be swapped for something less exclusionary, which could be cool).

  • 08:26 PM - aramis erak quoted EthanSental in post Get Ready To Pre-Order Warhammer Fantasy Roleplaying Fourth Edition!
Never read any previous editions of it, might have to check it out as well. Key setting elements: Basically Early Renaissance Europe (Think late Holy Roman Empire) with fantasy races added. Much social inequality Xenophobia is rampant Many names are either bad puns, either in German or in faux-German Magic is dangerous and drives people insane Unlicensed use of magic is punishable by death. Usually, the accused doesn't survive to the trial. Mob justice includes lynchings and burnings. Mechanically: 1E: lots of attributes, some 1-10, 1x 1+, and most 1-100. Skills boolean. Tasks 1d100 for attribute or less; Some require a skill to attempt, others gain a +10 or +20 for the skill. 2E: reduced attribute list, atts 1-100 except W and MP, which are 1+ and 0+. Skills are un-, base, +10, +20. Tasks are rolled on 1d100 for under attribute+skill mod (unskilled is vs 1/2 attribute). Both 1E and 2E presuppose use of a grid or minis on table, but are not so grid reliant as to make ...

One of the first bit of advice our marriage counselor gave my wife and I was to not use "You" statements as it tends to set the listener on the defensive to strike back verbally. Happening a bunch in this thread between various people a they single and an use You at each other. Cool it for a bit and moderate ourselves for a change? Thanks! I think it's great advice for everyone. There's enough suffering in the world without our help. We don't beed to add to it.

  • 05:19 PM - Mike Myler quoted EthanSental in post Mythological Figures: Miyamoto Musashi (5E)
I'm pretty sure Mike said Joan of Arc is next, though I'm not 100% sure. I have a build for her that I like and think people will get use out of, just working on the extra text right now. :D Enjoying the wrote ups. Quick question...he came up with the 2 weapon fighting style with the swords mentioned above but nothing stat wise shows this fighting style. Thanks! Aye. He came up with it but he's not really known for that being his style. I just came across that during my research and (for the like dozenth time in my life) been like "Whoa, Musashi. Whoa." Had to mention it. If you want to make it a thing for him, you can swap out the Defensive fighting style (drop his AC by 1), add in bonus action attacks with a shortsword (include that damage add), and lower his katana down to 1d8. :) I would increase the AC bonus for Master of the Sword to at least +2 and possibly higher to bring it in line with other reactions that do the same thing (e.g. Gladiator has Parry that adds +3 as a reaction) You ...

  • 08:15 PM - Saelorn quoted EthanSental in post Pathfinder 2's New Alchemist Class Previewed!
Kind of surprised that alchemist and oracle are most popular classes in PF1.I'm surprised about the alchemist. I'm not at all surprised about the oracle. The oracle is basically everything good about the sorcerer, but better. Better spells, more spells known, better class abilities, better stats and proficiencies. If you didn't want to go through all of the trouble of playing a prepared caster, the oracle was pretty much the only real alternative.

I was going to order a copy from the goodman games website but found when I went that it had sold out. That's good news to hear so it was received well enough to sell out and they are going to do a 2nd printing. Hopefully, they will get a better quality print run out of the 2nd printing and thus print more than they did for the first!

  • 11:38 AM - Aldarc quoted EthanSental in post Pathfinder 2 Playtest Preorders, Podcasts, & "Pathfinder 1.5"
Correct - I played PF for about 5 years to fill in the gap of 4e as our group didn't like it so I'm aware of its MO. It's that MO of over 2k in feats that ended up frustrating us and the need for herolabs to even keep up with stuff and switched to 5e. I'll wait until it comes out but hard to deny that feats are going to be a heavy part of the game on what paizo has stated. Ancestry feat, class, etc. Most definitely, but it appears that Paizo is aiming with PF2 to integrate a lot of related systems into a more cohesive whole (e.g., feats/talents, skills/saves/weapons/initiative, etc.), and feats appear part of that integration process. I am much more interested in the whole than I am the individual pieces being previewed. I kinda find the feats system of 5e unsatisfying so I'm intrigued by how PF2 will approach this issue. (For example, unless you are a Vuman, I think that you don't get as much 1st level character customization. Backgrounds are simple, elegant, but also meh and almost meaningless...

Am I reading this correctly? Fighter alone might have 30-40 class feats? I'll probably stop reading (and posting) anything pf2 based until the edition hits print next year cause I'm not in their market now with feats being given away like Halloween candy on the 31st. Even when it does hit I'm not likely to pick it up based on what I've seen so far. That's pretty much my first reaction. Do they really think that a metric ton of feats is a good thing?Pathfinder's MO as a off-brand D&D has always been its robust character customization. The "feats" are essentially renamed class talents. Here, my preference would be to wait and see rather than cast aspersions on what little info we have.

The math of the old system, and the way some feats interacted with it caused serious balance issues over the life of the system. Above red copied from the article - so the way some feats or maybe half of the 2K plus that were in the game cause serious balance issues. How can any game balance how 2000 feats might interact? Keep the number of feats in check in PF2 and I'll check it out, but if paizo plans on mass producing feats like they did in PF, I'm hesitant to invest cause I know I'll lose interest 2 years in in trying to keep up. If I was to try to do this, I'd be using machine learning to accomplish it. When you think about it, the number of possible combinations of character builds is too high to human test everything, and the number of different types of encounter are likely similar when you talk about different types of monsters and terrain, and well stuff. It'd be a monstrously large task to get the data collected if someone didn't think of doing it at the onset of game development, ...

I share your concern. But I think itís safe to assume that the core books wonít contain 2000 feats, and that the feats they do include in the core rules will be at least reasonably balanced against each other. So, worst comes to worst, folks like us can run ďcore books onlyĒ games. Thatís how I tend to run most games anyway, no matter the system - the core rules are all fair game, anything from outside the core is off-limits unless otherwise specified. Then Iíll tailor what outside sources I allow to suit the specific campaign.

Thanks for the reply and clarification. I've been enjoying the pdf links in the Kickstarter page. The samurai the crimson blade is a nice read and evocative in making the reader feel like the steam punk (arm) Japanese setting! just reading up on the iaijustu strike in combination with the dashing strike...holy wuxia type gut spilling strike :) katana, 1d12...plus 3d8 with the iaijustu strike means it a crit if you hit with the dashing strike....ouch!!! It does fit my mental image of samurai running past/through an enemy, the samurai stops while the camera pans to the enemy who is still in disbelief at the attack as they look down and see the blood start to spill like a fountain like a 70s/80s a Shaw Brothers king fu film :). Nicely done!! Thank you! I like Tomoe a lot but I think I'm invested most in Piasu--he's definitely not as brave as she is, but the erītokirā chapters are too cool (think space marines but hobgoblin steampunk samurai). It took FOREVER to get the dashing ...

I haven't seen my local game store carry much middle-earth stuff other than the first 2 books. Impulse Amazon buy from my hotel room when I ordered after seeing the weekly post on new stuff. Probably could have waited when I got home in 3 weeks since I won't be there when it arrive anyway. Physical copies of Rivendell for AiME won't be out for a while anyway. It was just put up for pre-order by C7 last week. It is in this article because the pdf for it is available now with your pre-order. If you ordered from Amazon, you may want to make sure it was not the TOR version of the book that you bought.

now I'm debating the color or b/w purchase option... might have to lean toward color for the added visuals. Is there many color art pieces in the book? Whoops missed this--the B&W (which is the one *I* prefer) is no longer available because I can't promise it'll be reliably reproduced. That said a lot of people are excited about the color and are really happy with the colorization. I do have to admit that it adds a lot of oomph to the Imperial Dragon and Oni chapters. :)

Wasn't it just last week that ENWorld ran an article showing concern for Oriental Adventures in this day and age? I'll add my voice to the quality of this product. Thank you sir! I said it somewhere in the (craaaazy huge!) thread but the design team was very deliberate and put a lot of thought into how to put the campaign setting together (including a review process with folks in Japan to make sure we hadn't accidentally gone astray). For the next two big books we've got a writer with some Japanese fluency to boot. :D Hiya. ...yeah...what he said. I'm confused as of right now, so I'm going to sit back and wait to see how this is digested by the community and the powers that be. That said, I was all for a new "Oriental Adventures"...so I'm definitely looking into this! Thanks! :) ^_^ Paul L. Ming Please do! The 2nd Kickstarter has a bunch of free things specifically for folks to evaluate the setting and such first before pledging. :) 95394 Cool that it's POD throug...

+28, +31...high modifiers seem to still be in the game. Not a fan of that anymore. Agreed, once they get over 10 it's problematic. Mods that large really require a mechanic that re-bases to 0 and suggest a higher tier of play. Truthfully, any mechanic that provides a modifier higher than the available results on the dice used to roll for resolution needs to be fixed such that you're either moving to a d100 type system or at least a resolution 20 and exploding 20. Just an opinion. But I don't think it's too hard to argue that if you're rolling a D20 and need to add +30 to it, that you're doing it wrong. KB

Beautiful art in the article. Never heard of the Faith rpg or the mechanic mentioned above but never articulated. Looking at the scfi Faith game its card based? Not sure how that works and probably many readers here since it only had 687 backers for its Kickstarter funding. Looks like a good read for that setting that could be a gold mine of ideas...just not sold on the card mechanic aspect. Hi! One of the game creators here :) FAITH is card based only. DCA can be played with cards or with dice. The whole point of the system is to grant more player agency and allowing players to manage their luck (if they play smart they can choose when to succeed at the expense of probably losing at something else later on ó the trick is to know where to put their energies). You can watch a pretty comprehensive video on the system here: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=xIWrtf6QptE Card mechanics are really off-putting to most RPG players we have meet, dice seem intrinsic to rol-playing to many people. So we have ...

Was the math not balanced across all 20 levels on PF1 for it to be a talking point in the presentation? I'm thinking this is a reference to 5e's bounded accuracy mechanics. As we all know, PF1 had a diminishing return on pretty much any low-level ability, spell, monster etc. once you got close to level 10. A huge portion of the game basically became obsolete and non-threatening. I'm assuming this statement is meant to imply that they will be using a different scale of bounded accuracy that goes from +1 to +20 rather than just +2 to +6.

  • 04:03 PM - Jester David quoted EthanSental in post From 7 Action Types To Pathfinder 2's New 3 Action Economy
So if you can already attack 3 times at say third level, what's thenfighter doing at higher levels? I'm asking for someone who might have heard it or read it cause I'm not interested enough in their game design to read it myself. They haven't said yet. I imagine, they hit more accurately on their second or third attack or can do other effects such as pushing, tripping, and the like. Likely also depends on the type of fighter. Quite honestly, stop using the OGL and create your own game. WoIN did it and it's a nice system with less development staff. The OGL is just a licence that allows you to share rules. It's not a ruleset by itself. You're referring to the SRD. But, if Paizo did decide to drop the OGL/SRD they wouldn't be able to use things like drow, ankhegs, black dragons that breathe acid, reptilian kobolds, tieflings, and a lot of stuff that's just part of their world.
