Vittero helps clear fallen leaves and a few weeds from the circle as Taylar records its detail. The circle is about a pace and a half in diameter and the main design is an eight pointed star. The point of the start facing this facade is a different color than the others. As the two are working about the circle a strange breeze picks up creating a tiny heat vortex that carries away some of the...

As you approach Oleg's Trading Post, a cry of alarm goes up. The Trading Posts' 30-foot wide wooden gate slams shut. Moments later, you are greeted by the sight of four men armed with longbows, pointing at you. “Halt! Who goes there?” one of the men shout in challenge.

About Tellerian Hawke
Introduction:
Die Hard 3.0 / 3.5 Player
About Me:
I started playing D&D during the Thanksgiving holidays of 1979, using other people's books. My parents bought me the AD&D Player's Handbook in Christmas of 1980. Then, I got my first D&D Basic Set (the Tom Moldvay red cover, with Erol Otus artwork) in August of 1981. Ah, humble beginnings, and fond memories. My first DM was my dad, and bless his heart, he had no clue about where to start. Our first adventures were awkward, to say the least.

If you are curious as to the whole story about my D&D origins, I wrote a memoir about it on my blog:
https://overthetopepicroleplaying.wordpress.com/2015/08/23/memoirs-part-one-how-i-started-playing-dungeons-dragons/

1979 was 5th grade for me. By the time I was in 8th grade, I was playing 1st Ed AD&D, which I stuck with all through high school. (I graduated in 1987.)

In the early 90's I switched to Second Edition, and later to 2nd Ed Skills & Powers, and then I even became a play-tester for 3rd Edition, which was an experience that I must say really endeared me to that particular edition of the game.

I have also written a skeletal framework for my own RPG, although it has never gotten to the playtest stage. I might revisit it one day soon, but in the meantime, I have a lot of other irons in the creative fire. I have an unfinished novel to think about, as well as a non-fiction book I'm writing that covers my family's genealogical record.

I'm a librarian by profession; I hold a master's degree in English, and a master's degree in Library Science, which, in librarian-speak, makes me a subject specialist. I'm what's known as a "Humanities Librarian." As such, I also have a list of ideas for academic papers that I plan to write, and since these are peer-reviewed items that concern the betterment of my career, they form one of the principal reasons why my novel and game system are still languishing on the shelf.

My longest running campaign ("The Fearless Five") was from 1999 - 2005, and it ended up going into epic levels. I pretty much quit running it when I got married, because at that point, my life became super-busy because of my transition from bachelor-with-lots-of-free-time, to husband / head of household / homeowner, and shortly thereafter, father-of-two. That's the main reason I never played 3.5; I had purchased all of the core 3.5 books, and some of the supplements, intending to eventually "switch over"; but a whirlwind romance, and subsequent marriage, cut those plans short. Thus, when I quit playing in 2005, despite having the 3.5 books, all of my knowledge and expertise was still grounded in the 3.0 material.

In July of 2014, at a family reunion, two of my cousins (who had been part of the Fearless Five campaign) expressed a desire to play again, albeit via the internet, using Play-By-Post. So, I made a private, Google Site webpage, scanned the bulk of my old notes, house rules, maps, and character sheets into PDF format, and put it all on the web. I am still running the Fearless Five PbP on that site, although I have plans to move it here, to ENWorld, in the very near future. Since the PbP began, I have slowly been adapting my campaign to the 3.5 rules set, although I must say, I don't agree with some of the changes they've made. So I guess you could say that I am running a 3.0 / 3.5 hybrid. (3.25?)

I came to this website because I wanted to refresh my knowledge, and have someplace to discuss my hobby with others. I was on ENWorld way back when, during the Eric Noah era, and during the first years of Morrus' stewardship also. I used to frequent the site, because I loved keeping up with Blackdirge's custom monsters. At any rate, I enjoyed the site back then, and it stayed with me in my memory, so I found it again, and here I am.

The last two things that I can think to tell you about me, with regard to this mutual hobby of ours, is that I am now, and always will be, a die-hard Greyhawker, and that I like to use Lego minifigs as miniatures, because there's no painting involved, and the figures can be readily modified. If you'd like to see what that looks like, click on the link below.

If possible, Tor will charge the Blighter who made the sonic attack; he will augment his charge with Way, using Thump (or whatever the higher level version of thump is) to make his shield bash more effective. As before, if he can knock his opponent down, he will follow up with a quick sword stab to the abdomen. As Tor is charging toward the original Da'Roneh formation, his intended target succumbs to blindness, but closer is another one of the Headhunters who seems just a deserving of a shield bash. In order to remain unseen, Merin will burn the nearest Blighter, using the Phoenix Feather to augment the attack. If possible, Merin will target a Blighter who is already dazed. Being physically unable to see exactly where the enemies are located due to the distance and foliage, Merin trusts to his paranormal senses to find his desired target. Being that his ability to manipulate Way is much greater than his ability to analyze it, Merin misidentifies his most powerful target and feels that one of the Headhunters that have moved in on Vadin is it. Though not who he thought he was targeting the new target should benefit Vadin, as he is in the process of being overwhelmed. After brief discussion, posting for @Tellerian Hawke who is busy with RL. When Taylar thumps the water it creates a concussive wave that travels out from his hands toward the muddy patch of water, as the patch continues to drift downstream. Also, it produces a very interesting sound. So interesting that Taylar thumps a second time as Vittero joins him to perform the same task for himself. Sadly, no fish or reptiles surface after the intrusion. After observing the results of Taylar's and Vittero's acts upon the water, Maka nods his head, confirming his suspicion. He conveys to the crew that the muddied patch of water is due to some earlier activity upstream. It could be a herd of game animals or people. Also, he adds that he thinks the crew should move on and finish their task at hand and rid themselves of the two horses before pursuing any further investigation. He would hate for the crew to lose the horses after the effort made to retrieve the stolen one.

When Taylar and Adisakti walk close enough to be seen by the Nashurins, Taylar gives a battle cry and charges forward, being the signal to attack. Raven Elk moves into his desired position from the opposite direction, while Vittero and Maka close from the hill tops, preparing to fire their bows. Taylar and Adisakti are about 5 paces from the enemy when they charge (~30'). Raven Elk is about the same distance on the opposite side. Maka and Vittero are each about 7 paces on opposite sides left and right. The Nashurins, all unsling their bows and prepare to fire at Taylar and Adi. • 06:26 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Day 258: Maka
As Raven Elk moves off to gather the goods of the trees, Maka will move to the edge of the paved area and travel its border hoping to shoot some game before the light of day completely fails. Effectiveness: Empathy (Divination Task) + Mind + Knowledge + Commercial + d100 This active task is applied to finding and identifying animals by their passage. The specificity of the information known is determined by the rarity of the animal. The base score without the addition of the random roll represents the passive knowledge to notice the presence of an animal or the tendency of the area to contain such. A minimum rank of 90 is need to passively notice edible sized varmints. The addition of the random roll represents an active search. Success is determined by meeting or exceeding the predetermined rank requirements of the Encounter Table. Maka: 20 + 19(empathy) = 39 + 82(d100) = 121 Maka moves westward, away from the direction of the lake, which is the direction Raven Elk and Vittero traveled. He leave...

I know very little of the gods. I mean, look at me. I'm some sort of sick and twisted perversion. They laughed at me as I was created. Allowed the wicked ways of my very being. Formed from some unholy amalgamation. Against the very foundation of what any civilized society views as natural. Kuvarious realizes he spun of course of the topic a little, trying to collect his thoughts. I aim to do what is right be my logic and needs, not by what society dictates. Emudre looks at Kuvarious. "Who told you those things!?" she says furiously. "Whoever it was, I am certain they were wrong! No, although I may disagree with you on many things, I don't think of you that way. If society has told you those things they're wrong! You are not bound by your ancestry, your appearance or the position of your birth!" She pauses to catch her breath, and then says more gently. "I hope in time you realize the power of your choices are worth so much more than the lies others have told to you. Yes, society may ...
  • 11:08 AM - Diarmadhim quoted Tellerian Hawke in post The Heroes of Dyvers Chapter Six
The first two days of our downtime I spend in my room, coming out only to train, eat, or use the privy. If asked, I am writing out several letters and plans of action. The first, how to spend my time during this downtime (classes, enchantments, etc.). The second, prioritization for my homebase and teams, including new buildings, land acquisitions, and hiring of additional teams. Letters to my family in Furyondy and any heads of cities/states I or my family might know, detailing the current situation we've uncovered with the forces of evil and chaos. I also write a letter to Lord Margull detailing the same and covering what we found in Skorane. Partway through the third day of our downtime, after having told the others of Lady Abigail's request and learning that the Helm of Veldomar bears no relation to the staff we are to find, I cast Endure Elements and then summon forth a Phantom Steed, riding hard in a straight line toward Dyvers. Recalling the map that hangs in my study, I know that as long...

  • 05:43 PM - jmucchiello quoted Tellerian Hawke in post PbP games: what works and what doesn't?
To each his own :) I think you’re missing out. :) I have been playing D&D since 1979, and I turn 49 years old next month. And let me tell ya, technology like this has greatly improved my access to and efficiency of gaming. I am a busy professional, with very little time for tabletop sessions, so PbP is the main gaming outlet for me. So doing it this way allows me to play on the go, during lunch breaks, or whenever I can spare a few minutes. LINE app doesn’t spam you with ads; the only notifications I get are the ones for actual messages from my players. But I get it, it’s fun being a Grognard, lol (no offense); I’m one, too, just in a slightly different way, lol. :D Dude, I'm playing in 15 different PbP games because I'm 50 and have no time for face to face (other than 4 hours a week on Fantasy Grounds). I don't need notifications to keep track of games. I just have two (out of 40-50 or so) tabs open in Chrome ALL THE TIME. On is the Play-by-post Center subforum where I can click of playing t...

The party members have never actually given concrete answers to this question. The aid that Abigail has provided thus far are out of gratitude for the blow struck against The Steading, and as a token of her good will. Lathir nods graciously to his hostess. "Respectfully, I must decline your request to swear allegiance. I have given my word to my patron, and though her interests are aligned with Bahamut's, a man cannot serve two masters. I will aide you to the utmost of my capacity, nonetheless. When Lathir is preparing to leave, Ellis happens to be there. Lathir informs him of his intentions, and Ellis informs him that traveling that way will be slow, and time consuming. Ellis realizes that Lathir wants to commune with nature and the environment, rather than traveling by magical means, and therefore, he offers the aid of his friend, Zallmar, an Elder Roc, whose flight speed greatly exceeds anything that Lathir could achieve on his own. NOTE to DM: As you are familiar, I instinctively add my real...

Sarvek’s countenance hardens as he considers what has transpired. After several tense moments, he meets the gaze of his comrades, and says; ”We showed them mercy, but the gods have clearly judged them and spoken against that mercy. This was no mere accident, that we should encounter a fierce, formidable, malevolent force such as this, and escape with our lives, whilest those most deserving of swift justice are devoured in the blink of an eye. There is no doubt in my mind, this was a subtle reminder, from the powers-that-be, that we must refrain from our personal sentiments, and keep our eyes fixed on our duty, and upon the letter of the law.” Emudre responds, "Only a cruel god would use a creature such as that to accomplish their aims; if some being of judgement seeks to harden our hearts, I will fight against it!" She lays her hand on her holy symbol, eyes flashing,

  • 08:48 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Day 257: The Ninth Day Northward
Taylar nods and replies, "Raven Elk brings up a good point about our limited space... What do the rest of you think? Should we return home and resupply to come back, or abandon the idea of finding the Keep of the Rising Sun and look for our adventure elsewhere?" Maka asks the other party members: "... I don't like the idea of going back to The Outpost, having gotten so close to the Keep. I say we push on, and keep looking for it." Vittero cracks his knuckles and takes a deep breath. "We have now come 9 days northward, by my running tally as I am keeping track of the date. As I have it, we are 17 days in the season of Shiftings. If we have to go and return it will push us into Drenchings, and that means bad weather. I imagine that this high in the mountains, it would also be cold. We should be 3 days north of the East Pass as the crow flies. I say we look around diligently in the morning, then revisit the question tomorrow afternoon." When he has time Taylar will meditate on the unknown metal ing...
  • 08:27 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Day 238: The Bribe
Sannit does not pick up the bag, leaving it where it is. He says to the Seekers, "I suppose this is some kind of bribe for us to leave the valley without confronting them. We never agreed to that so we're not bound by it if we don't accept the bribe. It doesn't seem fair to attack the Da'Roneh and not the Deviard so I say we investigate their village anyway. If they're hostile we can fight their warriors and leave the rest in peace, but we'll have crippled their ability to prey on others. On the way back we can pick up the tin. Does anyone object?" Merin says, "I don't trust it. I think that even if we took the bribe, and left them alone, they'd see it as a sign of weakness, and follow us, and attack us anyway, probably in our sleep." Tor nods. He then says, "I would normally honor such an attempt at truce, but I am in agreement with Merin, and moreover, I cannot leave them to prey upon others, as Sannit so wisely mentioned. We should launch a focused, preemptive strike, and let them know, in...

  • 05:13 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Days 247 - 249: The Mountains
The crew breaks camp at first light, leaving the road and traveling northward along the eastern face of the mountain range known as The Spine of The Wold. At such elevation, the temperature is much cooler, being warm during the day and mildly cool at night. The eastern face receives a slightly greater amount of rain during the year than the western face, so the trees are a bit larger, often obscuring any view of the flatter lands farther east. Though travel by people along the Spine's ridge is rare. Animals must travel it more frequently, for the crew is able to follow definitive game trails with relative ease. The land and skies are teeming with life, but all creatures tend to keep their distance, except small birds and reptiles, common insects and spiders, and occasional varmints. The myriad of small reptilian life generating new fascination for Adisakti. Taylar... will search for ores and metals, making iron his priority. Maka nods in agreement with Taylar. He will also look for ores as he prog...

Sarvek takes a hint from his fellows and follows suit, leaping onto his horse for a quick getaway. As he does so, he shouts, “Adrin! Emmie! Don’t get too close! This creature is far too deadly! Flee while you still can! You can’t help the boy without putting yourself in mortal peril!” And having said that, Sarvek flees as best he can. Shillaadrini adds, "Edmure! Forget it. The boy is lost. Run!" With that, Adrin takes Sarvek's advice and neglects the boy as lost. He hopes Edmure follows suit, as he prepares to gallop his horse.

"Waterstone," Maka says, out loud, to no one in particular. Maka: 17 + 17(konokoro) = 34 Day 244: 34 + 22(d100) = 56 Day 245: 34 + 95(d100) + 72(luck) = 201 Day 246: 34 + 97(d100) + 50(luck) = 181 At his current skill level, Maka may search for Slate, Flint, Bloodstone, Sunstone, and Heartstone without the use of a conduit. Taylar was searching for ore, so those would overlap with the same end result. Though Maka has recalled some legend of a substance called Waterstone, he greatly lacks the skill needed to divine for it. Maka searches prove somewhat productive have the first day. That first day, the stones refuse to speak to him. The second day he finds and sizable mass of slate. By picking up the large stone and dropping it against others, the crew is able to retrieve 58 pieces of slate. The third day Maka locates a sizable rock that produces 7...

  • 06:06 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Day 238: Second Combat Sequence, Tor
Tor: 34(attack) + 25(fury) + 36(precision) + 65(d100) = 160 Headhunter: 26(defend) + 30(defense) + 28(konokoro) + 55(d100) = 139 Damage: 160 - 139 = 21% * 8 = 2 Mind: 5 - 2 = 3: dazed Fall: 160 - 139 - 30(balance) + 10(size differential) = 1 Tor: 62 + 72(d100) = 134 HH: 22(conditioning) + 34(fury) + 30(quietude) + 60(d100) = 146 Tor, due to his sheer size, is able to knock the Headhunter from his feet and cause further non-lethal damage, but his sense of balance and aptitude with manipulating mechanical W...

  • 03:39 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Day 238: Re-Engaging the Enemy, Merin
• 05:03 PM - MacConnell quoted Tellerian Hawke in post Days 224 - 241: Boga City
During the remainder of the Harvest Season, room and board is included as part of the wage agreement, but nightly tavern visits are not. There are several tavern of varying types within the city, even several within a single district. The Crew hears a multitude of languages within the walls but mostly Centrin, which is the official language of Boga City. Taylar is, at first, able to communicate with more people than the others since there is a significant Maldrog population. Based on character personality and health 386 coins have been deducted from the party total for the tavern visits. Taylar suggests climbing equipment, heavier blankets if needed, food, some kind of writing utensils and paper to record interesting points of note on their path. He will inquire among the friendlier patrons of the tavern to see if anyone has experience in the Spine and if they have any useful information. Taylar learns that climbing equipment can be acquired but should not be necessary as the ruins, all of which a...
