You might find it fun to download one of the "Hardest mazes" to solve and use it as your dungeon. I made one that is a circle with the tower of an archmage at the center that the players had to get to. It has random teleports within it, is considered to be a massive construct that is aware and will defend itself. It is within a sphere that prevents, flying, tunneling, climbing over the outer wall...

I prefer story enhancing over the term flavor. In the game we are telling a collective story, not baking tarts for Sunday tea. How much an item enhances the story largely depends on how many times it can be used. A single use potion. A wand with five uses. A ring that works X per year. ........................ X per month. ........................ X per week. ...........................

I began playing with my older brothers at the beginning of 2e, the same time that Shadowrun went 2e. However, my brothers did not bother with 2e as in their words 2e was nothing more than 1e minus the UA and the addition of material from The Dragon. So thank my mom from telling the boys to either let me play their rpg games.

jgsugden I also liked the ad&d multiclass, however, it was very slow compared to single class characters. Dividing experience between two classes gave you versatility at low levels but at higher levels you were just weak. In my opinion this is why the classes had such a disparity in the amounts of experience that had to be earned in order to gain a level. It encouraged players to play a mentioned...

Nebulous In game your starting HP is 10x health/con. Each time you gain a level you add your health/con score to the total. If you were playing a paladin with health 15 at first level you would have 150 HP. I do this because a character is supposed to be heroic and not die from a single blow. I also have added weapons skills which increase critical hits. If you have blade 5 (any blade...

Draegn It can also be attached to an arquebus. Attaching a knife to a pistol is kind of a silly thing to do, but pistol-swords were a real thing, so if somebody wanted to build that, it would probably use the stats of a pistol or a longsword (depending on how you used it) which would effectively be the same stats as a pistol with a one-handed 1d8 "bayonet". (Or 1d6 for a shortsword/scimitar version.) If you just wanted to hold an unattached bayonet in one hand and attack with it, that would be some kind of improvised weapon, maybe doing 1d6 damage (analogous to trying to jab someone with just the point of a spear).

  • 01:14 AM - Slit518 mentioned Draegn in post Let's talk about your homebrew world!
oreofox - I too use half-orcs to represent orcs in my world. And your story of the Dwarves who can't grow beards reminds me of a group of Dwarves I made for my homebrew modeled after Buddhists, kind of. Every time the Dwarf sins, it shaves it's beard. So Dwarves with stubble sinned maybe yesterday, Dwarves clean shaven sinned recently, and those with large beards must be saints. Draegn - I too have rules for multi-racial characters. Half-races are a bit easier I find. FXR - Savage Lands? Why does that sound so familiar? Like the Steam game? Was there a D&D source book out on it? Your story about the Progenitors reminds me of the Sumerian story about the Anunnaki creating the first humans. And the story of the ogres and giants being bastardized children of the Progenitors reminds me of the biblical stories of fallen angels mating with earth women and giving off the Nephilim offspring. I like the links to world mythology you have there. I'm liking the world lore thus far that everyone is sharing. It is cool, and interesting to see all the creativity of the community. And I hope to read others! In case any of you are wondering, I have posted in a thread about my homebrew a while back. Draegn it might be that this was the Intention or the Basic Moral code the original creators applied. But as i am not intermingling reality with fiction to Derivate a Moral danger because soem Monsters are named devil, i also not have to stick to the same clean modern ethics the Inventors of D&D had intended for the game when creating my own game scenarios, as i posted already 1 post above, depending on the PCs wanting to play in such a scenario. I also think this is pretty much individually, it is liek soem people like watching horror movies and some hate it, some see the devil if a Dragon appears in a Cartoon for Kids on TV.

  • 06:10 AM - Quickleaf mentioned Draegn in post Describe the Nerebdian Vast (48th layer of the Abyss)?
... black sun hides behind the red sun most of the time, and the red sun bakes the land in merciless heat. But, when the black sun appears, everything exposed on the surface is scoured and blasted with deadly radiation that destroys and mutates all that it touches. Blood-drinking cacti. Fields of petrifying decay where living beings are slowly transformed to sand, pieces of them sloughing off slowly and agonizingly. Razorvine. Lots and lots of razorvine. Killer tumbleweeds that absorb tormented souls like a Devourer. Legions of the damned forced to labor under the sun, building a ziggurat from sandstone. The ziggurat is a mile high, but it crumbles as fast as the laborers can build it, and it is an eternal futility. Malevolent, sentient canyon labyrinths whose walls and paths shift, trapping those within them. Maybe more, if I have more time. These are great, thanks Schmoe! And you totally beat me to it with the malevolent shifting canyon labyrinths! Building off Draegn's suggestion to look at the Tarim Basin for inspiration (where mummies were found), I can imagine preserved tribes, caravans, or even settlements at the bottom of the dry sand pits. These underground "sand tombs" might have portals/conduits of some type to Shaddonon the shadowy 49th layer. If petrification happens, I could see shadow fiends or night hags scouring the wastes acting as saviors with the ability to reverse the petrification entirely...or just in part...the better to torment or negotiate for the souls of the trapped. Also mirages. There's a lot of cool things you can do with mirages: A mirage hides a town so that no one outside the town can find it. It is gradually "lost" from the world. A traveler is seen in the distance, shimmering with the heat. The image briefly becomes the grinning, black face of Graz'zt, but then it is gone, leaving observers to wonder if it really happened. A mirage conveys a vision of some calamity to come. A mirage gradually s...

  • 04:53 PM - Justin Fike mentioned Draegn in post Share Your Thoughts On My Warlock Houserules
... arguably Warlocks strongest feature. They are the most flexible way that a character defines what their Warlock does. This way a player can "specialize" their Warlock as a spell caster by investing Invocations in additional spells like Bane and Slow once per long rest, but doing so means they lose out on utility or power options in exchange. I've been persuaded on the CHA to hit and damage. It's too strong and not really needed. At this point my baseline for Pact of the Blade is Medium armor and shield prof gained at lvl 3, multi-attack gained at level 6, Pact weapon feature can apply to two weapons of the same type to enable dual wielding. That's enough of the essentials to allow a Bladelock to function without multiclassing if that's what the player wants, and if they want to specialize in melee combat further then multiclassing is the best way to do that. So that means removing the three added invocations since they're no longer needed, which helps cut down on bloat anyway. And Draegn I heartily approve of any efforts to make Warlock's patrons have a real, in-game impact and consquences. If you've found a way to do that that is fun for your players then I say roll with it. Without having seen one of your games I'd be worried about making a Warlock player afraid to use their powers. In my game I ask my Warlock players to work with me on creating a bio for their Patron just like they do for their character (his/her/its history, personality, and goal) and then I find ways to apply that to the story. I love having a Warlock in the party because if I have a plot hook or quest that I really want them to explore I can usually find a way to tie their patron's desires into it. It's not railroading if its still player story choice, right? :)

  • 07:34 PM - Derren quoted Draegn in post Firearms
77IM Could the bayonet be used one handed if not attached to a musket? Depends on the bayonet. The first plug bayonets, while looking like a knife, lack a handle so are awkward to hold. Socket bayonets are made to go around the muzzle and have no handle at all. Only very late in the development were sword bayonets which were supposed to be usable as sidearm. Draegn Attaching a knife to a pistol is kind of a silly thing to do, but pistol-swords were a real thing, so if somebody wanted to build that, it would probably use the stats of a pistol or a longsword (depending on how you used it) which would effectively be the same stats as a pistol with a one-handed 1d8 "bayonet". (Or 1d6 for a shortsword/scimitar version.) There were a lot of pistol-X variants made in the early days of firearms where the range was very short and reloading even more of a hassle. Pistol-shortsword, pistol-mace (the mace is on the handle and you flip it around after shooting), pistol-handaxe or pistol-buckler.

77IM Have you considered deafening effects from firing firearms? Either temporary or permanent. I have not, because it wouldn't be in-genre.

https://www.shootinguk.co.uk/answers/noise-induced-hearing-loss-77421 This was studied on firing outdoors. Firearms discharged indoors are worse due to the sound waves being bounced back by walls and other obstructions. I see no reason why there should not be a temporary deafness condition or permanent for long term usage. If 77IM's firearms can be heard 600 feet away, what of the chap who fired a musket held up to his cheek? One could apply the effects of the deafness spell, save of be deaf for one minute. Again Knock and Shockwave don't cause hearing lost. Add hearing lost to all thunder damage and I would get behind you.

  • 02:03 AM - Nebulous quoted Draegn in post Three wizards against two adult dragons
If you have blade 5 (any blade between 15-30 inches) anytime you roll a natural 15 or higher it is a critical which does depending on roll 2x-5x damage plus possible special effects. So you can take being stabbed 6 or 7 times but the guy that hits you for a critical, you know that he needs to go down. Characters also have additional attributes one of which is quickness. Unless they have rolled very badly even at first level they have 2 or 3 melee attacks per melee phase beginning at first level. Magic is different in combat, depending upon the "level" of spell each can nova low level spells or have a few higher level ones. Wh...

  • 08:43 PM - Nebulous quoted Draegn in post Three wizards against two adult dragons
Nebulous The hirelings will be carrying daggers, hand axes and any tools which might double as a weapon. This is due to the local Count's orders on what may or may not be carried within the city. The characters do have an opportunity to hire help from the Wyvern's Wing Inn and Tavern if they choose to. There are 100 orcs in four equal groups. One at rest, one on guard, one patrolling no man's land, the last securing supplies by any means. The female dragon has 323 hp 22 ac the male dragon has 285 hp 21 ac with one more melee attack than the female and does more damage. Ok then! That changes everything. Lol. This is a highly formidable force of orcs. Sure, a few fireballs and lightning bolts can wipe out a vast majority, but the orcs are gonna slaughter the hirelings armed with daggers if they engage. You also have a force of 25 orcs to sweep in to flank after the PCs think they're all dead. Also, you have significantly bumped up the dragon's hit points and AC from the baseli...

I prefer to give my players the opportunity to use their imaginations. When describing a person or place my goal is to use a single paragraph for important persons, less for a minion. Music, I let my players play what they like, though I prefer symphonic music over songs. Several times the lyrics have caused hilariousness. I ask a player to respond to a npc and as they begin to speak the stereo blares "You're going to burn in hell". These times signal break time. Judas Priest? Or Twisted Sister???

  • 03:09 AM - Abstruse quoted Draegn in post Shadowrun Sixth World Beginner Box Review
@Abstruse I am guessing that this might happen; from what you have seen in the character dossiers would it appear that concentrations and specializations will be in place for extra edge? For example: firearms, pistols, ares predator 5 The only character with a specialization is the troll street sam Rude, and his specialization just seems to add extra dice to the dice pool like previous editions.

Karl Kombatmage "Das ist umglaublich!" :p I'm going to review it just for my YouTube channel, but one of the first 6e sourcebook is the media sourcebook No Future, and Karl Kombatmage gets a nice feature in it. @Abstruse It appears that the karma pool of 3e which was replaced by edge is now a smaller edge pool, yes? Ehhh...not really, but the distinction requires history of the system. The Karma Pool in 3e was meant to be a very small resource that grew as you gained experience (one tenth of all the Karma (aka XP) you received went to upgrading your Karma Pool) and gave you special advantages like re-rolls, extra dice, stuff like that. It was carried over with modifications from 1e and 2e. It evolved drastically for 4e into Edge and became a more important tool as it became its own special attribute, the pool was larger, and it refreshed more often. Plus it replaced the various task-oriented dice pools like Combat Pool, Hacking Pool, Control Pool, etc. In 5e it became absolutely critical...

Charmed and enamored by Iggwilv who wants the wizard to break/limit the power of some demon lords and increase the power of others. Really wanting to wish those Demon Lords away :) so this is reboot.

  • 05:27 AM - Abstruse quoted Draegn in post Shadowrun Sixth Edition Announced!
I wonder if this core book will stay together rather than falling apart in two days like the last one did? Depends on the printer. It's not a problem limited to CGL as even WotC has had problems with binding over the past few years.

  • 06:39 PM - Lalato quoted Draegn in post Having Fun with an Alternative Character Creation Method
In my game I expanded the backgrounds so that they follow a life path. Choosing various backgrounds creates your character. We end up with four basic classes, Divine, Arcane, Mundane, Nonpareil (combinations of the previous three). This is similar to Talislanta and the alternative life path system in Shadowrun. The traditional class names are now like the 1E level rank titles and are given when completing a given path. Do you have this codified anywhere in a document? If it's in a shareable state, I wouldn't mind taking a gander.

105767 DOWNLOAD 3.4: THE PHYSICAL ADEPT DOWNLOAD 3.3: THE MAGE UPDATE On d20 Modern: First off, when I say something is "one of the worst RPGs I have ever seen" I probably mean to imply the qualifier "amongst reasonably mainstream RPGs with budgets of some kind". I am not comparing anything put out by WotC with, well, FATAL and friends. Secondly, I am actually kind of still in love with the 3E engine, specifically 3.5. Thirdly: I did not like d20 Modern's implied setting. There are so many cool and valid ways to combine modern urban action with magic and monsters to make a cool urban fantasy setting, and d20 Modern goes with none of them. Instead we got dumb crap like idk, rhino men playing hockey? That's the one piece of art I can specifically remember cringing at back in the 00s. The setting-or-lack-thereof implied in the art was just so infuriatingly stupid. The implication seemed to be that everything that could possibly be a thing in D&D into the modern world and then change the imp...

  • 04:15 PM - Ancalagon quoted Draegn in post 2 frost giants or 3 hill giants?
I would have thought hill giants would be sheltering during a snow storm, while frost giants would be out for a stroll. :) That is a good point. Taking a leaf from an Endless Quest book, why not one frost giant and his pet young white dragon? CR 6 & CR 7 and a much more interesting encounter! That would be very cool, but for campaign reasons that wouldn't work. Have an ice troll who is an illusionist, use magic to look like a giant. If the paladin attacks the troll his giant slaying sword is negated. Trolls *are* in the giant class so that wouldn't work. Negating the paladin's sword is not an objective here.

A question for you lovely experts: if a player wielding a vorpal weapon declares he is using subduing damage would that mean the target is still dead with a broken neck instead of decapitation? The damage can be subdual but if a 20 is rolled then the target's head is cut off regardless (and he's very non subdually dead). Edit: beaten to the punch, but yes - quite dead.

A question for you lovely experts: if a player wielding a vorpal weapon declares he is using subduing damage would that mean the target is still dead with a broken neck instead of decapitation? I think if you attempt to do non-lethal damage with a Vorpal sword and you get a natural 20 it simply counts as an "oops" moment. Next time let somebody else take the prisoner for interrogation.

How do your players like moral dilemmas? I love moral dilemmas as a DM. They serve three main purposes, IMHO: 1. Get players to talk/argue in character. 2. Get players to define their characters' wants and opinions more clearly. 3. Give you the DM time to sit back and watch the game unfold.
