Monster/racial classes. Racial paragon classes. Vestige pact magic and martial adepts (Tome Battle: Book of Nine Swords). All "true" dragons (dragons with age categories). Age categories for lord vampires and mummies. Favored soul and psionic ardent to create characters with a hate-love relation with the rest of divine spellcasters. Primal power for druids, rangers, shamans and...

Since the beginning D&D always has had got elements of arcano-tech or magic technology, but now the influence is stronger because we are use to the steampunk genre. A lot of players love monster pets, for background for their characters and storytelling goals more than for munchkin's gameplay. I wonder about the idea of monster companion classes, like a second PC who also earns its own XPs...

Don't forget firearms can be used by enemies, and a goblin with a rifle from the top of a tree is a higher challenge and it XPs reward should be different. When we talk about firearms and d20 I say the "Cobretti effect" because in the movie "Cobra" Brigitte Nielsen's character couldn't face night slasher but only to hide and run away like in a survival horror game, but Sylvester Stallone with...

I have got the OA 3rd Ed (Spanish translation). I like the background of the shen or spirit-folk but their racial traits aren't very useful for me. OA is perfect for wuxia heroes, like in the movie "Tiger and Dragon", and for a remake of the warblade, crusader and swordsage from "Tome of Battle: Book of Nine Swords". Ninja, Samurai and Sohei are too cool to be only subclasses. And if...

I am more a book collector than a player, and I would rather to create my own mash-up worlds. I like some ideas from L5R like samurai clans and humanoid races, but I would rather Oriental Adventures with more classes and races. OA needs "nekojin" ( = catfolk), cool racial traits for the shen, the "oriental elves", and I imagine samurai, ninja and shujenja as martial adept classes, with...

You must remember the custom of the firstborn as heir is in the Christian kingdoms. In the Roman empire hadn't to be always. In the last pages of "the Crusades through Arab Eyes" by Amin Alouf told Muslim polygamy avoided the firstborn was the heir, and after each caliph, sheikh or emir's death, a new civil war for the succession to the throne started. Later I read in internet to avoid this...

Monster PCs are fun like wearing a Halloween costume. Tielfings are perfect to be the "little ugly duckling", and smarter than half-orcs. I would rather aasimars/deva because they are outcasts in its own way, suffering the tall poppies syndrome, the hostility against who stands out above the rest by envious and rivals. I imagine them with a bad reputation of snobs and wolves wearing sheep's...

And we shouldn't forget the business of the videogame and RPG liveplay streaming. I would dare to bet WotC wants the ultimate videogame RPG where a player would be the DM controlling the monsters and nPCs and telling the story, the other players find an optional solution by means of investigation or social skills. Some cartoons and novels would be adaptation of games.

My house rule is influenced by White Wolf's storytelling system and I use hit points and levels of health, like a subzero pool of hitpoints. Usually you never lose health levels but PC has zero hit points, or special attacks like poisons or life-drainer powers by creatures as vampires. The consumption of Con ability score is replaced by a loss of health level, suffering a permanent penalty until...

Mobiles and MP3 changed music industry, and internet and tablets will change RPG industry. Paper will be like collector edition videogames, and most of sold titles will be downloaded PDFs. I guess WotC's plan will be something like the open licence but in version videogame software, when the third party publishers would be like selling videogame mods.

LuisCarlos17f for a modern setting I would go for something like Warspell: the Merged https://www.amazon.co.uk/WarSpell-Merge-Gorg-Huff-ebook/dp/B07L416R4W/ref=sr_1_1?keywords=Warspell&qid=1553620903&s=digital-text&sr=1-1-catcorr Which is D&D with the serial numbers filed off.

LuisCarlos17f That seems reasonable under a nine alignment system. Good, Evil and Nature are the three most important factions in D&D-world, with a possible Cthulhu/Tharizdun/Far Realm as a fourth. Under the three alignment system I'd place Nature as neutral. This is a different approach to Tolkien, where nature is very clearly good and the forces of evil, represented by orcs and Saruman, are strongly anti-nature.

  • 09:46 PM - Azzy quoted LuisCarlos17f in post Full Stats for Infernal War Machine from Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus
The term is, or it should be, "Grimdark". Nah, I mean it's very 40K... Like this looks like it should have the Khorne symbol and some chaos marines with chain swords screaming "Blood for the Blood God!".
  • 08:25 AM - vecna00 quoted LuisCarlos17f in post Full Stats for Infernal War Machine from Baldur's Gate: Descent into Avernus
I guess Hasbro's hand is behind this, and I don't blame it. Arcanopunk or magic technology is possible in D&D but they are too expensive to be used usually in the battlefield. Sometimes I imagine D&D arcane spellcasters creating the equivalent of flywheel energy storage (this is technology from real life, not sci-fi speculation). Theses machines could be the end of the chavalry....if enemy spellcasters don't summon gremlins to sabotage this magic technology. It is curious, because the template for petitioner in 3.0 was broken but I miss it because they could be a good hook of new stories. In the setting the souls can't be used as fuel for infernal machines, but more like "motor". Better to be used as muscle than as food. Other option spent "soul coins" aren't destroyed really but those come spirits come back to their plane. * Let's imagine you are an ordinary soldier in the battlefield from a D&D world. The enemy has created a war machine moved by "soul coins". These are the spiri...

A lot of players love monster pets, for background for their characters and storytelling goals more than for munchkin's gameplay. I wonder about the idea of monster companion classes, like a second PC who also earns its own XPs pool to leveling up. Well that's what the Sidekick UA rules from last December were for, weren't they? I mean, one of the examples given was a mastiff, but you could just as easily apply them to a pseudodragon or kobold or flumph. They're sort of an all purpose advancement system that's not as small as simple HD advancement and not as big as PC class levels.

  • 01:41 AM - Charles Dunwoody quoted LuisCarlos17f in post Try to Survive This!! Vigilante City RPG Superheroics
The d20 in the modern age needs to fix or improve the value of CR or XPs to avoid the "Cobretti effect". In the movie "Cobra" Brigitte Nielsen couldn't face the night slasher only run away like in a survival horror game, but Sylvester Stallone with enough weapons could kill all the cult of the new dawn. I have an interview with Eric that will be posted soon. One of his design goals was to have heroes start out as nearly normal people and grow into being heroes over the levels. Not have too much in the way of power jumps and keep things street level. Having only 10 levels will help iron out some of the huge power differences I expect, but only playing through a whole campaign will determine if that is true or not.

  • 11:10 PM - Ancalagon quoted LuisCarlos17f in post Why are tieflings so popular? How did they manage to outcompete all the other wacky races to win their place in mainstream D&D?

I would rather aasimars/deva because they are outcasts in its own way, suffering the tall poppies syndrome, the hostility against who stands out above the rest by envious and rivals. I imagine them with a bad reputation of snobs and wolves wearing sheep's clothing, when they really want to help the rest of people. I also like gnomes precisely because they are unpopular, but are too specialized in stealth and illusory magic. They need more flexible racial traits, for example these could be replaced by racial feats.Bah, you haven't lived until you have played a gnome ranger as the party tank!

The perfect world of a "Game of Thrones" story may be Aebrynis(Birthright). I'll second that! I'm playing in my friend's Birthright 5e game right now, and every time we play I keep thinking "man, this would play so much better using the ASoIaF rules."
  • 05:39 PM - Mike Myler quoted LuisCarlos17f in post Mythological Figures: Genghis Khan (5E)
My opinion is Genghis Khan is one of the best examples of the warlord, class designed for 5th Ed by Robert Schwalb. That *is* OGL too, and no more or less RAW than the unofficial Mearls warlord archetype used here. In future we might see Schwalb's warlord up here. :D
  • 03:45 PM - Ralif Redhammer quoted LuisCarlos17f in post What DO You Get When You Cross Critical Role With Game Of Thrones?
Totally. I've been mulling doing Birthright for my next campaign. D&D has gotten away from the rulership aspects that used to be baked in, and there's a certain appeal to returning to that. Also, Ramin Djawadi's soundtrack pretty much makes anything ten times more epic. The theme song is an absolute masterpiece. The perfect world of a "Game of Thrones" story may be Aebrynis(Birthright).

I am Spanish, I don't see TV at all and I couldn't watch that Saturday Night Live but I can tell you. Don't trust toxic propaganda showed as acid humor, don't trust toxic people who try to be fun but really wish to humiliate and psychologically mistreat who he doesn't like. They are more dangerous you could guess in the beginning, because they forget the respect of the human dignity, the base of our rights, and later it is easier move from the offenses and taunt to the physical violence. Sometimes the "acid humor" is only vulgarity, mediocrity and the first step to fall in the dark side of the Force. Well said sir.

Are they cannon in D&D? Will we see a cartoon serie in Netflix? Yes. Unlikely.
  • 06:28 PM - VGmaster9 quoted LuisCarlos17f in post Seas of Vodari Kickstarter Interview with Shawn Ellsworth of Tribality
This is fantasy swashbuckling, a subgenre now popular thanks "Pirates of the Caribbean Sea", but also this is a transition between Arthurian Fantasy and Gothic Fantasy, I mean, between middle age and industrial revolution, where some warriors wear armour yet, but firearms are used more times, knights vs armor. A true challenge of balance of power because gunpowder is too cheap for bulletproof magic defenses. I personally think it started with 7th Sea in the TTRPG world. But yeah, more swashbuckling fantasy would be nice, among other different periods besides medieval. However, I think in this time period, bows and arrows stopped being used in the more developed civilizations.

Are they cannon in D&D? Will we see a cartoon serie in Netflix? I would love to see a cartoon series in Netflix, but I wonder if Hasbro would be looking to buy/license Critical Roles IP instead, given the proven fan base and the fact that their will be a first season in production already. Or, they would likely look to a property they already have with a wide fan base. Something like Dragon Lance or the Drizzt storylines.
  • 02:28 PM - Cergorach quoted LuisCarlos17f in post The Fortenite-ification of Everything
Do remember the last years of TSR was in the great kaboom of the videogame industry. Final Fantasy, Stacraft and Diablo II killed AD&D and (almost) Warhammer. BS! In those days GW was growing: http://investingsidekick.com/wp-content/uploads/2014/01/GAW-sales-long.png TSR was also growing, but TSR got killed by horrible management decisions, not computer games. They overextended themselves and then got screwed by a distributor that ordered a lot, destroyed everything to be returned for a refund. That is what killed TSR, nothing else. Your also talking about the days that Magic the Gathering was released and growing, ccgs, what computer games?. TSR was already dead and in WotC hands when StarCraft and Diablo II came out... Hell, when Diablo II came out we were just starting in D&D 3E, at the time the most popular version ever. 2000-2008 is often seen as a D&D golden age... And while WoW is often cited as the reason why D&D 4E failed, they are right, but for a whole different reason then...
