  • 05:03 PM - OB1 mentioned Slit518 in post What are the best feats to pick for my Human Assassin build?
Slit518 Cool concept, clearly you're thinking character first and it shows with a unique and interesting build that will still be plenty effective. To get the most out of your assassinate ability, I'd go Alert at 4th, then work to up your strength with Tavern Brawler (giving you a +1 str as well as a bonus action grapple) at 8th and then +2 Str at 10th. Past that you could pick from Actor, Lucky, Mobile, Medium Armored, Tough, or Keen Mind depending on how your character evolves during play.

...rrows plenty of the Druid's spells, and a powered down version of Wildshape. But I also looked at the Bard spells for the "trickery" side, and stole a few Warlock spells. And finally, I decided I want to see if using the Spell point system in the DMG would work - thus altogether the Witch could have some Druid and some Warlock flavours and yet be its own class. One thing I starting doing is reviewing the mechanical structure of all the other 5E classes, and the SRD helps as it is all crunch. While fluff is needed to help justify a new arcane class, I feel the mechanics have to "fit" the general class structure and be sufficiently distinct too. It's still a work in progress for me. So when it comes to a final draft I plan to first compose the crunch only version (as thought it could be plugged into the SRD) to ensure mechanical soundness, and then I will dress the Witch up with the needed fluff, already prepared, to complete the answer to the first question: What is a Witch? Slit518: I applaud your effort, and encourage you to keeping working on it, as I will endeavour to flesh out mine. :-)

  • 04:14 AM - Hawk Diesel mentioned Slit518 in post New Wizard Archetype: The Splintered Soul
So this was inspired by Slit518's thread about a character that is actually twins. The idea intrigued me and got me thinking of a Wizard Archetype that really focuses on their familiar. It started off as a challenge to make mechanics that work for the concept, but now I am thinking this may actually be a viable concept. But I am concerned about the balance of the archetype compared to other wizard schools. Familiars are already spoken of as problematic due to their ability to grant advantage nearly at will with the Help action in combat, but this is generally balanced by their low HP and the fact that doing this makes the familiar a target. I am also concerned that it is much wordier than typical for 5e content. So with that, the following are my design goals*: 1) Creating an ally that could pass as your twin, at least mechanically. Thematically though, it could be reskinned to appear as any kind of creature with your statistics. 2) Something that conceptually represents an investment of energy that can act in...

  • 06:27 AM - Quickleaf mentioned Slit518 in post Preview of the Witch Class I am working on
Slit518 I appreciate what you're attempting, but it's a bit of a mess. 1) First, there's no clear conceptual underpinning. "Witches are all different..." "Where they get their power is a different story" OK, apart from that second sentence being thoroughly awkward English, I've taken away nothing from these sentences about what a witch actually is. Compare your opening "identity sentence" to that of the PHB Bard: Whether scholar, skald, or scoundrel, a bard weaves magic through words and music to inspire allies, demoralize foes, manipulate minds, create illusions, and even heal wounds. Even the Bard, the most jack-of-all-trades D&D class, has more coherent identity in that sentence than your witch. My #1 recommendation is to go back to your design notes and create a coherent "identity sentence" for your witch class that meaningfully distinguishes it from the other classes in D&D. Why should witch be its own class? I'm not convinced yet. 2) You're walking into some very nebulous t...

Slit518 and Yaztromo, if you all can, I'd like to start your match tomorrow morning (Wednesday) at about 10 AM Eastern (9 AM for you, Yaztromo. Please confirm that this schedule will work for you. I'd still like to get a match started today. Can anyone do it? If so, please post with a range of available start-times. If we could have all Round 1 matches underway by Thursday, that'd be groovy.
  • 05:29 AM - Rune mentioned Slit518 in post Scheduling for the IRON DM 2017 Tournament
Yaztromo, I will be using mention tags in order notify the contestants in a match when I post the ingredients. I believe the default settings for these boards will send you an email with the contents of that post (at least, mine are set up to do so). If this is the case, you should receive an email for this post. If not, let me know. Slit518, if you and Yaztromo are willing, we may be able to get you started as soon as tomorrow. Just give me a rough time of day or night you're able to begin and we'll see if there's overlap. Also, please include the time of your post in that post, so I can adjust for time zone differences by comparing it with the time stamp, which displays in my time zone. (For what it's worth, I'm on Eastern Daylight Saving Time.)

Rereading, it was Gradine who suggested noon, EST. It is possible Deuce was already gone by then and did not know when on Wednesday it would be. I would give him today, at least, to check in some time before rushing to replace him. If he is not online by sometime tomorrow, then we can start talking alternates. But, in the meantime, Slit518, if you want to check in to let us know you are around as an alternate. And failing that, I think I saw Waylander the Slayer lurking somewhere in the vicinity.

  • 02:01 PM - Unwise mentioned Slit518 in post Dwarven Barbarian solo quest?
Slit518 I think that your suggestion about stat upgrades is just punishing the PC for not doing silly stuff largely. As a Barbarian, he cares about Str and Con mostly, so if he does something clever as opposed to just attacking the spider, does it feel right to 'punish' him by giving him +Int instead? I would rethink that a bit mate. If it was a shrine to Gruumsh or something, sure, punish the weaklings that just don't run in and smash stuff, but what is the dwarf god about? Secondly, why would the dwarf god want to kill anybody that touched his stuff? Is he a homicidal? Why constitution? Why not displaying knowledge of his teachings, being of fine moral fiber, solving a riddle, showing skill at crafting? It just seems oddly out of place and a bit arbitrary. As a home brew god I can't know for sure of course.

  • 01:26 AM - Quickleaf mentioned Slit518 in post Dwarven Barbarian solo quest?
Slit518 Any info on Throgren? Didn't see it among the Morndinsamman. It's a homebrew deity right? Mechanically, I'd say you want to shoot for encounters worth roughly 1,100 - 1,700 XP. For example, a CR 4 Ettin is worth 1,100 XP. Barbarian is a good self-reliant class when it comes to physical challenges, so probably a good class for a solo adventure. Because they have #rages/day, I'd suggest tweaking the long rest rules so that the PC doesn't benefit from a long rest until he descends to a lower altitude basecamp or makes it to the dwarven citadel. IOW he gets no long rests between the 5 challenges up the mountain. This requires strategizing when to use rages (and any other daily resources he might have). You might want to consider having some sort of "Climbing Clock" running in the background with checks / player decisions determining how long each encounter or the traveling between encounters takes. This can influence whether the PC has to do a forced march at any point (making C...

This is where I fall flat on my face - Bachelor’s degree required, ideally in a marketing or communications discipline. Unfortunately I don't have that. 3-7 years of experience in games community management (tabletop or video game). I have about 5 years in total. Corporate experience an absolute must I worked for Target, they are a corporation, does that count? Experience in AAA gaming brands recommended. Moderator for Midway, they make Mortal Kombat, that is AAA. Experience in team leadership and high level community strategy. I used to be an Assistant Instructor for a Taekwondo school, as well as a moderator on several forums, we had to work together as a cohesive unit with the same goals in mind. Hands-on experience in community building. See above. In-depth knowledge of all emerging social platforms, including Twitter, Facebook, Reddit, Forums, and Discord. I grew up with the internet, this is a staple for most people 35 and younger. Not having the Bachelor's...

The worst that will happen is I will get hired, and not be able to do the job and be a huge embarrassment to myself. But, I have experience, so what am I worried about if I did get it? The worst that can happen is that WotC is a just a front for a demonic cult, and as the latest hire you get sacrificed to Orcus in a painful ritual that opens a permanent portal between Seattle and the Abyss, dooming the world to an invasion of demons!

If you were able to design your own version of D&D, how would you do it? The simplicity of White Box OD&D married to the elegance of 3e in terms of mechanics (this may mean turning something like m20 into a full-on D&D.) Jettison some of the gunk that's built up, i.e., something much more like 4e's cosmology than the Great Wheel. The tone of the original game, especially with regards to DM rulings as opposed to rules, married to consistent and elegant design, which the older versions never had, to their vast detriment. Then, for subsequent products, focus on adventures, campaigns, and example settings. Each year could have a new setting, a campaign set therein, and any number of adventures, depending on demand. And novels. Whatever happened to the D&D novels, anyway?

If you were able to design your own version of D&D, how would you do it? Pretty much just do what I've been doing for 40 years - making house rule changes for my own games, my most well-developed set being based primarily on 1E. The only difference is that I'd publish them, although knowing that they'd now be for wider public consumption I'd likely revise them again to accommodate a wider range of approaches to the game rather than quite so narrowly concentrate on just my personal preference. If I were to use 3E/3.5 as a base it'd probably just look a lot like E6 (but I'm sure there would still be some significant additional changes). Maybe a set of "expansion" rules to 12th level but a lot of the material for that would then be heavily revised and I'm not sure what it would really look like. I have no familiarity with 4E and I've barely played a minimum of 5E so they'd be of minimal influence.

If you were able to design your own version of D&D, how would you do it? Well, I just started with what I was already playing (4e) and which I saw a lot of useful features and characteristics in. Then I incorporated a bunch of things that improve on and extend what was there already. At the same time I did rewrite a lot of the rules in a somewhat simpler form and with some modest structural changes (which is probably just because I like writing games). In terms of literally "how did I do it?" I just sat down and wrote it! There's no magic to this, you simply write down what the rules of your game are, and maybe something about why or how to use it, assuming you want anyone else to be able to play it too.

If you were able to design your own version of D&D, how would you do it? Designing my own version of D&D would begin with clarifying the Chainmail combat system and carrying it forward along with other material from Chainmail, the LBBs, and the supplements into a redesign of AD&D that emphasizes a game procedure that includes random generation of character, terrain, encounters, and story elements.

If you were able to design your own version of D&D, how would you do it? I'd like to see a rules-light D&D. Hide some of the (remaining) systems, so that the player's handbook leaves players in the dark a bit, thus creating an actual need for a DMG. Add another core book - the Adventurer's Gear Guide - so that the players can drool over that while the DM drools over the Monster Manual. Keep the sacred cows - six attributes, AC, four (only) classes - but streamline characters so that it doesn't take an app to make a character in ten minutes or less. A little refocus would be nice, too: actually balancing the "three pillars." Removing Attacking as a required skill would go a long way toward this end...

If you were able to design your own version of D&D, how would you do it? If you had asked me this question, I would have designed something that looks a lot like 3.5, as it seemed the perfect D&D at the time to me. If you ask me now, I'll probably redesign 5e, with only minor tweaks. They're always giving me what I want before I knew I wanted it, it seems. I even liked D&D4 for a short while before moving to Pathfinder, but always had a soft spot for Basic D&D. Then along comes D&D5 and fills my Basic D&D need. Pretty much, I'm sheeple, where D&D is concerned.

And to answer your question: A "world" map is important. And by world, I mean the scope in which the setting in encompassed. Whether it is a planet, galaxy, continent, country, town, house, large dragon bones, etc. Races in my opinion are pseudo important, only because it will differentiate said setting from other settings by the type of beings that inhabit said setting. Classes equally as important as race choice. Equipment, is important, how else would the players do things without a hammer? A sword? Spell components? Food? Water? Starting Region is important because the journey has to begin somewhere, and this is largely dependent on setting size. Monsters are important, the PCs need something to fight. Even if the monsters are other humans! A Starting Adventure is a good idea, because it gives the players an idea of what the setting is like. I find Variant Rules important, because this also helps establish your setting as its own creation. Obviously, most of the core would ...

How important is the art quality to you? The artwork is incredibly important. Does the art have to be masterpiece quality? Can it be sketches like the 1e D&D books? Any of these are fine. What is important is that the artwork be evocative. Would you prefer no art over bad art? Neither. If that's the choice, you're better delaying publication until you can fix the issue.

Say somebody is creating their own custom setting; module; rule book; whatever 5th edition related. How important is the art quality to you? Does the art have to be masterpiece quality? Can it be sketches like the 1e D&D books? Would you prefer no art over bad art? Or would you prefer art, as long as you can tell what it is you're looking at? How do you personally feel about this subject? Very important. I cannot stand a RPG book with bad art. An awesome monster picture often makes me want to feature the creature in some adventure, so by contrast I suppose that bad pictures have subtly put me off and away from a MM entry all the time. That said, quality does not have much to do with how complex or advanced the drawing technique is. Editing and printing should be of good quality of course, so that smears or other printing mistakes are avoided, otherwise they can spoil eve the best art. But black-and-white, simple pencil drawing, and even stick figures (see OotS!) can be wonder...

  • 07:53 PM - squibbles quoted Slit518 in post Mythological Figures: Conan the Barbarian (5E)
My entirely too long take on Conan as a D&D 5e PC, with far too many quotes: (apologies if I quoted any of you out of context or otherwise fumbled the quoting) There's a tldr at the end. Abilities: All of Conan's ability scores are clearly very high. Conan never encounters a Human stronger than himself. Maybe a few that are as strong, but never outright stronger. So if you have Conan is at 18, than that's pretty much the limit of the setting. Also there's a sweet Athletics contest in Shadows in Zamboula where Baal-Pteor the strangler is trying to strangle Conan (and nearly does so) but Conan snaps Baal-Pteor's neck first. His 'mighty thews' are repeatedly called out by Howard, and any mortal NPC whose strength is compared to his is weaker--with the exception of Baal-Pteor, described as Conan's equal, who unfortunately had dumped Constitution on char creation. Conan's prowess is often compared to a great cat. he's not just "agile as a tiger" he's more agile than basically anybody he...

I once made a Conan character, I didn't give him any classes, I just made him his own unique "creature." I took whatever elements I felt like taking from classes, and giving him whatever stats I felt were appropriate based on his accomplishments and feats. If I recall correctly, none of his stats were 10 or below. I gave him Rage because I've seen him rage in "low-level" adventures, taking blows that would fell a dozen men, while just hacking through a half-dozen guards or so, with ease. I've seen him outsmart many a foe. In fact, Conan uses his smarts quite often, and it is one of his prevailing stats. His Charisma isn't to be underestimated either. He's gotten around "encounters" with Intimidation; Diplomacy; Charm, etc. Conan is most certainly a Mary Sue, I will admit it. Let us not forget Conan becomes king of Aqualonia. His Strength is his greatest stat, probably a 20. His Dexterity is quite high, said to be as agile and fast as jungle cats, probably a 16-18...
