*shrugs* no there is, of course, no right or wrong way to play unless someone at the table is being hurt. Part of it is that they don't worry about rules. Ever see then haggle or debate a rule interpretation? Do they get caught up in the minutia? Nope, they worry about the story and the fun, not little stuff. If you are like me and have played other editions, especially years of 3/3.5 then...

I use FG. Did a pretty in depth set of research and evaluation when I made my decision in May 2015. Still happy with my choice. I use FG in all three situations regularly. As said, in a mixed environment it's nice to have a webcam for video of the people, but not required. Be aware, last time I checked Roll20 still not have all the WotC 5E products available. Emerald Enclave want Evil Jasper to take over the outpost. All factions want Mad Morrus the Merry Monk removed as commander of outpost. Season 8 may see some changes to the magic item purchasing. From Facebook post. You do NOT get a free faction change to existing pcs. So you loste all faction points if you change.

How do you explain in-game the lack of a magic item economy of any kind? I ask as I've yet to hear an explanation that makes logical in-game sense. After the 3rd age, the fourth age fell upon the world. Magic items grew from trees, magic wal-marts grew in small towns and large cities, golf bags of unmeasured sizes were needed to haul magic items to kill certain monsters. Even the small combats...

    1. Giants. You could add their CR Level to the damage. So a hill giant add +5 damage to any hit. Or you just add their strength stat as damage. so +21 to the hit. Note this will be a special add type of damage not available to the pcs. 3. Is just flavor. Your pc wants a sword master make a +1 sword. go collect x,y, and z damage.

LordEntrails I got bored. Man, don't you see, this is exactly the problem. If you have a buddy willing to DM, why not support the poor guy now that he's investing so much time and money, and all you do is show up with your character on a sweat-stained sheet without knowing any of your own spells. That the DM enjoys preparing (which is true) is a weak argument against not helping him out in any way. Players are entitled and lazy.

@LordEntrails I find D&D's regular XP system to be too much accounting. This system is meant to be simpler in that XP points accumulate from categories similar to video game "achievements." I am looking for new XP awards to add to the ones I already have. New "'achievements," as it were. At the beginning of each session the players recount the events of the last session and hand out XP collectively, helping each other remember who did what. The DM listens and has veto power over awards that seem gratuitous. As for how the XP system works, well: To advance to the next level takes (new level squared) in XP (and in my home game a period of downtime is also required). Going from Level 1 to Level 2 takes 4 XP. Going to Level 3 takes another 9 XP. Going to Level 4 takes another 16 XP. And so on. One of the drains on XP is that it can be traded in for Inspiration. This can be done a number of times per session equal to your character's Proficiency Bonus, with 1 XP buying you 1 Inspiration. Rolepla...

This. I know Paizo regularly cultivates new talent via their RPG Superstar series. Was hoping Adept was that but it ends up being people who are already doing well...? I'm with LordEntrails that this would work well as a two step process. The first step is get the program and the icon recognized. Raise awareness. And focusing on people who can spread the world - such as via Organized Play, podcasts, and the Maze Arcana stream(s). Then, for the following Storyline, they can do a greater mix of DMsGuild others and other creatives... As a Cypher creator, I'm more interested to see if other companies will follow this Guild example. Five companies started when DTRPG opened the program up and now it's eight. Vampire is the big one IMHO. A few others have opened their rules (Cortex) but that's little more than an OGL. Cypher picked an odd setting, not going with a central one. 7th Sea seems to be the only one letting their core setting be open. I wouldn't mind more settings and rules being open. I spent much of July designing homebrew for Star Trek Adventures and just giving it away, earning nothing but praise and the thanks of my fellow gamers. Pfft. Like I can spend that o...

What LordEntrails said. If the spell said "affects enemies" I'd let it affect all the drones without having to identify them but this says you must "designate creatures you can see" so I reckon you have to specifically select who gets affected and who doesn't. Having said that, I'd let the cleric make an intelligence check to correctly identify who's who as an action.

LordEntrails Lanefan Sounds like, even though you have varying answers, you're coming at the question from a "verisimilitude" paradigm: What belongs in this dungeon? I'm also curious about the role such rooms have at the table, during actual play. For example, do they just feel like wasted word count, at best offering the PCs a "break" from the other fantastic elements of the dungeon? Or do they have some other purpose in your games that makes such banal spaces desirable for ACTUAL PLAY purposes? Why does it matter to the players? One D&D trope – and this is evident in the adventure I referenced earlier, Blood and Fire by Paul Baichtal in Dungeon #63 – is a secret entry through the cellars/cistern/latrine. So, if using a cellar/cistern/latrine in that way, it has an effect for actual play: giving the players another choice of entry points into the dungeon. http://i.imgur.com/Qny57fo.png One thing I've encountered in my own games is when I start laying on the fantastic elements thick an...

I'll share my thoughts on your adventure LordEntrails and also the one you mentioned ArwensDaughter once I get a chance to read them. On a related note, someone was surprised when I mentioned that DMs Guild now offers print-on-demand. Wanting to gauge the quality and what's possible for their pod service, I just received a print copy of the Elemental Evil Player's Companion. Btw it's not just WOTC products that are pod on DMs Guild, a smattering of smaller publisher/individual offerings too. About 26-28 pages (which makes me guess the usual 8/16/32 page "reams" limitation is not a factor). Sturdy glossy soft cover, nice clear full-cover heavyweight pages with no bleeding. Staple bound, feels sturdy enough, but it's really cheap binding. From this product, doesn't seem like it's possible (given the way DMs Guild is doing this through whoever fulfills their pod orders) to do "pull-out maps" or anything that would detach from the binding easily. I took a few pictures to share... Sturdy for a softcover, good feel http://i.imgur.com/5mmPhm...

...ne – but (I think) it reads more clearly. My immediate response on seeing that is you could save a bunch of page count and get much more info in a single two-page spread by both slashing the font size in the main and boxed text (you're using 11, I'd go 9) and finding a non-serif typeface like what you've used for the monster stat blocks. The headers can be whatever. Another way to save some space is instead of actually putting boxes around the boxed text, just highlight it or italicize it or make it a different colour. Is the adventure in question going to be available purely through PDF format? I would expect that's the case, but I figure it's best to confirm. Going on that assumption, I think you should consider setting aside formats and methods established by print media. So, linking to relevant info throughout the PDF is better than an index. In case it matters, everything I'm saying here is based on print only. If it's not on paper, I don't want it. :) That said, LordEntrails suggested upthread that DMs who run sandbox/open world campaigns aren't the target for most published adventures. I've several bookshelves here that would like to respectfully disagree with that opinion. :) Lan-"the game world is the sandbox; the adventure modules are the toys in it"-efan

LordEntrails As I said, I don't believe that removing a character *automatically* makes a setting poorer, it depends on what that character is to the setting, and what they brings to the table, and how and why the character is removed. When you make a drastic change to a setting, you need to think if it makes the setting richer, and if it adds more than (or at least equal to) what it took away, and if makes the setting lose some iconic feature. Differently from a novel (which GoT mainly is, although it was also used as a game setting) a world setting isn't a story already told, but it's a sandbox where people place their stories. It's good for it to evolve, but not at the price of its defining traits. I wouldn't have been turned away from 4e FR if they just--say--removed Elminster, Drizzt, Halaster and Storm. However they took away characters (like gods, as many of them in the FR are essentially character) and organizations as a whole that define whole pieces of the setting, and for a lot of thos...

LordEntrails Thank you for the answer. The coolest feature of roll20 is the Dynamic Light that you described. Really, I and my players love it. But it is a paid feature. Although roll20 does have the Fog of War feature (free), in which the GM manually reveals the map in parts, just like you described FG does. Roll20 works fine for free, really. Dynamic Light is the main reason you would want to pay the subscription. As all the campaign content is hosted in the cloud, storage is another issue. Your campaign can last for months using a free account, but depending on how much maps, handouts, etc. you upload, you eventually will have to pay a subscription to allow more storage space. About creating maps, roll20 offers map creating tools you can use to build maps. However, the tool ins't much refined and there are very few resources to use. Although it works (I have created a lot of maps using it), you will most likely want to create your maps using a third party app and upload it to roll20 anyw...

  • 11:00 PM - TheCosmicKid quoted LordEntrails in post Braille for various species?
Well, the dwarven thought is pretty much on, but since I always see them carving into stone or etching into metal sheets, the runes might already be able to be read tactiley. No need for a separate alphabet. There were many alternative systems to Braille that worked on the principle of embossing standard Roman letter forms. Boston line lettering was a common one, for example. The dot patterns of Braille are apparently easier to read by touch than the lines and curves of Roman letters, and Braille became the predominant system. But the embossed letters did work. So I could see it going either way: dwarves might use their standard rune forms, or they might invent a touch-specific alphabet.

I too don't see magic as common as you do. It would change a great deal of how I see my fantasy world if 3rd level spells were available to the poor. Clerics tend to help the poor... unless they are a cleric of the evil gods, then they collect the poor for their, um, purposes.

  • 07:48 PM - Satyrn quoted LordEntrails in post Braille for various species?
Their wouldn't be. I don't envision a world where; 1) blind commoners are that common 2) that their is enough social interest in providing a writing system for them 3) those rich enough to care for a blind family member (etc) with enough support to develop a braille system would just use magic to restore their sight. That mirrors what I first thought, but then it popped into my head that dwarves might have developed a tactile writing right from the start since they live underground in poorly lit conditions. So I answered the question as "if a race wanted to read in the dark, how would they manage?" I also thought of elves "reading" while trancing (their eyes shut or unfocused) which led me to the idea of magic reading to them. So, my solutions keep to the likelihood that these societies won't be developing something so structured as language for the blind.

  • 04:37 PM - Sacrosanct quoted LordEntrails in post Average Damage by Level
Is anyone aware of any resources that show average damage output for a character by level? Ideally, typical primary weapon/attack/spells (no magic items) damage by class and level? This isn't really possible, because it changes depending on how many combat rounds are faced per day. If you only have a few combats per day, the casters' damage will be much higher. More combat rounds, and they run out of spells and the damage drops significantly. As I mentioned in the other thread, it seems a factor that most people ignore when doing white room analysis, which is a critical error IMO. Most of those white room analysis is based on a single arena style combat encounter, and of course the game is not played with only one encounter per day.

You won't find the answer you are looking for unless you accept some kind of predefined structed adventuring day. I've looked quite a bit at 2 short rest 6 encounter adventuring days. If you don't take feats etc into account most options balance out pretty well there in damage at least through at least level 5.

I think they are ignoring/ret-conning most of what happened in 4E. After all, Halaster is now alive and Durnan is back to being the original (and apparently immortal) Durnan and not a great/grandson. I wouldn't call that a retcon, because they aren't ignoring the past, they merely adding events that make it more simular to how things used to be.

Then go for it, make every roll opposed and see how long and slow your combats become. Or, remove all opposed rolls and replace with passives. Neither are going to break the mechanics. The way it is now is a compromise.Actually, as stated, i did go for it with all static npc scores for quite some time with good redults and more player focus without a hitch so, thanks i guess for that vote of confidence. :-) At its core, players do in my experience tend to enjoy being the active element in the determination of success fail, more than the passive.

  • 06:44 PM - 5ekyu quoted LordEntrails in post d20 vs 2d20
Its done the way it is for ease of play. As shown, the statistical difference is negligible. Opposed rolls are there because of tradition, and the sense that in those situations both opponents are "active" and when the player is the active defender they are going to want to have a say in what happens. i.e. they want a roll themselves to help defend themselves in an opposed strength check or grapple, etc. Their is no problem other than having two systems of resolution (which are still intuitive) and a perception that things are not the same, when they effectively are."and when the player is the active defender they are going to want to have a say in what happens." So isnt that also just as relevant when he is trying to avoid a sword or a fist as an open hand shove or trip? Having played it in 5e for quite a while with pcs always being the active party (players roll vs static npc values) i have seen no problems and yes... The players live having the active part on them, not the npcs.

It is never is 'serious' at the beginning. Whoah. Have you studied 1930s Germany, at ALL? When the Third Reich came for the communists, there was little to no reasonable doubt that death was on the line. Yes, there was a build-up, in which it was easy for many Germans, such as Niemoller, to look the other way. There was no honest basis for ignorance, though. Some people were clinging to hope, some were in denial, some responded to his writings and his speeches with "well, he didn't really mean THAT". (Contemporary parallels are obvious.) He published Mein Kampf in 1925, and from then on, there was no reasonable doubt that he intended genocide. "Mein Kampf" even specified the method of poison gas for killing Jews by the thousands. On one hand, I would love for anyone who is not yet aware of Niemoller's poem, to consider how closely it applies to their present situation. On another hand, let's scale our arguments to the stakes at hand*. Heather Heyer lived and died by Niemoller's principles. She has my respect as a fallen hero. GenCon is not "Unite the Right". Not yet, anyways. Kobold Boots explicitly said that he saw immediate threat to anyone's life, as grounds for immediate action. All well and good except for one flaw in your reasoning.. 1. Following your ideals instead of considering how they impact others you love, is the epitome of self-interest regardless of what outcome they result in and selfish. 2. If you love someone enough to care for them, provide for them and make it such that they can have a life without their having to work 9-5, they rely on you.
