But color doesn't make a map too busy. Color used correctly makes a map more informative. And easier to copy... again, depending upon your source and your copier, color doesn't impact that either. Now, color copies are more expensive, so I understand that. But they are color! You don't like color! Besides, those are just reprints of poster/battlemaps I already have :) You might even be...

Controlled distribution is not my preferred solution. A moral and ethical society is. But that's not something that can be regulated, it can only be educated. *lol* you're funny. What possible solution is there that provides a superior experience that will not quickly be circumvented? DRM? Yea, that doesn't work, that will soon be broken, just like trying to enforce copyright actions. You...

I appreciate the warning. The ad copy is deceptive. IMO, mainly because the maps in DoMM only detail about 15% of what has previously been detailed for the Undermountain, I don't see how anyone can claim that is the "bulk". I will say I'm not surprised by what you describe. I have mixed feelings about it though because I'm working on releasing my own versions of the maps ;p I've been so...

So, in today's world where just about anyone can convert a printed product to a digital product either for free (using a civic source like a library) or purchasing a multi-function printer for less than $100 how do you 'provide sufficient incentive for creators to create' without controlling distribution of said product and/or their format conversions?

DOH! Yes I did. If the map maker is getting a % cut of each sale, he needs to kiss the marketing person. One, I assumed since it was still August 6, 2018, the pictures were not the final product . Thanks to both of you. The reason I'm wondering is because I'm putting some bookworms into the Ultimate Undermountain. I want to give some reasonable guidance to the DMs on how if the bookworms getting into a spellbook, how quickly they destroy the spells within. Unless someone comes up with something else, I'll go with the 1 page per spell level.

I'm not saying that is a technical violation and therefore also an ethical transgression. I'm saying it's an ethical transgression and a legal transgression. Well said. And I will say the whole, "you can't prove you were harmed or lost sales" so you can't prove it's wrong. So many things wrong with that philosophy to me. But not worth getting into. Yes. Agreed. In previous editions, spells in a spellbook took 1 page for each level of the spell. I can't find anything in 5E that indicates this. I do find that a spellbook contains 100 pages. And the cost to transcribe and copy spells, but not how many pages they take. Anyone know a source/reference? Is is still 1 page per level and cantrips take no pages?

You and Elf keep harping on this. I have repeatedly said that converting something you own the rights for to another format for your own use is not illegal or immoral. What I have always been talking about is the illegal distribution of copyright protection. Continuing down this line is ignoring the issue and throwing FUD into the discussion. One could argue that IF the website it was...

So as long as you don't do the stealing/infringement, you are ok with the use of it? So why don't you (or do you?) download all your RPG content from various websites? They are all available and since you wouldn't be doing anything wrong (only the person hosting the infringing content is) you would be morally justified. It sounds to me though like you do purchase at least some of what you use....

And I'll just ignore the insults, even though I disagree with your premise. I would disagree that only the spell lists benefit significantly from being formatted in a way other than on paper (and I'm sure the users of HeroLabs and PC Gen would agree with me). But I am interested in your argument that justification for theft is dependent upon utility. I mean theft for survival is one thing,...

Yep, time a day. Have a friend who used to live in SoCal and if she wanted to get to the office at 9am, she had to leave by 7:10am. But if she left at 6am she would get there by 6:45 at the latest. I was teaching a class near LAX once. Well, as has already been pointed out by others, the PHB is not needed to play the game, and not only for those that purchase the game, but for those that do not purchase the PHB the grimoire adds utility to the game, and reduces the need (significantly) to purchase the PHB. It's simple, with a site that "just" reorganizes the spells (and includes all the copyrighted text as well) being...

Funny how such a simple word, 'theft' is prone to be considered the language of rabid zealot. Taking a ten cent pack of gum from a convenience store is theft, yet I doubt using the word in such a way would be considered the language of rabid zealot. Interesting how using the word for such a low monetary harm is ok, but using it in a way that might indicate many orders of magnitude more in loss is...

Also note that an active roll result normally has a 'floor' value equal to your passive perception. So, if detecting a seam in the wall (where a secret door is) requires a DC 15 passive Perception, and your player is actively checking and therefore they roll a 2 (+5) for a total of 7, but their passive is 15, then they detect it anyway.

This is only true if DPR is your only/primary concern. If you regularly require skill checks to overcome adversity, then it's easy to setup situations where you might need both Dex and Str, especially if you add complicated terrain to the combats.

If you paid with a credit card (always good advice), all you had to do was contact them and dispute the charge. Since you never received the goods or services you paid for, they would refund your money and take it way from Gary or Kickstarter, whoever the payment actually went to. If it went to KS and they in turn paid Gary, then KS would be theones to have to go after Gary, not you. I've...

Well, as I think others have pointed out, all those things the OP doesn't like really isn't a problem with 5E, but rather either; - an approach the OP prefers that fails to utilize these things well - or a personal preference against the things not liked It's all good, however people want to play.

  • 09:31 PM - Dannyalcatraz mentioned LordEntrails in post Roll20 users; are my impressions right or wrong on this
Been saying for more than a decade that, in the Social Media Age, how a company handles customer complaints and service are more important than ever. And I keep getting proven right. When I started playing D&D, a complaint like that might have been seen by the company and a couple dozen people. Now, as pointed out by LordEntrails, it’s international news. And as Gradine insightfully adds, there’s a bunch going on in the world that- in the past- would have buried this story even if it had gotten mainstream media notice. I’ve seen companies in some of my other hobbies take serious hits to their bottom lines or even go out of business for mishandled complaints that went viral without Newsweek broadcasting it.

Prakriti: That's awesome! Thank you. Maybe what I'll do is make it so that, if the PCs succeed in dealing with the Zhent mercs, then one or more villagers will reveal the location of Mornbryn's tomb, at which point I'll run your suggestion. LordEntrails: Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, it looks like I can't view the maps without a Fantasy Grounds account. :(

  • 07:51 AM - FrogReaver mentioned LordEntrails in post The Monetization of D&D Play
LordEntrails I got bored. Man, don't you see, this is exactly the problem. If you have a buddy willing to DM, why not support the poor guy now that he's investing so much time and money, and all you do is show up with your character on a sweat-stained sheet without knowing any of your own spells. That the DM enjoys preparing (which is true) is a weak argument against not helping him out in any way. Players are entitled and lazy.

@LordEntrails I find D&D's regular XP system to be too much accounting. This system is meant to be simpler in that XP points accumulate from categories similar to video game "achievements." I am looking for new XP awards to add to the ones I already have. New "'achievements," as it were. At the beginning of each session the players recount the events of the last session and hand out XP collectively, helping each other remember who did what. The DM listens and has veto power over awards that seem gratuitous. As for how the XP system works, well: To advance to the next level takes (new level squared) in XP (and in my home game a period of downtime is also required). Going from Level 1 to Level 2 takes 4 XP. Going to Level 3 takes another 9 XP. Going to Level 4 takes another 16 XP. And so on. One of the drains on XP is that it can be traded in for Inspiration. This can be done a number of times per session equal to your character's Proficiency Bonus, with 1 XP buying you 1 Inspiration. Rolepla...

  • 06:31 AM - Jester David mentioned LordEntrails in post WotC Names 10 "Adepts" On Their DMs Guild Store
This. I know Paizo regularly cultivates new talent via their RPG Superstar series. Was hoping Adept was that but it ends up being people who are already doing well...? I'm with LordEntrails that this would work well as a two step process. The first step is get the program and the icon recognized. Raise awareness. And focusing on people who can spread the world - such as via Organized Play, podcasts, and the Maze Arcana stream(s). Then, for the following Storyline, they can do a greater mix of DMsGuild others and other creatives... As a Cypher creator, I'm more interested to see if other companies will follow this Guild example. Five companies started when DTRPG opened the program up and now it's eight. Vampire is the big one IMHO. A few others have opened their rules (Cortex) but that's little more than an OGL. Cypher picked an odd setting, not going with a central one. 7th Sea seems to be the only one letting their core setting be open. I wouldn't mind more settings and rules being open. I spent much of July designing homebrew for Star Trek Adventures and just giving it away, earning nothing but praise and the thanks of my fellow gamers. Pfft. Like I can spend that o...

What LordEntrails said. If the spell said "affects enemies" I'd let it affect all the drones without having to identify them but this says you must "designate creatures you can see" so I reckon you have to specifically select who gets affected and who doesn't. Having said that, I'd let the cleric make an intelligence check to correctly identify who's who as an action.

  • 03:11 AM - Quickleaf mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
LordEntrails Lanefan Sounds like, even though you have varying answers, you're coming at the question from a "verisimilitude" paradigm: What belongs in this dungeon? I'm also curious about the role such rooms have at the table, during actual play. For example, do they just feel like wasted word count, at best offering the PCs a "break" from the other fantastic elements of the dungeon? Or do they have some other purpose in your games that makes such banal spaces desirable for ACTUAL PLAY purposes? Why does it matter to the players? One D&D trope – and this is evident in the adventure I referenced earlier, Blood and Fire by Paul Baichtal in Dungeon #63 – is a secret entry through the cellars/cistern/latrine. So, if using a cellar/cistern/latrine in that way, it has an effect for actual play: giving the players another choice of entry points into the dungeon. http://i.imgur.com/Qny57fo.png One thing I've encountered in my own games is when I start laying on the fantastic elements thick an...

I'll share my thoughts on your adventure LordEntrails and also the one you mentioned ArwensDaughter once I get a chance to read them. On a related note, someone was surprised when I mentioned that DMs Guild now offers print-on-demand. Wanting to gauge the quality and what's possible for their pod service, I just received a print copy of the Elemental Evil Player's Companion. Btw it's not just WOTC products that are pod on DMs Guild, a smattering of smaller publisher/individual offerings too. About 26-28 pages (which makes me guess the usual 8/16/32 page "reams" limitation is not a factor). Sturdy glossy soft cover, nice clear full-cover heavyweight pages with no bleeding. Staple bound, feels sturdy enough, but it's really cheap binding. From this product, doesn't seem like it's possible (given the way DMs Guild is doing this through whoever fulfills their pod orders) to do "pull-out maps" or anything that would detach from the binding easily. I took a few pictures to share... Sturdy for a softcover, good feel http://i.imgur.com/5mmPhm...

  • 11:23 AM - Lanefan mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
...ne – but (I think) it reads more clearly. My immediate response on seeing that is you could save a bunch of page count and get much more info in a single two-page spread by both slashing the font size in the main and boxed text (you're using 11, I'd go 9) and finding a non-serif typeface like what you've used for the monster stat blocks. The headers can be whatever. Another way to save some space is instead of actually putting boxes around the boxed text, just highlight it or italicize it or make it a different colour. Is the adventure in question going to be available purely through PDF format? I would expect that's the case, but I figure it's best to confirm. Going on that assumption, I think you should consider setting aside formats and methods established by print media. So, linking to relevant info throughout the PDF is better than an index. In case it matters, everything I'm saying here is based on print only. If it's not on paper, I don't want it. :) That said, LordEntrails suggested upthread that DMs who run sandbox/open world campaigns aren't the target for most published adventures. I've several bookshelves here that would like to respectfully disagree with that opinion. :) Lan-"the game world is the sandbox; the adventure modules are the toys in it"-efan

LordEntrails I think you're on the right track now. I would cut the Hardened Shell trait entirely because it's superfluous. Just like whatever resistances / condition immunities in the normal place for the monster (like you've done), and then under Abyssal Tentacles note how the tentacles are damaged differently.

  • 03:16 AM - Irennan mentioned LordEntrails in post New D&D product listed on Amazon
LordEntrails As I said, I don't believe that removing a character *automatically* makes a setting poorer, it depends on what that character is to the setting, and what they brings to the table, and how and why the character is removed. When you make a drastic change to a setting, you need to think if it makes the setting richer, and if it adds more than (or at least equal to) what it took away, and if makes the setting lose some iconic feature. Differently from a novel (which GoT mainly is, although it was also used as a game setting) a world setting isn't a story already told, but it's a sandbox where people place their stories. It's good for it to evolve, but not at the price of its defining traits. I wouldn't have been turned away from 4e FR if they just--say--removed Elminster, Drizzt, Halaster and Storm. However they took away characters (like gods, as many of them in the FR are essentially character) and organizations as a whole that define whole pieces of the setting, and for a lot of thos...

  • 07:08 AM - leonardoraele mentioned LordEntrails in post Do you find Fantasy Grounds just too much of an investment?
LordEntrails Thank you for the answer. The coolest feature of roll20 is the Dynamic Light that you described. Really, I and my players love it. But it is a paid feature. Although roll20 does have the Fog of War feature (free), in which the GM manually reveals the map in parts, just like you described FG does. Roll20 works fine for free, really. Dynamic Light is the main reason you would want to pay the subscription. As all the campaign content is hosted in the cloud, storage is another issue. Your campaign can last for months using a free account, but depending on how much maps, handouts, etc. you upload, you eventually will have to pay a subscription to allow more storage space. About creating maps, roll20 offers map creating tools you can use to build maps. However, the tool ins't much refined and there are very few resources to use. Although it works (I have created a lot of maps using it), you will most likely want to create your maps using a third party app and upload it to roll20 anyw...

You think people aren't already illegally distributing DDB content? They are. They are also circumventing the restrictions placed on resources like Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds. LOL, I'm neither angry nor seething. But thanks for worrying about my stress level. Or were you implying I'm rabid like you said earlier in the thread? And therefore trying to imply my views are somehow less valuable than your own? I was picking up an angry, strident tone from your previous posts. Guess I mis-read that. Apologies. This always cracks me up. But color doesn't make a map too busy. Color used correctly makes a map more informative. Note sure it does, as pointed out by another, but it does go to show me that Sage Advice is not infallible and is not RAW, it's just advice. I doubt they go out of their way to inform their partners, they don't with FG. So I'd be surprised if DDB was updated yet. Give them a little time. No, Beyond has the Errata included already.

So, in today's world where just about anyone can convert a printed product to a digital product either for free (using a civic source like a library) or purchasing a multi-function printer for less than $100 how do you 'provide sufficient incentive for creators to create' without controlling distribution of said product and/or their format conversions? I'll ask you a related question: in today's world where you can do all those things, how do you "control distribution" if that's your preferred solution? You can't. You can play whack-a-mole with infringers, but you can't win that game. For a while in the early 2000's the music industry (and the movie industry, who saw the writing on the wall) thought the solution was going to be DRM (digital rights management). They were looking for silver bullet technology that would allow them to exert complete control over their content. That approach had two interrelated problems: 1) The more barriers you put in front of consumers, the more ince...

I appreciate the warning. The ad copy is deceptive. IMO, mainly because the maps in DoMM only detail about 15% of what has previously been detailed for the Undermountain, I don't see how anyone can claim that is the "bulk". I will say I'm not surprised by what you describe. I have mixed feelings about it though because I'm working on releasing my own versions of the maps ;p I've been so disappointed (much for the same reasons as you) with their recent maps that I've started a project to create and sell on the DMsGuild full color maps for Undermountain that also fully map all the levels and not just the portions that the DoMM maps portray. I don't think that black & white or two-color maps are inherently more functional that multi or full-color maps are. It's all about the cartographer and the style they portray. What is it about color maps that you find less functional? Too busy: my preference is for the old blue scale maps, very easy to use and get the lay of the land without anythin...

You and Elf keep harping on this. I have repeatedly said that converting something you own the rights for to another format for your own use is not illegal or immoral. What I have always been talking about is the illegal distribution of copyright protection. Continuing down this line is ignoring the issue and throwing FUD into the discussion. One could argue that IF the website it was intended to be used by those that legally own all of the stolen content. But it makes no such claim. But making those products in whole or part available to those who do not legally own the content is illegal. That is the issue I have been opposed to and which you and Elf continue to defend trying to muddy the discussion by implying that only legal owners of the content are the intended recipients of the content. The only other issue related to this that I find of interest is that posting links to such information on this forum is against the rules, yet the moderators do not enforce that rule even w...
  • 09:58 PM - Azzy quoted LordEntrails in post Spellbooks, Spells, and the Number of Pages
I don't think there are rules for that anymore, so you can use the older method if you wish or just assume that a wizard has enough room in their spellbook to accomodate them.

Because you did not purchase the content. You purchased the content in a specific format. If you wanted that content in a different format then you should have purchased it in a different format. And just because the file type for the format that you want is not available is not, imo, sufficient to justify theft in that specific file type. Ah, but here's the question: when one buys, say, a book is one purchasing the content or the format? Given various rulings over the years allowing personal-use format conversion of content one already owns (starting with making it legal to make a personal-use cassette tape of a legally-owned record album so you could play it in your car, and going on from there), it seems it's in fact the content that one is purchasing. And if that's the case, and one already legally owns the content in one format, how is it 'stealing' to convert it for your own use to another format which may sometimes be more useful? For example, I own just about all the 1e material th...

So as long as you don't do the stealing/infringement, you are ok with the use of it? So why don't you (or do you?) download all your RPG content from various websites? They are all available and since you wouldn't be doing anything wrong (only the person hosting the infringing content is) you would be morally justified. Interesting. You are being a bit sanctimonious about morality/ethics, and yet you seem skeptical that some of us may choose to act ethically even when nobody's watching and there's no impact on anybody's sales. It sounds to me though like you do purchase at least some of what you use. So, why purchase any if you believe you can download PDF copies of it all morally anyway... I actually use lots of those other resources (subclasses, monsters, etc.) AND I purchase the books. I also download PDFs of other games, in order to see what they are like (sort of like flipping through a book in a bookstore.) If I like them (whether or not I will get around to playing them) I buy them. ...

And I'll just ignore the insults, even though I disagree with your premise. Note that I am not insulting you personally; just the nature of one of the arguments you are using. I would disagree that only the spell lists benefit significantly from being formatted in a way other than on paper (and I'm sure the users of HeroLabs and PC Gen would agree with me). That's a fair point: character generators do provide significant utility beyond just easy reference. I also think that character generators cross the line of providing too much of the content: a (complete) character generator does make it less likely that somebody would buy the book. Likewise if WotC published a book of just spells, and nothing but spells, I would begin to have serious reservations about the grimoire. But I am interested in your argument that justification for theft is dependent upon utility. I mean theft for survival is one thing, but for utility? Interesting. Remember that you are the one calling unlicensed viewing o...

It's simple, with a site that "just" reorganizes the spells (and includes all the copyrighted text as well) being acceptable, would not a site that "just" reorganizes all the races fall in the same category? And if that is ok, then why not classes? Now you have all the spells, races and classes from not just the PHB, but from every product produced by WotC in another format for free. Given what WotC already provides for free, i.e. all the rules to play the game, the only thing you are arguing should not be distributed for free is the fluff. Ah, the Parade of Horribles argument. I'm betting that when certain politicians use that rhetorical device you facepalm and wonder how their supporters can fall for that. Question: do you ever drive even slightly over the speed limit, and tell yourself it's ok because it's "just a mile or two". Well, by applying your argument a mile or two might be 3 miles, which might be 4 miles, etc. And because ample research shows that speeding costs lives, aren't you ...

Do you imagine Queen Elizabeth to be 20th level? Do you imagine her to have more hit points and a better attack bonus than the queen's guard at the gate to the palace? But, she probably has a few special traits like 'royal decree' and 'unflappable decorum'. I wonder what Queen Victoria's We are Not Amused ability would look like. Immune to Tasha's Hideous Laughter for one thing.

Side story: I myself have digital product for sale online. They also happen to be available for free and without my permission on various websites. How could I possible ever prove those sites are taking sales away from me? And even if they are not, are you really arguing that they are not doing anything morally wrong? And, is that really the world wish to live in? Yes, the owner of the grimoire is publishing, without permission, a subset of WotC books. Technical violation. No, doing so does not mean that the PHB isn't still needed to play the game. (Feel free to cross out pairs of negatives in that sentence...) If you don't see the difference...morally...between offering a digital product so that people don't have to buy the legal version, and offering a convenient reorganization of a subset of that product, in such a way that it does not eliminate the need for the full product and in fact increases the utility of that product...then I'm not really sure we should bother discussing this.

No, cuz what happens when a new sub-class comes out that has spells? You going to say, sorry, that spell from the PHB doesn't have 'new sub-class' listed so it can't use the spell? Subclasses either cast from a given class' list (e.g. eldritch knight casts from the wizard list), use the list of their parent class (e.g. wizard subclasses) or offer access to a few extra spells that are listed in the subclass itself (e.g. cleric domain spells), so I don't really know what you think is going to happen here. Labeling the classes that, by default, have access to a given spell is a no-brainer to me.

"A little bit" of theft is not ok. And its actually against the posted rules of this website, though one of the longest and most active threads on this forums is all about this type of theft and actually was given XP by the owner of this site, so yea, it doesn't surprise me that this attitude is prevalent here. Funny thing is, this owner is actually an RPG publisher, perhaps he doesn't think piracy hurts his business. As others have mentioned, site like the linked one, along with the free basic rules and SRD actually means that for many players they may not have the need or desire to buy the actual books. But, the bigger point is that by accepting theft and piracy as ok under some conditions, makes it easier for people to justify theft under more conditions (too expensive, not going to pay if I don't know its any good, it doesn't cost them anything since its just a digital ciopy...). It leads to the devaluation of the property and similar works. These views means that the work and effort by the ...

Things like this is what I find really annoying. Theft and piracy pretending to be something other than stealing from others and lowering the value of RPG authors efforts. Wait...what? How does it lower the value? I would argue that the referenced website increases the value of the authors efforts. 1) It makes the game more valuable/playable (at least to me), thus making the rulebooks more desirable. 2) It's useless without the rest of the rules. Are you proposing that there are people out there who don't buy either PHB or XGtE because all they want are the spell descriptions, and websites like that one give those away for free?

I dunno, it’s really pretty useless on its own. No book sales were harmed in its creation IMHO, it’s just making some data more accessible.
