Weekly. I keep a foam "I" to pass to the player. If I give out more than 1 a session the second player just writes I on the playmat.

Yes, according to prior versions their are 2 vertical shafts that enable access to multiple levels; the Shaft and the Pit of Ghanadaur. One of the earlier modules/supplements is about a delve down one of them and details it, but not the levels themselves.

As Gauchi shows below, this is perception, not reality. Just because you think DIS means you will miss, hence you take another action, doesn't actually mean that you actually can't hit once you have DIS. Yes the odds decrease, but its not the end of the world.

Thanks aco175. I can see your point about long range not being much of a UnderDark desire. But surely there are places in the UD where range is certainly a consideration, I'm thinking of all the drow "cities" as the descriptions of those are certainly large enough to be well beyond the range of even siege equipment. But, I'm trying to think of how a bowstring would prevent disadvantage against...

Adv and Dis counteract each other so when Stone Camo applies, he would have a normal stealth check. Now, maybe I would see a DM allowing Adv using stone cunning if the guy was hiding only, and not moving. But if he's moving, then the roll would be offset. At my table.

It should peeve you. So don't do it. Sure, a wandering dragon who fights intelligently is going to suck for the party. But a party that is hunting a dragon better have made appropriate plans for it. A dragon should be a dangerous foe, and an unprepared party is going to have problems. Or they better have problems!

So, say I chose to play a character like Raistlin. A great magic user with absolutely no business being anyway near melee. And now the adventure calls for the PCs to be attacked in their room by ghosts, or rats, or whatever the situation is that forces all the PCs into melee with no room to escape. Now suddenly the adventure sucks because it was designed poorly? Or the game is bad because...

I still don't see a problem. Their are choices, and consequences to those choices. And not every choice has an equal impact on each aspect of the game. Sounds like a good system to me.

So, did anyone ever address the point made a few time by various people earlier in this thread that choices have consequences and that's a good thing? That not every class can or should be competant at every aspect of the game? And in this case; both ranged and melee?

What do you think? 1.Try to make rpg combat simulate movie has been a waste of time since the ink was first drying on the original D&D books. 2.Two different medias which look like they should taste great together, don't. 3.Trying to build a PC base on the cool moves of movie character, has been a headache for GM and players since 1.

From Paul F ...However, if you could bend the wall as I have illustrated, it would be impossible to step out of the wall without stepping back into it and taking an additional 5d8. So damage would be 10d8 (55) minimum, compared to 9d6 (32) for an equal level fireball........

I forget what 1 hour module I was running. Goblins with prisoners with the party being well over powered. Like 4 level. Result. They took little damage, took no Goblins prisoners, and rescued zero prisoners. The Goblins started killing prisoners every round.

I use a similar system with roll over monsters. 6 PC 5th level 1 vs. Orc with Pie. Maybe the orc gets lucky and the rest of the table laughs at Satyrn Sorcerer as he wipes Split Pea Pie off his face. Maybe not.

You are proficient in all weapons. But damage changes with class not weapon. Arcana Casters and monks do a d4 Clerics, Rangers and those other fighter types with spells do a d6 Thieves do a d8 Fighters Barbarian included do a d10 If you mix classes you do the lesser damage. So A Figher 10 wizard 2 will do a d4. Any new or old cool looking weapon does a d2.

That's the intent, but... it's going to be a surprise for the players. So I want to come up with something cool, not game changing (their AC's are already really high for level 5), but memorable. I'm thinking of starting off letting them know something is up by making their armor start to squeak. The two sets of armor will actually be talking to each other, but the party won't know that yet....

IMO if a player tries to squeak some duffus interpretation of the wall being a squiggle and the target can't move out of it or takes damage multiple times in a round, the easiest solution it to just say, "No, doesn't work." and move on. Saying the WoF can only be a perfectly straight line or a perfect circle removes the opportunity for fun too many times. Let them do it, it's pretty simple RAI.

Taking your time to over plan just to save 1 hit point of damage. AKA It does not take 20 minutes to decide go up the center of the wall etc. Beg for a game and be a no show regularly. Dropping in a game without getting permission. Not providing your fair share of snackage.

Well, its from Undermountain so the short answer is Halaster probably did it. Since he's evil, if he made these (seems reasonable) then the act of animating them would probably have been evil. But, since they guard an ancient throne room, it could have been a willing sacrifice from a bunch of royal dwarven guards that pre-date Halaster. Maybe a combination of both? Hmm... Exotic armors for druids are not something I allow my players to buy. They can only be found as treasure or as reward. i.e. I control it so that I can control balance and power. IMO, if exotic armors are available for purchase, then you are simply placing a tax upon druids rather than maintaining an important aspect of the flavor of choosing a druid.

  • 01:21 AM - pukunui mentioned LordEntrails in post What is your way for doing Initiative?
LordEntrails: Using software to automate the process would certainly make alternative initiative methods more appealing. Unfortunately for me, I don't use any software when I run my games, so we'd be stuck with stopping the combat at the end of each round, having everyone reroll, having me shuffle the initiative tents I hang on my DM screen around to reflect the new order, then commencing with the next round of combat.

  • 12:52 PM - dave2008 mentioned LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
One of the players is quite cautious about descending into places that they won't be able to cope with, so wants them to dungeon crawl through everything. This could potentially take another year of play!! I believe that is why LordEntrails suggested the dungeons be clear when the PCs get there. Leave signs they have fled or retreated and that they know the PCs are coming for them. Make it clear the cult is break up based on the success of the PCs. They should make them fell good and move the story along to where the cultist are making the final stand. I think they can cope with the Fane and the Weeping Colossus. It's just the final showdown could be lethal... "Could be lethal" are the most exciting challenges to overcome and the ones the players might talked about for years later.
  • 01:56 AM - dave2008 mentioned LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
There are 5 in the party. Elf Monk, Dwarf fighter, elf/half elf ranger (can't remember!), Gnome rogue/wizard and elf druid/barbarian. The druid/barbarian is looking sub optimal.. The fighter, monk and ranger dish out a ton of damage each round, only one at range though, which wouldn't be good against Imix. Ok, with 5 PCs I think you should probably be just fine against Imix (he is only CR 19) if the group is prepared. Ogremoch might be a bit tougher. However, you know your group the best. I would take @LordEntrails suggestion and then don't change anything with the Princes themselves.

  • 09:02 PM - Satyrn mentioned LordEntrails in post Miles per day on horseback: how many?
A less severe alternative might be that the horse could not be ridden for the rest of this day and the next. Presumably, speed is currently of value to the party, so that would still be a meaningful penalty. That's definitely more reasonable than what I'd do. I just don't like horses. Though that was before reading LordEntrails' post. Now I love horses.

  • 08:26 AM - Enevhar Aldarion mentioned LordEntrails in post Anyone else find this really irritating?
LordEntrails Elfcrusher I sort of lost track in this thread who was arguing which side of this, but basically it is legal for the owner of the product to make a backup or an alternate format of the product. That means you, personally, have to make it for it to be legal. As soon as anyone does this and then shares it with other people, even for free, then copyright laws, etc are being violated. You also need to keep ownership of the original for your copies to stay legal. For example, you can't just buy a DVD or CD or something, make a copy of it, and then sell or give away the original without making your copy illegal to own, in the US at least.

  • 09:31 PM - Dannyalcatraz mentioned LordEntrails in post Roll20 users; are my impressions right or wrong on this
Been saying for more than a decade that, in the Social Media Age, how a company handles customer complaints and service are more important than ever. And I keep getting proven right. When I started playing D&D, a complaint like that might have been seen by the company and a couple dozen people. Now, as pointed out by LordEntrails, it’s international news. And as Gradine insightfully adds, there’s a bunch going on in the world that- in the past- would have buried this story even if it had gotten mainstream media notice. I’ve seen companies in some of my other hobbies take serious hits to their bottom lines or even go out of business for mishandled complaints that went viral without Newsweek broadcasting it.

Prakriti: That's awesome! Thank you. Maybe what I'll do is make it so that, if the PCs succeed in dealing with the Zhent mercs, then one or more villagers will reveal the location of Mornbryn's tomb, at which point I'll run your suggestion. LordEntrails: Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, it looks like I can't view the maps without a Fantasy Grounds account. :(

  • 07:51 AM - FrogReaver mentioned LordEntrails in post The Monetization of D&D Play
LordEntrails I got bored. Man, don't you see, this is exactly the problem. If you have a buddy willing to DM, why not support the poor guy now that he's investing so much time and money, and all you do is show up with your character on a sweat-stained sheet without knowing any of your own spells. That the DM enjoys preparing (which is true) is a weak argument against not helping him out in any way. Players are entitled and lazy.

  • 03:09 PM - canucksaram mentioned LordEntrails in post More details
@LordEntrails I find D&D's regular XP system to be too much accounting. This system is meant to be simpler in that XP points accumulate from categories similar to video game "achievements." I am looking for new XP awards to add to the ones I already have. New "'achievements," as it were. At the beginning of each session the players recount the events of the last session and hand out XP collectively, helping each other remember who did what. The DM listens and has veto power over awards that seem gratuitous. As for how the XP system works, well: To advance to the next level takes (new level squared) in XP (and in my home game a period of downtime is also required). Going from Level 1 to Level 2 takes 4 XP. Going to Level 3 takes another 9 XP. Going to Level 4 takes another 16 XP. And so on. One of the drains on XP is that it can be traded in for Inspiration. This can be done a number of times per session equal to your character's Proficiency Bonus, with 1 XP buying you 1 Inspiration. Rolepla...

  • 06:31 AM - Jester David mentioned LordEntrails in post WotC Names 10 "Adepts" On Their DMs Guild Store
This. I know Paizo regularly cultivates new talent via their RPG Superstar series. Was hoping Adept was that but it ends up being people who are already doing well...? I'm with LordEntrails that this would work well as a two step process. The first step is get the program and the icon recognized. Raise awareness. And focusing on people who can spread the world - such as via Organized Play, podcasts, and the Maze Arcana stream(s). Then, for the following Storyline, they can do a greater mix of DMsGuild others and other creatives... As a Cypher creator, I'm more interested to see if other companies will follow this Guild example. Five companies started when DTRPG opened the program up and now it's eight. Vampire is the big one IMHO. A few others have opened their rules (Cortex) but that's little more than an OGL. Cypher picked an odd setting, not going with a central one. 7th Sea seems to be the only one letting their core setting be open. I wouldn't mind more settings and rules being open. I spent much of July designing homebrew for Star Trek Adventures and just giving it away, earning nothing but praise and the thanks of my fellow gamers. Pfft. Like I can spend that o...

What LordEntrails said. If the spell said "affects enemies" I'd let it affect all the drones without having to identify them but this says you must "designate creatures you can see" so I reckon you have to specifically select who gets affected and who doesn't. Having said that, I'd let the cleric make an intelligence check to correctly identify who's who as an action.

  • 03:11 AM - Quickleaf mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
LordEntrails Lanefan Sounds like, even though you have varying answers, you're coming at the question from a "verisimilitude" paradigm: What belongs in this dungeon? I'm also curious about the role such rooms have at the table, during actual play. For example, do they just feel like wasted word count, at best offering the PCs a "break" from the other fantastic elements of the dungeon? Or do they have some other purpose in your games that makes such banal spaces desirable for ACTUAL PLAY purposes? Why does it matter to the players? One D&D trope – and this is evident in the adventure I referenced earlier, Blood and Fire by Paul Baichtal in Dungeon #63 – is a secret entry through the cellars/cistern/latrine. So, if using a cellar/cistern/latrine in that way, it has an effect for actual play: giving the players another choice of entry points into the dungeon. http://i.imgur.com/Qny57fo.png One thing I've encountered in my own games is when I start laying on the fantastic elements thick an...

I'll share my thoughts on your adventure LordEntrails and also the one you mentioned ArwensDaughter once I get a chance to read them. On a related note, someone was surprised when I mentioned that DMs Guild now offers print-on-demand. Wanting to gauge the quality and what's possible for their pod service, I just received a print copy of the Elemental Evil Player's Companion. Btw it's not just WOTC products that are pod on DMs Guild, a smattering of smaller publisher/individual offerings too. About 26-28 pages (which makes me guess the usual 8/16/32 page "reams" limitation is not a factor). Sturdy glossy soft cover, nice clear full-cover heavyweight pages with no bleeding. Staple bound, feels sturdy enough, but it's really cheap binding. From this product, doesn't seem like it's possible (given the way DMs Guild is doing this through whoever fulfills their pod orders) to do "pull-out maps" or anything that would detach from the binding easily. I took a few pictures to share... Sturdy for a softcover, good feel http://i.imgur.com/5mmPhm...

  • 11:23 AM - Lanefan mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
...ne – but (I think) it reads more clearly. My immediate response on seeing that is you could save a bunch of page count and get much more info in a single two-page spread by both slashing the font size in the main and boxed text (you're using 11, I'd go 9) and finding a non-serif typeface like what you've used for the monster stat blocks. The headers can be whatever. Another way to save some space is instead of actually putting boxes around the boxed text, just highlight it or italicize it or make it a different colour. Is the adventure in question going to be available purely through PDF format? I would expect that's the case, but I figure it's best to confirm. Going on that assumption, I think you should consider setting aside formats and methods established by print media. So, linking to relevant info throughout the PDF is better than an index. In case it matters, everything I'm saying here is based on print only. If it's not on paper, I don't want it. :) That said, LordEntrails suggested upthread that DMs who run sandbox/open world campaigns aren't the target for most published adventures. I've several bookshelves here that would like to respectfully disagree with that opinion. :) Lan-"the game world is the sandbox; the adventure modules are the toys in it"-efan

LordEntrails I think you're on the right track now. I would cut the Hardened Shell trait entirely because it's superfluous. Just like whatever resistances / condition immunities in the normal place for the monster (like you've done), and then under Abyssal Tentacles note how the tentacles are damaged differently.

Uh, people have been making that comment to you for about 10 pages now... Yeah, I'm such a radical. Following the guidelines on how many encounters between long rests, doing adventures that aren't dungeon crawls, occasionally fighting dragons out in the open in terrain of the dragon's choosing not the PCs, throwing the unexpected and unusual at the players, not assuming that they're going to have just the right spell available. Making one simple house rule to make strength based PCs feel worthwhile. Yep, I'm the worst.

  • 08:47 PM - Saelorn quoted LordEntrails in post Ranged Options for All Classes
So, did anyone ever address the point made a few time by various people earlier in this thread that choices have consequences and that's a good thing? That not every class can or should be competant at every aspect of the game? And in this case; both ranged and melee? At least as far as D&D is concerned, combat isn't an optional activity. Everyone needs to participate, or else they might as well leave the table for an hour and go play Mario Kart. If your character build options are to either build for Dexterity, in which case you get to play the game; or build for Strength, in which case you get to sit out for an hour because you can't contribute; then that's a trap option. That choice shouldn't be in the game. That's poor game design.

I still don't see a problem. Their are choices, and consequences to those choices. And not every choice has an equal impact on each aspect of the game. Sounds like a good system to me. When two builds fulfill basically the same combat role but one is close to on-par with the other for melee (with other significant benefits) but is far, far better at ranged I see it as an issue. Add in that many people won't realize it's an issue that cannot be resolved until mid-to-high levels makes it even worse. It's an easy fix so I tweak the rules in a way that brings back some balance and gets a little closer to reality and myth.

So, did anyone ever address the point made a few time by various people earlier in this thread that choices have consequences and that's a good thing? That not every class can or should be competant at every aspect of the game? And in this case; both ranged and melee? The problem is that if your PC is dex based, you can be good at both melee and ranged thanks to rapiers. Care more about damage than defense? Dual wield rapiers and get within a point or two of damage per round of two-handed weapons.

I think 4E had a supplement on the Shadowfell. I can go dig it up if you need the name. Quick google search would suggest that it is The Shadowfell: Gloomwrought and Beyond. Thanks for the heads up. This should prove to be a useful resource as my campaign setting is based on the Dawn War cosmology.

Agreed. IME, most multi-classing is done for power gaming reasons, hence punishing those players by not giving them class based ASI's is a good thing. I couldn't disagree more. Also bums me out when I hear people have such prejudice reactions towards multi-classing. #badwrongfun The 5E system actually empowers the powergamers because you need to find the loopholes to make it worthwhile. Then you end up with wonky combos that have nothing to do with character concept instead of rewarding the player that has a cool concept and uses multi-classing to bring it to life. I also have serious issues with the concept that your class IS your character. If I'm a lawyer, does that mean I can never become a chef?

Neither of you are getting it, which is ok because I didn't really explain it. First, the player likes re-roll initiative. It adds more variables to the combats, which are otherwise fairly boring for him. It's not that he can just predict what the other players will do, but without much effort he knows what is otherwise going to statistically happen. 'The two npcs will die on turn 2, and this PC will need healing on turn 3 and ...' With fixed initiative he knows that he can attack this round and their is only a 7% chance he will be knocked unconscious before the cleric can heal him. Or that if the wizard casts XYZ then that means that the party defeats the bad guy in x rounds. So he metagames because he's got the Monster Manual memorized? Look, I understand that you're happy with rerolling initiative, but the behavior you're describing from your player here requires knowledge of AC and hp to make those sorts of predictions. If he's using that at the table to the extent that you're describ...

When you drive to work in the morning, you make a lot of decisions right? Where to walk, what lane to drive in, where to cross the road, how fast to drive, where to park... right? You are in control of much of it right? But I bet you can predict pretty well exactly what time you will get to work every day. Especially after 30 years of going to work. Even if you change jobs, or get a new car, or a new bus-line or subway opens you still can predict pretty well when you will get to work right? The things you have no control over, an accident or break down or other people have a bigger impact of when you get to work than the decisions you make. It's not because you don't have control. Its not because the choices you make are not meaningful; it is simply because of all the choices you make are optimized to get you to work. Sure, you could make a different choice, and take longer to get to work, but why would you do that? I've been playing D&D and other tactical and strategic games with this player for...

You say you want to control the balance and power of the druid but then say that charging more for the druid is a tax; do you feel the druid is designed to have lower AC than a medium-armor cleric?

"Yeah I can see that if that's how your group works you would not like giving them as many choices. Me, I just go "who's next when the time comes up and play proceeds without any of that crsp you just described. There is not some "argue about it phase" in my system, after all. Yeah, um, I am hardly restricting their choices as you seem to think. They can still perform whatever actions the game allows. I just choose to not be so willy-nilly about it. If your players are so pleasant and wait for each other, "Oh, no, please, you first." "Oh, why thank you, but no, I insist you go first." then kudos. ;) My system is fairly identical to the mechanic of rolling a d20 (never claimed otherwise, in fact it was purposefully designed this way) but with a smaller range of numbers works more efficiently for our group. I told them about it, we tried it a few sessions, and when I asked for feedback, everyone agreed it was quicker and sped the game up. That was my goal and it works for us. Sure, other games...

It takes nothing away from the players ability to effect and enjoy combat. It adds enjoyment for everyone at the table. Even with this, you might not agree or understand. That's ok. Try to think of some general standing on a parapet overlooking ten thousand creatures ...

That's why I said: Of course I meant 'suck' and also Maxperson proved us both wrong with the way his group handles it. It depends on the players. I have one player who is a damn near genius. If we don't shuffle initiative and I don't do anything crazy with the NPCs and he can predict the other players actions then by the end of the first round he can pretty have the entire encounter resolved in his head. So, when I run cons and other players, static initiative is fine. But with my standard group, it pretty much needed. There is no right or wrong answer, just what works or doesn't work for any given group :)"It depends on the players. I have one player who is a damn near genius. If we don't shuffle initiative and I don't do anything crazy with the NPCs and he can predict the other players actions then by the end of the first round he can pretty have the entire encounter resolved in his head. That's... really not that difficult. The uncertainty in combat is not in guessing what the other participants will do, trebly so if you know the player. The uncertainty is in how successful their actions will be. The vast majority of combatants actions in D&D will be unchanged in any given encounter regardless of initiative with the sole exception of the first round (i.e., when spells are likely to be their most potent).

We do Dex check for every PC and NPC and reroll every round. YEa, on paper it would such doing it our way. But, we use FG and so it's simple. It also does a really good job of keeping everyone engaged. because you never know how long until you act again so you almost always have to be ready. Not for us. Again, we let FG handle all the that. Things (effects) just expire on the initiative number of when they were cast or began. Sure, this means that if you cast a spell on a low init number it the next round everyone rolls high it doesn't affect as many creatures, but over time it averages out and it adds more chaos to combat. And since we are using FG, it adds no bookkeeping or difficulty.Yes, you have to fabricate additional house rules and deal with chances dpells and effects might be utterly useless or doubly effective - not something we see as adds. We used floating init for like two sessions before tossing it cuz of so many unreasonable outcomes.

Have you considered going chat based? Not as fast as voice, but much more tolerant of poor internet connections. And those people that play using chat say it's much more immersive than voice. Or what about play by post? I know, too slow, not the same, etc. But if you want to play, you are going to have to make a compromise somewhere. If you can't play FtF because of where you live, you're going to have to compromise. I hate play by post. I've tried. Repeatedly. I just cannot handle the slow, nor the lack of interactivity. Play by text chat is doable, but problematic. I've got trigger finger in all 8 fingers. Not the thumbs...

By seeing consequences and results, they will no longer feel like they are slogging through fight after fight or dungeon after dungeon. Yep, I see what you're saying. However, the campaign fatigue is hitting the DM (me) as well as the players - I wanna get playing, but I don't want to just drop the campaign. Overall we've all enjoyed it - using event based levelling has been great. I've levelled them after each outpost/temple which keeps the new skills coming at a good pace. One of the players is quite cautious about descending into places that they won't be able to cope with, so wants them to dungeon crawl through everything. This could potentially take another year of play!! There's a good level of trust between players and DM - they know that if an NPC encourages them to hurry down to the Fane that I wouldn't do it in an attempt to kill them all. I think they can cope with the Fane and the Weeping Colossus. It's just the final showdown could be lethal...

Thanks for sharing :) And I too like your style. Unique and colorful, a nice change from all the dark and brooding maps :) Myself, and many others I know, prefer maps without grids on them for VTT use (both Roll20 and Fantasy Grounds). And then to help align the program grids to the maps, putting an off-color 5ft square in one of the left corners helps us align them. As a long-time user of VTT as well, I definitely agree here. Maps for VTT benefit from not having the grids on them. Just make the map align to a certain dimension* and then say what it is. The user then sets up the map to that size and then is done. This allows the user to operate without a grid, use a different grid color, or add their own terrain objects without disrupting the grid. *For the dimensions, setting out the dpi and making sure the map dimensions are a multiple of that makes it much easier for a user. A 32x20 map at 100 dpi that is 3200x2000 pixels is super easy to use and handles zooming in fairly well. The user drops...
