There used to be a store near me that all they did was resell stuff on eBay for others. They cataloged it, they took the pictures, they did the research on pricing, they listed it, they sold it, etc. I think they took 20%, but not sure. Not sure there are still places like that. But that would be my first go to. If you want to take the time, selling on eBay is going to get you the best...

Any tactic you allow the NPCs to use you better plan on allowing the PCs to use. And in my experience, tactics such as these are MUCH more powerful in the hands of the PCs then they ever will in in NPCs. So, leaving the ruling in place that you made, if I have learned anything in 40 years of playing, you will regret it. "Playing" around the edges of the rules is dangerous.

In 40 years of running all types of campaigns I've never run into a problem like those. Shasarak's solution has always worked for me and I've never made a big deal about it and I don't remember a single player ever complaining or even asking about it. Again, I don't see why a timeline doesn't work. It has always worked for me. I guess I'm just special.

See to me a timeline is something that shouldn't always "be in the past". Because, who to say when a given campaign is set? A GM should be able to pick any era in a timeline and use that for their campaign. It also means a timeline shouldn't be too detailed. And as you say, once a DM picks a time, nothing "in the future" actually happens the way it's written unless the GM says it does. Well...

Non-Static. Settings should have various eras that a campaign should be set in. Personally making the ruleset edition correspond to the era is... a poor tool used to incorporate novels and increase sales. A campaign should be set in a given era, meta plot advancement during that time should only be due to the campaign, not due to published events. Battletech has done this well. i.e. you...

Yes all adventure league adventures/modules/books are great for homebrew. And as homebrew you can change the various hooks to fit your group. Edit to add. Consider the Season 4 adventures as add on stuff to go along with the book. Or as stand alone for people who did not have the time to run thru the whole book.

Prakriti: That's awesome! Thank you. Maybe what I'll do is make it so that, if the PCs succeed in dealing with the Zhent mercs, then one or more villagers will reveal the location of Mornbryn's tomb, at which point I'll run your suggestion. LordEntrails: Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, it looks like I can't view the maps without a Fantasy Grounds account. :(

LordEntrails I got bored. Man, don't you see, this is exactly the problem. If you have a buddy willing to DM, why not support the poor guy now that he's investing so much time and money, and all you do is show up with your character on a sweat-stained sheet without knowing any of your own spells. That the DM enjoys preparing (which is true) is a weak argument against not helping him out in any way. Players are entitled and lazy.

@LordEntrails I find D&D's regular XP system to be too much accounting. This system is meant to be simpler in that XP points accumulate from categories similar to video game "achievements." I am looking for new XP awards to add to the ones I already have. New "'achievements," as it were. At the beginning of each session the players recount the events of the last session and hand out XP collectively, helping each other remember who did what. The DM listens and has veto power over awards that seem gratuitous. As for how the XP system works, well: To advance to the next level takes (new level squared) in XP (and in my home game a period of downtime is also required). Going from Level 1 to Level 2 takes 4 XP. Going to Level 3 takes another 9 XP. Going to Level 4 takes another 16 XP. And so on. One of the drains on XP is that it can be traded in for Inspiration. This can be done a number of times per session equal to your character's Proficiency Bonus, with 1 XP buying you 1 Inspiration. Rolepla...

This. I know Paizo regularly cultivates new talent via their RPG Superstar series. Was hoping Adept was that but it ends up being people who are already doing well...? I'm with LordEntrails that this would work well as a two step process. The first step is get the program and the icon recognized. Raise awareness. And focusing on people who can spread the world - such as via Organized Play, podcasts, and the Maze Arcana stream(s). Then, for the following Storyline, they can do a greater mix of DMsGuild others and other creatives... As a Cypher creator, I'm more interested to see if other companies will follow this Guild example. Five companies started when DTRPG opened the program up and now it's eight. Vampire is the big one IMHO. A few others have opened their rules (Cortex) but that's little more than an OGL. Cypher picked an odd setting, not going with a central one. 7th Sea seems to be the only one letting their core setting be open. I wouldn't mind more settings and rules being open. I spent much of July designing homebrew for Star Trek Adventures and just giving it away, earning nothing but praise and the thanks of my fellow gamers. Pfft. Like I can spend that o...

What LordEntrails said. If the spell said "affects enemies" I'd let it affect all the drones without having to identify them but this says you must "designate creatures you can see" so I reckon you have to specifically select who gets affected and who doesn't. Having said that, I'd let the cleric make an intelligence check to correctly identify who's who as an action.

LordEntrails Lanefan Sounds like, even though you have varying answers, you're coming at the question from a "verisimilitude" paradigm: What belongs in this dungeon? I'm also curious about the role such rooms have at the table, during actual play. For example, do they just feel like wasted word count, at best offering the PCs a "break" from the other fantastic elements of the dungeon? Or do they have some other purpose in your games that makes such banal spaces desirable for ACTUAL PLAY purposes? Why does it matter to the players? One D&D trope – and this is evident in the adventure I referenced earlier, Blood and Fire by Paul Baichtal in Dungeon #63 – is a secret entry through the cellars/cistern/latrine. So, if using a cellar/cistern/latrine in that way, it has an effect for actual play: giving the players another choice of entry points into the dungeon. http://i.imgur.com/Qny57fo.png One thing I've encountered in my own games is when I start laying on the fantastic elements thick an...

I'll share my thoughts on your adventure LordEntrails and also the one you mentioned ArwensDaughter once I get a chance to read them. On a related note, someone was surprised when I mentioned that DMs Guild now offers print-on-demand. Wanting to gauge the quality and what's possible for their pod service, I just received a print copy of the Elemental Evil Player's Companion. Btw it's not just WOTC products that are pod on DMs Guild, a smattering of smaller publisher/individual offerings too. About 26-28 pages (which makes me guess the usual 8/16/32 page "reams" limitation is not a factor). Sturdy glossy soft cover, nice clear full-cover heavyweight pages with no bleeding. Staple bound, feels sturdy enough, but it's really cheap binding. From this product, doesn't seem like it's possible (given the way DMs Guild is doing this through whoever fulfills their pod orders) to do "pull-out maps" or anything that would detach from the binding easily. I took a few pictures to share... Sturdy for a softcover, good feel http://i.imgur.com/5mmPhm...

...ne – but (I think) it reads more clearly. My immediate response on seeing that is you could save a bunch of page count and get much more info in a single two-page spread by both slashing the font size in the main and boxed text (you're using 11, I'd go 9) and finding a non-serif typeface like what you've used for the monster stat blocks. The headers can be whatever. Another way to save some space is instead of actually putting boxes around the boxed text, just highlight it or italicize it or make it a different colour. Is the adventure in question going to be available purely through PDF format? I would expect that's the case, but I figure it's best to confirm. Going on that assumption, I think you should consider setting aside formats and methods established by print media. So, linking to relevant info throughout the PDF is better than an index. In case it matters, everything I'm saying here is based on print only. If it's not on paper, I don't want it. :) That said, LordEntrails suggested upthread that DMs who run sandbox/open world campaigns aren't the target for most published adventures. I've several bookshelves here that would like to respectfully disagree with that opinion. :) Lan-"the game world is the sandbox; the adventure modules are the toys in it"-efan

LordEntrails As I said, I don't believe that removing a character *automatically* makes a setting poorer, it depends on what that character is to the setting, and what they brings to the table, and how and why the character is removed. When you make a drastic change to a setting, you need to think if it makes the setting richer, and if it adds more than (or at least equal to) what it took away, and if makes the setting lose some iconic feature. Differently from a novel (which GoT mainly is, although it was also used as a game setting) a world setting isn't a story already told, but it's a sandbox where people place their stories. It's good for it to evolve, but not at the price of its defining traits. I wouldn't have been turned away from 4e FR if they just--say--removed Elminster, Drizzt, Halaster and Storm. However they took away characters (like gods, as many of them in the FR are essentially character) and organizations as a whole that define whole pieces of the setting, and for a lot of thos...

LordEntrails Thank you for the answer. The coolest feature of roll20 is the Dynamic Light that you described. Really, I and my players love it. But it is a paid feature. Although roll20 does have the Fog of War feature (free), in which the GM manually reveals the map in parts, just like you described FG does. Roll20 works fine for free, really. Dynamic Light is the main reason you would want to pay the subscription. As all the campaign content is hosted in the cloud, storage is another issue. Your campaign can last for months using a free account, but depending on how much maps, handouts, etc. you upload, you eventually will have to pay a subscription to allow more storage space. About creating maps, roll20 offers map creating tools you can use to build maps. However, the tool ins't much refined and there are very few resources to use. Although it works (I have created a lot of maps using it), you will most likely want to create your maps using a third party app and upload it to roll20 anyw...

I agree with other post, it could have had better details provided on certain portions. It could also have been a tighter / shorter book overall. Chapter 4 is pretty tight, 5-8 not so much. In any case, I've only skimmed the whole thing and I'm curious to read more reactions in the days ahead. ;)

Since the origin may or may not be included (casters choice) the caster can drop thunderwave on themselves without hurting themselves. Well, can you? Because by Bluejay Junior's interpretation, if you opt to to not include the point of origin, you're effectively moving the AoE 5ft away from you and consequently also place your enemies outside of the AoE at the same time (in case of choosing the bottom side of the cube as point of origin). This also seems to be confirmed by Sage Advice.

No, actually -8500 DR was when elves had a city their and had burial tomes (which I would have always though elves used fires or allowed the bodies to rot, but that's what the books say). They left in -1100 DR, but the dwarves had already built the Underhalls of Melairbode by then. -50DR was when a Illuskans settled where Waterdeep now is, started with farms, became a fortress in 882DR and developed into a city in in 952/974DR (depending upon source and definition). The Yawning Portal was founded by Durnan in 1306DR. You can see a good timeline of the Undermountain in this post; https://www.facebook.com/search/str/Ultimate+UnderMountain+timeline/stories-keyword/stories-public And you can find a good history with dates for the City in this; http://www.dmsguild.com/product/248971/Waterdeep-Primer In short, there were thousands and thousands of years of history, conflict and probably exploration of the area, both above and below ground. It might be said that in the lore. But if you actually think about the history and timeline of UM, then it makes no sense. Over a thousand years between Halaster taking over the Undermountain and Durnan arriving, And he and Mirt were the first? Yea, that would be... a poor choice. There was no city there for a good chunk of that time, though, I don't think. Maybe they were just the first to descend into the dungeon and return since Waterdeep was founded.

Maybe if they ever create 'gold', 'silver' or 'copper' versions... I know they are starting, intentionally, at the high end, but I think they are going to sink themselves by their high-end not being high enough, and too expensive for general gamers. The model is clearly stuff like Kingdom Death: Monster, which does fantastic with an IP that's much flimsier (and probably the worst name in all of gaming). As a boardgamer, I've seen the Enormous Box o' Plastic Crap overrun the scene in the past few years. (And "Beadle and Grimm" is a typically annoying "steampunky" name for a company like this. Or some stupid startup that wants to send you hand-curated socks every month.) Since the market whines so incessantly about how little money it has (well, not enough money to buy all the things it wants) it's taken years for the concept of a "high end" to emerge. But like old-school Trekkies, a lot of gamers are loaded: young, single (ahem), in high-paying smartypants jobs. Turns out nobody asked them to buy ...

I've got to agree that CF would have major worldwide social impacts. Impacts that generally would cause a disconnect in how most fantasy worlds are portrayed. Doesn't mean we shouldn't consider such changes in our worlds, just that in general we don't. The other thing, we generally portray our fantasy worlds in a relatively stagnant social and technological aspect. Look at canon for the various worlds, how much "technology" or social progression has actually happened? FR, GH, DL? Nope, Eberron is the only one that has any type of historical technological advancement. Why doesn't the Realms have magical plows equivalent to a real world John Deere? I mean if they farmers have been farming and their has been magic for 10k years, why not? Even if such a thing costs 100,000 GP, you can justify it the same way you can CF. Yes it's possible for people to save 3 or 5 or more years of savings for something like this. Or team up or share or what have you. But I agree with those who say it is rare and unlikely. To take an example from our current world. A Tesla Model S, with local and federal government rebates and incentives and with a guaranteed buy back price after three years costs about $2500-3000/yr to own and operate. Much less than most other gasoline cars, and less than many very inexpensive used cars. Problem is, you have to front $100,000 on day one in order to own and use such a inexpensive to own and operate car. Yet, these Model S's are still a very luxury item. Even though it would make sense for many people to own them and be less expensive than their current vehicle. It's a matter of cash flow. Not may people can skimp for 3-5 years to save up for something that will not only increase their quality of life, but reduce their expenses.
