I agree with lowkey13 about spreading the books. I use a 33 inch 8 pocket luggage to haul my stuff. Another "core" book and I going have just start carry the basics of what I running that night. https://www.amazon.com/gp/product/B01K0863Q6/ref=ppx_yo_dt_b_search_asin_title?ie=UTF8&psc=1

I know it selling, puffing etc. But I always discount the market language. Remember waterdeep heist was suppose to be "Oceans Eleven meets x" And we got to play the part of cops. Not the robbers.

Ok, It sounds like chapter 1 fluff and Saltmarsh city information. Hopefully more info than what Waterdeep Heist gave us. Chapter 2-8 adventures. Appendix A the Ship rules. Appendix b magic items Appendix C. Monsters. Hopefully they take a page from Waterdeep heist "Volo’s Waterdeep Enchiridion ". And just sell the Ship rules on DM's Guild.

The great cartography and political borderlines never bothered me, and still don't, about GH. After all, when you have divination magic and can ride a hypogriff, it's not hard to make perfect maps. Sure, such connotations may not be something we Earthlings developed until far later, but for a fantasy world that has access to magic and aerial surveys, it makes sense that maps would be available...

To me, and I'm no expert at any setting, GH to me is about change. About turmoil and struggles between nations and organizations. Where FR is about the struggles of individual heroes and a constant return to the status quo (i.e. this is the way Ed envisioned it, so any changes always seem to be retconned and his favorite NPCs never really die.)

I agree with climax not being great. If I were to run again, I would have start hunting the players after they explored a room or two. The props did get most everyone into the silliness. I would need a cat plush for a prop if I was going to run it again.

Let them bring whoever they want. The bigger the entourage, the easiest it will be for the drakes to know they are coming and to either flee or lay an ambush. Dragon fear does wonders to an entourage of low level hirelings and beasts of burden. Scatters them to the wind, causes all sorts of chaos, provides plenty of dragon food, and makes the party pay out lots of death benefits.

Not really, to leverage the CT doesn't require the purchased DLC. But it does require you have monster stat blocks. But, for instance you can get all of the ~400 1d6 Adventures "Monster-A-Day" monsters for free in an FG module. https://www.fantasygrounds.com/forums/showthread.php?44066-1d6-Adventurers-Monster-Compendium It also requires the PCs to have populated FG character sheets. IMO the benefit of FG is not the map or the tokens, but rather the Combat Tracker. It's integrated with the map tokens and looks like an initiative tracker, but does much more than just initiative. It tracks hit points, AC, effects (shield, mage armor, ongoing damage, spell concentration, prone, poisoned, cover, etc etc) and allows the DM to run NPC attacks/action and save off of it. Waterdeep Heist is out which is set in Waterdeep. Some of the DDALxx-01 (first release of the season) are great to use. They are generally 5 1 hour games. You will have change the names to Waterdeep locations. I would stick with just the PHB...

Ass 77 mentions, their is a ton more implied by creature size than just the number of spaces they take up. What all benefits and disadvantages are you also considering for size adjustments? Are you looking at some from 3E stuff like to hit and AC modification? Carrying capacity? weapon damage? Personally, I'm very weary of size adjustments, didn't like most of them in other editions, don't...

I like that in 5E a 6th level character can still do/accomplish most of what a 16th level character can and that their is not a wide discrepancy between them. IMO, it's about your expectations. If you are set in playing a 3E mindset, where bonuses of 30 or 40 are possible and that's what you want in your D&D, that's fine, but that's not 5E. Either change your mindset, or make all the changes...

Well, at level 16 I would hope I would have an end game in mind. But, no rush to get there. So 4 levels with at least 3 sessions per level, so it doesn't seem that close to needing to resolve things in a single die roll. But of course, no need to go to level 20 either, totally depends upon how the campaign is going to wrap up. Hopefully some BBEG and re-curring adversary or goal (godhood,...

I didn't have a problem with RAW, or your proposal, and was just about to go to another thread when the thought hit me; why are spell casters penalized more than martials with a readied action? It not like an archer loses his arrow, why should a caster lose their spell energy? Not sure what I think on all this yet, but I'm leaning to houserule no spell slot cost/loss.

Lots of good ideas, but what comes to my mind are these comments; - I think the effects should be a gradual process, requiring more than one roll with escalating consequences - I would think the device would not cause alignment change, but the consequences of use cause evil acts, which then results in your alignment changing because you are doing evil things - I tend to like the idea of blood...

  • 01:21 AM - pukunui mentioned LordEntrails in post What is your way for doing Initiative?
LordEntrails: Using software to automate the process would certainly make alternative initiative methods more appealing. Unfortunately for me, I don't use any software when I run my games, so we'd be stuck with stopping the combat at the end of each round, having everyone reroll, having me shuffle the initiative tents I hang on my DM screen around to reflect the new order, then commencing with the next round of combat.

  • 12:52 PM - dave2008 mentioned LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
One of the players is quite cautious about descending into places that they won't be able to cope with, so wants them to dungeon crawl through everything. This could potentially take another year of play!! I believe that is why LordEntrails suggested the dungeons be clear when the PCs get there. Leave signs they have fled or retreated and that they know the PCs are coming for them. Make it clear the cult is break up based on the success of the PCs. They should make them fell good and move the story along to where the cultist are making the final stand. I think they can cope with the Fane and the Weeping Colossus. It's just the final showdown could be lethal... "Could be lethal" are the most exciting challenges to overcome and the ones the players might talked about for years later.
  • 01:56 AM - dave2008 mentioned LordEntrails in post PotA - speed up needed
There are 5 in the party. Elf Monk, Dwarf fighter, elf/half elf ranger (can't remember!), Gnome rogue/wizard and elf druid/barbarian. The druid/barbarian is looking sub optimal.. The fighter, monk and ranger dish out a ton of damage each round, only one at range though, which wouldn't be good against Imix. Ok, with 5 PCs I think you should probably be just fine against Imix (he is only CR 19) if the group is prepared. Ogremoch might be a bit tougher. However, you know your group the best. I would take @LordEntrails suggestion and then don't change anything with the Princes themselves.

  • 09:02 PM - Satyrn mentioned LordEntrails in post Miles per day on horseback: how many?
A less severe alternative might be that the horse could not be ridden for the rest of this day and the next. Presumably, speed is currently of value to the party, so that would still be a meaningful penalty. That's definitely more reasonable than what I'd do. I just don't like horses. Though that was before reading LordEntrails' post. Now I love horses.

  • 08:26 AM - Enevhar Aldarion mentioned LordEntrails in post Anyone else find this really irritating?
LordEntrails Elfcrusher I sort of lost track in this thread who was arguing which side of this, but basically it is legal for the owner of the product to make a backup or an alternate format of the product. That means you, personally, have to make it for it to be legal. As soon as anyone does this and then shares it with other people, even for free, then copyright laws, etc are being violated. You also need to keep ownership of the original for your copies to stay legal. For example, you can't just buy a DVD or CD or something, make a copy of it, and then sell or give away the original without making your copy illegal to own, in the US at least.

  • 09:31 PM - Dannyalcatraz mentioned LordEntrails in post Roll20 users; are my impressions right or wrong on this
Been saying for more than a decade that, in the Social Media Age, how a company handles customer complaints and service are more important than ever. And I keep getting proven right. When I started playing D&D, a complaint like that might have been seen by the company and a couple dozen people. Now, as pointed out by LordEntrails, it’s international news. And as Gradine insightfully adds, there’s a bunch going on in the world that- in the past- would have buried this story even if it had gotten mainstream media notice. I’ve seen companies in some of my other hobbies take serious hits to their bottom lines or even go out of business for mishandled complaints that went viral without Newsweek broadcasting it.

Prakriti: That's awesome! Thank you. Maybe what I'll do is make it so that, if the PCs succeed in dealing with the Zhent mercs, then one or more villagers will reveal the location of Mornbryn's tomb, at which point I'll run your suggestion. LordEntrails: Thanks for the links. Unfortunately, it looks like I can't view the maps without a Fantasy Grounds account. :(

  • 07:51 AM - FrogReaver mentioned LordEntrails in post The Monetization of D&D Play
LordEntrails I got bored. Man, don't you see, this is exactly the problem. If you have a buddy willing to DM, why not support the poor guy now that he's investing so much time and money, and all you do is show up with your character on a sweat-stained sheet without knowing any of your own spells. That the DM enjoys preparing (which is true) is a weak argument against not helping him out in any way. Players are entitled and lazy.

  • 03:09 PM - canucksaram mentioned LordEntrails in post More details
@LordEntrails I find D&D's regular XP system to be too much accounting. This system is meant to be simpler in that XP points accumulate from categories similar to video game "achievements." I am looking for new XP awards to add to the ones I already have. New "'achievements," as it were. At the beginning of each session the players recount the events of the last session and hand out XP collectively, helping each other remember who did what. The DM listens and has veto power over awards that seem gratuitous. As for how the XP system works, well: To advance to the next level takes (new level squared) in XP (and in my home game a period of downtime is also required). Going from Level 1 to Level 2 takes 4 XP. Going to Level 3 takes another 9 XP. Going to Level 4 takes another 16 XP. And so on. One of the drains on XP is that it can be traded in for Inspiration. This can be done a number of times per session equal to your character's Proficiency Bonus, with 1 XP buying you 1 Inspiration. Rolepla...

  • 06:31 AM - Jester David mentioned LordEntrails in post WotC Names 10 "Adepts" On Their DMs Guild Store
This. I know Paizo regularly cultivates new talent via their RPG Superstar series. Was hoping Adept was that but it ends up being people who are already doing well...? I'm with LordEntrails that this would work well as a two step process. The first step is get the program and the icon recognized. Raise awareness. And focusing on people who can spread the world - such as via Organized Play, podcasts, and the Maze Arcana stream(s). Then, for the following Storyline, they can do a greater mix of DMsGuild others and other creatives... As a Cypher creator, I'm more interested to see if other companies will follow this Guild example. Five companies started when DTRPG opened the program up and now it's eight. Vampire is the big one IMHO. A few others have opened their rules (Cortex) but that's little more than an OGL. Cypher picked an odd setting, not going with a central one. 7th Sea seems to be the only one letting their core setting be open. I wouldn't mind more settings and rules being open. I spent much of July designing homebrew for Star Trek Adventures and just giving it away, earning nothing but praise and the thanks of my fellow gamers. Pfft. Like I can spend that o...

What LordEntrails said. If the spell said "affects enemies" I'd let it affect all the drones without having to identify them but this says you must "designate creatures you can see" so I reckon you have to specifically select who gets affected and who doesn't. Having said that, I'd let the cleric make an intelligence check to correctly identify who's who as an action.

  • 03:11 AM - Quickleaf mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
LordEntrails Lanefan Sounds like, even though you have varying answers, you're coming at the question from a "verisimilitude" paradigm: What belongs in this dungeon? I'm also curious about the role such rooms have at the table, during actual play. For example, do they just feel like wasted word count, at best offering the PCs a "break" from the other fantastic elements of the dungeon? Or do they have some other purpose in your games that makes such banal spaces desirable for ACTUAL PLAY purposes? Why does it matter to the players? One D&D trope – and this is evident in the adventure I referenced earlier, Blood and Fire by Paul Baichtal in Dungeon #63 – is a secret entry through the cellars/cistern/latrine. So, if using a cellar/cistern/latrine in that way, it has an effect for actual play: giving the players another choice of entry points into the dungeon. http://i.imgur.com/Qny57fo.png One thing I've encountered in my own games is when I start laying on the fantastic elements thick an...

I'll share my thoughts on your adventure LordEntrails and also the one you mentioned ArwensDaughter once I get a chance to read them. On a related note, someone was surprised when I mentioned that DMs Guild now offers print-on-demand. Wanting to gauge the quality and what's possible for their pod service, I just received a print copy of the Elemental Evil Player's Companion. Btw it's not just WOTC products that are pod on DMs Guild, a smattering of smaller publisher/individual offerings too. About 26-28 pages (which makes me guess the usual 8/16/32 page "reams" limitation is not a factor). Sturdy glossy soft cover, nice clear full-cover heavyweight pages with no bleeding. Staple bound, feels sturdy enough, but it's really cheap binding. From this product, doesn't seem like it's possible (given the way DMs Guild is doing this through whoever fulfills their pod orders) to do "pull-out maps" or anything that would detach from the binding easily. I took a few pictures to share... Sturdy for a softcover, good feel http://i.imgur.com/5mmPhm...

  • 11:23 AM - Lanefan mentioned LordEntrails in post What do you want in a published adventure? / Adventure design best practices?
...ne – but (I think) it reads more clearly. My immediate response on seeing that is you could save a bunch of page count and get much more info in a single two-page spread by both slashing the font size in the main and boxed text (you're using 11, I'd go 9) and finding a non-serif typeface like what you've used for the monster stat blocks. The headers can be whatever. Another way to save some space is instead of actually putting boxes around the boxed text, just highlight it or italicize it or make it a different colour. Is the adventure in question going to be available purely through PDF format? I would expect that's the case, but I figure it's best to confirm. Going on that assumption, I think you should consider setting aside formats and methods established by print media. So, linking to relevant info throughout the PDF is better than an index. In case it matters, everything I'm saying here is based on print only. If it's not on paper, I don't want it. :) That said, LordEntrails suggested upthread that DMs who run sandbox/open world campaigns aren't the target for most published adventures. I've several bookshelves here that would like to respectfully disagree with that opinion. :) Lan-"the game world is the sandbox; the adventure modules are the toys in it"-efan

LordEntrails I think you're on the right track now. I would cut the Hardened Shell trait entirely because it's superfluous. Just like whatever resistances / condition immunities in the normal place for the monster (like you've done), and then under Abyssal Tentacles note how the tentacles are damaged differently.

Uh really? I mean that would indicate that their are only something like 12,810 characters built on DDB. Is that in agreement with data on things like feats etc? 12k seems exceptionally low given all the talk of how big/used/important DDB is. Yeah, I don't think this list is all-inclusive: most likely, most PCs have relatively unique names.

I hear you regarding the Combat Tracker. I can see using this for adventures that I can buy through Fantasy Grounds. The learning curve and prep time is what holds me back. I've already invested a lot of time into RealmWorks, using Hero Lab for combat tracking. I also have all the source books (but not adventures) in D&D Beyond. My understanding is that to take advantage of the features you are talking about, I would have to re-purchase all of the D&D Books. In other words, say the new Saltmarsh book becomes available on FG. I would consider buying FG and buying the Saltmarsh adventure on FG, but if I also have to buy the PH, DMG, and MM, that's just too expensive for me right now. I think it is far more likely for me to buy FG for NON-5e games that I'm just running adventures for, not whole campaigns. On the other hand, if there were some integration with RealmWorks, that could change everything. But it seems more likely that FG will instead prefer to continue to develop its own campaig...

Also tracks things like if a reaction is used, number of rounds, etc. Combat in FG takes my group about 1/3 of time it takes us with just minis and paper on the table. The more NPC's, the better the ratio. I ran the party of 5 against a tribe of 45 orcs with no problems, and tracked actual hit points, effects and all that, and the player never had long periods where I had to take NPC actions etc. I suggest you give it a try, but when you do, don't do it in a vaccumn. I suggest you give it a try, but when you do, don't do it in a vaccumn. Thanks, LoreEntrails! I'm very conversant/proficient with FG for playing online (started using it Dec 2004! Gah! I'm old!!) and I've found your suggestions for offline/face-to-face very helpful. I've decided to give it a go in the not so far future keeping everyone's tips close to mind. Thanks everyone! Hope this thread was helpful for others as well.

If I can be a bit... humorous.... all we have to do is find out what console system Doug and/or John have I suspect as soon as they have some free time (not until after FGU launches!) they might just put something together for their own use, then share it with the rest of us! Just think Doug & John, you can sit back on your couch with your console on your big screen eating pizza in one hand and your controller in the other while you burn out troll cave, chase off space aliens, or get savage in the weird west! Are you suggesting we club together to buy them a games console? That might get us the order pizza button too!

I think RAW says that ammo that hits is destroyed, and ammo that misses their is a chance to collect undamaged. I'll keep looking. Maybe sage advice has something... And just to clear up this last question: In the PH equipment section, when it defines ammunition it says that the character can recover half his used ammo (hit or missed) after a fight by spending one minute gathering it up. How you integrate that with the DMG's description of +x ammunition becoming non-magical on a hit is another question.

(My search fu both in the books and online is very weak today) RAW: Ranged magic weapons, do they add their magic bonus to both the attack and damage roles? Magic ammunition, do they? Do they stack with magic weapons? The stacking rules are in the DMG errata. Basically, unless they have the exact same name they stack. So +2 arrows and a +1 bow will give you +3 to attack and damage.
  • 08:10 PM - Yaarel quoted LordEntrails in post Large size characters
Ass 77 mentions, their is a ton more implied by creature size than just the number of spaces they take up. What all benefits and disadvantages are you also considering for size adjustments? Are you looking at some from 3E stuff like to hit and AC modification? Carrying capacity? weapon damage? Personally, I'm very weary of size adjustments, didn't like most of them in other editions, don't like the idea of them in 5E. I know Large size characters are a taboo in D&D. But now in 5e, I just dont see any problem. Moreover, Large characters are important in fantasy, playing the Big Guy (one-man army) archetype. This needs to be possible. (I find the excessive abundance of Small player characters at the opposite side of the bell curve, to be somewhat annoying.) Linking size to Constitution hopefully creates an elegant universal mechanic to explain and build a Large size character. In the Monster Manual creature size strongly correlates to the Constitution, and the few exceptions are close enough I don...

(My search fu both in the books and online is very weak today) RAW: Ranged magic weapons, do they add their magic bonus to both the attack and damage roles? Magic ammunition, do they? Do they stack with magic weapons? FYI, and in addition to the other answers- "Bonuses stack, unless a feature or item tells you otherwise. And remember that magic ammunition loses its magic when it hits." JC tweeted that, so ... (Which is why you shouldn't give out both IMO).

I like that in 5E a 6th level character can still do/accomplish most of what a 16th level character can and that their is not a wide discrepancy between them. I would be okay if the rest of system supports this, but I find that it doesn't. In terms of skills, a 6th level and 20th level character are close. Yet the 20th level character is tremendously more durable. Further, the abilities of 20th level characters are very powerful. But nothing more so than with magic....as you get to the point where reality alteration becomes a norm. So you have a disconnect where in some ways 20th level characters are leagues above a 6th....but in skills they are not.

I didn't have a problem with RAW, or your proposal, and was just about to go to another thread when the thought hit me; why are spell casters penalized more than martials with a readied action? It not like an archer loses his arrow, why should a caster lose their spell energy? They do lose their attack, though, and merely readying in the first place loses you any extra attacks. Using a readied action also precludes using an opportunity attack. So there's definitely an opportunity cost there.

Lots of good ideas, but what comes to my mind are these comments; - I think the effects should be a gradual process, requiring more than one roll with escalating consequences I would agree with this in the general case, but in this specific case (the characters are already level 16, and probably only have a handful of sessions left before the game ends), I think an all-or-nothing approach might be better.

Eh, I don't know about immune to forced movement. To me, that's a ruling because it depends up on the source of the movement. Shove? Nope, won't work. Thunderwave? Yes, that moves a swarm. That rule does account for source. In 4e, the forced movement from melee and ranged attacks are weapon attacks. Thunderwave is an area effect.

I got that, but why? The max damage is the same, you've just increased the odds of at least one hit, but you have doubles the number of attack rolls. Is that increased average DPR worth the effort? Well it's not much of an effort, more to get a more dramatic effect from encountering a swarm.
  • 07:11 PM - robus quoted LordEntrails in post I have an issue with swarms
The damage output of a swarm already varies based on if they half more or less than half HP. So adding multiattack just exaggerates this. All you have done is half the damage but double the number of attacks, which is most cases comes out the same. Is that worth it? I just changed the logic a little is all. I used the lower damage output from the original but gave it two chances to hit.

Absolutely willing to houserule :) But what would that device look like? Say it could fit 2 characters and both of those would operate the controls. Would the they only be able to attack once per round? Could if both players chose to control it to move would that be a double move? If both wanted to make it turn, would it make a double turn? I would keep it simple if you expected it to be used regularly. If you specifically want it to be two person have one control movement (pilot) and the other weapons (gunner) (and lights etc). Don't specify "levers", players won't want to use it if it's too fiddly. Don't restrict it's ability to turn, the person on movement can, as an action, move the exoskeleton up to it's maximum speed and turn. If they have an extra action they can move twice. The person on weapons can activate the primary weapon as an action and the secondary weapon as a bonus action. If any skill checks are needed (e.g. traversing a narrow ledge) use Vehicle (Land/Water as most applicabl...
