For nolstalgia, 1e. But I wouldn't want to play it now. If I had to play a D&D edition other than 5e, I suppose it would be Basic D&D (Moldvay / Metzner (but not Expert/Companion rules), which for some reason you are categorizing as OD&D. But more likely, if I couldn't play 5e, I wouldn't play D&D, I'd play Dungeon Crawl Classics.

Taking 5E out of the equation, what’s your favourite D&D edition — and why? I spent the longest time with 2E, but the launch which excited me most was 3E. I think I’d vote 2E, but it’s close. For poll purposes, OD&D includes everything and overlapping before 1E, including BECMI, etc. Even Chainmail, if that’s anybody’s vote.

Most campaigns never get anywhere near 20. If you are not expecting to play to high levels, you are not likely to shoot yourself in the foot. Multiclass as much as it takes to build the character concept that you are going for, whether that is for story, for power gaming, or both. One thing I am thinking about is doing one shots or mini campaigns at Tier 2 or Tier 3 levels. I would tell...

Quickstarters are a big thing these days, and typically it doesn’t greatly affect the funding total. The sense of urgency adds incentive. In fact, the opposite is often true — long Kickstarters can do worse; 40 day Kickstarters do worse than 30 day ones, for example.

But yes, it's better for starting characters than for experienced ones (like some of the exploits which give you free starting kit, etc.) The main benefit is that nobody can take it off you. It's basically free starting equipment (like the OLD Grand Elf's free musket, for example), which can't be removed from the Android.

"The writer Dio Chrysostom, who lived about 1,900 years ago, compared druids to the Magi and the Brahmans of India. The 'Celts appointed those whom they call druids, these also being devoted to the prophetic art...

Eberron is the only published setting that handles this in a consistent, logical, easy to run way. In my home campaign, all magic, other than clerical magic from followers of approved gods, is illegal. This is enforced by a powerful and zealous organization of inquisitors, local law enforcement, and pious/superstitious mobs. The gods and their followers are have religious reasons for not...

Blackmoor has the better claim of being the "original" DnD setting (http://www.secretsofblackmoor.com/blog). Kinda. I would say it is more, "there is a place for a little bit of everything." The original Grey Hawk setting was more of an outline that the DM was expected to fill in. It did the work that many people find the most challenging, giving you a professional and evocative map and...

If you do D&D Beyond, you can buy specific monsters, etc. without buying the entire book. That said, I really enjoy the Ravnica book. Lots of ideas to mine from it.

I have an index like this someone posted for free on Reddit. It doesn't get used anymore since I use D&D Beyond. Easier to search or use D&D Beyonds categories to navigate.

I'm not familiar with the WotBS or what Seela are. But if you are looking for paper minis, check out Printable Heroes: https://printableheroes.com/minis One Monk Miniatures is another, you can find OMM on DriveThruRPG. Both Printable Heroes and OMM provide cut files, so you can use a paper-cutting machine like a Silhouette or Cricket to cut them out for you. When I can't find minis, I...

Maybe not, but he was definitely trying to make this episode a comedy episode. Which is fine. I don't have an issue with slapstick D&D. It is that lack of any engagement with the mechanics. It wasn't D&D, it was just improv comedy with a generic fantasy theme.

Westeros is not even vaguely like medieval England. If also has a very rough 1000-year band tech level which ranges from pre-Roman Britons to the Renaissance, as do it’s many varied social/political themes. So I’m not really on board with an argument which requires me to pick one specific aspect of “medieval England” and claim that Westeros not adopting that is a failure of the show. I’d...

I'm a fan of comedian Chris Gethard's podcast, Beautiful Anonymous. The format is that he takes a random anonymous caller and talks to them for an hour. There is some pre-screening and he selects which to air and when to air them, except at his live shows, but these are not scripted and the guests are not celebrities. His most recently released episode was released as an "extra" because when...

It’s Westeros. It’s not medieval England. She would pride herself on whatever the writers say she prides herself on in that fictional culture.

Petals and Thorns II: Heroes of Ramshorn by Chamomile Has A Project END DATE: Fri, May 10 2019 6:00 PM EDT. SYSTEM(S): Dungeons & Dragons 5e PROJECT TYPE: Adventure module MOST POPULAR PLEDGE: $15 for the PDF of Petals and Thorns II: Heroes of Ramshorn My group is running the first part of the Petals & Thorns campaign now, and it is easily the best executed "sandbox" style adventure I have played. Good adventures give PCs choices, but this one goes the extra step in making sure that those choices actually have consequences that impact the game world. Add to that morality in shades of grey rather than thetraditional D&D alignment system, and it has made for an awesomegame. Both parts of thecampaign are available through the Kickstarter for $25. I am reallyhoping this one funds, so please take a look.

TheRpgAcademy1, Thanks for pulling back the curtain a bit on that. It's interesting to read about. :-) Since we're on the subject, right now there are 3 active gaming conventions I'm tracking (there are more cons for other genres on Kickstarter). CharCon 2019 - THE West Virginia Gaming Convention - Charleston WV - July 12-14, 2019. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/933806098/charcon-2019-the-west-virginia-gaming-convention AcadeCon 2019: Ours goes to Seven! - Dayton, OH - November 8-10, 2019. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/therpgacademy/acadecon-2019-ours-goes-to-seven Harbor Dice Con 2019 - "Central Washington Coast" - December 7-8, 2019. https://www.kickstarter.com/projects/harbordicecon/harbor-dice-con-2019 Happy to talk about it more if you have any questions. I've had the opportunity to be a guest on a couple different podcasts to discuss this AcadeCon and some of the others and enjoyed talking the ups and downs of running a small gaming convention.

Nicholas, Excellent review! This line is the clincher for me: "roleplaying romance can be a very difficult thing. Emotional vulnerability requires a great deal of finesse and care from all those involved". I need to read this for perspective on my own romance project, Love's Labour's Liberated - A 5e RPG Zine. Thank you for sharing this, it's on my list to grab! :-) Thank you, Egg Embry On Kickstarter: Love's Labour's Liberated - A 5e RPG Zine Oh hey, I saw a post on Reddit about that! Super cool to hear that I was able to help, even if just a bit. I hope you like what you see when you grab it!

dave2008, This isn't quite what you're asking, but, of the 35 Zine Quests I'm watching right now, here are some goal numbers: Goal of less than $500 - 10 Kickstarters (all currently over their goal) Goal of $500 - 7 Kickstarters (4 currently over their goal) Goal of $501 to $999 - 3 Kickstarters (2 currently over their goal) Goal of $1,000 - 10 Kickstarters (7 currently over their goal) Goal over $1,000 - 5 Kickstarters (2 currently over their goal) 25 of 35 are over their goals already. Thank you, Egg Embry Love's Labour's Liberated - A 5e RPG Zine POWERED by the DREAMR, a PbtA RPG #ZineQuest That's great - thank you for sharing. I remember in one of our earlier post on Zine Quest that Kickstarter was hoping for low funding goals $1000-$2000 and it looks like the campaign is delivering! Keep up the good work!

I gotta sharpen my dad jokes game!] Thanks, Egg Embry, Wanna-lancer If you're a publisher that would like to share an RPG-related job opportunity in a future article or discuss your RPG crowdfunding project, please contact me here. Egg and Sean, I sent you both an update at the links you provided. Feel free to get in touch anytime and I will update you as I move forward. Thank you!
  • 05:08 AM - Bill Edmunds quoted Egg Embry in post Kickstarter, RPG Zine Quest, and Luke "Burning Wheel" Crane
Yes, that's it exactly! :-) Kickstarter will give an additional promotional push, sites like EN World will write articles that share your work, and there will be more focus on RPG zines as a product during that time period. Can you explain what you mean when you say "Kickstarter will give an additional promotional push?" I've got a project I think will be perfect for this!

  • 12:12 AM - Olaf the Stout quoted Egg Embry in post RPG Crowdfunding News – Era: Lyres, Treacherous Traps, They Came from Beneath the Sea!, The Fantasy Trip Adventures, and more
Olaf the Stout - Speaking strictly as a fan, I agree that publishers could mine their pool of prior backers, it's a logical and, in many cases, a welcome advertising tactic, especially when offering like products. That said, I joined several crowdfunding campaigns that over use that option so I become notification numb to their alerts. As a journalist, I'll keep your question in mind as I talk to crowdfunding publishers in the future. :-) Thanks, Egg Embry, Wanna-lancer If you're a publisher that would like to share an RPG-related job opportunity in a future article or discuss your RPG crowdfunding project, please contact me here. Yeah, I can see how it would quickly become annoying if they overdid it, especially when they’re advertising another Kickstarter and the one you backed still hasn’t been delivered yet. I’ve seen updates like that do nothing but get backers of the original campaign angry. However, I’m sure there’s a happy medium between never and every second day. Maybe one update when the project first goes live and a second update when there is 48-72 hours left as a last chance reminder.

...ynamics, you and your party will have to be very careful about what is happening around you and what is hidden, twisted, in the darkness. The adventure is suitable for novice players like Awakened experts, the important thing is to know the setting of Awaken and be ready to take subtle actions or clash with unclean creatures. At the end of the volume there will also be a bestiary containing ten new creatures, with related statistics tables and special abilities, which will be added to Awaken's bestiary and can be met in this adventure or any other Awaken session. 'The Black Lady' is made up of 48 pages full of images, texts, tables and descriptions of game scenes designed as the original manual of Awaken, to give greater adherence to the basic manual.” If you like what we do here at EN World (the Forums, Columns, News, ENnies, etc) and would like to help support us to bring you MORE please consider supporting our Patreon.
