    I’ve been arguing this as magic vs martial but that’s not a very good way to look at it. Damage is damage, whether from an axe or a ball of fire. A better way to look at it would be damage vs effects (it’s just that effects are often magical). Many effects are more powerful than simply doing damage.     You’re looking at one tiny aspect of magic - damage - when magic can do so much more that has a much greater effect on play. Compare that to martial characters who only ever do damage. Something like hypnotic pattern has no critical effect yet it can lock down half an encounter - no matter how many hp those creatures have - a far more powerful effect than the best possible dpr character could...

    I still disagree that they critical hits should be balanced off against critical failures - no matter how balanced tehy are against each other. Critical hits make martial characters more deadly (it increases their damage) conversely critical failures make martial characters less deadly. So if you have a magic system that is more powerful than the martial system in the game, adding critical hits...

    1. While I sort of agree with this, there neads to be a plot, I have to say that suggesting you use stories like LotR or Beowulf is a terrible idea. This leads to railroading as your players have no agency to alter the story. By all means have a lead where the McGuffin needs to be destroyed at the PlaceOfTerror, but have a backup for when the players refuse that lead, or don't pick up on clues...

    I’ve have had one game at WeWork. It was certainly convenient (more space than any of the group could offer at their house) and no one had any tidying up afterwards.     Frustrated by the door the groups starts to grow bored and many voice that this was perhaps a silly idea, someone even starts a fire.     The castle has been abandoned for over half a century, since it was sacked. Unless the orcs have been there several months intensively rebuilding - I’m which case someone would have heard something - it won’t be in good repair. Finding damaged opening will be a matter of scouting.

    The Forest of Rend is a fairly flat area. Approaching the castle from any direction would be straightforward. It's getting through the forest that would cripple an army - a handful of adventurers on the other hand... Following the road will make finding the castle easier but running into orcs more likely.     As Farquad presses a number of the crystals he quickly realises that they are not buttons. They are made up of common crystal that peasants use for jewelry and mountebanks sell for "magical" remedies. Prying them out would yield a small amount of coin, enough to pay for room and board perhaps.

    Probably not game breaking but you will have to consider balance vs monster issues. Monsters skills are already quite weak vs PCs. But when you combine this with your doubled proficiency later on I think that will be too much. I really don't like this as a fix. How do you reflect situational changes that make the task easier?     I found that playing was kind of like my first few games - possibly because it's hard to feel like you are making poor choices when so much is randomised. But I have to agree, they have put a LOT of complexity behind the screen that doesn't feel anything like old school.

    Cool, that'll be three then. DCC is a hack and slash centered game that tries to give a feel of old school D&D. So character mechanics are minimal.     Reading through, I'm a little irked so much of the rules seem held back for a forthcoming book available in a year or so IF the Kickstarter funds. Especially when half this book was an adventure... Couldn't they have put all the rules in one book and then done the adventure(s) separately? Meh. Here's what his website says about the next book: "Kingdoms & Warfare is a 5th Edition supplement with rules for running countries and organizations like thieves' guilds, churches and wizard colleges, as well as more rules for large scale warfare." Sounds like a nice follow-up expansion to me and not something I was expecting in the Strongholds and Followers book. The warfare rules in the appendix of this current book are more of a bonus as far as I am concerned. Also, 50 of the 265 pages are the adventure. An adventure that helps DMs try out the rules as TallIan indicates. More like a fifth than a half of the book, but who's counting...

    TallIan and Umbran I totally agree with you guys. Like any tool in the DM's toolbox it shouldn't be overused or used flippantly. There needs to be some intention that will add to the story and the fun of the table. Like I said, in that specific scenario I'd probably just have the cultists blast the player and themselves, because it would be a fitting sacrifice they might make for their demon patron. And I think that doing things that can unfairly target a player's character or changing how powers work without a good reason/explanation is poor form. A DM has only as much power as the players allow, since that position comes with the trust that you are going to run the game fairly with fun in mind.

But that's decision point is long since passed.) But the battle for the inn is almost finished. This is just a convenient time to do this: I'm doing something unorthodox. I'm having you level up in the middle of the fight. So everyone is now level 2 and there are still wolves incoming. I'll resume the IC in a few days once everyone has leveled up. Spellcasters gain an unused 1st level spell slot but if your class has to prepare a list of spell for the day, that list remains unchanged until you long rest. (sorry wizards, clerics and druids). Hit points: Take half the die for your class + 1. And you get those HP immediately.

    You’re looking at one tiny aspect of magic - damage - when magic can do so much more that has a much greater effect on play. Compare that to martial characters who only ever do damage. Something like hypnotic pattern has no critical effect yet it can lock down half an encounter - no matter how many hp those creatures have - a far more powerful effect than the best possible dpr character could ever hope to achieve with a single action.While I don't disagree, that's off topic from the need for critical failures to balance critical hits. You were saying that critical hits without critical misses were necessary to balance martial vs. magic, but since magic can also critically hit, critical hits aren't useful as a balancing mechanic of martial vs. magic.

    I still disagree that they critical hits should be balanced off against critical failures - no matter how balanced tehy are against each other. Critical hits make martial characters more deadly (it increases their damage) conversely critical failures make martial characters less deadly. So if you have a magic system that is more powerful than the martial system in the game, adding critical hits without adding critical failures can improve the magic-martial balance.Except you still have spells that use attacks that can be a critical hit. Not to mention the cantrips everyone uses, you also have spells like Steel Wind Strike that can critically hit for 12d10 force damage (against 5 targets), plus you can flood the battlefield with 10 small objects with animate object that each can critically hit for 2d8 damage. Because 5E has so many different ways for casters to make attacks, critical hits are not a good balancing mechanism between martial and magical attacks.

    2. Critical failures can be funny. Most of what I have to say about this is to other commentors in this thread namely: Sorry Shiroiken, I just found your post first. I disagree with the premise. Critical effects should be balanced across the sub-systems of the game. As an example I am playing a wizard through Out of the Abyss - 25 sessions in and my wizard has make exactly one attack roll. So across all the sessions so far he's had 5% chance to critically fail. Compare that to the martial characters who make dozens of attacks each round. If you have critical fails that have a mechanical effect then it needs to affect combat, magic, skill, etc Critical fails can be funny but they need to be in line with the rest of the game. I don't think that belongs in 5e because 5e gives with both hands (compared to 3.x where you got +2 in this and -2 in that). Critical hits in 5e have a very limited effect after level 3The balance is not against how many times you roll an attack, but agains...

I think I caused the confusion where one of my posts says 5 characters and another says four. since 12 characters is a bit on the low side go ahead and make one more so that everyone has five. To be fair, I am also being lazy because I used the character generator and it gave me five. I only posted four of them, the ones I could remember, in case I was only supposed to do four. I’m not convinced I can get through with only four, given my luck with the game... so I’m glad you are making it five!

    yes, a bit. But with +6 it is not too bad. I have hoped that some skill point option would be available in a splat by now or better in the DMG. I don´t know if I´d use it, but that is ok. In the other Thread I proposed proficiency increase at 3,6,9,12,15,18 to go up to 8 and I still believe this would be a good option. I could imagine that if you like expertise capping at +12, you could have it be x1.5 instead of x2. When I spoke about skill points in my post above, you would not get any when yu level up, instead you are just able to have different kinf of proficiencies. I would love to have a default method to gain new proficiencies when you level up, and fortunately there is already one: In the DMG under alternate treasure you can allow characters to train with someone who is exceptional at a skill to gain a new proficiency in a skill, which transfers to spend downtime in special circumstances. U'Tempei's words do seem to upset the crown a little as a few start to grumble but most of the villagers seem content to let strangers risk their life. I don't recall her saying anything that could even remotely be construed as her being better than someone else, especially when she was talking quietly to her companions not announcing to the world that they should get moving. She would never think let alone say something like that. We rushed away too fast for her to confront him again.

Also, what is your opinion on barding for the wolf @jmucchello? will it need proficiency in armour? I have two skills to choose so could that be one of them? Barding is feasible for a wolf, though the beast might not like it. I would call that an Animal Handling extended task to get the wolf to accept the barding. Obviously there's nothing available here for barding. You will have to have it made when you get back to town. There will be downtime after the next "chapter" and you will need downtime to get armor made and the wolf use to wearing it. Are we getting a short rest? That is up to you. Obviously Perin is hoping for some rest. While the townsfolk are in a hurry to leave, they are still abuzz with activity around the cam...
