I’m gonna go with Eberon. The recent Artificer UA isn’t a reiteration, it just examples a few new subclasses, and most people seem to like it. I mean, I like it. And to have that so soon after the last one in February just seems like they’re wanting to get if finished for an official publication.

Sure, I can see that and that's great. Except for weapons with the Reload, Loading or Ammunition properties. Each shot has to be kept track of, per the rules. So a hand crossbow can only shoot a single bolt on a single turn, regardless of how good the person is with it. With a sword attack, you could say "I chop and chop and chop until i cut his arm off!" when a crit determines you cut off...

I may have said this before, but this is a high magic campaign. And by high magic, I mean there are magical items everywhere. And i mean everywhere. The more intelligent undead have been hording what they can find, but for the most part, most people who died and became undead just left whatever they had, or perhaps are still wearing it. Attunement will be very closely regulated, and Magic...

He’s demonstrating the fact that people only ever care about realism when firearms are involved. Nobody cares about whether plate armor is actually only 1 AC more protective than half plate. Nobody cares about how protective armor is against an actual long bow, or the fact that while plate armor may have an effect at stopping an arrow from a longbow, chain mail had no effect whatsoever. So if we...

Artificers aren’t proficient in Heavy Crossbows. Only Hand and Light. So choosing Firebolt is technically more damage than a Light Crossbow. Also, the cantrips are for utility, and having up to four of them that you can switch out is useful. Mending, guidance, thorn ship, spare the dying, there are all kinds of utility in these. It’s not good to just think of everything by its combat utility....

I disagree vehemently. It isn’t “survival of the physically fittest”, it is “survival of those who survived”. Sometimes being able to outsmart your opponent is better than being physically more powerful, and it is entirely possible that those who survived did so not simply due to overwhelming strength, but because they were smarter. The smarter ones learn how to defend against predators easier,...

As a DM, I've always interpreted it to mean that as long as the thing you've transformed into can cast spells, you have access to all your spells, especially for Warlocks and Wizards. Warlocks and Wizards LEARN their spells. This whole "only what the stat bloc" says is actually crap. I understand that their mental statistics change, but their memories don't. For wizards, they still have their...

Hawke and Sphynx can each move 1 Goblin body per round. It will therefore take 6 rounds (36 seconds) to move all 12 Goblin bodies. While the bodies are being moved, both Nimbar and Sphynx notice sounds coming from the other hallway, also. A decision is made to barricade each side (east and west) with 6 bodies each. As it turns out, the Goblins and their "friend" arrive on Round 7. Their...

I have tried to coordinate an online, active game twice, since I have been a member of this site. Both failed to come to fruition for at least one player was a no show, each time. I’m not saying you’re entirely wrong, but you do make some general assumptions that would negate your argument. You state that an r-selected species would not gain sapience because this has to be taught, but who’s to say their primitive culture didn’t have their offspring live in the wild until they have grown to a point, and then welcome the survivors into the larger group. In a planet as...

I have no issues with an alien race with multiple genders either. I did want to point out the issues with having such a high birth rate, and the issues of having so many genders. More genders, especially 5, and having all of them needed for the reproductive process is very restricting on the species, which actually could be a contribution to them having such a high birth rate. If they don't...

I wouldn't necessarily agree with the first point, as while the divorce rate has been going down, it's still between 40% and 50%. Marriage should always be carefully considered. I think this is why, in times past, a girl's parents had more say in who she married. it wasn't because the parents, usually the father, wanted something out of it, it was because they didn't trust a teenager to know...

By choosing not to do so, they become part of the problem. By choosing to do so, they become part of the solution. Once it is legitimized, it becomes rampant. Like I said, a flourishing porn industry, rampant STD's, broken homes left and right, 1.5 million abortions a year. This is, unfortunately, the direction our society has gone, and I don’t believe we quite understand the ramifications of thinking this way. Since the sexual revolution, sex has become “personal” and “none of anyone else’s business.” It has become a situation where we believe we have the right to do as we please, because we are adults. Marriage has been blasted as being outdated, secular...

Introduction:
Truth is more important than vanity.
About Me:
I started playing D&D during the Thanksgiving Holidays of 1976 or '77. I had gotten a pamphlet, single book, version for my birthday. Christmas of that year, I got the red box set complete with "Caves of Chaos". A couple of years later I was introduced to AD&D by some friends at school.

I have played basic D&D, AD&D 1e, 2e, 3.0-3.5e, Traveler, Gamma World, GURPS, Shadowrun, and Vampyres. I have now played 5.0 and Pathfinder as well.

As I have gotten older, I have found much more entertainment in the role-play and less so in the hack-n-slash.

  • 08:12 PM - Tellerian Hawke mentioned MacConnell in post SUPPLEMENTAL NOTE: AERIAL MOVEMENT
Actually, MacConnell, you reminded me of something; when using magical modes of flight, you can't "run," i.e., you can't "fly faster," but creatures (such as birds) with natural flight speeds CAN. Thus, the Eagle (which has an 80) can "run" at a rate of 320, which as I said above, is 37 miles per hour. But using the run rules requires more math: You can run for a number of rounds equal to your Constitution score, but after that you must make a DC 10 Constitution check to continue running. You must check again each round in which you continue to run, and the DC of this check increases by 1 for each check you have made. When you fail this check, you must stop running. A character who has run to his limit must rest for 1 minute (10 rounds) before running again. During a rest period, a character can move no faster than a normal move action. You can’t run across difficult terrain (see page 148), or if you can’t see where you’re going. A run represents a speed of about 12 miles per hour for an unencumbered h...

@tglassy: I've been playing D&D since 1979. (Blog post: HERE) I've known @MacConnell since 1989; He's been working on his game system since the early 1990's, if I remember correctly; this latest version is AMAZING. I've play-tested all of its iterations, and I have always enjoyed it. His system is fair, balanced, and consistent. I am a game designer myself, and I can assure you that his game is well-designed, and well-thought-out. What MacConnell means by "do anything you can imagine" is that you simply state what you'd like to do, and he will tell you what you need to roll, or what new skill(s) you need to acquire, in order to do so. He will also let you know if what you want to do is unfeasible, or if it is beyond your current capabilities. Since his game is heavily mathematical, he usually takes care of the calculations himself, so the players can focus on plot and storyline; however, he also explains the system quite well on his community page, so that you can see for yourself how the system works. If you are comfortable with doing the calculations yourself, you a...

I haven't checked it in a while since it has been to hot to turn on my PC.) I've been having to deal with ongoing heatwaves and problems with my allergies and asthma (plus some chronic pain flareups). July is always a hard month for me, and I spend as much time as I can at the malls in order to escape the heat and pollen. Today will be another one of those days and maybe the next two days as well.

@MacConnell The surrendered Orc (Orc #4) does not threaten any squares. If you walk away from him, the most he can do is get up and run. You are a 25 foot movement away from being able to help Tam; if you moved that distance, you'd end up in the square between Tam and Respen. If you then cast a spell, you'd provoke an attack from Orc #3; however, you could simply attack the Orc without provoking, and just finish him off. He is grievously wounded. Lathir heals another 7 pts. for shifting back to Human form. Lathir is completely healed.

I'm going to post in here sometime today, but I am going to be out for a bit, so the In Character thread won't be put up until later in the day. I'm going to make some assumptions about where each PC is as the game starts unless any of you have any specific ideas. Tellerian Hawke and JustinCase's PCs are already settled in Cauldron City, but I'm assuming -- Thateous, MacConnell, and Scotley -- that your PCs are all newcomers to the city unless you say otherwise.

Looking forward to see what that all is about. Also, I didn't roll Appearance: 4D6.HIGH(3) = [1, 5, 3, 6] = 14 Not sure if re-rolls apply: Re-roll 1: 1D6 = [6] = 6 - so either 14 or 17 MacConnell, wow, what rolls!

Take your time MacConnell. The current roleplaying encounter doesn't really allow for the fitting in of a desert elf. We'll add Thersean in as soon as you're able to get the PC done. We ned to come up with an idea for why he's in Bluffside. Is he looking for someone? Is he just visiting? Was he brought to the city against his will? It's possible he could be attached to one of the embassies in the city. The desert elves wouldn't have there own embassy, but he could allies among the Dragori or the Sixam Ieuna. The Dragori are a humanoid reptilian race with a powerful empire in the Burning Sands. And they are typically lawful neutral. The Sixam Ieuna are a winged humanoid race who live mainly in the mountains. They too are typically lawful neutral. Either race would be good patrons for the desert elves to find a place in Bluffside. Perhaps your character is in the city to try to have an embassy created for his people. EDIT: FYI, those races are from the Bluffside sourcebook.

  • 08:22 PM - Ancalagon quoted MacConnell in post How to better PBP - a controversial suggestion (all systems)
I have found that the same few people seem to respond to all requests despite the number of available members on this site. I have also observed that unless the offer is from 5e or PF it will get no traffic. The application of play has to be adjusted to the PbP setting. This is the burden of the GM / DM. In video game versions like Neverwinter Nights, bingers can elevate characters 10 levels or more in a single sitting, even with the mechanics changed to award about 1% of the usual XP of a table-top session. In a PbP, I have found that the offer needs to be increased. I tend to offer XP once a week or once every ten posts, depending on the participation of players. This seems to fix the sigma that characters are never going to advance since a single combat can take more than a week to complete. As a player, I have found that it takes about 15 minutes, tops, to make a post. As a GM, it can take hours. As a GM, I try to post on a regular schedule, the same day each week. This gives players a...

  • 12:42 AM - Tellerian Hawke quoted MacConnell in post Plans Reconsidered
"No! Sannit is making sure that there is no immediate threat, but these are men not children. We have not the time to hold their hands and establish their community. Uncle Buliwyf may even find the offer insulting as he has taken it upon himself to lead these men. We have an obligation to return to Southroad Fair and prepare them for the impending arrival of an Ansylin force. [...] What we need to be doing, at this point, is following the shore then crossing the desert. We need to return to Southroad Fair as far in advance of that army as we can, then decide how we want to deal with it." Merin and Tor both nod in understanding, and Merin adds, "You're right, my friend, I think that Tor and I both tend to over-analyze things sometimes. Thanks for keeping us on-track. Let's get going then." Merin and Tor then follow Sheldon and the others, as they begin following the shore line, starting the next leg of their urgent journey.

A person who is actually offended will not read Twain or Dickens or Dostoevsky or Tolkien or Martin So you say. I question how well you understand people who are actually offended. I am actually offended by some things Tolkien said. I have read and re-read LOTR. I am actually offended by Kipling's passages about Kimball O'Hara's "white blood", and I consider "Kim" a great novel. If I were a literature teacher, I'd assign it as required reading for students... and I'd praise its use of foreshadowing, and its descriptions of scene and character... while recognizing that those passages imply that some of my students have racial superiorities over their fellow students. I have used some of Kipling's "Just So Stories" as bedtime stories. I would not use others. I love "Game of Thrones", and look forwards to future chapters. I love how GRRM responded to the Sad Puppies and Rabid Puppies. That doesn't mean I accept his portrayals of the Unsullied and the Dothraki without any qualms or reservations, n...

Should the works of literature be altered in their vocabulary due to the propaganda of politically motivated societal manipulation? Let's bracket the question of whether Gygax's PHB is a "work of literature". Who is talking about altering it? The hypothetical 6th edition of D&D doesn't exist yet - but if it were published without using the word "race", what about it would have been altered?

@Aldarc The original question to which you refer is too far back for me to find but to address your reiteration of "What would be lost?": The answer is sovereignty. Should the works of literature be altered in their vocabulary due to the propaganda of politically motivated societal manipulation? No. A person who is actually offended will not read Twain or Dickens or Dostoevsky or Tolkien or Martin, but their works, or future works in the case of Martin, should not be altered. This creates a grander issue of promoting prejudice as written works such as Slaughterhouse Five, Lolita, The brothers Karmonov, The Bible, and The Quran have all, before, been targeted for destruction by those 'offended' by their existence. The D&D Player's Handbook is not a work of literature. It's a reference book. There are people who DO read it cover to cover, anal retentive pedantry of geeks none withstanding it's not meant to be read cover to cover as a novel. My point being it's not exactly a great comp...

You're talking about works that stem from a time when such words had different meaning. While one can debate on how to deal with literature like that (and I'd go with a disclaimer/foreword/comment in any case!), what we're discussing here is how we'd like to go forward in t...

Should the works of literature be altered in their vocabulary due to the propaganda of politically motivated societal manipulation? No. While I take issue with some of your vocabulary there, I agree with the conclusion. As mentioned upthread, I’m black. A decade or so ago, certain publishers of classic literature decided to edit in less inflammatory language than the writers used, such as was used in racist character names. In response to this, my family in unison went on a book buying spree. ...to buy the unedited editions. Not big fans of revisionism, us.

Adrin conveys his exterior observations to the others at a convenient time. After circumnavigating the fort. He rides his horse inside, dismounts, then leads the animal to the stables. He collects his back, bedroll, and blanket, leaving the horse unburdened. He takes his sword and affixes it to his back in his non-hostile carrying method. He joins the other for the tour and graciously accepts the offer of a hot meal.As we are in the stables, I look your way as I tend to my horse. "Hey, Adrin, how comfortable were you on the ride? I would have liked a pillow on the saddle, but other than that, I can't complain."

Shillaadrini nods his affirmation and turns on the balls of his feet to follow on the heels of Sarvek. As he retrieves his horse, he asks of the group, "So, any preliminary plan of action?" Emudre says "I'm prepared to leave tomorrow morning, if you are all ready. But let's enjoy this evening and share a pitcher or two of wine in the tavern.... it would be a pleasure to enjoy a drink with all of you before our journey starts. Perhaps we can learn some news or gossip regarding Oleg's Trading Post or our journey ahead." Emudre will pay for all the drinks. GM please let me know how much to deduct from my character sheet. Sheldon - "I wonder what those Mhytres bored into that released toxic fumes. This is a whole new territory for us." Sannit replies, "There are many good things that come from under the ground. It would be wise to assume that there are just as many dangerous things. Perhaps in time we will have a better answer, and maybe something we can use to our advantage." Merin looks thoughtful as he watches the animals below: "It should be an easy matter to tame and befriend some, or perhaps even all, of these animals. Should we do that?" Bolo answers Merin, "Perhaps this would be a good exercise for those still beginning their path with Way." Turtle watches the burro's and licks his lips. Surely the people won't need all of them.

  • 11:16 PM - Knightfall quoted MacConnell in post Kulan: Knightfall's Shackled City Legacy PbP Game [IC]
Before Brother Pi can respond to the questions from Arinitam, the explosion shakes the city. The dwarf tries desperately to get out of the way, jumping into a nearby alley and avoiding most of the flames. As he looks around to find something to douse the flames before they reach the drains, Brother Pi finds only a handful of stones in the alleyway, which he shoves in front of the drains but it has little effect. Oleander moves quickly at the initial explosion finding whatever dirt and water are close at hand vainly trying to extinguish the spreading flame, but it seems an impossible task. He has no cantrip or magics that will help. Both Brother Pi and Oleander deft avoid the worst of the flaming explosion. When trying to smother the flames, Oleander thinks for split second he might have gotten lucky as some of the dirt he throws at the fire seems to snuff sections of the flames. But is to no avail. The flames seem to jump over his quick and dirty fire break and heads directly into the drain...

"Explosive," Brother Pi mutters as he tries to get up from the ground. Dusting himself off, he looks Arinitam in the eyes. "Apologies, but this is a highly explosive substance. One spark, and..." The dwarf motions with his hands, moving them apart quickly as if holding a fast expanding invisible ball. "What substance would that be, eh?" Arinitam looks on the ground and sniffs the air. "I don't smell anything odorous. Of course, my nose isn't good for smelling. It's been broken more than once, I tell yous." Oleander rolls to his feet and dusts off his clothing. "Perhaps I should put on weight and take up axe fighting. That was terribly uncoordinated of me. I suppose we look all the part of some side street entertainment." He laughs at himself. "I would not rob you even if I were starving. Well," he laughs again. "Now that we have distracted you from lighting that thing. I will assure you our clumsy attempt at acquiring it was to save all our lives. That strange aroma is produc...

  • 03:39 AM - Aust Thale quoted MacConnell in post Respen & Vale To Proceed
Lathir suggests to the group that he, Thallok, and Vale, all three, range ahead just at the edge of the available light source to optimize the use of their vision just in case there might be some danger attracted to the light. Vale: ~ Aye, I hear you clearly now, my Able. What do you think? Left or Right? ~ As Lathir gathers himself after his clearly changed personage, and during his examination of the water, Vale studies the cave while apparently in his own deep thoughts. Vale chuckles every so often, mildly tickled at something that isn't readily apparent to the others, but his axe appears to gather even the least amount of light to it, the bladed edge and even the hilt shimmering in soft fluorescent light. He continues about his work, examining the tunnel at some length for any additional signs, including whether air is stagnant or breezy, whether the tunnel looks new or old, as well as the type of rock and general direction and depth of the cave at any particular spot. He takes...

"No! Don't!" Oleander is not really built for brute action, but is much more suited to feats of dexterity. He quickly launches himself forward, attempting to snatch the pipe from the man's hands. Arinitam reacts instinctively to Oleander's rush towards him and steps back out of reach of the elf. Oleander catches a foot on a loose cobblestone and falls face first in the alley. The man has a bewildered look o his face mixed with some fear. "Yous would rob me of my pipe," he says in shock. "Lady Ketisa said yous were here tos help." When Brother Pi tries to do the same, he puts his back up to the wall and looks at them in fear. Pi fails to snatch the pipe away but does manage to trip over Oleander's prone form and tumble onto the cobblestones. Arinitam laughs at the scene in front of him. He's momentarily forgotten about lighting his pipe. "What kind of heroes are yous twos?" he wags one finger at them. Seemingly pacing, but really remaining within the same space, Oleander finally exclaims. "Oil of Vitriol! Now I remember. In addition to being used by addicts and healers, the fumes from the stuff are highly flammable, explosive even under the right, or rather wrong, conditions. We need to be very cautious here." "Explosive?" Brother Pi repeats quietly. "Hmm. Perhaps they prepared some form of attack, disguised as simple vandalism." The dwarf looks to Oleander. "Perhaps if we know if this happened elsewhere too, we can see the scale of it and maybe find a pattern to this foulness." He sniffs, and his face screws up. "Stinks." Oleander takes only a moment to considered Brother Pi's words. "I like your thinking. Once can be an isolated incident; but if this has been repeated, we might be able to follow the pattern to find the culprit." Brother Pi nods. "Maybe that kind girl knows of other people who were targeted. Let's ask her." Almost as if on cue, Ketisa Zalachia comes bac...

Lathir engaged the party. "I am not familiar with the operation of the alarm runes. If it is feasible to walk out into the wood and back. I am sure we can retrieve a log to place over the well opening, then tie the rope to that." Respen: "If we set off the runes, we need to be willing to move quickly and retreat. I am sure there are logs or trees with sturdy branches to cut down that are within the perimeter. I have some rope and gear that I dropped when we entered the place. It's in the bushes. Rope and hook, torches, a crowbar and hammer. And flasks of oil. Who else has rope or gear?" An idea crosses Respen's mind, and he smiles ear to ear. "Dewydd, you have the Ring of Feather Falling? That's our way in. Dewydd mentioned this in conversation a week or so ago. We each use it to descend to the floor below, with fishing line or even threaded rope through it to pull back up to the next person. Weight isn't an issue. We can move our gear down the well as well. Yes. I am always interested in new players. Look through any of the links above. If you have played D&D, it helps to think of the archetype you most like to play. To join in with us, post an image to the editable character records thread above. For the sake of balance in the game, stick with a humanoid, meaning 2 arms and legs, and we will go from there. Looks like the link to the character sheet thread isn't working. I get an invalid thread page.

  • 05:50 PM - Knightfall quoted MacConnell in post Kulan: Knightfall's Shackled City Legacy PbP Game [OOC]
I'm still waiting to see what Oleander knows (he rolled a skill check) before posting again for Brother Pi. Hmm, I'd forgotten about that roll. Thanks for the reminder. Me too. Sweet oil of Vitriol: Oleander remembers one very important aspect of sweet oil of vitriol, it is a highly flammable liquid. It wouldn't take much for the oil to ignite, even trace amounts of it. An open flame could cause the remaining oil (or the vapor in the air) to ignite but even naturally high temperatures could ignite the oil. (It's not a hot day, so the suns rays likely won't ignite it.) Vapor formed from the oil is heavier than air, so it can collect low to the ground. The oil's vapor may travel considerable distances to ignition sources, which does not need to be an open flame. If any of the vapors have traveled down towards Crater Lake, they could come into contact with any sort of explosive source, such as a forge or cooking fire. If so, then BOOM! The oil is a powerful drug that is highly intoxicating ...

Brother Pi shakes his head. "I am no monk or cleric. Every man is my brother, and one helps his family for no other reason than it's the right thing to do." Master Zalachia nods in understanding... Returning his gaze to Oleander, the dwarf motions for the elf to join them. "Come, my inquisitive friend. Care to help me solve a mystery?" Brother Pi asks with a kind smile. "Anikagar here was telling me about mysterious markings in an, err, unconventional medium..." Pi greets the young woman with a respectful bow. "Pleased to meet you, Miss Ketisa. If you are half as perceptive as you are beautiful, your help will be of great use." "Thank you for your kind words, Brother Pi," she replies to him as they walk to her father's shop. A serious frown appears on Brother Pi's face as he studies the scene, leaning on his broom and occassionally sniffing the surface or scraping with his finger. Once he gets a picture of what the markings looked like, he turns to Oleander. "Those runes are n...
