I think the Lord of the Rings (and Hobbit) films and Game of Thrones have had a far bigger impact than Critical Role or Stranger Things. They brought fantasy into the mainstream and paved the way. We've also had a couple of generations raised on Harry Potter. The Lord of the Rings movies are ancient by comparison. Return of the King was released in 2003, 16 years ago. Whatever effect they were going to have on D&D's popularity should have hit with 3e.

Thanks. Your analysis matches main and themote I think about it the more I think it is the right point from an RP perspective. One point though, I thought proficiency was based on character level not class level. My mistake. I checked the multiclassing rules, and you're correct; you get the proficiency bonus of your total character level, not the individual class level.

I am playing a half orc Barbarian. Currently 8th level and I cannot decide whether or not to multiclass to Fighter when I get to 9th. The post-8th level class features for Barbarians seem not that interesting until very high level. I could take the next three levels of Fighter and get all kinds of interesting things and perhaps even stick with it til 12th to get three attacks and more ASIs. What do people think? It fits for multiple reasons from a rp'ing point of view as well. Looking things over, I'd take Fighter the rest of the way, ending at Barbarian 8 / Fighter 12. Certainly if you're taking Fighter any significant ways, you have to get to level 11 for the second tier of Extra Attack. Most significant gains are in the 7-11 level range. You lose out on the +1 rage damage from 9th level Barbarian, as well as the critical hit die, but Fighter 12 gets its 4th ASI/feat. The ASI is unlikely to compete with the extra damage (assuming you've already gotten to 20 Str, and possibly 20 Con, ...

He's a brutal half orc who never fitted in any where but is slowly finding his place in the world and becoming less barbaric and more tactical. Then I would MC to fighter. And I wouldn't likely look back. See, after initial creation, I make most of my choices based upon what's developing within the story. Not math, not a "build', not min/maxing. Not "Ooh, if I switch to ___ I'll get xyz - vs staying a ____ & only gaining B". Story. Even if the choice is anything but optimal. It's how in a PF game last year I ended up with a Tiefling wizard:14 (divination)/PALADIN:1 And the character began as LE & along the way converted to LG. Not the arc I'd generally envisioned. Absolutely non-optimal. But hey, that's how play evolved. So.... Wizard:14/Paladin:1 And here in 5e I'm faced with a tough story choice for my 1/2ling warlock. The next time she lvs she'll get an ASI/Feat. 1) Increase her Wisdom? She's young. An actual kid. Age 11 now. Because she doesn't know any better/underst...

  • 10:57 PM - Quickleaf quoted The Hierophant in post Coming in May: Mordenkainen's Tome of Foes! [UPDATED!]
They're B/X drow aren't they? Kinda. There are several similarities that could lead to equating Shadow Elves with Drow... 1. They both dwell underground. 2. They both have a matriarchal society, or at the very least a matriarchal religion and religious leaders. 3. They are both perceived as being evil. However the Shadow Elves seem more Neutral, and more isolationist than Drow with their wicked plans for the surface world. 4. They are both referred to using terms usually reserved for less than wholesome things, i.e. dark and shadow. With the Shadow Elves, IIRC, they had "engineers" that caused some kind of magical "nuclear bomb" which resulted in them being cast out of Alfheim. They hate the elves of Alfheim, but are otherwise coldly indifferent to other surface races. Honestly, it's hard to remember much from back in those days as I was a kid. I do know a Shadow Elf appeared in Uncaged: Faces of Sigil in the Planescape line.

Thanks, but I am not sure I understood anything after "campaign management tool". Sorry, I keep forgetting that they haven't done a good job of sending around their visionary stuff. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=cU7YoDBn9wM Watch their demo reel... If it works, it will be really cool.

Thanks, but I am not sure I understood anything after "campaign management tool".It sounds like what he's saying is that, if you use Twitch to livestream your D&D game, at some point you'll have the ability to have information from your D&D Beyond character sheet show up on the screen for the audience to see. That said, I don't think the plan is to introduce any sort of VTT function to D&D Beyond. It's not roll20 or Fantasy Grounds. It's a character / monster builder and rules reference app.

New to the thread but I wanted to chip in. I am a long time D&D player relatively new to 5e. I'm playing a barbarian who took GWM at 4th level. Yes the combination of GWM and Reckless Attack is powerful. But I don't think it is too powerful. People have already commented on casters and those comments are accurate. The other martial combatants in our party are an assassin Rogue who can deal plenty of damage on a sneak attack and as a light foot halfling gets lots of opportunity to sneak attack. And a ranger who uses Hunter's Mark and Colossus Slayer. Before I got GWM both were routinely dealing more damage than the barbarian. That doesn't seem right when the barbarian is more squarely focused on combat than either of the other two and has far fewer options (both in and out of combat). GWM has gone a long way to balance that out. hunters mark, sharpshooter+ hordebreaker is even better. Another attack you can add +10 damage onto.

But the problem is this: your Rogue is giving up a lot of sturdiness and staying power,...

I think that is a totally different point. Meditation may well improve concentration but it improves concentration when one is engaged in other activities and not meditating. When one meditates one is not generally concentrating (on other things). I see concentration in spell exactly as the level of concentration you get with mindfulness meditation = mind focus. This isn't streneous at all, and to prove, you can even fight, research, do acrobatics while you concentrate without any penalty. Is very different that concentrate in an Excel sheet, what is streneous and, while fighting, would give me desadvatange. But I get your point.
  • 10:58 AM - zaratan quoted The Hierophant in post Warlock, Hex, and Short Rests: The Bag of Rats Problem
To my mind, and giving the words what I consider to be their ordinary meaning, "concentration" and "rest" are mutually exclusive. If I am concentrating on something I am not resting. If I am resting I am clearing my mind and relaxing. I would therefore rule that you cannot rest and concentrate on a spell. (I think the problem here may be that "concentration" in D&D isn't really what I would call "concentration" but instead is a mechanism to prevent multiple spells of particular types being active and that mechanism is called "concentration". But I still favour my interpretation of the rules.) So, meditation is knowed for improve concentration (mindfulness and concentration are two different things by meditsion studies). Monk ki text state that they can meditate in a short rest and get all benefits. But casters don't? "No no no, the concentration in spell is different than that one you reach with meditation..."[emoji19]

Where is that in the PHB? Under the Half Orc trait Savage Attacks (PHB 41): Savage Attacks. When you score a critical hit with a melee weapon attack, you can roll one of the weapon’s damage dice one additional time and add it to the extra dam age of the critical hit. Emphasis mine. ONE of the DICE.

As someone new to 5e what are the problems with these builds? What are infinite simulacra? Multiple attacks (5-11 attacks a round) +10 damage per attack with a hitratio of 50% or more for GWM/Sharpshooter. The Sorlock ting is just a lot of damage, very easy build. The infinite simulacrum thing is you use the spell to clone yourself creating a simulacrum with the wish spell who then clones you creating a simulacrum with the wish spell who then clones you creating a simulacrum with the wish spell who then........
