  • 01:04 AM - Hand of Evil quoted Sithikurro in post Two Days Left To Vote For Most Anticipated RPG of 2018!
L5R 5th ed Hand of Evil - can you write what you know about the Witcher RPG? I know next to nothing, except the fact that we had one Witcher RPG here in Poland years ago (didn't like it at all). But I guess the new one is something else. Setting wise the game is taking place during the early part of the war and focus is not on Witchers but other classes for players to play in that period of time. This was very disappoint to hear for me. Yes, there are Witchers but they are loners and shunned. They did not talk much on the system, calling it a "life path" where actions impacted the characters. The good/bad news is that CD Project Red had not signed off of anything as of Gen Con 2017, so things could change, which I think may be happening, as no game release date has been forth coming.

Question 1: Have you ever actually started a level 1 PC and got, through gaming (no-level skipping) to level 20? No. Biggest runs have been probably 14-15 levels in 3e, so almost but not quite there. Especially since after a while we always started games at 3rd level typically. Question 2: Have played more than one or two adventures as level 20th PC? Neither. Question 3: I don't like playing high-level PCs because... I haven't got there yet in 5e... but I can say that in 3e I didn't like having so many options to keep in mind (especially as a spellcaster) that I usually ended up ignoring the low-level stuff to just focus on the highest, and that doesn't feel good.

Question 1: Have you ever actually started a level 1 PC and got, through gaming (no-level skipping) to level 20? Not yet. Question 2: Have played more than one or two adventures as level 20th PC? Nope. Question 3: I don't like playing high-level PCs because... The only time I've played at 20+ level was in 3.5e. It was a lot of work. I doubt that'll be the case in 5e, though.

I'm curious about your opinion and experience, so share your thoughts! I've been thinking lately that I would like to run a 20th-level-oriented campaign but make the PCs start from level 1, although perhaps with a handful of magic items like a Horn of Valhalla and a Staff the Magi. From my past experience I'm confident that this sort of sink-or-swim approach levels the PCs up very quickly so I'm not particularly worried about PCs never reaching level 20; what would be unusual about this campaign would be that it is oriented from the beginning toward 20th-level play and includes plenty of interesting challenges (physical, magical, economic, or political) that are nontrivial for 20th level players. I'm still thinking about how to do this but so far I'm sure that I want a cosmopolitan atmosphere, a rotating cast of mutually-antagonistic epic-level NPCs (if PCs can quickly go from 1st to 20th level, NPCs can too), probably a mythic underworld, and time travel. Minimal emphasis on XP gain or tradit...

Question 1: Have you ever actually started a level 1 PC and got, through gaming (no-level skipping) to level 20? Yes. The (soon to end) campaign I'm currently playing in we're 20th level now. I made it to 30th level (DMing and playing) in 5E. Question 2: Have played more than one or two adventures as level 20th PC? For 5E - not yet. Not sure I will ... but I have plans to have a cross-over event from my wife's campaign to mine which will combine a couple of groups for 20th level shenanigans. Question 3: I don't like playing high-level PCs because... The biggest issue I see is analysis paralysis on the side of players. They have too many options and don't want to "waste" high level spells and powers when it's not necessary. A fair number of players hold back for that "big fight" that never seems to happen. The other problem is simply one of speed. Players who role. One. Die. At. A. Time. I get it. Your fighter has 10 attacks and you don't have that many dice. Roll a...

Question 1: Have you ever actually started a level 1 PC and got, through gaming (no-level skipping) to level 20? A friend & player in my 4e Loudwater game played Lirael the Ranger from level 1 to level 29, while also writing a bunch of good-selling teen fantasy books, creating fantastic hand-crafted magic wands, doing a professional paint job on several of my minis, and raising a son & husband  - not everyone has the dedication to put 5.5 years into the same PC though, or the skill to keep them alive through 5 and a half years of my GMing. :D I have another friend & player has played Hakeem the 5e Barbarian from 1 to 19 over the past 2.5 years, but he's planning to retire and become a house husband just as soon as he faces & survives his final battle with Kainos the Warbringer, demigod son of Ares (any day now). We'll see how that goes... My son played William the Wizard MU 4 to 17 in Classic before he died, and has played William's son Bravery from Fighter 1 to 19 now. And ...

Question 1: Have you ever actually started a level 1 PC and got, through gaming (no-level skipping) to level 20? Question 2: Have played more than one or two adventures as level 20th PC? Question 3: I don't like playing high-level PCs because... Q1: I ran a 5e conversion of the 3.5 Age of Worms adventure path. The conversion is posted to this site. We started April 2014 under the D&D Next playtest rules, and finished May 2017. Q2: We played chapter 11 as level 20 PCs for 2-3 months. Chapter 12 used level 20 PCs with one epic boon and ran 3-4 months. Q3: No issues with level 20 PCs.

Question 1: Have you ever actually started a level 1 PC and got, through gaming (no-level skipping) to level 20? Yes, once in the 3.5 era. I have gotten close a few times in Pathfinder. Question 2: Have played more than one or two adventures as level 20th PC? No, the lack of material and hassle of running high level is not worth it. Also, after starting at level 1 the group wanted a new campaign flavor and characters to build. Question 3: I don't like playing high-level PCs because... I prefer a gritty experience that isn't epic. Resource management is key to my enjoyment and level 20 characters have all the tools to mitigate it. Creating content for high level games in 3.X/PF is an absolute chore. My preferred game is now PF and I like to call it quits by about level 14. I am in a 5E game now and believe it to be better suited for high level play. Though I am only level 8 and its a very slow leveling game so I cant comment on 5E specifically at level 20 yet. My thoughts so far are that...

Question 1: Have you ever actually started a level 1 PC and got, through gaming (no-level skipping) to level 20? Yes, though not in 5e (yet). * Back in the early/mid 80's when we were still playing some BECMI we had several games that reached lv20+ (the cap for fighters/clerics/magic-users/thieves was 36 & ...... I forget what for Elves/Dwarves/1/2lings). Anyways I had a fighter that just barely made it into the Master books lvs (so 30th lv? if memory serves) & an Elf that had near maxed out in the Companion book before we abandoned that version of the game altogether. *Highest I've ever gotten AD&D (either 1e or 2e) characters is into the mid-teens. I've got a fair # of those. *3x/PF - I've got a Cavalier/Hellknight & a divination Wizard, both 16th lv + 6 tiers of Mythic. *5e: My highest lv character to date is my 1/2ling warlock at 7th lv. But I see 5e most often from the DMs side of the screen, so.... Question 2: Have played more than one or two adventures as level 20th PC? ...

Because you know what? Playing level 20th is so-much-fun! All the spells, all the abilities are there for you - at last - and you can feel the power of your PC. I agree with this, and it is the reason I am always tinkering with high-level / epic play. My groups have never really reached much beyond lvl 10-12 when starting at lvl 1, but we always do a few adventures at high-max level for the fun of it.
  • 05:06 PM - Tony Vargas quoted Sithikurro in post This is the end, my beautiful friend (?) - or endgame in 5e
Question 1: Have you ever actually started a level 1 PC and got, through gaming (no-level skipping) to level 20? Only in 4e, and it goes to 30, which we haven't gotten to, yet - 22nd in the campaign I'm in, 24th in the one I'm running, which is moving faster... In 1e, the highest I got starting from first was 12th. I ran an AD&D campaign that finished in 2e after 10 years, with most characters no higher than 14th. (One 18th level character was a 2e variant class that need less exp to level than a thief, and was very weak, essentially like a 3e commoner or expert.) The 3e campaigns I was in went to 13th, and probably should have ended sooner. ;( But, 5e I almost exclusively run, and that intro games at conventions & AL, so low-level, which also isn't ideal, you have to be careful with 1st level parties, especially. Question 2: Have played more than one or two adventures as level 20th PC? Yes, a fair number of epic adventures. Levels 21 to 26, so far, including games starting at Epic...
