One last point. When one of my players PC dies, their new PC will be 1 Grade less than their original PC. Death = -1 Grade worth This is the same for players joining the group, always 1 Grade less. The only way they can catch up is by pushing themselves to solve more problems and by being brave and smart in their decisions.

Don't forget, this is about rewarding players who take the initiative. If there is a player taking the lead most of the time and solving a lot of the problems and the rest of the party don't mind that and are still enjoying themselves. The XP reward would not work, the gap would only get bigger. A REP reward may be more fitting. "Your fame travels far good sir, we have heard of your deeds"

What you say is 100% true. That's why we have to be picky with groups that we join, groups that have the same attitude to gameplay as we ourselves do and when we don't, it's finding that middle ground. E.g. giving the entire party a set amount of XP for each task and then, rewarding an individual player each session of play.

Your argument is very clear and there are valid reason for giving a single range of XP to the entire party. But going back to your illustration, why would one PC get more XP than another? (resulting in a quicker level up). It is because that character did some exceptional, e.g. solved a puzzle, planning, taking the lead, saved the day etc. For myself, rewarding that player with bonus XP is a...

The first roll is against vital defense, to target that persons square. So you will almost certainly hit even if it lands next to the person, thanks to the burst radius. For the person in cover, you apply the soak of whatever object he is behind. So something wooden like a door/table etc. would have a SOAK of 5, take that from the damage and apply it to the person in cover. For steel, rock or...

  • 08:15 PM - Steven Barker quoted knikpiw in post WOIN XP and advancement when grades are not the same across the party
If you base it off an average party grade (which is fine, if you prefer that), then people aren't getting the same effective gain each time. Some are getting more than a tenth of their next grade, some are getting less than a tenth. Yeah, that is exactly what I was suggesting. By slightly boosting those who have fallen behind (or slightly holding back the folks who are ahead), the party will tend to converge on the same grade, as a constant difference in XP will shrink relative to the amount needed for a new grade. I think that a group that is mostly the same grade will be more cohesive, as everyone can contribute to a similar degree. If some characters are way ahead of others (e.g. always a full grade ahead, or seven tenths of a grade or whatever), the ones in the lead may do most of what needs to be done, not just because their players are the most dynamic or creative, but because their characters are also the most capable. This is most notable at low grades, where each step from grade 3 t...

  • 01:18 AM - easl quoted knikpiw in post Helmets!
Guess it's just the re-sale value then  Well...not just that. 1. Higher quality items can hold upgrades. Those aren't specified for helms, but I could definitely see allowing them to include eliminating the defense and initiative penalties that some helm types start with. 2. An exceptional quality helm is required if you want to enchant it. 3. An exceptional quality black metal helm is required if you want to give it 2-3 enchantments. ....those are official. Now, a couple unofficial ideas... 4. Items have HP and soak for when someone attempts to destroy/damage them. While there's no explicit rules for damaging a helm, it seems very reasonable to me that higher quality construction could add HP, soak, or both. 5. On the more story-side, I could see a unique, famous, or obviously expensive helm reasonably contributing to REP roles in some cases. It's basically like carrying a giant flag saying you're a noble/badass/guy who was able to steal this from the famous badass owner.

  • 12:10 AM - Morrus quoted knikpiw in post WOIN Trait Tier List
On a side note, your trait can also becomes like a Hook-Quirk as in the Universal Upgrades book. I would recommend looking there for designing a great RP character Universal Upgrades is v1.1. -- most of that content has been subsumed into various v1.2. books and updated.

  • 06:54 AM - M3woods quoted knikpiw in post New to WOIN and I have a couple of questions.
Poison would be a trait added onto an attack, like a bite is Piercing and Poison (which can be done as an upgrade) and the victim is only moved on the status track when hit with a Critical, therefore Vital defence never comes into the equation. Okay, so I an error of the word order sort. I'll correct that: At my table, the poison bite attack targets vital defense, but I consider them as having two different effects. Generally, it takes an attack vs MELEE to hit with the bite attack. If the attack is successful, on the next round, the attack is rolled a second time against VITAL. On a successful hit, the opponent gains a 1st-degree Poisoned Condition (or 2nd degree, if the attack Crits.).

  • 10:37 PM - Brian I quoted knikpiw in post A West Marches NEW game
So is my social PC worthless then? Must I go with with a Spartan warrior with 7 natural Soak at Grade 5 or an android that is a tactician No, I think thereís plenty of NPCs, organizations, etc. Plenty of need for a social based PC.

  • 04:01 PM - Flips quoted knikpiw in post What are you doing / what hooked you about WOIN?
If you attack twice with one weapon in your dominant hand, you get a free attack with the other, e.g. a shield punch or your second pistol. But if you don't have the ambidextrous trait you suffer a -2d6 penalty. If you got an accelerated weapon also, you could attack twice, get another attack for the acceleration and another free attack with the other hand for a total of 4 attacks in one round. Thanks again! I missed these exceptions. In the case where i was looking to apply it, they were trying to use Accelerate (Displace 5, for an extra action) and Speed Flurry (Displace 4, for 2 attacks in one action) to be able to stand still and make 4 attacks a round for 1 minute. Maybe this is allowed, but it seemed awfully powerful for some Grade 6 character.
  • 03:55 PM - Flips quoted knikpiw in post Defense Options
So let's say you use these rules, with the bonus doubling with the use of a shield, does this mean all shields? Or does vary with shield? Good question! I think my original idea was any shield, but it would make more sense to get a bigger bonus for a bigger shield. Maybe add the shield value again (yes I know it is then added 2x, but on the defense, shields are really good!) It might be too much, but that is why I am looking for some feedback. :)

  • 01:49 AM - Morrus quoted knikpiw in post Roll20 for WOIN
The Fantasy Grounds appears to me a more refined and better supported platform, but the Roll20 dodges the 56$ price tag I don't use either - I'm not trying to sell either to you. Just saying what I know in the hopes it's helpful to somebody.
