It's not at all impossible to convert, just don't try to make it an exact fit. Look at the options in DMG to dial the grittiness of the game a little. Practice balancing encounters to your players, 5e does softball things a bit, so dial up the opposition until you get the sweet spot.

When I used Microscope the game was just in one period of history in about the middle, but we all shared and owned the history that had made it, *and* the future that was to come. That's why it's best to to not be too specific.

I want a demon for a big bad boss fight. The PCs will be at full strength. They have magical weapons. They could have allies. The story so far means the demon will be unprepared and not in a lair. But the players are 3 * 3rd level... Warlock, Barbarian and Rogue. Could I risk a Glabrezu? I know I shouldn't, but they look so cool and it is the end of a story arc...

Tolkien believed and stated that stories are there to be adopted, adapted and retold. So, it's cool to say: "This is our Middle Earth, we are starting at X but in this parallel, nothing is predetermined. Oh, and cousin Frodo just got killed by a dark Rider on the Bree Road.." I bet JRR would have *loved* RPGs

IMHO it's the worst. But that's just my view and I have grown to love the whole 5e and 13Age class level games alongside others

Play True20 from Green Ronin. But really you can't fix this in D&D, it's baked in to the system too deep. Play an RPG that doesn't have this inflated escalation: RuneQuest GURPS Fantasy Savage Worlds Genesys Symbaroum Are some that I like. YMMV

Players *hate* the loss of agency this creates. Skip the prologue. Let them backfill what happened in narration. As in 'you could have run, why did you stay and get captured?' 'Who did u save by your actions?'

Playing our fortnightly Symbaroum game on Thursdays, we just finished the first campaign book, according to our GM. Love the setting and the story arcs. Playing D&D 5e weekly on Roll20 in a friend's own setting. Very dark and scary, challenges abound. About 4th level. Running 5e in Northern Faerun with group of newcomers to hobby on alternate Tuesdays. Has evolved into a devils Vs demons...

Surprised people aren't suggesting mixed opposition. Monsters with a high CR tank pinning down paladins and fighters, low CR but nimble skirmishers attacking squishies and monster archers or casters peppering the party with missile and spellfire. Then the monsters tend to be easier to align to the PCs.. just like on the battlefield of the Ancients..

Really interesting chat. When or if this comes up at a table playing 5e that I am reffing we shall decide. Then the sauce for goose as well as gander rule will apply as well. I prefer a readied action to interrupt, but I don't claim it's RAW or better, just generates more narration, and also feels more like skirmish wargaming I am used to (over watch and all that).

Practice balancing encounters to your players, 5e does softball things a bit, so dial up the opposition until you get the sweet spot. Hmmh... I am not sure this is good advice in general. Instead you should look at each encounter and compare how the monster has changed. I converted night below and just used every encounter as is. I made some npcs that tried to be faithful to 2nd edition npcs regarding class and equippment. Here is what Id do now: - ignore the npc levels and class. Instead find matching npcsin the book. They are easier to run and more balanced for a single encounter - at level 1, dont use plate armor on the opposition. Too high AC makes the game stale/swingy. Instead embrace the slightly higher HP as main enemy defense. Same goes for saving throws. - divide every magical item bonus by 2 and round up. - monste...

  • 02:35 PM - DouglasCole quoted 5atbu in post New monsters book for Dungeon Fantasy Roleplaying Game
Bit expensive once shipped to UK. Unless Nordvorn does so well that we crush the $25,000 offset print run goal (and I'm not ruling that out), I expect shipping to not be too bad for my part of the Dungeon Fantasy RPG product support effort. If we slam the stretch goal for an offset print run, it's likely because we are doing so well that I can afford to try and be "clever" with staging. In any case, at the moment it's looking good.

Could I risk a Glabrezu? No way. It will just swat your 3 3rd level PCs aside. Unless there are a huge number of allies, and then is it really the PCs' victory?

You could insert a cleric NPC for the trip. Once Protection from Evil is cast, it goes quickly. Even if the NPC only cast a few spells like ProEvil and cures and not bless which will make things swing a bit as well.

  • 05:29 PM - DMMike quoted 5atbu in post Capture and Player Agency
Players *hate* the loss of agency this creates. This is my experience, unfortunately. It's great that the podcast players were down with getting captured, but Chris, you'd better get an idea of how your players feel about it. Because if you have any My-Character-Is-A-Demigod players, they will probably cause problems if they're forced into a capture. So my question is this: Would you want to role-play the prologue or just start at the actual beginning of the adventure? If I made it clear that we are role playing the prologue and that this isnt the actual start of the adventure and that the final outcome of being captured is a fixed and unchangeable event, is there still value for the player in this? I feel like some players would like to decide how they failed/got captured or may want the chance to do other things. Or should I just start them in jail and narrate how they ended up there? I'd want to role-play it as long as there would be something to gain from it. Like - allow t...

Oh my, you just didn't get it.. did you? Mostly. But I tend to analyze books/movies etc. as I read/watch them. That's just how my mind works. So it was the first thing that I thought of. The fact that she never even tried did annoy me a bit, but it was a great movie all the same.

Oh IMHO never say that about a magical elf game! I've always felt magical dwarf games tend to be more real. We're not playing "Mother-May-I" at our table. If that's the style of play at your table and everyone is on board and having fun with it, carry on. If you but only knew what hassles that phrase caused in another running thread. :p
