Drake rescues his supplies from the man. On second search, he finds four flasks of oil. The others he can only guess were used to fuel the burning sconces on the walls here. Pelegon still can not find any alcohol. As you get acquainted (or not), you hear a cheer rise up from the camp above. When you exit the pit, you find the rescuers have returned and they have a second cart. Villagers are...

Drake You leave the tent and are directed to the pit. As you descend the ramp underground you are passed by four villagers carrying a slightly decomposed corpse with sword wounds on a makeshift gurney. You recognize the corpse as Mara, a townswoman who ran a cheese shop. As you descend further into the pit you torchlight ahead. There are several more townsfolk tending to two other similar...

Meanwhile, back at the camp... "Hey, look, someone's tied up," a woman's voice says. "What? Who?" says a man. "Scaly skin, think he's one of them?" says another man. "No, that's that dancer fellow," says another woman, apparently getting a better look. "He was in town a few days back. I thought he'd moved on." "Cut him loose," says a man. You are third level. You've had money. So you can have a few alchemy items that you built, that's not an issue. The real issue is you were captured and separated from your items. After you are untied, you will find your lute but your alchemical supplies and the prebuilt items you had before you were captured are suspiciously not with your other equipment, found in the tent you were tied up in....

tglassy, once you do the following, you can post Drake to the rogue's gallery. Include "Race: Human" near Class for easier reference. (I forget sometimes....) Put the actual ability and skill bonuses in place. Indicate that Athletics has expertise in the skill section too. Under Class Features, you should indicate the color/metal of your heritage.

He was captured while visiting a friend in three nights before the festival." to the end of that. And we have a background that fits the story so far as well. I'm not against it but I do find the Artificer a bit too Jack of all Trades. The third level expertise bonus means an artificer can pick locks as well as a rogue. The can cure and fireball. They get two attacks per round at 5th level like fighting classes do. The alchemist subclass is poor, I think. And there should have been more than 2 subclasses. The text says artificers start with 2...

Dwarves are kinda rare by themselves. It might be hard to justify such underground races living in a small farming village among humans. But you can try. :)

I don't know that we're too far apart. I'm fine with multiclassing to get a mechanical benefit because it fits your vision of the character. It's the difference between playing a holy knight of the god of magic that you realize as a paladin/sorcerer vs. playing a grim vengance-knight where you take levels of sorcerer just to fuel your Divine Smite slots and for the CON save. I'm also big on...

For me, multiclassing is a great tool for building a concept that falls between some classes. I've seen multiclassing to two and even three done quite well. On the other hand, I've seen multiclassing being used to cherry pick advantages from various classes - those can fall flat with even just 2 if you're doing it for mechanics instead of for a concept. "My paladin is going to take a level...

Perhaps drawn cards do not immediately reappear. Perhaps they do in 10 years. So there's a reason to lock decks up - keep them for use at a later point, especially as you start to know what cards are in the deck. This avoids the repetition, gives a reason for guarding them but not carrying them with you, can fuel plot hooks liek a temple of a god of luck being known to have a particularly...

I read it and came to 100% the opposite conclusion than you. This is a subclass that will support how I want to play it. Want to be DEX based, it can do that, use my limited slots on arcane weapon, and be a crossbow-wielding hunk. But Arcane Weapon takes concentration, which locks you out of a bunch of options. Want to be INT based, it can do that. Don't need slots, cast scaling,...

If you're against a single opponent, without reach, and you need to move - then it's decent. Though it's not "free", it costs one of your bardic inspiration dice. Often Defensive Flourish can grant you a good enough AC against multiple attacks that mathematically it's superior (as in it saves more damage over it's length statistically) than avoiding a single attack of opportunity that may or...

Yes, and so what? Nova-ing isn't inherently bad. As a matter of fact, it's a feature of daily resource usage vs. a more spread at-will (or somewhat spread short rest). So it looks like it is something intentional from them designers. Let's not move the goalpost. The question is about replacing removed mechanical ways to help avoid 15 minute adventuring days.

Maybe swap out Destroy Undead (not particularly thunder/lightning) and grant a lightning/thunder spell known...

We playtested it as a few different level points. We found that it strongly encouraged casting higher level spells - basically novaing all the time. better action economy, kill foes quicker, etc. But because of that casters ran out quickly and advocated for 15 minute adventuring days. If there was some adventure reason they couldn't take a long rest then instead ended up using mostly cantrips...

It's not that big a deal. Or just say it doesn't change your initiative count. After you take your delayed action, you still act on your normal count. Make delaying eat your reaction for 5e balance.

If you want games that play live, go on Discord. You can chat any time you want during the week and you can have a set weekly live time with voice chat. I'm joining a game like this now. The game will be live in the chat with a weekly live night. I was in like 10 games when EB was here. Miss them.

No extra rolling, but loads more fiddliness and math. In the two games I'm in there are at least one person per game that needs to be coached through the math for every roll, even when it's written on their character sheet. This spell now gives three different cases that are not obvious to that type of player: I don't have a proficiency, so I need to add +3. I have proficiency, but it's...

So in addition to the wrist-breaking six-volumes-in-one, I also have a ebook I'm reading. The Wendy by Erin Michelle Sky is a retelling, or rather a re-imagining, of Peter Pan. I'm not far into it, but so far I am very much enjoying the narration style, one that almost chats with the reader. I have never read the original Peter Pan, but I can easily believe it was (or should have been) written...

Great googly moogly. Really nice rolls so you can ignose ASIs for feats, plus one of the balance points of multiclassing removed. That can be a killer "warrior". I'd be really tempted to go for pact of the blade as well because you can use CHR with your pact weapon regardless of category (it's split onto the next page in XGtE) and eventually taking GWM - big weapons do more on crits even...

Even if you were the mayor's kid and a shoe in to be mayor yourself one day, maybe you aren't happy with just that small town any more. Even if it's a pretty spectacular small town.

"Worst" case of not knowing the rules in terms of impacting play speed was trying to have one player run another player's paragon 4e character when they were out. The misunderstandings, retcons because "oh, that's how it works", and time spent were ridiculous. This happened on a regular basis in one game, where the character was still there (and needed) regardless if the player could make it. ...

Here's how it looks like it differs from base 5e. 1. Bounded accuracy takes a big hit at higher levels. This is the to hit/DC portion of this. This will make foes very easy to hit / affect because AC and non-proficient saves don't get proficiency. At my table I'd want to balance that out ... but probably by not doing it instead of introducing an offsetting mechanic. 2. Expertise is a...

...g up much greater than inflation? I remember getting into the Star Wars WEG RPG in the mid 90's, and most books cost about $20. When 3e came out an I got serious about D&D, I think the core books were still $20 each. I recently bought the 5e books and paid about $35 for them. Going by a quick online inflation calculator, that seems pretty on par with inflation. And the new RPG books I'm buying are much higher quality (color, glossy, more pages) than the books I was buying in the 90s. I don't. The data I saw was the price of novel paperbacks going up massively. Publishers said at the time print cost had increased and print cost were the bulk fo the costs. Then when they started putting out electronic copies of those same novesl at the same (or similar) price just a few years later, they said it was because the costs were nearly identical. Which was absurd given what they had said earlier about a sizable portion being in the print cost. The real reason appears to have been, as jmucchiello mentioned, not annoying the distributors of print books, and because they could.

If this is a problem let em know and I'll change it back.

I assume this, sans an epilogue, is the end of the party#1 playtest? I will probably bow out of PbP now, I have a lot on my plate currently. This being the last I was involved in. The others were all run by @EarlyBird, I hope nothing serious became of him, I was really looking forward to the 'living' campaign of Keep on the Borderland...it was a great idea ( 1E feel with 5E rules) But I digress, Thank you for the opportunity to playtest this, you did a great job GMing it for us! jmucchiello I doubt I will play PF2 over D&D(5E), it just didn't grab my attention my critique of PF2: ~The guide is all over the place, and needs to be better laid out ( dont tell me to 'see pg etc etc' and then tell me to ' refer to page etc etc') ~To many variables involved in the actions ( crit fail/crit success normal fail/normal success), it's cumbersome,(reminds me of THAC0 and having to look up the chart every time and check my weapon type versus the Armor type and then the modifier...) ~Action Economy for melee versus arcana caster feels weighted, a melee class making 3 attacks to an arcane casters 1(ish) spell, coupled with the melee's (I'm looking at you rogue/ranger) additional feats and tricks, puts the spellcaster back in the squishy back of the party role of 1E days. ~stabilizing/healing...Gritty realism mode? that's all I can think of from this short test. but its possible some of the above has been adressed already ( I have not read any of the updates since the playtest bundl...

Oh you beautiful wonderful bas…. Person OP. “Appropriate Thematics” is a beautiful word. It is a better than “It is the DM’s world. You don’t have to play in it”. If I would homebrew a campaign (I do Adventure League), for Appropriate Thematics I would ban: Feats, just because I want to see how the game would run without them. No Underdark races as PCs. I would like to keep the Underdark as evil place to visit; not one you go home to for your family reunion. Partial ban on Volo’s Monster. You come up with a great backstory. But you will be occasionally at disadvantage on something. Why because Grandma just got ran over by goblin in a goat cart. So I a coward Panda-s1. No I would start right out banning stuff because as jmucchiello said, I been burned by OFFICIAL MATERIAL before. Had Bob loan be the “Complete Copy of Paladins” for a week. I missed the big thing. I asked Bob, “Anything crazy or over powered in this paladin? “ And Bob replied, “No” First COMBAT ON THE FIRST LEVEL WITH HIS LEVEL ONE PALADIN OUT COMES a HOLEY AVENGER. Then Bob whined and half the table whined when I banned it. Sorry CapnZapp for decades in various games I been meeting players who say it is Official you must allow it. I have not discovered where this line of thought comes from.

Behind them, the Drow run from the alesian forces, ignoring the recent arrivals. Heroes and knights are alone in the fields, each group facing the other. Fiery weapons are brandished by the attackers. At the far left and far right of their lines, a horn is blown and a banner flies proudly. Jousting lances risen, they're soon to be brought down against the heroes, should they allow. The nightmares barely touch the floor, making the charge eerily silent. They could leap upwards in flight at any moment! "YOU! YOU ARE THE ONES WE HOPED FOR! YOU ARE WORTHY OF OUR PROWESS! FACE US, SO VICTORY IN HONORED COMBAT GRANTS GLORY TO THE VICTOR!" - cries the knight in the center. • 09:18 AM - pemerton mentioned jmucchiello in post Do you enjoy playing roleplaying games in which you have no clue about the rules?
...he players at the table. That's their sole and crucial function. Mechanics can take multiple forms (I think this point goes back to Jonathan Tweet in Everway): Drama resolution relies on asserted statements without reference to listed attributes or quantitative elements. Karma resolution relies on referring to listed attributes or quantitative elements without a random element. Fortune resolution relies on utilizing a random device of some kind, usually delimited by quantitative scores of some kind. If playing without knowledge of the mechanics means lots of "drama" resolution - ie when I say what my PC does, then most of the time that just happens in the fiction - then it's fine although potentially a bit unexciting (the situations have to be pretty evocatively set out by the GM so that it's fun to engage with them knowing how that engaging is all I need to do to have things happen). If I'm meant to be learning the fiction, like the magic system described by Blue and jmucchiello, the GM had better provide me with the chance to learn! If playing without knowledge of the mechanics means lots of "fortune" resolution but only the GM knows what is going on - only the GM can call for a check, interpret a check, etc - then it's really a form of GM fiat resolution - the mechanics are imposing pretty minimal constraint under these circumstances - with the players along for the ride. The GM better be a good storyteller! Playing with heavily GM-mediated "karma" resolution makes me think of Amber diceless - I've never played it myself but that is how it looked when I saw others playing it.

  • 04:28 PM - Blue mentioned jmucchiello in post Do you enjoy playing roleplaying games in which you have no clue about the rules?
I can enjoy playing without knowing the rules, but that's not my default. Way back when I had a great experience with this, run by jmucchiello. We knew nothing about anything, and all played young people from a backwater village, just coming of age and needing to go into the wider world. He ran a homebrew system, though part way through he (after talking to us) revamped the freeform magic system because we were getting the hang of it way too fast. I remember being thrilled at being able to make a rope harness and levitate it (since we knew the magic words for, I think rope and telekinesis plus some power booster words), but nothing that would allow us to fly ourselves. I'd have a couple of caveats to playing not knowing the rules, on top of the foundation of trust in your DM to be both fair and consistent. First, it must be that none of the players know the rules and we're all learning them just from interaction with the world. Some people knowing the rules and me not just makes me feel stupid. Second, we know the genre (at least to a degree). For example, assuming everything is gritty and death is cheap when the DM i...

Hegreet Kordo Vos, they appeared to be old friends. "Lindrel?" Kordo calls out. "You are just in time." Rorik watched the two greet like old friends. Lindrel? Still didn't ring any bells. Well they would have time later to discuss their respective histories.... was meant as an opening to have our characters know each other - but its come across as rather sexist. I didn't really want it to, but oh well. I wasn't sure how tied you were to the idea of being somewhere no one knew you, so I left it as vague as possible.

... "I'd say it's not the case... Surely those affected might be the ones closely related to that dreadful castle" - a second one speaks her mind. "I heard that all the afflicted were, at one point or another, in the presence of the priestess" - her glance is filled with despise, and targets Aranel first. "Oh, please..." - a third one begins. "You only say that out of hate for the priestess... Solely because..." - a cursing look from the second one and the third one swallowed her words. "Well, who's to know what caused this... I heard the human lords cursed the castle... The bowels of that monstrosity are now festering with disease and decay... All because of their demise when we entered this place" "Who's to know anything..." - the first one starts over. "If there's a curse, it affects those too lazy or too lenient to compromise. It might be a curse, but spoken by the mouth of our dead youth, the elfic beauty sacrificed in the stone..." MetaVoid Neurotic Shayuri KahlessNestor jmucchiello

I just noticed Drake's flaw. You will be traveling with a noble. Everett is like 5th in line for the Tommelsin (I never remember how to spell it) family chair. (And you should have include the background info in the RG thread. We'll never find it again if it is left in the OOC.) Gotcha, I’ll grab that. And yes. I look forward to making fun...I mean, verbally sparring with the elf. As for who the Noble is that “wants his head”, we can work that out. Drake is not the most reverent of characters towards those he believes look down on him.

Wouldn't it be simpler to not change Ready and add the 3.5 Delay to your game? Not really, because Delay changes your initiative count, which is a bunch of wackiness that I don't want to deal with.

  • 07:58 PM - MacConnell quoted jmucchiello in post How to better PBP - a controversial suggestion (all systems)
...A piece of common wisdom I see here is to recruit large groups... I have found that the same few people seem to respond to all requests despite the number of available members on this site. I have also observed that unless the offer is from 5e or PF it will get no traffic. ...And in PBP, almost every day is a "session" - it's a game you devote a few minutes every day instead of a big session every week or 2... The application of play has to be adjusted to the PbP setting. This is the burden of the GM / DM. In video game versions like Neverwinter Nights, bingers can elevate characters 10 levels or more in a single sitting, even with the mechanics changed to award about 1% of the usual XP of a table-top session. In a PbP, I have found that the offer needs to be increased. I tend to offer XP once a week or once every ten posts, depending on the participation of players. This seems to fix the sigma that characters are never going to advance since a single combat can take more than a week to com...

I participated in the open game development of the system. It did not turn out to be the old school heartbreaker I was looking for. :) I found that playing was kind of like my first few games - possibly because it's hard to feel like you are making poor choices when so much is randomised. But I have to agree, they have put a LOT of complexity behind the screen that doesn't feel anything like old school.

Most annoying is having what I think is clever mechanic but that mathematically has some issues. Getting it to work is tilting at windmills. At least you are wise enough to realize that. I feel the same way every time I try to get a FUDGE based system to work for me.

Azurewraith I guess you never saw this. If I'd known the last section of the adventure would take so long, I'd have made a new character.Sorry I didn't see this no, yes feel free to take over I never realised things would take this long either.

No, it doesn't say you can't put it in the bank. If it did, no one would use KS. You are allowed to make a profit. Profits go in the bank. It literally says that all funds need to go fully into producing the project in question: sure, that can include a salary for your own time, which is why people need to convince pledgers they are going to use the resources wisely, rather than pocket the money and run. Nothing in the Kickstarter pledge is "profit," it is all contractually obligated to be used in producing something. Profit comes later.

I didn't say they were going to pocket anything. They constantly say every dollar goes to the animation budget. I was just refuting the idea that money raised using KS cannot go into the bank. According to Kickstarter, it can't. Realistically, sure, people can do all sorts of scummy things.

There is nothing in there that says excess funds must be frivolously applied to the creation of the project beyond the price of the project's creation. Ongoing concerns of the company behind the project is a perfectly normal place for excess funds to end up. Keeping the lights on and the employees paid is part of fulfilling the project goals. Well, as of this morning, the estimated per minute budget for animation according to their business plan is less than $35k. $30-50k per minute is industry standard for budget, according to their own video. They are millions away from even hitting the high end of their goal for the season as it stands.

What skills were you planning to give the companion? He comes with stealth and perception. I was thinking of adding athletics or acrobatics (athletics makes more sense to me but likely to see less use due to the trip attack) and intimidation.

See IC post. I forget, did you have a wolf with you the whole time or are you taming one of the wolves that are already here? Hmmm... I should have read my own backstory. Perin had the wolf with him - or at least available - since he escaped. I think I got caught up in the idea of taming one of the camp wolves. But I actually wanted to ask about a saddle more than armour. I guess that would be the same? Barding is feasible for a wolf, though the beast might not like it. I would call that an Animal Handling extended task to get the wolf to accept the barding. Obviously there's nothing available here for barding. You will have to have it made when you get back to town. There will be downtime after the next "chapter" and you will need downtime to get armor made and the wolf use to wearing it.That all makes sense, I just wanted to see if I needed to use one of the skills the pet gains for armour training (something I have seen on some forums). That is up to you. Obviously Perin is hoping for s...

I want to see the traditional samurai armor on a centaur. :) While I imagine Swithun looking more Native American than Japanese, I have to agree that a full-on Samurai Centaur would be terrifying (and awesome) to behold.

Despite Saarthax' best effort to bring about a peaceful end to the fight the orc refuses to surrender. Under the determined onslaught of the group the raging juggernaut is brought down. The noise of battle is replaced by the more distant noise of the fire in the village. A mob of 12 villagers, armed with pitchforks and crossbows rushes noisily towards you, intent on helping. The relief of many of their faces is obvious when they see the fight is over. Back in the town, Pinns's cottage is burning low as a group of villagers, armed with buckets, keeps the fire from spreading. "Something in there don't like water." Someone says. "Nearly went up again when Harry threw a bucket on it, so we left it and just made sure the fire di'nt spread." I thought Orc 1 was killed by Saarthax. Assuming that's true... He did, I just forgot to update the HPs Juggernaught save: 1d20+3 21
