"First of all, Guomindong, your posts are trending more and more toward the jerkish and you need to cut that out. I GET that you think that craft and profession skills are not something needed in this (or any) RPG. Since a great many RPG's see fit to include them then I would say that there is room for disagreement on the subject. You stating categorically that this is essentially badwrongfun is not conducive to further conversation. So knock it off. You're plenty smart enough to have a reasonable discussion on the matter."
There is no "room for disagreement" on the subject when it comes to DnD. The "badwrongfun" issue was addressed already and ignored. There is "badwrongfun" in dnd and its pretty objective what it is. You see, DnD emulates a specific type of trope/ideal. It does not do things outside of that trope/ideal, which is heroic fantasy.
In order to achieve that idea, it does not need the skills of craft, profession, and perform. And i mean that objectively. It objectively does not need them. They are, objectively, bad for the game.
Why are they bad for the game? Because, as already described and ignored[rather than addressed], they provide a mechanical deficiency between two players when none needs to exist. Why does none need to exist? Because the skills, in order to be made use of, need to have a DM specifically design and allow the actions that would otherwise be reasonably covered by other skills which exist specifically in their pursuit of achieving the main objective that the game moves towards.
That is, the difference between a player with "perform" in their background and one with "perform" in their skill list is that the one with perform in their background rolls endurance, or charisma, or insight, or arcana, or religion, or whatever applicable skill makes their performance better when adjudicating the special action that the DM designed for him[or allowed him to do] and the one with perform in their skill list rolls perform.
But in the primary game, this situation will never need to come up, so the character with perform on their skill list is being penalized for having a background.
Its not a question of opinion, since the only time where these instances can come up in the normal game is if the game was centered around crafting, performing, or rolling a random profession check. But we know the game is not centered around that, its about trying to solve some problem in a heroic fantasy setting. If you want to play a game centered around crafting, performing, or some profession, feel free to have a bunch of skills for very specific aspects of those performances, crafts, and professions. But it won't be DnD. Just as it won't be DnD if i am playing a game about space cats fighting with humans in spaceships across a distant galaxy.
If anyone's being a jerk, its the guy who won't answer simple logic and will instead lie about what was said.
