Question about "Reporting a post"

What exactly happens when one does that?

I was in a situation recently in which I -thought- about it. But then I realized that..

1-The person who had made the posts in question was a moderator
2-I didn't really care -that- much, and therefore chose to apologize profusely (while, in my opinion, having been in the right) instead of pursuing the issue.

But, to be honest, the whole issue left me with the indelibile feeling that EnWorld has a definite "caste" system, in which some posters are allowed a @#$$load more leeway than "occasional" posters such as myself are, much in the Animal Farm way. And, had I known exactlly what it meant to "report a post" (or thread, in this example) meant, I would have done so.

The post appears in the moderator's forum, along with your comments on why you reported it. A moderator then looks at it and deals with it. How it's dealt with varies widely on the nature of the situation - but usually, problem people are contacted privately by email rather than publicly on the boards.

Since I have no idea what situation you're referring to (and this is the second thread I've seen that you've chosen to hint at it vaguely without actually telling anyone what you're talking about), I can't possibly comment on your particular circumstance.

If you think the post needs reporting, do so. If you don't, don't. But nothing can be done until someone has a clue what you're talking about - and implying that that lack of action is due to any type of bias, preferential treatment or "caste system" is just silly.

You know.. I do want to apologize. While I was soured by my experience regarding this issue, I must admit that I didn't really -do- anything but "hint" at it, as you said, and I do understand how this make the whole thing look. All of my comments are/were based on my own, admittedly "colored" views regarding the issue, and as such, have little value.

On the other hand, I -was- reminded of my days in the military, in which if you were going to report one of your "superiors" for something, depending on who you ended up with, regardless of the fact that you immediate superior was the one you were reporting, you'd get your #%$%^ chewed for ignoring the chain of command..

Edit: Bah. I reread (once more) the thread I was refering too. And while I -still- believe it was sort of an overreaction on the part of the moderator I was talking about, it was in no mean as egregious as I recalled it. Strike that one to me overreacting, probably just as much (if not more) as the moderator I was "accusing". And while that do not really change the opinio I stated in that other thread you refer to, it does reduce my whining about this particular issue to, well, whining. I was, however, genuineley interested as to how "report this post" thingies were handled.

Feel free to delete/lock/whatever this thread as you see fit, as I, for one, consider this issue closed and irrelevant, and will not comment on it here or elsewhere from now on. And I'd like to thank you for addressing the issue so quickly, and with non-drastic measures.

No problem. To be clear, there's absolutely nothing wrong with reporting a situation where you feel that a moderator or administrator has not handled a situation perfectly. Lord knows I've made mistakes! When we get a reported post, we discuss it as a team and contact folks off-line (usually) if a situation needs addressing; there will never be any sort of retribution for reporting a mod's or admin's post, and as Morrus said we can't help solve a situation unless we know about it.

Closed, per Barak's request.
