Avatar question

I've been trying to add a new avatar, but I keep running headlong into the size limitation on images of under the 4.9k or 64x64 pixels. However I notice that tons of the pre-defined avatars are both larger than the dimension limit and the file size limit. Does the limit only apply to ones we want to add on our own?

And does getting a community supporter account add any potential size increase to avatars? Mostly I'm just asking because I got new art and I want to use it for an avatar pic, but even just going for a face I get crappy detail to the point that its too tiny to see if I downsize it to 64x64 or smaller.

Have you tried lowering the color depth to something like 8 bit? That can really knock down the file size, without hurting the image if you optimize it in the right program.

Another question - what about if we're just linking to a avatar using that option, instead of trying to add it?

I tried adding a new one, and got the expected "too big" message. I tried linking to the avatar from my website, and got this message:

Quote:
Error - cannot find an image at the specified URL. Please make sure that you have entered a valid URL.
It's not my web storage space hanging up, as I use the avatar on another forum by linking to it. Is it the bigger than 64 x 64 size?
