I'd say everything you mentioned, with exception to fired employees. I've never been fired from a job, but I know I'd hate it if it got trotted out on the internet. If it did get announced, I'd hope the fire-ee got to tell his side.
Really, anything that applies to d20 is valid.

I'm trying to get a feel for what others consider to be "news."
Is a new product release news?
Announcement of a new game line or edition?
Hiring/firing of employees?
What do you think is news?
Yes, yes, depends. Certainly the first two, the hiring/firing on a case-by-case basis. It would really depend on the posiition. Senior-level stuff, yeah - if the product manager for a major line quits, or something like that. Run of the mill stuff, no.
Also, acquisiitions of licensed properties would be news, tie-ins with other products (eg, RPG tie-ins with a fantasy movie), convention presence. Whether or not any item is considered sufficiently newsworthy to rate front-page isn't my call, but any of the above wouldn't be out of line to submit, I woudlnt' think.
I'd say the first two, definitely, the last one depends vastly on the specifics--I'll make up some imaginary cases:
Ronin Arts has announced today that they have fired John Smith, their former layout artist. "We just don't think Smith's work was up to snuff. As one of the frontrunners in the PDF industry, we live and die by our layout," higher-ups at Ronin Arts commented. Not News
In a scandal involving what one commenter called "101 White Collar Crimes", Ronin Arts has fired Phil Reed. "What's next for Ronin Arts?" fans ask. News
Ronin Arts has hired layout artist Smith Johnson to do the layout for the next PDF "We're really excited by Smith's work--we think it will increase the aesthetic appeal of the layout by at least 4%," Ronin Arts commented. Not News
In a surprise move, Ronin Arts has acquired the talents of Monte Cook, Mike Mearls, Erik Mona, and several other top names in the industry to work on a new secret project. Though no details have yet been released, Phil Reed promises that the end result will cause Ronin Arts to revolutionise the PDF RPG industry. Fans speculate wildly, including wild rumours of a neo-Planescape revival. News
I wouldn't even guarantee the newsworthiness of a product release. For instance, the release of the 188th item in a product line might not be newsworthy if they've been released at a steady pace of one per week or something similar. Depends on the product I guess.
