What are Referrals?

I clicked on my own name to find out how many posts per day I have, and I noticed I have 1 referral? Is this someone clicking on the "inform a moderator" button?

Is it a black mark of some kind? I mean it's just one, can't it go away after a few days? I don't know what I was "referred" for, but I know it had to be minor (like posting to the wrong forum).

Okay - i found the answer. See above link

Basically, someone signed up as a new member following a link to the site from you (i.e. some how someone new joined and you were listed as the source/reference for that user via use of url links or something)

Interesting. I too have one referral, I have a good idea who it is irl, but I haven't a clue who they're registered as and I don't believe they've posted on any of the threads I've started, at least as far as I know...

Yeah, the software is somehow able to record who referred the board to someone else.

I belive some boards use the system in a "recruitment drive" kind of way - people who get a certain number of referrals win something. I've never really looked into it, though.
